What Redditors are Saying

Best Laptop for Programming in 2024

TL;DR

  • MacBook Air: Highly recommended for its performance and value, especially from the Apple refurb store [3:1].
  • Lenovo Ideapad 5: Suggested for coding due to its balance of performance and price [4:5].
  • Framework Laptops: Noted for repairability and upgrade paths, though may lack high-end GPU options [5:1].

MacBook Air

The MacBook Air is frequently recommended for programming due to its efficient performance, long battery life, and portability. It is particularly praised when purchased from the Apple refurb store, which offers a more budget-friendly option without compromising on quality [3:1]. This laptop is suitable for general programming tasks and is known for its reliability.

Lenovo Ideapad 5

For those looking for a Windows-based machine, the Lenovo Ideapad 5 is suggested as a solid choice. It provides a good balance between performance and cost, making it ideal for students or professionals who need a reliable device for coding without breaking the bank [4:5]. Its specifications are generally sufficient for most programming needs, including web development and software engineering.

Framework Laptops

Framework laptops are highlighted for their modular design, allowing users to easily repair and upgrade components. This feature is particularly appealing to tech enthusiasts and those who prioritize sustainability. However, it's important to note that current models may not support high-end GPUs, which could be a limitation for tasks requiring substantial graphical processing power [5:1]. For programming, especially if you're interested in future-proofing your investment, Framework laptops offer a unique advantage.

Considerations for Specific Needs

When choosing a laptop for programming, consider the specific requirements of your work. If you plan to run complex simulations or AI models locally, a laptop with at least 16GB RAM and a decent GPU is recommended [4:3]. However, for general programming tasks, a strong CPU with good battery life might suffice [4:7]. Additionally, if you are involved in CAD or other engineering applications, ensure your laptop has adequate graphics capabilities [5:2].

What would you recommend as a good laptop for coding and programming in 2025?

Posted by BlitzCu · in r/laptops · 1 month ago

I'm interested in buying a laptop that's good for a developer that will last for the next several years. Nothing crazy expensive but I also don't want to cheap out.

What are your suggestions?

if and only if you want to run large models locally, prefer a laptop with 16gb ram and a decent gpu, and for that your choice looks good

Use Kaggle and google Collab . Your laptop can't run any good ai training unless you up your budget by 2× so pointless. Even then it will run max 8-14 b equivalent models .

Perhaps with a minimal margin of difference, you could get a higher-generation GPU.

The thing is, Victus, unless I'm mistaken, offers an RTX3050 with the same amount of VRAM as the RTX2050, which is a huge disgrace.

I want a Framework but is it the best laptop for me?

Posted by ReasonableAbalone671 · in r/framework · 2 months ago

I am a high schooler who is trying to replace their 10 year old 13 xps. I really like the ideas of framework and reparability and some upgrade path is something I find important. Right now I am a computer science and engineering student using solidwork, autocad and other engineering/coding applications. Should I get a framework, and if so which one should get?

Thank you if you decide to help

In my experience running autocad and solidworks for 10 years or so, you can run CAD in very limited hardware. You need at least integrated graphics and a decent processor with good single threaded performance, but even if you don't have that, you can still run things.

Model complexity is what kills performance and trust me, bloated models are hard to run even on towers.

Not sure which one should you get, but I am sure any i5 processor or better, 16gb ram or better will be ok for 90% of the CAD work you are going to be doing.

I run 3D AutoCAD and Shapr3D on a SurfaceGo2 ... that is a m3 processor from 5 years ago. Still does the job.

What do you mean by model complexity and bloated models?

1 upvotes on reddit
Difficult_Pop8262 · 2 months ago

Cad drawings with too many polygons/faces/lines. Drawings that have not been purged. Or full of loaded Xrefs. Or buggy. Things like that

SnakeGuy123 · 2 months ago

If you are planning to use Solidworks with large assemblies on a laptop you need something with a dedicated GPU. The Framework 16 isn't available with high end Nvidia GPUS and won't be for a while yet so I'd recommend something else.

Thinkpad (Good Linux compatibility)

-GOOD Keyboard

-SOLID Build

Just find these specs (Min):

CPU: AMD (generally better for battery)

RAM: 16 GB

SSD: 512 GB

100% sRGB (Not required for programming but good for watching movies.)

Backlit Keyboard.

It sounds like you are trying to start a new hobby. With all new hobbies don't spend 1000s getting started. Get something for studying and then program on it. If you enjoy programming AND start getting bogged down due to specs then you spend the 1000s.

You saying you want to learn all languages tells me this is sometime new to you. Enjoy it but don't go into stupid debt for it.

If battery life matters - consider Apple, if not - solid Windows machine like Thinkpad series, if you start and budget matters - buy cheap second hand, run apps on this and you will figure out what not working. Good second hand from business lines like mentioned before Thinkpad line can be used in future as spare laptop.

32GB AMD running Windows. You can put all sorts of VMs on it. Your target servers will surely run Linux unless you work for a Windows-centric org.

Or just use the native OS.

Both of those will be fine. But for the price you can find something better. I'd go for more ram.

You could use a 10 year old laptop for that. Definitely don't need something super fancy for programming in general. If you have money to burn, macs are fine. Plenty of sub-$1k laptops will do just fine...I like Asus

You don't need anything crazy to program. ProBook is actually overkill.

EDIT: it depends on the programming you're looking to do, but at the same time, most programming languages don't require you to have the craziest laptop.

If you're going to be getting into LLM then I wouldn't get a budget laptop. There are a lot of factors. You don't need a MBP though and drop like 3K.

Bought a thinkpad e16 for my father 6 months ago, its pretty good overall and the build quality seems to be great as well.

I definitely would say to stay away from Dell inspiron series, i had one and the hinges broke 3 times until it finally was out of warranty and Dell quoted me 15k to fix it again.

I also have a HP 15s which is mediocre with a low quality shitty display with 45% sRGB TN panel

I think you should definitely go for a thinkpad

Edit: most thinkpad have a 45% NTSC IPS panel so its not the best you can get in terms of display quality. I'd recommend getting something with 99% or 100% sRGB if you will do any UI work or photo editing or watching movies

best laptop for programming 2024

Key Considerations for Choosing a Laptop for Programming in 2024:

  1. Processor: Look for at least an Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processor. For more demanding tasks, consider i7 or Ryzen 7.

  2. RAM: Aim for a minimum of 16GB of RAM. This allows for smooth multitasking and running resource-intensive applications.

  3. Storage: An SSD (Solid State Drive) is essential for faster boot times and application loading. Look for at least 512GB of storage, or more if you work with large files.

  4. Display: A high-resolution display (at least Full HD, 1920x1080) is important for comfortable coding and debugging. Consider a laptop with good color accuracy if you're also doing design work.

  5. Battery Life: Look for a laptop with at least 8 hours of battery life to ensure you can work without being tethered to a power outlet.

  6. Keyboard Quality: A comfortable, responsive keyboard is crucial for long coding sessions. Look for laptops with good reviews on keyboard feel.

Recommendations:

  • Apple MacBook Pro (M2 Chip): Excellent performance, long battery life (up to 20 hours), and a high-quality Retina display. Ideal for software development, especially for iOS and macOS applications.

  • Dell XPS 13/15: Known for its sleek design, powerful performance, and great display. The XPS series offers options for high RAM and storage configurations.

  • Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon: Renowned for its keyboard quality and durability. It offers strong performance and good battery life, making it a favorite among developers.

  • ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14: If you're into game development or need a powerful GPU, this laptop offers excellent performance with a Ryzen 9 processor and dedicated graphics.

Final Tip: Consider your specific programming needs (e.g., web development, data science, game development) when choosing a laptop, as this can influence the specifications that are most important for you.
