Please don't just shred the machines if you can avoid it: the hard drives sure, call proshred or whoever - but look for a local charity you can donate the rest to. You can write it off on your company's taxes: so bill it as saving them a few bucks.

When I had several old PCs to dispose of, I bought a small screwdriver with all the variations of driver bits, and eventually, I was able to disassemble a hard drive within 5 minutes. The controller boards went to e-waste, I kept the screws in a jar, and the hard drive chassis made of billet aluminum made for a nice trip to the scrap yard. I’d like to see someone get useful data off several dozen loose, bent, and scratched up aluminum platters. One of the smallest drives had glass platters (still ferrous oxide coated). And now I have a nice collection of neodymium magnets to play with.

Best way to handle that pile is to think less about wiping one by one and more about chain of custody. You want bulk erasure with certs so no one in finance or legal freaks out later. Anything less and you’re just hoping a drive wasn’t missed. There are companies that handle pickup storage wipe and reporting all in one. Workwize is one of them and people also mention TechReset. Makes life easier than baby sitting each laptop.

Find an e-recycler. There are charities that will e-recycle your old laptops and give it new life in schools and such. They will also wipe and provide certification of it being wiped/destroy. We use Era ourselves https://www.era.ca/donate-to-charities/

Just chiming in to rule out the Panga for laptops/commuting. The zipper is thick and has a waterproof lock that will drive you nuts trying to get into multiple times a day.

That’s really just a utility bag for full waterproofing gear out on a boat, kayak etc..

I have almost all of the yeti backpacks. I have the crossroads 22, 27 and 35, ranchero 22 and 27 and the panga.

In my opinion, the crossroads 27 is the best for every day usage, followed by the ranchero 27.

The crossroads 22 doesn’t have the typical clam shell style opening and it’s annoying to get stuff in and out.

The crossroads 35 is more for extra clothes and stuff. It opens ALL the way up with a whole zipper section inside like a suitcase, which makes things annoying to get out on the go.

The ranchero 22 is just a little too small

The Panga is great if you’re near water but the zipper is stuff and it has no organization.

The new cayo does not fit a laptop they say.

So now we’re down to the crossroads 27 and the ranchero 27

The ranchero 27 is cool, I do like it. I like the padded shoulder straps a lot and the small pockets on the top of the inside of the main compartment. And I really like how it will stand if you put it on the ground. I don’t like the way the luggage strap works and I don’t like the harness for the regular shoulder straps. And the bag is bulky. It doesn’t sit down when you wear it like. Normal backpack, so it sticks out on your back further. And the “cool” Y shaped zipper is cool at first but gets old.

The 27 is more traditional with the way it opens and sits on the ground. It has plenty of organization on the inside but it will not stand up when you sit it down. I do like the luggage strap on this one better (the part that hooks to a suitcase handle to stack on a suitcase if you need that). The downside is if you don’t keep it fill, it gets an annoying center fold that makes it too heavy. This bag would be perfect if they added the padded shoulder straps, removed one of the water bottle holders to be used as an easy pass through to get to the stuff at the bottom of the backpack and find a way not to make it have that annoying center fold when empty.

If I was to buy just 1 right now, it would be the crossroads 27.

Also heard a rumor of another new backpack so we’ll see…

Had the 27L crossroads and sold it to upgrade to the 27L Ranchero. I definitely prefer the Ranchero. It’s probably a bit bigger than necessary for my commutes to the office, but it’s a perfect bag for weekend travel and flying.

Recently carried two laptops in the designated area and then multiple pairs of shoes, clothes, etc. on the return trip after buying some new things during the trip.

The fact that it sits upright, has the 3-zip opening for easy access to contents at the bottom of your bag, and IMO looks way better, are what make it a no-brainer for me over the Crossroads.

Again, 27L is more space than I need for a daily commute to the office, but its utility for travel makes it worthwhile to use for both use cases. If money were no object, I’d probably do the Ranchero 22L for office commutes, but I don’t need more backpacks in my life haha.

Ranchero 27 here. Has a laptop sleeve that I fit my MacBook in the sleeve and my iPad on the outer part of the sleeve. Ranchero is definitely dope would try it out. Like the 3 zippers to

Crossroad or ranchero 27. Both have exterior computer compartments. If you’re a freak for zippers and inner pockets organization etc maybe the crossroads. If you like outside water bottle access the ranchero. The ranchero does have load bearing straps that are more padded (how’s your back?) and the ranchero does stand on its own which is really cool.

Unless you’re commuting in a rainstorm constantly, you do not need a cayo or panga.

What size laptop and what volume? Budget and your location for purchasing?

I have been using Osprey Arcane Roll Top for a few years now, it is stylish and functioning enough for me to bring it to office and travel. Comfortable shoulder straps equipped with water bottle sleeve and a laptop compartment.

Another similar backpack is Deuter Stepout 22. I have a Deuter backpacking/hiking backpack, and its material is excellent.

If you have a bigger budget, you may take a look on the Bellroy Tokyo Totepack. This is more of a leisure/office style and less outdoorsy.
