What Redditors are Saying

Best Horror Stories to Read Online

Subreddits for Horror Stories

Reddit is a popular platform for horror enthusiasts, offering various subreddits dedicated to chilling tales. Some recommended subreddits include r/nosleep, r/shortscarystories, and r/ruleshorror [1:1]. These communities feature user-generated content ranging from short stories to series, often with unique twists and engaging narratives.

Notable Online Horror Stories

Several specific horror stories have gained popularity online. Stephen King's "1408" is available to read for free and is highly praised [2]. Other notable mentions include "Ted the Caver," a classic pillar of online horror [2:2], and "The Enigma of Amigara Fault," a well-regarded indie manga [2:5]. Additionally, "My Dead Girlfriend Keeps Messaging Me on Facebook" is a high-rated story on r/NoSleep [4:3].

Recommended Series and Authors

For those interested in series, several authors and stories stand out. u/iia's "Teeny Tiny" and u/EZmisery's "The 1%" are noted for their body horror elements [4:2]. The "Borrasca" and "Tommy Taffy" series are also recommended for their gripping narratives [4:2][4:11]. The "Left/Right Game" on nosleep is another fantastic series that has captivated readers [4:5].

Unique Story Formats

Beyond traditional storytelling, horror stories can be found in unique formats such as ARGs (Alternate Reality Games) and text message-based narratives. One example involves a story told entirely through text messages from a deceased girlfriend [4:1]. Such innovative storytelling methods add layers of realism and immersion to the horror experience.

Exploring Lesser-Known Stories

For those seeking fresh and lesser-known horror stories, exploring platforms like YouTube can be rewarding. Channels like TorStorys focus on eerie disappearances and strange creature sightings, steering clear of overdone Reddit narrations [5]. This approach offers new perspectives and untapped horror topics for enthusiasts to explore.

Best short horror stories you can read online?

Posted by Smitteys867 · in r/TwoBestFriendsPlay · 9 days ago

Inspired by that post about scary stories people have heard/told, I wanted to share this Stephen King short 1408 cuz it's available to read for free, and it's great! Does anyone know of some other good spooky short stories or series you can read entirely online?

There’s a sequel to The Thing called Things that’s pretty good, though people are split on the premise and idea of the Thing in it

Las mejores historias de terror

Posted by KarinaBanales · in r/libros · 2 months ago

Whats your favorite horror story that you've found on the internet?

Posted by manletmonday · in r/horror · 6 years ago

I usually like internet based horror more than TV shows or movies. What's your favorite video, ARG, nosleep, urban legend etc? "Have You Seen This Man" haunted me for years.

nosleep junkie of like 6 years here! hands down my favorite stories are by u/iia and u/EZmisery. i give those two a lot of credit for my body horror obsession. iia’s Teeny Tiny and EZ’s The 1% series stuck with me particularly hard. Other than them, I also love Borrasca and the Tommy Taffy series. And the gothic romance lover in me has to plug The Artist, as it is responsible for the Klimt canvas I’ve had on my wall for the past three years.

Ive always been really into nosleep too haha, I recognize these authors, but I dont think ive actually read these stories. Ill definitely have to now. I always give credit to u/1000Vultures for sparking my passion for horror stories with their Penpal series.

The Tommy Taffy series had me bothered for a long time after reading it. The end didn't quite live up to the rest of the series, but it was a fun read either way.

There was one done completely with text messages. The idea was that this guy's girlfriend died in her car with her phone when she drove off a bridge into a river. They never recovered the phone. Eventually the boyfriend starts getting text messages from her. It starts out as something simple like "I'm Cold" or "It's Dark" and then work their way up to videos of him (supposedly without his knowledge) from inside his house.

I think it was a creepypasta. It was very well done.

Either the one about the Kansas(i think) town that mysteriously disappeared in the 50s/60s or the one about the televangelist show with the rotting head "fight-clubbed" into the program every week.

Now that i think about it, the one about the experiment where some guy with something terminal agrees to have most sensory nerves to his brain severed is pretty awesome too.

Scary Horror Stories

I’ve recently started making videos about horror stories everything from eerie disappearances to strange creature sightings.

I’d love to hear your thoughts what kind of horror topics would you like to see covered? I’m steering clear of Reddit story narrations since they’ve been done to death and prefer exploring fresh, lesser-known cases.

If you’re curious, you can check it out on YouTube my channel’s called TorStorys

  • Many (but not all) of the text pastas also have video narrations on YouTube that you can listen to if you want, and most of the narrations have text versions of you prefer reading. However, there are several that don’t have narrations and must be read.
  • Vilification has a narration but it’s terrible. Don’t listen to it. Just read it instead.
  • The Body Farm ends right at 1:22:28. Don’t even bother listening to the second half because it’s basically a crappy sequel that ruins the whole story, but the first half is easily one of the best (and scariest) creepypastas that I have ever heard. The story concludes in the first half. DO NOT listen to the second half unless you want a really really good story totally ruined for you. The first half is seriously one of the best stories on this list, though.
  • The stories aren’t really listed in any particular order and you can read them in any order that you want. They’re all worth your time.
  • Shadows of Shallowbrooke - The Singing Of Crows comes before Shadows of Shallowbrooke - Renewal of the Circle and must be read first.
  • On Creepypasta.com, there is a link that you can click called “top rated pastas.” There you can find lots and lots of good creepypastas.
  • Also, there are lots and lots of good new creepypastas published on Creepypasta.com constantly. You can find lots of great stories on your own by browsing the site. That’s how I found most of the text pastas on here and there are also numerous great ones that I’ve read that aren’t listed because I forgot their names or they slipped my mind.
  • Angels Aren’t Beautiful and What Happens When the Stars go Out are actually feelspastas (emotional/sad/beautiful stories, not scary or creepy.)

Yep. AI hasn’t taken over… yet lol. The images are AI, though. I also use audio software to clean up breaths and sibilance a bit. Thanks for checking it out—hope you liked it! 🙂

Simply the best horror you’ve ever read

I don’t know if there’s a definitive post of people’s “favourites” already in this group but I’m compiling a list and this would be a great source. Limit yourself to ONE title if you can: what is, in your opinion, the best horror book of all time (can include short stories).

The Yellow Wallpaper

Short, no filler, absolutely horrifying. Nothing gory, no jump scares, but my goodness it hit me HARD. Think...the Bell Jar meets House of Leaves in short story form.

Apparently it's also a feminist work!

But y'all should read it if you have any interest in psychological horror at its finest.

The Willows by Algernon Blackwood.

I only read it because of how much I enjoyed T Kingfisher’s loose sequel The Hollow Places but wow, Blackwood did so much with so little in comparison.

I just read it off of this recommendation and it was fantastic, so thank you for the rec. Im looking online and i don’t see anything, but i have to ask, do any of y’all know if this is based at all around any personal experience from Blackwood? Because it is frighteningly similar to an experience my best friend and i had trying to camp in Yosemite a few years ago, to the point where i sent it to her and we are both now scared again lmao. The indescribable “primal” or “ancestral” terror he describes is the only thing that has ever come in the ballpark of describing what we felt, and we still don’t know why exactly we were so scared. It was halfway through our roadtrip, we were completely fine until then for weeks, and when trying to describe it to family/friends multiple times now, the best we have had to offer is “the land itself did not want us there. Something was out there that we couldn’t see, but it saw us.”

There are also a few other parallels freaking me out lmao, like spoilers* for example, their canoe having the gash in the bottom, trapping them for another night, the same way the tire on our minivan literally exploded (you could fit your forearm through the gash in side of it, it was completely shot and we had to get a replacement since we couldn’t take the spare through the mountains, and it took six hours once we finally found a place open on a Sunday) and so we got stuck for another night, when we had been trying to high-tail it out. The rest of that particular night was “uneventfully” horrific (the insane fear, and odd happenings that just kept stacking on-top of each-other, its a long story) but we had to leave the park in the dead of night and try to find another place to sleep (an awful decision that ended quite poorly) We still cant really talk about the whole experience to this day, partially because it still bothers us, and partially because we don’t really have the words for it. When the roadtrip comes up in any conversation, Yosemite is completely left-out.

Damn-good author I suppose, if he never felt that type of terror before. Because he did an amazing job at putting those feelings onto paper.

I adore this short. It's genuinely terrifying. I wish someone would write something contemporary like this. I did enjoy The Hollow Places, but at the same time it feels so childish compared to The Willows.

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. A classic for a reason. It's my favorite book of all time.

I could give other more cutting edge or obscure answers, but nothing’s been better than Hill House.

Blood Child by Octavia Butler. I’ve thought of at least one of the stories almost daily for 15+ years.

Hands down my favorite of all time is Rebecca by Daphne Du Marier. I know it would be considered tame by most, maybe not even “horror”- although I consider it gothic horror. everything about it unsettled me- down to the fact that every character was despicable, unhinged in their own way, and petty- yet I couldn’t get enough of them. I thought the book and the story were so clever and fun, and the writing was so atmospheric, that I could imagine every scene.

What is the scariest story you've ever read

this is for legit horror as in Stephen king or Poe. Twilight, tween novels and other types of literature that tease horror are not allowed.

Must be a legitimate horror novel, Novella, audiobook or visual novel

The Stand. And I’m not just saying that cause of covid since it’s been years since I read it.

Specifically while the virus is spreading and society is falling apart freaked me out. It’s one of Kings less horror type books, but as retired Military Police the more realistic premise of a deadly virus and the response of the government to cover it up really got to me. I kept putting myself and the friends I served with into the place of the soldiers in this book and it sickened me to my core. Several chapters required me to put down the book and just process.

For weeks I couldn’t sleep without dreaming of reporters being summarily executed by the military on live TV. Shipping containers full of corpses being dumped into the ocean. Students gunned down by troops and shit and while they say everything is perfect.

God honestly whole chapters of that book got under my skin (I haven't finished it yet but I'm sure many more will in time) like when >!the radio host is executed and then the soldiers turn on the sergeant who shot the host because he was a dick and they know there won't be consequences!<

When the >!deaf mute!< kid Nick is watching the TV and its >!the soldiers being executed one by one!< and it cuts to a kids viewpoint of it, them not understanding its real...Christ King can write. (I may be wrong, It may have been Nick not understanding its real it may not even have been Nick viewing, I'm only human)

Yeah the parts where >!the soldiers turning on each other freaked me out as a military member. Especially the chapter that has the military radio chatter regarding the college campus quarantine.!<

The absolute craziest one for me though was >!with the “Junta scene” where the black Marines having been driven to madness from captain trips are holding a military trial and 62 public executions of their fellow service members in a captured political debate room.!<

>!They have the lottery ball thing and are pulling audience members to execute while camera operators broadcast to the local area.!<

>!Then when the a uninfected batch military arrives they just gun the place down and kill everyone inside regardless. !<

I put the book down after that and just sat there “like what the fuck did I just read?”

Charles Bonnett Syndrome is my favourite one on there. That and Room 733 by Rebecca Klingel are the two I'd like them to read the most.

And if they like the old classics, Autopilot was uploaded in 2013 and I'm honestly surprised they haven't been there yet.

Best horror stories to read online

Here are some key considerations for finding the best horror stories online:

  1. Short Stories vs. Novels: Decide whether you prefer short stories for quick thrills or longer novels for deeper immersion in horror.

  2. Sub-genres: Horror has many sub-genres, including psychological, supernatural, gothic, and thriller. Identify what type of horror you enjoy most.

  3. Author Reputation: Look for works by well-known horror authors like Stephen King, H.P. Lovecraft, Shirley Jackson, and Clive Barker, or explore emerging writers on platforms like Wattpad or Medium.

  4. Online Platforms: Utilize websites like:

    • Wattpad: Great for discovering new and indie authors.
    • Project Gutenberg: Offers free access to classic horror literature.
    • Creepypasta: A collection of user-generated horror stories that are often shared online.
  5. Anthologies and Collections: Consider anthologies like "The Best Horror of the Year" series or "Night Shift" by Stephen King for a curated selection of stories.

Recommendations:

  • "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson: A classic short story that explores themes of tradition and societal norms.
  • "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson: A novel that masterfully blends psychological horror with supernatural elements.
  • "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman: A chilling tale about mental health and confinement.

These stories are not only well-crafted but also offer a range of horror experiences that can cater to different tastes. Happy reading!
