Considerations Beyond the Discussions
When choosing a laptop brand, consider your specific needs such as portability, battery life, and performance requirements. If gaming or graphics-intensive tasks are important, brands like Asus or MSI might be worth exploring for their dedicated GPU options [4:1]. For general student use, prioritize features like SSD storage for faster load times and an IPS display for better viewing angles

hi guys I’m gonna be starting uni next month and currently only have an iPad. However, I heard that a laptop is necessary. So as a life science major or just any Uni students, what’s the best brand of laptop to get? Mac, Lenovo, Hp?? thanks guys.
MacBook Air hands down. Light, reliable, fast, powerful
mac
Really hard to advice on a specific brand of laptop in general without knowing more about your context and usage patterns or use case.
Are you someone who often does things on the side such as video editing? Do you do anything relating to GPU-intensive tasks? Do you need/want to game? Are you concerned about weight and portability? Does a good screen matter to you?
There is a lot of questions you have to provide details first before one can really say this is the best for you, however below are some general tips:
Anything else feel free to ask!
Since college classes are starting in a few days and new students enrolling and with majority of them buying a new laptop. I was wondering which brand has the best customer care service. And should most of the students just buy mac due to their longer life span and apple being a more respected brand and in hope of getting faster solution in case of an issue and also mac's have longer battery life which is essential especially in case of students?
Lenovo ≈ Dell > HP > Asus > others.
Even apple???
Oh Apple is on the top in warranty.
in my perspective,HP and dell provide best service even though provide worst bulit quality..for bulid quality go for Lenovo and if you have a iphone just mac just any mac you wouldnt regret unless you use it for graphics level work or gaming.
I have a lenovo and I have had a quite different experience(the motherboard has had some issues the laptop easily bends( if you know what I mean) , there are issues with hinge and also the screen sometimes just starts doing weird stuff) with it , maybe it is just the model
Must be an old gen IdeaPad. You can buy a new Lenovo and exchange this one for an exchange bonus.
What is the best Laptop Brands?
How would rank the leading laptop brands—such as
Based on key factors like overall build quality reliability performance consistency customer support and longterm durability?
Additionally which brands stand out in specific areas such as premium design gaming performance or affordability?
Could you share your experience on quality and longevity?
Reliability, Build quality:Apple
Performance:Asus
That’s all from me but asus has not got the best customer support and the asus zephyrus series has build quality almost the same as apple or like apple and if you want productivity, longevity and battery life go with apple. If you want gaming go with asus or lenevo.
Thanks for Sharing. I like Asus and Lenevo. What do you think of Acer?
Acer is a budget laptop company.
Both lenovo and msi lost my business for good.
I had a lenovo gaming laptop with a 980 that failed. The charging port blew up where its soldered to the board right after warranty ended amd they refused to be helpful what so ever.
A few years after this incident, we had an issue with a faulty msi motherboard. Opened a ticket, sent them the board and they lost it. Tracking says it arrived, the diag reportedly started and after a qeek my ticket was closed, no return board. I dont remember exactly how that incident played out exactly, but i remember just giving up.
We stick to asus and eluktronics now
All of those brands premium tiers are fine, depending on taste, except Samsung. Samsung just can't figure out how to make a laptop.
All of them make both shit and gold. HP high end business laptops like the ZBooks are fantastic machines. HP unbranded laptops are worth less than the plastic used to build them.
I had a zbook 17 for work, mechanical engineering, it was the best computer I've ever had. Thing was unstoppable. Once my company replaced all the laptops: we switched to Dell inspirions. Those have never been able to match the zbooks. Also super nice to still have type a USB and type c on the same machine
Is HP victus a good one or bad one ?
Victus is decent for the price. About on par with Lenovo LOQ and Acer Nitro V16
One brand can have shitty laptops and bangers at the same time. MSI doesn’t make the best budget laptops but their high end 18 inch models are banger. The most consistent brand that you listed here I would say is Apple. All their products you can expect to be good(hence the premium price). They have great customer service(in my personal experience). Only downer I would say is long term reliability. Mac’s are built well and I know people who still uses 2015 Mac’s. but their soldered storage and ram kills longevity.
MSI seems quite a lot more expensive than most brands. Can't say I like Mac. But open to it.
What use case are you looking for in a laptop?
I’m looking for recommendations for a new laptop in 2025, and I have two needs: one for study and productivity and another for gaming. Ideally, I’d love to find one that can handle both, but I’m open to separate suggestions.
For a student laptop, I need something lightweight with great battery life (8+ hours) and strong enough to handle tools like Microsoft Office, Google Docs, and light creative work. My budget is around $800–$1200.
For a gaming laptop, I’m looking for good performance with a dedicated GPU (RTX 4060 or better) and a high refresh rate screen. My budget here is around $1500–$2000. Portability is a bonus, but cooling is important for long sessions.
Some models I’ve been considering:
Student: MacBook Air (M3), Dell XPS 13 Gaming: Asus ROG Zephyrus G16, Alienware x14 Does anyone have experience with these or other suggestions? Any models that balance both study and gaming would also be awesome.
Great question! The MacBook Air (M3) is best for students seeking lightweight design and long battery life, while the Dell XPS 13 is ideal for versatile productivity on a budget. For gaming, the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 and Alienware x14 shine with powerful GPUs and smooth performance. If you want a balance of both, consider the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro or Razer Blade 15, which combine productivity and gaming prowess. Let us know what you choose—I’d love to hear how it works for you!
Why These Are Better:
Each of these laptops excels in its category, so your choice depends on whether you prioritize portability, gaming power, or a balance of both. Whichever you choose, it’s clear that these models deliver excellent value and performance for their respective purposes. Let us know your pick—I’m excited to hear what works best for you!
Thank you so much for the detailed recommendations! The additional options like the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro and Razer Blade 15 sound amazing, especially for balancing study and gaming. I did come across some reviews mentioning a potential drawback with these models—like the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro being a bit heavier for portability and the Razer Blade 15 having slightly higher temperatures during extended gaming sessions. Do you think these concerns are significant, or do the performance benefits outweigh them? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
You’re absolutely right! These are valid concerns, and here’s why these issues might arise with these laptops:

Hello. I'm not very techy when it comes to tech talk kaya hindi ko alam what I should look for sa isang laptop. This is what I have in mind sana huhu, I hope you guys can help me out/recommend laptops.
Thank you!!!
Lenovo Ideapad Kung for documents lang powerpoint word excel facebook youtube kdrama pwede na yan. Pang school use pwedeng pwede na
Lenovo talaga OP.
Hello, i’m not sure if aabot yung 20k since depende sa specs ng laptop yung price. But for meee Lenovo brand ang aking bias because mine is still working. 2018 ko pa sha binili and it’s still alive and kicking. never ko rin napadala sa service center, tho gaming laptop kasi to which by that time 45k ko na bili. Pero what I always recommend to my friends is yung specs na dapat hanapin mo sa laptop:
u can get a cheaper laptop then get a 1TB hard drive nalang for 3k. Buy sa original shop para safe!!
Please for the love of god try to get one with an 1080p IPS panel. Don't get a TN one.
Sincerely, from someone who faced their laptops 24/7 and hated every minute of it. Got it upgraded just for review cuz I would just go mad lol
Lenovo thinkpad na second hand
Hej.
Tak for tippet.
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Lenovo+ThinkPad+X390+Battery+Replacement/145613
I am a university student currently looking for a replacement laptop. In the past 3 years of study I have had to replace my HP envy 13 twice because of system crash’s and screen issues
Long term reliability and durability is key. I have even started looking into gaming laptops but because my main use would be to write reports and internet sourcing I need advice. What laptop should I get??
Thinkpads are the go-to choice for reliability usually, but if it were me and I was buying a non gaming laptop, I think I'd check out something in the Samsung Galaxy Book Lineup. Samsung just makes excellent products in general so just seems like they'd be super solid.
I'm putting in a vote for a Lenovo ThinkPad (x or t series). Maybe even a used one. Can be had for cheap (depending on how new you want it). Replacement parts are usually easily available, i have always had good luck with ThinkPads. Especially compared to my other non-ThinkPad Laptops. Just my 2 cents.
I second this. I bought a bare bone 14 inch T480s and added a stick of RAM and my own SSD and it just works. I do lots of writing and coding and it haven't had any problem whatsoever. Battery life is around 6 hours which is good for an OEM battery.
If you want to go the "used thinkpad" path, I suggest checking out r/thinkpad. They can help you find the best thinkpad for your needs.
I second-second this, but you also want to make sure that your windows installation is nice and clean, get rid of any bloatware (antivirus and what not), and just make sure you keep everything updated and well maintained, any computer, even with a SSD can end up feeling like crap because the windows install gets too broken.
Thinkpad would be my bet, something from the X or T series (business line). A used one (refurbished model 2 or 3 years old) is basically what most of the students in my engineering course had.
Get a thinkpad, they are durable and last a long time
ThinkPads are pretty good, but please never ever buy a non-ThinkPad Lenovo, these are the very worst in terms of reliability.
Otherwise, ASUS, and Dell offerings are really good. Can't go wrong with one of those. HP is excellent as well, but since you had a bad experience with them I doubt you'll buy one again.
Please vote for the best brand for gaming laptops
Don't go for brands, go for models. Fanboying for a brand makes little sense. Brands release an entire spectrum of laptops for many budget brackets, some are better, some are worse
nah its not loyalty, gigabyte used to be ahead of the curve with its quality in 2000's but is a fiasco rn, esp with regards to software cant get settings to always stick or useless backgrpund drain, microsoft cant fix a stylus to draw a straight line even if steve's life depended on it, asus had good software but i havent kept up with their ai suit since 2013, msi used to be ass but now, their software quality and build quality is getting better. a laptop thats artificially neutered and forces first party crap down your throat isnt a good experience even if it looks amazing on paper. like assrock and its RGB controller and software. i'd argue that a brand thats at least listening to feedback is preferable to a tone deaf brand like asus and gigabyte lately, and its not gamersnexus either, ive got a dead gigabyte laptop thats a 2k paperweight because gigabye is a greedy pos. sorry for the rant
Lenovo nowadays
I am also for Lenovo.. It's the go-to for gaming laptops.. solid price, durability, and performance. Elevate your gaming with Lenovo
Only wish lenovo had 17inch laptops
i have a old lenovo laptop with 17inch screen
That’s what she said
Lenovo and ASUS. They both win this community, although many here are Pro-Lenovo
Not a prefrosh but still interested! Especially for a Bio/Chem major, what are the best laptops. Heard from a lot of people to not get a Mac :/
Dell XPS 13 or 15– Lightweight, extremely fast, perfect for college use
is the XPS 15 OK for light gaming? I'm talking Dota 2, Skyrim with mods, path of exile, and civ 6. I know it has a gtx 1050 but I heard it has thermal issues.
Depends on the different model’s specs. The XPS 15 has a couple different packages that include a better processor and such. However at the most basic level package, most likely not on the Skyrim and civ 6.
I got an xps 15, and it’s perfect
XPS 13 is what we're giving our senior for her birthday tomorrow.
What major are you going into? And what model Mac?
I have a MacBook Air. Not as expensive and has been working great for school/community college. It’s also pretty lightweight.
I'm bringing my Lenovo X1 Carbon. Great durability, battery, and good enough specs.
Great laptop!
The XPS 15 2 in 1 or the Surface Book 2 might fit your needs
Most likely the Huawei Matebook X Pro
shit's dope
surface book!
I'd like to keep the price under 600$. Probably going to do some gaming on it. I just need overall. What are currently best options on the market?
I would recommend this Acer Aspire E 15** because:
It comes with NVIDIA MX150 which is one of the best for this range but still not great for newer games Benchmark(use the same website to check the benchmarks of the other GPU from the right hand list).
Long battery life (advertised of up to 15-hours of battery life), weight 5.27 lbs, backlit keyboard, USB type C.
8GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, and both are somewhat standards in 600 range so finding them on 500~ range is somewhat a catch.
Here is a little in depth review of it :
It is made from plastic, but it feels sturdy, screen comes with anti glare finish so it will work well outside.
Battery life is great about 5-8 hours of general usage like you want.
Backlit keyboard, quite and comfortable, Trackpad have been getting some mixed reviews, I think it is a software issue, or maybe it is because some people are not used to trackpads.
Speakers are good, above average for laptops in this range, the gaming performance is also above average since it is only MX150 but it the best for the budget.
Thin, very quiet (can barely hear the fans), It has room for more ram as well as more SSD, Fingerprint magnet. If you want to check similar option make sure to check my post a list of best gaming laptops
At that price range the Acer Aspire E15 is generally the best laptop to get for students as it can do a little of everything
Screen Size : 15 inches
Processor : Core i5-8250U
Graphics : NVIDIA MX150
RAM : 8 GB
Weight : 5.27 lbs
Storage Type : 256 GB SSD
This laptop provides great bang for buck as it has a quad core CPU and a dedicated GPU. The RAM is easily upgraded and there is an empty bay for you to add a HDD or another SSD if you want more space.
Build wise the laptop is made of plastic but it is sturdy and strong enough to be able to take a few bumps while you travel. Its not ultrabook light but it does not feel like a brick either so you can travel with it.
While gaming it does not get hot or throttle (but don’t expect it to run AAA games on high)
