TL;DR The Thermapen is widely regarded as the best instant-read thermometer, praised for its speed and accuracy, but it comes at a premium price. For budget-friendly options, consider the Thermopop or Lavatools Javelin.
Thermapen
The Thermapen is consistently recommended across discussions as one of the best instant-read thermometers available. It provides accurate temperature readings in under two seconds and features a lighted display that rotates automatically [2:1]
[2:4]. Users appreciate its rugged design and reliability, although it is more expensive than other options, typically costing around $60 or more
[2:3]
[3:1].
Thermopop
For those looking for a less expensive alternative, the Thermopop from Thermoworks is highly recommended. It offers similar accuracy to the Thermapen but takes slightly longer to read temperatures. Many users find it to be an excellent choice for home cooks who don't need the professional-grade speed of the Thermapen [4:4]
[5:5]. The Thermopop is often available for around $26 during sales
[4:3].
Lavatools Javelin
Another popular budget option is the Lavatools Javelin, which has been praised for its durability and accuracy. It features a backlit screen and a magnetic design for easy storage [5:2]
[5:4]. Users have reported using it successfully for several years, making it a reliable choice for those not wanting to spend over $20
[5:10].
Other Recommendations
The Comark PDT-300 was mentioned as a good option for home use [2:6], and ThermoPro thermometers were highlighted in review articles as strong contenders
[3:2]. Consumer Reports also gave high ratings to CDN Pro models
[3:2].
Sales and Discounts
Several users noted that Thermoworks products, including the Thermapen and Thermopop, often go on sale, particularly during events like Black Friday [5:11]. This can be a great opportunity to purchase these high-quality thermometers at a reduced price.

Iām looking to get one for home use and havenāt liked the ones Iāve found on Amazon.
Thermapen here too- I've been very happy with it.
Thermapen is one of the best, and also the most expensive. But once you give it a try, you'll see why it's the best. Accurate temp in under two seconds.
Fuck I gotta talk my KM into ordering some of those the ones we have take at least 15 or 20 seconds
Yeah, those would be the $5 ones. A Thermapen goes for at least $60. I see deals sometime, but they're definitely expensive. But also frighteningly accurate.
Not in the industry, but I have a couple of Thermapen MK4s and I love them. Super fast, easy to read (lighted display automatically rotates), and seem to be pretty rugged. YMMV of course.
Thermapen is the best, pricey but worth it. Javelin makes good ones as well
I'm a Comark PDT-300 kinda guy. Honestly better for home use than pro because i used to break em constantly.
Awesome! Thank you.
I've been looking for a thermometer which is, well, actually good. For some reason this has been very difficult for me.
The cheap sub $20 ones from the store seem to be trash. The single button on the one we bought stopped working, so we had to take he battery out to turn it off.
We bought a fancy Bluetooth one from Amazon and it screamed whenever it was put near a hot environment. I don't have a deep fryer so when I was trying to get oil in a pot up to temp, the radiant heat was too much and the thermometer was not happy. We returned it.
I'm looking for a good instant read thermometer which is both heat and water resistant, and has a good contrast display (my eyes are very bad due to a degenerative condition so analog with small numbers are frustrating to use for me, although I could manage if it's really a good thermometer.)
Thanks in advance!
Both of the following review articles say good things about ThermoPro
https://www.seriouseats.com/best-instant-read-thermometers-5323231#toc-the-winners-at-a-glance
Consumer Reports gave it's top rating to a CDN Pro selling for $68+ at Walmart, but a very close second went to a ThermoPro TP19H that's selling at Home Depot for $18.99.
Personally, my thermometer is still going strong and doesn't need replacing. It's analog, was made by Pyrex and is no longer for sale new (but it does seem to have a healthy market on Etsy, Poshmark, etc for resale used).
I have a LavaTools off Amazon. Been fine for something like 6 years.
Thermapen One is expensive, but it's rugged and accurate and easy to read and doesn't have exposed buttons and comes in lots of colors. They go on sale a couple of times a year.
Hello friends! Iām looking to get a new thermometer to use around the kitchen, but Iām trying to avoid all the cheap, low quality Chinese-made junk that has been flooding Amazon recently. Iām sure some of you know what Iām talking about. Iāve been burned on a handful of purchases in the past year or so. Thatās an awful feeling when you hold a tool for the first time, or go to use it, and you can tell right away that, A: itās a piece of dookie, and, B: youāve been screwed. Had & Hoodwinked. Duped & Deceived. Dare I say... BAMBOOZLED!
Anyways, I was thinking something like this. I believe theyāre called thermapens? Iāve been watching /u/OliverBabishās show from the beginning, and thatās the kind of thermometer he uses in all his videos. From what Iāve seen it performs extraordinarily well.
As far as what purposes I need it to fulfill, Iād like to be able to use it for: meats (roasted, grilled, fried, and boiled), hot drinks (especially tea and coffee), oil (deep frying), sous vide, custards, ice cream, and baking. And as for my budget, I think Iād prefer something no more than $60. But if you know of one thatās accurate and durable and will last me for years, Iām willing to go as high as $100.
As I said above, any and all recommendations are welcome. Thank you so much for your time and assistance. :)
Thermapen mk4 is the best, or they have less expensive pocket probes like the Thermopop or their upgraded version, Dash. They rotate 20-25% sales across all their popular models.
I have a thermapen mk 4 and a dot. I use both extensively and love them both. When you catch them on sale, you can probably get both for under $100 combined although the thermapen mk 4 is at your $100 limit normally no sale.
I'd consider stepping down to the thermoworks Pop (~$26 on sale right now?) and then adding the Dot to make sure I get the Dot though, the probe thermo is very useful too. Love the company and accuracy though, it's hard to beat.
The Thermapen you linked is great, but honestly it's overkill for home cooks. If you're on a budget, just get the much cheaper Thermopop, also from Thermoworks. It takes maybe a second or two longer to read, but otherwise is just as good in practical use. Still very accurate, still lasts for ages.
As someone with one, I agree that it's over kill. I got mine as a gift but I could never justify the full price. It's a perfect gift item though, "something you'd want but couldn't justify buying". Absolute banger gift for the aspiring cook in your life, they will likely appreciate it
The thermopen is the best one out there but. There is a cheaper one called the Thermopop which is almost as good. I have used both and I think theyāre both worth it
I love my Thermapen - the one you posted a picture of. I have been using the same one for more than 10 years and only replaced the battery once.
Any recommendations for an instant thermometer? Iām starting to get more into breads and baked goods - Iām very much in the novice stage where I donāt trust my judgement just yet. TIA!
$20 on Amazon had two of them for the last 10 years. Perfect.
Thermoworks has the best thermometers. These are two depending on your price range.
Pretty sure they're going to be/are having Black Friday sales too so it's a good time to buy!
They usually do and they are worth it. Iāve had my Thermapen for many years now and it is incredibly accurate and they have great customer support.
This is the best! Do not waste your money on ācheaperā alternative.
I wound up buying the Thermopop 2 yesterday!! Thank you so much to everyone who recommended this one:)
Yay! Hope you love it! I had the previous version for a few years and liked it. I gave it to a friend when I bought the mk4 (itās now discontinued).
I've bought a few meat thermometers in the past, but they were never very accurate and, because they were made of cheap plastic, didn't last more than a year. The Lavatools Javelin PRO works well and is very accurate. It's much stronger than the rest. I love that it has a magnet somewhere in it so I can store it on the side of the stove or fridge. Also love the backlit screen for BBQs late at night. Very happy with this purchase and would recommend it to everyone.
I was just getting into breads and baking and asked this exact question about six months ago. Someone recommended the thermopop as a high quality for the price option and I got one. I've been using it two or three times a week and it's been great, much better quality than anything you can get at Walmart or Target, and it comes in lots of fun colors. :-)
This is what I got! I love it. Iām slowly getting into baking as well, so Iām hopeful to get great use of this!
Buy anything with good reviews and below $25 on Amazon. Unless you're working with chocolate, you don't need to spend a lot.
Hi everyone, which is the most accurate instant read the monitor out of the box that does not need any calibration?
Thermoworks thermapen
x2. NIST-traceable certification:
https://www.thermoworks.com/thermometry101_calibration_methods_and_traceability
Thermapen
They are on sale at the moment. https://www.thermoworks.com/Thermapen-Mk4?quantity=1&color=3
How does the case hold up against heat? Iāve kind of fucked some cheaper ones with using them for quick checks over the grill.
I've never had an issue, but I've probably not had my cook surface above 450 when using.
Is $100 the regular price? Why is this so expensive?
They run sales several times a year and go down to $79 or so. I dragged my feet for years on them before pulling the trigger and got one for me and one for my dad. Life changing? No. Any regrets? No.
Because it is that good. Seriously.
You wanted most accurate. Good luck finding a cheap instant read that is also accurate.
Bro- thanks for the heads-up. On sale for $69!?!
I jumped on that like a cat on a Junebug.
Dang. Site is down for maintenance right now.
Inkbirdā¦accurate and inexpensive.
ThermoWorks Thermapen
I started buying people thermapens for birthdays and what not. It's easily the biggest game changer in cooking for me.
We did that a few years ago - Thermoworks had a big sale in August and we got Thermapens for everyone in the family. So Christmas shopping was largely done 4 months early.
And it was a hit all around. My BIL is an engineer and, if you get a measuring device for an engineer and itās a hit, thatās a good measuring device.
The ThermoWorks Pop is also great and the first gen model is currently on sale for $21. Itās a steal at that price. I have a few pops and a Thermapen and just use whatever is closest.
Literally just bought 2 more because of the sale price. The one we got for our wedding 6 years ago works great and use it nearly every day. Will probably end up giving these away as gifts.
Hmm, subjective. I would definitely suggest Alpha Grillers though. It's cheap, waterproof, and gets an accurate read within 3 seconds. dropped mine on the grill numerous times, and it's lasted this long!!!

Honestly; my $16 Alpha Grillers thermometers kills it. I've been using this one for around 2 years primarily on my Traeger grill and it works great. I've spend more than 3x as much previously and this one does just as good if not better of a job haha.
Thermopen.
Therm pro
Same. Itās just as good as the ThermoWorks pen and costs 1/4 of the price. I bet if you opened both up youād see the exact same components too. The 3/4 extra people are paying is for the brand name
X 3
If you're going to be using it a million times a day, it is absolutely worth it. You don't have to keep turning it on, and it reads in about a second. Every other one I've used doesn't stand up to the test, but I've had the same thermapen for nearly a decade.
Got myself a thermapen one as a treat when it was on sale. Itās simple yet incredible
Iāve loved Thermapens for a long time, but damn the one is kinda disappointing. Itās way less durable than the original.
The auto roaring screen is super nice tho, and def fastest and thinnest probe on the market far as I know.
Iāve loved Thermapens for a long time, but damn the one is kinda disappointing. Itās way less durable than the original.
The auto rotating screen and motion sense on when you pick it up is super nice tho. Also the fastest and thinnest probe on the market far as I know.
Thermapen mostly but I also have a couple of Inkbirds.
Here to say Inkbird.
Thermapen one, worth it at whatever price you get it for. It's the standard because it's the best.
Iirc I actually used a code through something like americas test kitchen or something, ended up being about $70.
Imo while itās definitely a splurge, I think of it as worth it, itās also fine to sometimes just want something nice and worth is very much subjective.
I use it fairly often and at the time was primarily looking for bbq purposes but Iāve used it on all sorts of things since then including baked breads.
It does give some peace of mind knowing it is likely incredibly accurate. Itās quick, super easy to use and simple, and on top of that I had gone through a few cheaper thermometers before then (an attempt at justifying the expense, buy once cry once). A more correct statement would likely be that others had gone through my thermometers by improperly using them, but this one I almost protect, i am the only one who uses it, similar to much of my nicer kitchen equipment including knives.
The TermoPop 2 is 50$ for the 8ā and $40 for the 4.5 inch. Works just like the thermopen just 2 second reading instead of 1 second. Made by the same company
Its worth it if you are going to use it frequently. I used to say that i was never going to buy an expensive instant read, but after having 3 cheap ones break on me i bought a thermapen and havent had any issues since. Buy once cry once type of purchase
Javelin pro for home and the little guy for work. Love them
Thermapen ONE and Thermapen Pop 2.
The wife wants to get me a birthday present and is wanting to get me a instant thermometer. She asked me which one do I want. Honestly have no clue. So was looking at the thermoworks thermopen. Anyone have any recommendations?
The Thermopen One is arguably the holy grail of instant reads.
There are other options, but Thermoworks are well respected and a quality company. Highly recommended.
Thanks! Wife just ordered it
ThermoPro makes a decent therno-meter.
It's not fancy but it does the job.
I buy them, and leave them at family's houses where I end up grilling.
Thanks!!
Thanks!!
You're welcome!
You gotta just eyeball it
Thermapen One, baby!
Typhur Instaprobe blows away the Thermopen. I have both
ThermoPOP
Therapin One
The Typhur InstaProbe is hands down my top choice! It's the go-to thermometer in my household, lightning-fast, and the design and display are top-notch. I used to swear by Thermopro, but never again after trying this one.
best instant-read thermometer
Key Considerations for Choosing an Instant-Read Thermometer:
Speed: Look for a thermometer that provides readings in 2-3 seconds for quick temperature checks, especially useful when cooking.
Accuracy: Ensure the thermometer has a high level of accuracy (±1°F or better) to guarantee precise temperature readings.
Temperature Range: A good instant-read thermometer should cover a wide temperature range, typically from -58°F to 572°F (-50°C to 300°C), to accommodate various cooking needs.
Display: A large, easy-to-read display is important, especially in low-light conditions. Some models also feature backlit screens.
Durability: Choose a thermometer that is water-resistant or waterproof for easy cleaning and longevity.
Calibration: Some thermometers allow for calibration, which can help maintain accuracy over time.
Recommendations:
ThermoWorks Thermapen ONE: This is often regarded as the gold standard for instant-read thermometers. It offers a super-fast reading (1 second), high accuracy, and a wide temperature range. It's also waterproof and has a rotating display for easy reading.
Lavatools Javelin PRO Duo: A more budget-friendly option, this thermometer provides fast readings (about 2-3 seconds), has a large display, and features a magnetic back for easy storage.
Both options are excellent, but if you want the best performance and durability, the Thermapen ONE is worth the investment. If you're looking for something more affordable without sacrificing too much quality, the Lavatools Javelin PRO Duo is a solid choice.
