What Redditors are Saying

MacBook Pro vs Air for Graphic Design

TL;DR

  • MacBook Pro: Better for sustained performance, superior display, and more ports. Ideal for professional graphic designers who need the best color accuracy and work on intensive tasks.
  • MacBook Air: More portable, lighter, and sufficient for most graphic design tasks. Best for those prioritizing mobility and cost-effectiveness.

Performance and Thermal Management

The MacBook Pro is generally recommended for its superior thermal management due to the inclusion of a fan, allowing it to sustain high-performance levels during intensive tasks [1:1], [5:5]. This makes the Pro ideal for users who engage in heavy workloads like video rendering or 3D animations, where prolonged high performance is needed [3:3]. However, the MacBook Air, especially with the M4 chip, offers impressive performance for typical graphic design tasks and can handle multiple applications simultaneously without significant slowdowns [3:1], [5:1].

Display Quality

The display quality is a major differentiator between the two models. The MacBook Pro features a higher resolution, MiniLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, providing better color accuracy and true blacks, which is crucial for graphic design work [2:1], [5:5]. The Air's display is still good but does not match the Pro's capability in terms of color fidelity and refresh rate [5:9].

Portability and Build

The MacBook Air is notably lighter and more portable than the Pro, making it a better choice for those who prioritize mobility [5:3], [5:4]. It is also less expensive, which might be appealing for students or those with budget constraints [4:1]. However, if you require additional ports such as an SD card reader or HDMI, the Pro offers these options [5:5].

Memory and Storage Considerations

Both models can be configured with up to 24GB of RAM, which is beneficial for handling large files and multitasking [3:1], [5:10]. While the Air can manage most graphic design tasks efficiently, upgrading the RAM can help future-proof your device against more demanding software updates and workflows.

Conclusion

For professional graphic designers who require the best display quality and sustained performance for intensive tasks, the MacBook Pro is the better option. However, for those who value portability and are working within a budget, the MacBook Air provides excellent performance for most graphic design needs. Consider your specific requirements, such as the importance of display quality and the nature of your workload, when making your decision.

Not a designer but with the new m1 macs there is virtually no difference in performance. There are a lot of videos about this, potentially for some video editing tasks you could see the fan actually helping, but most of the time not.

I’m a software developer and had the same predicament as you. Chose the upgraded air model and I couldn’t be happier.

EDIT: try to push it as hard as you can during the return period to make sure it’s right for you, whatever you choose.

The fact that you don’t know that a 2020 air would blow pretty much every Macbook pro from before 2020 out of the water in power makes me think you don’t understand Macbooks.

The new M1 Airs are actually pretty powerful, but Adobe hasn't updated their software to run natively on Apple silicon yet so we're not going to see the full potential of the new chips for a while.

MacBook Pro (M1) owner here!

I’ve tried pushing it as hard as I can with heaps of editing software and over a hundred chrome tabs and I’ve never heard the fans turn on.

For average graphic design, I suspect the MacBook Air (M1) will still blow most exisiting laptops out of the water (especially as more software is updated to support Apple silicon).

I’ve also seen more recent reviews coming out suggesting that the Pro indeed has better long-term performance due to many aspects of its thermal/battery/soc architecture being different (initially there was a lot of controversy about this so take it with a grain of salt).

Air vs Pro for Graphic Design?

Posted by Correct-Football-521 · in r/macbook · 2 years ago

I work professionally as a graphic design using Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. I do not do any video editing. I currently have a desktop gaming PC that has an upgraded graphics card. I need to be able to be more mobile with my work and seeing conflicting answers on if the new 15" Air is sufficient.

Here are the 2 models I'm considering between:

MacBook Air 15" - 16GB memory, 512GB SSD (8 core CPU, 10 core GPU)

MacBook Pro 14" - 16GB memory, 512GB SSD (10 core CPU, 16 core GPU)

If you’re a professional graphic designer I would say “Pro 14” just because of the superior display alone (Resolution and colour).

Macbook Pro or Air for Graphic design?

Posted by mii_voi · in r/macbook · 1 month ago

I've gone through all of the posts talking about this, but I got very mixed feedback. I am currently in my fifth semester in a Communication Design program at university. We mostly work with Adobe programs such as Indesign, Photoshop, After Effects. I've only ever used a Windows computer, so I'm not sure how the switch to Macs would be. My current windows pc is a bit slow and laggy, and I've had trouble with the color space as well. I am looking at Apple's education plan and wondering whether I should go for a M4 Macbook Pro with 16gb RAM and 1TB ssd, or instead go for a more affordable Air but with higher specs. I like how the Pro has more ports, a fan and likely better performance, but I wouldn't want it to be an overkill.

For my app usage, I run one or two Adobe programs, while using Chrome in the background. I also use Blender, but not as often. I work a lot with Photoshop, mostly drawing with it; illustration. I've scoured the internet, articles, youtube videos, reviews, and I'm still very confused. Which one would you recommend from the Air or Pro? I would appreciate the help a lot!

Get a 24gb 1tb SSD Air for cheaper than the pro. The performance is almost the exact same until you start to heat saturate it if you say render videos for 20 mins straight or render 3d animations. Even then the performance is maybe only 30% less than the pro at max heat soak.

Recommend Air for graphic design. It doesn't need fan in Pro.

Get Air with 24 GB Ram and 1 TB SSD.

I have MacBook Air M4 with 24 GB Ram and 512 GB SSD. After opened 50 tabs Chrome, Lightroom and Capture One on the same time it used 19 GB Ram. Ram used increase during intensive editing works.

Best laptop to purchase for graphic design?

Posted by applesandwitch · in r/uofu · 3 months ago

I have to get a laptop for college anyway and I’m doing graphic design. I’ve been looking into MacBook pros and it seems to have everything I need, however the air is genuinely so much cheaper. Does the air run as well as the pro with applications like photoshop ect and having a ton of files? I’ve never had any sort of mac so I’m not sure what to expect.

If you're a graphic design human, then you'll discover pretty quickly how important power is in your rig.

I would pick a MacBook Pro for that reason alone if you really needed portability, but I would be considering an M2.

Dependent_History_48 · 3 months ago

this heavily depends on ur budget. you can get an air (which is typically cheaper) and still be able to get through your college classes just fine. the only complaint i hear from graphic designers about the air is the external display support. for whatever reason that i’m not going to dive into here, the air only supports 1 external display at best. the pro has the capability to do 2 (i’ve found that the display link docking station works best for apple products and non-apple monitors - for both the air and pro).

if this were me, i’d personally lean towards the air rather than the pro. mainly just because it’s lighter, sleek, and fits in my backpack pretty snug. there really isn’t that much of a problem with the pro, and the pro does give u more capabilities (higher processor to choose, more RAM and Memory options, etc) but, as a person with a tight budget, i’m sure i’ll be able to get through work with 1 extra monitor (cheap 2nd hand, probs from surplus), an external hard drive for storage, and a docking station for more ports.

The latest 2025 M4 MacBook Air now supports 2 external displays and full native resolution of the built-in display. The built-in display resolution is lower than the MacBook Pro, but still good, especially if you connect to an external monitor(s).

I suggest getting the MacBook Air, with 24GB memory and 512GB SSD.

The new air with the M4 chip is an absolute beast. Unless you are planning on doing some seriously crazy stuff the air will be just fine. The M4 air is better than an M1 or maybe even an M2 MacBook pro.

You’ll probably need a MacBook Pro for the RAM. Double check with the campus store when their next Apple event is. Students and employees at the U don’t pay taxes on the electronics as the school pays them for you and the campus store offers different discounts. It’s one of the best Apple sales you’re going to find.

Trying to decide between Macbook M4 Air or Pro

Posted by jaiwolv · in r/macbook · 1 month ago
post image

I'm trying to get some opinions here and see if anyone perhaps could provide it before I decide.

I work as a graphic designer so the heaviest task I do would probably be working on a large conference banner/billboard or editing multiple high resolution photos at once. I'm currently using a PC with 16 GB and 12th Gen Core i3, which has never had a problem save for probably slower rendering at times with a lot of Chrome tabs open. I mostly want to have a laptop that I can do some work on reliably while I'm away (planning on going to my parents' this Christmas).

For info I had no problem with budget, but just trying to save whenever possible. Currently in my country the price difference for the 10 core 16 GB 512 GB MacBook Air VS Pro is about $500 or so. Which one should I get?

If price sincerely isn’t an issue, the MacBook Pro is a better computer. The display in particular would be a noticeable upgrade.

However, from the perspective of performance, you will not miss anything of you go with the Air. It really comes down to a better display, extra USB-C port, better speakers and an SD card reader vs. $500. If you would pay $500 for those things, get the Pro. If you don’t care, the Air is phenomenal.

Hmm I've watched several videos about the comparison and can't remember any mentioning the display & speakers. Does the M4 Pro have better displays? I've always assumed that they're only separated by the chip performance. Thank you for the insights!

1 upvotes on reddit
Some-Dog5000 · 1 month ago

The M4 MacBook Pro differs from the M4 MacBook Air in four main things:

(1) sustained performance - it's the same chip in both cases, but the MBP has a fan, so it can run intense workflows for longer;

(2) display - the Pro has a 120Hz variable refresh rate MiniLED screen, the Air only goes up to 60Hz and is an LCD, so no true blacks;

(3) speaker system; and

(4) port selection - the Pro has an SD card reader, HDMI, and an extra Thunderbolt port.

Up to you if it's worth the $300 premium over the M4 MacBook Air with the exact same specs.

If you’re carrying it around the thickness and the weight between the Air 15 and the Pro 14 is MUCH MUCH more noticeable than the larger display of the Air. I exchanged my Air for the Pro due to the display alone for $100. Portability is FAR superior on the Air, weight feels wonky on the Pro compared to the Air, IDC what anyone says… the Pro feels less “solid” than the Air when carrying it to me, that extra inch of screen real estate just seems like more than an inch to me. That being said I know the extra inch is just an extra inch so I didn’t worry about that much at all and the display being ProMotion is really what made me want to go for the Pro. I wouldn’t have ever been unhappy with the Air though because that display is GORGEOUS! Just wanted the ProMotion and I tend to buy things I don’t need over things that would be more beneficial to me… I only use my this device for everyday usage and that’s it like emails, web surfing, YT, etc. Would benefit much much more from the 15” Air than the ProMotion Pro 14” but still keeping me Pro despite the Air having FAAAAR superior portability and a more than good enough display. Speakers on the Air are also totally fine for a large majority of people as well that aren’t using it for professional purposes but even if they WEREN’T anywhere near as good if you’re using your MacBook for things regarding audio you’re using a high-end pair of headphones anyway. I’ll still be keeping my Pro though.

I think we’re forgetting one vital part. I have a 14 pro but I wish I’d got the air purely for portability. I don’t use at a desk. If you’re using it primarily as a lap laptop or work machine on the road etc. the air would be better. The pro is too heavy.

Air.

If you aren't sure that you need a MBP, then an Air is fine for you. You might need a MBP if:

  • the better color accuracy / calibration of the screen matters for your work (if you don't own an external device to color calibrate your screen, this probably doesn't matter),
  • you hate 60Hz screens with a passion and refuse to use anything with them,
  • you know you will use more than 16GB of RAM, and you can see this in memory pressure,
  • your workload involves rendering, compiling, AI work, or similar that will put a continuous thermal load on the system, which means the fans are useful,
  • your use case involves using the internal speakers on the machine, and getting external speakers or headphones isn't a better solution for you,
  • you need the extra ports/ SD card reader, and having a hub isn't for you, or
  • your work requires a Pro or Max processor.

If you don't fall into at least one of the above points, getting a Pro is just a personal preference. The Pros are a great machine, but the Air is amazing for what it does and costs less.

MacBook is a computer and iPad is a gadget that pretend to be somewhat a computer which it is not. You can't run a Terminal on iPad nor install your own software without Apple intervention. So decide what you need and act accordingly.

Macbook Pro vs Macbook Air or PC laptop for design?

I’m in college studying package design and I need a new laptop. I use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign. I know the industry standard is Macbooks but they are expensive. I’m looking at refurbished ones. Would the Air be good for the adobe programs ? I’ve always used PC’s but they crash and don’t last that long.

Edit: my budget is $700-900

Hey there! For design work, I'd actually recommend stretching your budget a bit if possible. The MacBook Air (M2 or M3) with 16GB RAM would be a solid choice for Adobe programs. At your current budget of $500-$800, you might be looking at a refurbished model, which can be hit or miss.

Pro tip: Keep an eye out for student discounts or refurbished models directly from Apple. They often come with a warranty and can be a great way to get a more powerful machine without breaking the bank. The M1/M2 Air models are still fantastic for design work and will definitely handle Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign smoothly.

If portability is key for college, the Air is perfect. But if you can save a bit more, the Pro models offer better thermal performance for longer design sessions. Just something to consider as you're planning your upgrade!

$500-$800 is really stretching it, that's basically iPad realm. MacBooks of that pricing are going to be older and soon aren't going to be able to run programs as the machine can't take newer OS updates. I also wouldn't get a PC in that range because you're going to lose hardware advantage even if you can run Windows 11.

That's a tough situation to be in.

Does it have to be a laptop/MacBook

I see posts daily asking, but personally I much prefer an actual desktop, portability tends is more a novelty and not a "must have" most of the time

PC's would come out cheaper, can get more bang for your buck, last longer, future proof to upgrade instead of having to buy outright again.

Although macs are industry standard, so you'll have to be okay with using them. There's very little difference between them now, shortcuts would be the most noticeable which you can change your keyboard setup anyway

I used to have a PC laptop then mbpro and now have an air (refurbished) and it runs adobe smoothly. Mind you, I no longer do graphic heavy work but I can run illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign simultaneously if needed on occasion. Depends what you'll be using it for but I'd still try get the highest spec you can afford. I do feel the screen is too small and appreciate a separate monitor for certain projects. (PC or Mac doesn't matter, I have both but prefer the UI on Mac).

Macbook Pro M2 or Air M2 for Graphic Designer

Posted by Ecstatic-Leopard-895 · in r/macbook · 2 years ago

Hi, so I've been overthinking about this and I'm just not sure which machine I should get between the two.

I'm a graphic designer, this machine will be my second machine, one I take with on the go. On daily basis, I uses Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, and that's about it, no video editing apps and such.

So I was wondering, which machine I should get for those tasks? In one hand the MBP is...well a PRO with some advantages over the Air, but on the other hand, it has an outdated design, a touchbar I don't think would be useful and on the Air, it's all new and beautiful...

So would the air be fine with my daily tasks I mentioned ? Or should I just go Pro?

I have the 13" M1 MBP and it is a very nice laptop. Personally I prefer the Touch Bar, once you get used to it, it is a really handy item especially in apps that have features to use it. I can't speak to the Adobe apps its been years since I used them.

I doubt that you will overly stress the M2 MBA, but the 13" MBP is still an excellent choice.

If I really needed a new computer I would go for the M1 Pro and get 16-32GB of RAM and 512-1TB if storage. That computer will do the job for years. I do not recommend any of the 13-inch MBP since it’s the old design, first generation and when it comes to the M2-model it has less power than the M1 Pro/Max.

If I did not need a new computer right now I would wait for the release of the M2 Pro/Max models.

Macbook Air M4 vs M3 Pro Macbook Pro for Graphic Design

Posted by Easy-Paint-8729 · in r/macbookair · 6 months ago

Hey, this is my first post here! I’m a full-time graphic designer. I’m looking to buy a MacBook for graphic design/UI design (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Lightroom, Figma) and to learn and use After Effects. I’m a bit confused between the M4 Air (16GB/512GB) and the MacBook Pro M3 Pro (18GB/512GB). I’m leaning towards the M4 chip because it’s the newer one, and I assume it offers better performance and efficiency. However, I’m not sure if the MacBook Air will be able to handle the software I need to run on a daily basis. It would be really helpful if you guys could suggest which one would be better for my needs. Also, I’m on a tight budget.

> Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Lightroom, Figma

A MacBook Air with Apple Silicon is perfect for this. I have an M2 MacBook Air with 24 GB RAM and its been perfect for these apps (I don't use Figma but same thing). These MacBook Airs are 2x more performant in CPU than the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pros, and people were buying those to run these apps flawlessly, so you know the M4 chip can handle these apps with ease if its 2x more powerful.

> to learn and use After Effects

After Effects is CPU heavy, is my understanding, so it benefits from as many performance cores as you can throw at it. This video with an M2 Air shows it works perfectly fine until theres a complex project then theres a bit of lag. I don't know if there is anything in settings you're supposed to do to lessen lag during playback, or maybe there was insufficient RAM in the test model they used. But also, that's an M2 Air and you're looking at a more performant M4 Air so it will obviously handle that project better (M4 is about 50% faster than M2). And you're "learning" so I don't know that you will be working on complex projects or whatever will matter.

Since you're on a tight budget—and your main money-making apps are Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Lightroom, Figma—I say the M4 Air is perfect for you.

Regarding should you instead get the M3 Pro MacBook Pro, thats a bit more complex an issue. Assuming you're looking at the entry M3 Pro MBP with 5 performance cores, when looking at Geekbench 6, its actually 18% slower in single core, and 5% slower in multi core than the M4 MacBook Air. But it does have 20% better GPU metal score—although 20% better is not night-and-day better. What the MacBook Pro has going for it is the extra ports, the internal "ProMotion" display, and the two fans for active cooling. So if you want those things, get the MBP. If you don't, get the MBA.

But worry not—both models can run your apps on a daily basis.

The regular M3 chip only has 4 performance cores so I didn't mean M3.

I also discussed it having 20% faster GPU—the regular M3 chip wouldn't have faster GPU than the latest M4 chip.

I'll edit my post to clarify M3 Pro MBP

MacBook Air M1 vs MacBook Pro 14": Which MacBook for Graphic Design?

Posted by papagrantu · in r/GraphicDesigning · 3 years ago

Hello Everyone!

I am going to buying a new MacBook for my girlfriend for Christmas but I need a bit of advice. I am not a graphic designer, but I know enough about it to help. Before anyone recommends a windows laptop, she wants to stick with the Apple ecosystem.

Here is some information on how she will be using the machine:

  • Adobe Acrobat
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Multi-Tasking different applications
  • Photo Editing
  • Potential video and animation rendering (Idk what the future holds if she will need to interact with video or animations. Again, I don't know much about graphic design)
  • Managing e-commerce business on the side

Here is what I am between:

MacBook Air M1 (2020) for $1079 (w/ Student Discount) with the following additional upgrades added on:

  • Upgrading to 16-core neural engine instead of base 8-core
  • Upgrading to 512GB SSD storage instead of base 256GB SSD storage

MacBook Pro 14" (2021) for $1849 (w/ Student Discount) with no additional upgrades

Final Thoughts:

The money is not the issue, its what is going to get her what she needs in order to do her job. Also, I want to make sure that this computer will be able to support her with the inevitable changes to technology in the coming years. I want to make sure her machine will be capable of whatever she may get into with graphic design.

Thanks in advance for all your advice! :)

IMO, if there’s any possibility of video work or rendering, the M1 Pro would be worth it.

Also, if my SO got me a fricken MacBook Pro as a gift, I’d be putting a ring on that ASAP! Ha. Hope she loves it!

Thanks but I actually just ordered the MBA with upgraded specs. After much research it fits the bill! And after 7 years of dealing with me, she deserves it. Ring comes next year!

The MacBook Air M1 will do the job for the kind of work she is doing. It'll handle video up to a point. The only limiting factor might be screen size but you can always connect an external monitor. Well done.

If it’s $1079 including the upgrades then I’d get it. The perf. difference will be minimal for her tasks. The screen difference exists, however I don’t think it’s big enough to be worth the price difference. The extra portability of the Air is also nice.

If portability is a factor go with the air, but if this will mostly be stationary the pro may be worth the extra $

If she’s doing visual work, screen real estate and image quality will matter a great deal. For that reason alone I’d suggest the 14”, or even the 16” if she’s comfortable with that form factor.

I had to make a similar decision recently. However, I am not a Graphic Designer and do usually not push my devices to their limits. I went to an Apple Store and gave both machines an extended try, really trying to focus on the advertised features and differences, especially regarding the display. To be honest, I could not spot a difference that would have been big enough to justify the much higher price. In the end, I bought the Air and after a few weeks, I couldn’t be happier with my decision. It handles everything I throw at it like a champ, battery has been amazing, portability is great, I personally prefer its design and it has no fan, which is another big advantage to me personally. In the end, for her specific use case and taken the huge price difference after discounts, I would definitely recommend you buying the Air!

MacBook Pro vs Air for graphic design

Key Considerations for Graphic Design:

  1. Performance:

    • MacBook Pro: Generally offers more powerful processors (M1 Pro/Max or M2 Pro/Max) and better graphics performance, making it ideal for demanding graphic design tasks like video editing and 3D rendering.
    • MacBook Air: While the M1 and M2 chips provide excellent performance for everyday tasks, they may struggle with intensive graphic design software under heavy workloads.
  2. Display Quality:

    • MacBook Pro: Features a Liquid Retina XDR display with higher brightness and better color accuracy, which is crucial for graphic design work.
    • MacBook Air: Has a Retina display that is still good but lacks the same level of brightness and color precision as the Pro.
  3. Thermal Management:

    • MacBook Pro: Equipped with active cooling, allowing it to maintain performance during extended heavy use without throttling.
    • MacBook Air: Uses passive cooling, which can lead to performance throttling during intensive tasks.
  4. Battery Life:

    • Both models offer excellent battery life, but the MacBook Air typically lasts longer under light usage conditions.
  5. Portability:

    • MacBook Air: Lighter and thinner, making it more portable and easier to carry around.
    • MacBook Pro: Heavier but offers more power, which may be worth it if you need the extra performance.

Recommendation: If your graphic design work involves heavy software like Adobe Creative Suite, 3D modeling, or video editing, the MacBook Pro is the better choice due to its superior performance, display quality, and thermal management. However, if your work is more casual or involves lighter applications, the MacBook Air is a great, more portable option that still offers excellent performance for most graphic design tasks.
