What Redditors are Saying

Best Kitchen Gadgets

TL;DR

  • Popular gadgets include immersion blenders, air fryers, and instant pots.
  • Essential tools like good knives, cutting boards, and thermometers are frequently recommended.

Immersion Blenders

Immersion blenders are a favorite among many home cooks for their versatility. They are particularly useful for making soups, sauces, and even homemade salad dressings without the need for a full-sized blender [1:1][2:2]. The Bamix brand is highly praised for its durability and performance [3:1][3:2].

Air Fryers and Instant Pots

Air fryers and instant pots are popular for their convenience and ability to speed up cooking times. Air fryers are appreciated for reducing cooking time and dishes, while instant pots are valued for their versatility in preparing a variety of meals with minimal effort [1:4][2:4][5:9]. Some users also enjoy using an instant pot with an air fryer lid attachment for added functionality [2:9].

Knives and Cutting Boards

A good chef's knife is considered essential by many cooks, as it significantly improves the cooking experience and efficiency [4:3][5:2]. Brands like Henkel’s are mentioned for their quality [4:7]. Additionally, having a durable cutting board, such as a Boos Block or epicurean board, is crucial for daily use [4:1][5:3].

Thermometers and Zesters

Instant-read meat thermometers are invaluable for ensuring perfectly cooked meats [1:7][5:5]. Microplane zesters are another must-have gadget, ideal for grating cheese, zesting citrus, and mincing garlic [3:3][4:11].

Additional Useful Gadgets

Other notable mentions include vacuum sealers for food preservation [1:2], mandolin slicers for quick vegetable prep [1:2], and toaster ovens for efficient cooking without heating up the entire kitchen [5:8]. A good vegetable peeler can also save significant time in meal preparation [5:1].

ORIGINAL POST

So recently I got into cooking a little bit more and I was looking at the best pot and pan set (still undecided). I also was looking at cool new kitchen gadgets. Anyway, I thought it might be fun to post on Reddit asking what is your most used or favorite kitchen appliance or Gadget and try to be specific. For example, I guess mine would be:

  1. Of course my Keurig and corsair air fryer get daily use, as I'm sure most do.
  2. I also use my vacuum Sealer daily. I had a FoodSaver for like years but just bought Nesco Pro, which has been great.
  3. I use my Bluevua RO water filter machine multiple homes daily for years now. 4.Vitamix blender and zojirushi rice maker are used weekly.
  4. In trying to think of fun gadgets I use a lot but I'm coming up empty. It's so fun but I use a lemon juicer a lot it's a handheld squish one. Or tofu press.

If anyone has a pots and pan sets they swear by definitely let me know or any unique kitchen gadgets but I just thought it would be fun to see what other people's most used kitchen appliances were. Anyway thank you for any responses have a great day!

If you do things that require tons of slicing of veggies, a mandolin slicer is very handy, but look for one with a guard for your hand. Those things can be quite dangerous if you get too cocky.

I use my Cuisinart 14 cup food processor frequently enough that I do not regret buying it in the slightest.

If you bake, consider one of these mixers. https://www.ankarsrum.com/us/ Kitchenaid mixers have a clause about using them to mix dough for too long or too fast. I want one of those Ankarsrum, but I haven't quite convinced myself to drop that much money, yet.

Do you have an immersion blender? A KitchenAid mixer? Great knives? Fabulous dishwasher (where would I BE without the dishwasher???) The exact appliances (refrigerator, stove, etc) you need?

I am the dishwasher lol I would love to have one but nope. My husband is really in denying so I do actually have expensive knives that he keeps Sharp. KitchenAid check but I do not have an immersion blender what kind of stuff do you use it for like smoothies and everything or not so much?

I don’t care for smoothies myself, but you could use it for that. It’s great for soups and sauces, or anything small you need to purée or blend without messing up the entire blender jug.

Kitchen aid, my husband bought an off brand and it blew my mind then he used it once to make banana bread and thought the bump on the bottom needed be knocked out now the paddle had nothing to go around.

I angry stomped to my car and came back with a beautiful blue kitchen aid. I still love that thing. Or the toaster oven.

I came across my absolute favorite zester by pure accident when shopping at an HEB once. It has a cap thingie on it with a built in scraper and measurements on it so you can know how much you zested and keep it all contained until you’re ready to add it to the dish. Less than $20 at the time. So far I’ve had to buy three because the first one got stolen, the second one got broken by someone else, and the third is still going strong over five years running now.

100%. Everything these people said. I use my immersion blender all the time.

I also have a giant, 4 inch deep lasagna pan with handles that is great for everything from beef bourguignon to pork roast with cracklin on veggies to cottage pie.

And, you can never have a big enough stock pot, right?

Lastly, my life is so much better after getting a couple extra soup & gravy ladles. I use them all the time.

It's surprising how many avid home cooks don't own one. I've been cooking for a long time, but until a few years ago it never occurred to me to buy one. And then I watched a chef on Triple D use one to turn a chunky sauce into something silky and smooth and I realized that I just had to have one. 😁

Highly highly highly recommend a microplane. You don't really know how good they are until you get one. Good for grating cheeses, zest, garlic, ginger, anything, and so easy to clean.

Some people grate nutmeg too but I've heard that damages the blades.

Currently I am in love with my new salad spinner. I cannot believe I went so long without one. I grow my own lettuce and it gets pretty dirty. I used to wash it and then lay it all out to dry or pat dry with paper towels. The result was limp lettuce most of the time. I feel like a fool for taking so long but I'm always hesitant to bring more clutter into my kitchen.

Quarter sheet pans are unsung heroes in the kitchen. I don't bake often and hated using my full sheet when something required it. After I bought two quarters with racks I use them all the time. Seconded on the steam table and pans. A good quality one can be used as a slow cooker with multiple dishes going at the same time(with the proper pans and dividers) as well as their intended purpose of holding things hot.

I mention this as it would be a good way to make an all day stock or stew similar to using a crock pot, but being able to pull any scrap meat or stock bones you have in the freezer and doing multiple batches all at once would be amazing. You just have to make sure it doesn't steam out the bottom chamber in the process, checking it every 4 or 5 hours.

I know it's an unorthodox use for one, but have salvaged under cooked tough brisket (already cut and portioned by my idiot coworker) by letting the slices simmer in the au jus on one all day, then laying them out to cool and re-portioning them. It wasn't perfect, but it worked and didn't run the risk of burning or overcooking like it would have if I'd done it in the oven or tossed the slices back on the smoker.

If I ever get the chance to design my own home kitchen, it's definitely going to have commercial reach-in fridges and speed racks that can handle hotel pans and inserts. I'll probably even have a lowboy prep station in there and a french top stove.

Seriously, can you even imagine how much nicer it would be to host a taco party or build your own pizza party with a lowboy filled with legit inserts instead of having a pile of random bowls and dishes for ingredients taking up all the counter space? And then the leftovers can go right into the fridge without having to decant them into food storage containers and making even more dishes to wash.

Either an electric hand mixer or a stand mixer. Both highly useful. The hand mixer is much cheaper though, so I would recommend starting with a good quality hand mixer first to begin with, since there is quite a big difference in price. If you wind up cooking a lot, I would consider purchasing a good quality stand mixer, but only if you cook a lot since they cost hundreds of dollars. They're good to use if you bake a lot.

A way to organize & edit recipes. I don’t buy anything with recipes if I haven’t photographed a recipe, tried it, & it turned out a winner.

Good knives. You don’t need lots of them. And they need to be sharp.

Your pots & pans don’t have to match, so buy what you need.

I use a large cast iron skillet daily. (I don’t do sauces in cast iron)

My next most used pan is a Dutch oven. Tonight is pot roast.

Good, not gimmicky measuring tools.

The more you use a scale, the more you will use it.

I adore fresh bread. A bread machine from Goodwill is maybe $10. Fresh bread is only about 2 hours away. Pizza crust. Cinnamon rolls. Cute little dinner rolls.

I agree with a lot of the other things people have said, especially the bench scrapper. I’ll add in one I haven’t seen mentioned yet: a decent set of mixing bowls. They’re great for holding prepped ingredients, mixing things (obviously); if they’re all metal or glass you can use them for gentle heating over boiling water (hollandaise, carbonara etc).

I also have a largish mesh strainer with a handle that I use regularly. It’s a lot more convenient than a colander when you don’t need that much capacity.

It all depends on your budget and cooking habits.

A high quality japanese cleaver is also a staple and will replace all your knives. It's refreshing just having the one that does everything. Plus...less to clean.

I have one with a mini food processor and whisk attachments. So it is a triple win and takes up little space. If you have tall cups you can make drinks too.

If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative, the SMAK knock off of Thermopen is pretty much identical as far as I can tell, I’ve had it over a year and it works great.

It didn't even occur to me that that's a tool worth mentioning. Since European recipes are mostly in weight, not volume, it's a very basic item to have.

Key Considerations for Kitchen Gadgets:

  1. Functionality: Choose gadgets that serve multiple purposes or simplify common tasks (e.g., a multi-cooker can pressure cook, slow cook, and sauté).

  2. Space Efficiency: Consider the size and storage needs of the gadget. Compact or stackable options are ideal for smaller kitchens.

  3. Ease of Use: Look for gadgets that are user-friendly and require minimal setup or complicated instructions.

  4. Durability: Opt for high-quality materials (like stainless steel or BPA-free plastic) that can withstand regular use.

  5. Cleaning and Maintenance: Gadgets that are dishwasher safe or easy to clean will save you time and effort.

Top Recommendations:

  1. Instant Pot: A versatile multi-cooker that can pressure cook, slow cook, sauté, steam, and more. Great for saving time and space.

  2. Spiralizer: Perfect for making vegetable noodles, adding a healthy twist to your meals. Compact and easy to use.

  3. Food Processor: Essential for chopping, slicing, and pureeing. A good food processor can significantly speed up meal prep.

  4. Immersion Blender: Ideal for soups, smoothies, and sauces. It’s easy to clean and takes up less space than a traditional blender.

  5. Cast Iron Skillet: A durable and versatile cooking tool that can be used on the stovetop or in the oven. It retains heat well and improves with use.

  6. Digital Kitchen Scale: Perfect for precise measurements, especially for baking. A scale can help ensure consistent results.

Takeaway: Invest in gadgets that enhance your cooking experience and fit your lifestyle. Prioritize quality and versatility to make the most of your kitchen space and time.
