TL;DR
Popular Brands and Models
Several brands and models were highlighted as top choices for motorcycle LED headlights. The Fenix BC 30 v2 was praised for its brightness and rechargeable batteries [1:1]. The Cultwerk Daymaker LED headlight was noted for significantly improving night rides, although it comes with a higher price tag
[3:1]. Cognito Moto also offers quality products, though they may be more expensive
[5:2].
Dedicated LED Assemblies vs. Bulbs
Dedicated LED assemblies are often recommended over simple bulb replacements. This is because the light pattern and output can be better optimized for motorcycle use [5:1]. Users have reported that dedicated assemblies tend to last longer and offer better performance compared to replacing halogen bulbs with LED ones
[5:2].
Installation Considerations
When installing LED headlights, it's important to ensure compatibility with your bike's existing housing. Some users have experienced issues with overheating when using non-fan LEDs in sealed housings [2:2]. Additionally, it's crucial to check if the LED replacement will work well with your existing reflectors to avoid poor light patterns or blinding other drivers
[2:3].
Budget Options and Alternatives
For those on a budget, some users have found success with cheaper options from Amazon or AliExpress, though these come with varying levels of reliability [3:4]. Another alternative is to look into high-quality halogen options like Hella lights, which can still provide good performance without the potential complications of an LED conversion
[5:5].
Additional Tips
It's advisable to avoid very cheap LED lights from less reputable sources, as these may not perform well or last long [5:7]. For those living in areas with snow, consider that LED lights do not produce heat like halogens, which can be a disadvantage in snowy conditions
[4:5].
I'm looking for the best affordable bike headlight. I see alot of generic vague brands online that sell lights but I want an experience opinion on what the best model light there is out there
I recently got an exposure strada for my winter commute on unlit roads. It’s very good. Build quality is next level but it was very expensive. Hopefully worth the long term investment.
I’ve also had Moon brand lights which are great.
Saying that I also keep spare lights on the bike and get the cheapest ones I can fine on Amazon which do the job.
Wow looks like a sick light
For front lights, I tried a bunch and never found any worth having that weren't stupidly expensive. Bought a basic waterproof EDC torch for £20 and a universal mount which works great.
I had a Thrunite TC12, now a Wurkkos FC12
Of all the lights I've owned and seen as a shop mechanic, there have been 2 that lead the pack. Bontrager ion pro. Good amount of light and many modes. The best light I've ever used is Fenix BC 30 v2. Super bright. Rechargeable and replaceable batteries. So you can bring extras. I do.
I’ve lurked r/flashlight for years and I’ll support the Fenix. You can’t beat the ability to swap out li-ions.
Good resource for bike lights that don’t cost $300+:
http://flashlights.parametrek.com/index.html?brand=Fenix,Lumintop,Nextorch,Nitecore&type=bike
Yup, forget lights with built in batteries, give me 18650/21700 compatible ones. Currently just using my armytek wizard v3 with an a2s on my helmet. Wish there were 18650 rear options. Might try a red led convoy
Ion Pro! Yes 100% won’t regret it. 1300 lumens you’re basically rolling around like a car. I love mine! I work at a shop too (in case that matters🤷🏻♂️) 👍🏼
I personally love my Lezyne Mega Drive. Good settings and has a flashing mode which is one of the three lights flashing (the other two are solid), making it perfect for road commuting.
I’ve got a good Lezyne set too. 1000xl or something to that effect. That particular model is a little bigger and definitely heavier than I’d have liked, but I was on a budget. Their battery life, settings, and brightness are all I need.
I also had a Lezyne 1000xl. It was a good light for the price but with one caveat: I commute 100% by bike in the PNW and it died after about 7 months of use due to water damage. As far as I can tell by searching on the Lezyne website none of their lights carry a water resistance rating on the IP scale. Might be something to consider if you’re planning on riding in the wet consistently. I will say though, the Lezyne Strip Pro rear light that I got at the same time is still going strong after 2 years of rainy commuting and has excellent settings and battery life. It being protected by the saddle/fender has certainly helped with it’s light longevity.
Heck no, Lezyne is shit quality, I hate that everybody thinks it's good, I have thrown away 3 pumps, 2 multitools and a 2 lights! I buy Topeak for tools and Magicshine for lights!
I've had a front Cateye 300 for 10yrs, it's lasted a MTB, a hybrid, a road bike and two gravels. It's the light I use for winter riding/commuting so used nearly every work day for all that time. Still going strong, no battery depletion. Built like a tank.
Are leds plug and play? Some leds have fans on them and my bikes headlight assembly is sealed tight. Are leds possible? I have yellow hallogens and looking for something brighter and higher in lumens.
Any answers are appriciated🙏
Just my experience, I put non-fan LED's in my bike and they would only work for 5-10 minutes until they overheated. I put a set with fans in and left the covers off and they work like a charm. Not sure for how long in a really rainy area but so far so good.
Also keep in mind that you should also check if your replacement LED bulb will play nicely with your existing housing reflectors etc. You don’t want to be stuck with a bad light pattern or constantly blinding everyone.
If the bulb is specifically designed for your housing / bike then it should be fine or if you replace the entire unit but otherwise you can get some disappointing results, and potentially end up failing your next road worthiness inspection.
I looked into this for one of my former bikes and ended up giving up on it as feedback from others who had done it had found issues without getting a whole new light unit which was more than I wanted to spend. Having said all that things may have improved a lot since then and I do recall seeing some that claimed to perfectly emulate the light output of a traditional bulb so maybe they are actually better at that now than in the past :).
It’s a pain in the ass to install those on cars. With the additional space constraints on bikes it’s a ducking nightmare.
Even with a ballasted HID I’ve always had to modify the cap behind the OEM bulb to fit everything, and in the end it wasn’t worth it on the 2 bikes it did it on. Now I just get better bulbs for the OEM lights, and add external LEDs. Superbrightleds.com sells cheap and quality light bars and pods and stuff.
Thank you for your answer🙏🙏. I don't know how I feel about putting external lights on a sportbike. An adventure bike will make it look meaner tho🤣
Bulbs yes. Entire housings? It's always been easy... adding a relay and upgraded wiring harness on cars does it. Would the same not work on bikes?
The increased size of the light apparatus is an issue for moto headlight housings that have clearance issues for that added rearward length, so you have to modify the housing and weather proof it. 5 years ago these LEDs failed often enough it wasn’t worth it with the bike disassembling involved to replace it. Maybe they are better now but I’ll still go with good halogen and aux led lights
You will need new housing. The light isn't dispersed properly. You're better off with getting a high quality OSRAM bulb.
LED conversion is a good way to blow a lot of money for something that may not even work as well as what is being replaced:
https://jalopnik.com/why-most-led-headlight-upgrades-dont-really-work-an-ex-1843070472
It depends on the type of the bike, right? My classic style round housing has no mirrors in it so a conversion should be safe without blinding others?
Tired of the bad housing, no light bulbs work well or work for long (designed for non-LEDs).
What's the best light? Best budget light? Not worth buying budget? Things to watch out for?
US 2015 Night Rod Special if it matters.
I have a copy of the daymaker and are verry pleased with it. I though have a cheaper LED knock off but it lights the road up like a mf!
It was a hastle to switch out the headlight. Burned a fuse before i understood that i had to connect the wires wrong to make it work.
I have the Zeel Design dual halogen projector light. Gives the bike a completely modern look and the light is amazing. Night riding has never looked so good.
Do you have a photo of your bike? I'm having a hard time imagining that looking good
Any link? How did you have to wire it wrong?
I modded mine with a 2018 fat bob led headlight and it made a huge difference. Really took away from the Porsche look though. If you want to retain the look, but get better lighting I recommend just buying some Hikari LED bulbs from Amazon. You'd be amazed how much more light you can get out of your stock housing by just upgrading the bulb.
I have led bulbs in it now, but they aren't 360 light, so it looks super splotchy. Not a huge fan.
I bought a Cultwerk Daymaker LED headlight. Absolute game changer regarding night rides. Had a halogen headlight before, which sucked. Cultwerk is based in Germany though so shipping costs might be steep. I live in the Netherlands, so for me the shipping costs were doable. Price of the headlight was also quite high (around $200). There are a lot of cheap LED headlights for sale via AliExpress though, I've heard some good experiences from those from multiple V-Rod riders. Might be an option if you're looking for a less expensive fix.
Thanks for your feedback!
I’m tired of these crusty headlights who’s making quality headlights? Everything I see online there’s complaints abt moisture and not lasting too long, what’s worked for you? Pls help me out
CAPA certified headlights. Mine have held up great.
The main killer of all headlights is the intense heat output from halogen bulbs. I went through two sets fading and peeling within a year before I decided it was time for LEDs. Of course, you shouldn’t put LEDs bulbs in the stock housings so I went with the LED protector headlights from Z-off-road. Very pleased with the quality on these.
I have these lights as well. Very bright and look amazing. Seem like pretty good quality and the price does reflect that
Y’all don’t get snow/ice? LED lights suck in my neck of the woods. No heat to melt the snow off in a snowstorm. I’ll stick to the heat producing halogens.
We get snow maybe one day out of the year here in North Georgia lol. Not at all a concern
OEM headlights are almost always the way to go. So if yours are original, just restore them.
Sand them down removing all the old surface damage, step up the grits to a polishable level, and re-clear.
I've had good luck with TYC brand
I got the cheapest ones on Amazon and they’re fine two years later 🤷♂️
Can anyone recommend good headlights for motorcycles. The stock headlights on RE continental GT sucks and ive heard that the led headlights don't last long. Recommendations n Help is appreciated. Thanks
Cognito moto makes good stuff, not sure if they’ll have something to work on a RE. You’ll pay for it though.
LED lasts significantly longer than halogen, assuming it’s the same build and component quality.
I run a lsl 7" from them, super bright
Don’t order those cool led lites from WISH is all I’m sayin. ♂️ cheap ass garbage
Yea that's wat. my stock headlights suck but heard the Led ones break down fast.
>RE continental GT
My LED housing has been in place for 3 years, but it doesn't see heavy useage.
Hella lights are a solid alternative if you want to stick with halogens.
Thanks for the replies guys. So seems led is better from the assessment
dedicated LED assemblies will be better than bulbs.
have you seen these:
I have something similiar from Amazon, but I try not to order from them anymore.
PO of my bike put on these stupid little generic minimalist dinky turn signals that are barely noticeable at night, let alone during the day. I'm looking for something that's just as good if not even brighter than stock, but hopefully isn't unreasonably large (So as to still fit in with the svelte lines of my bike).
Does anyone have any actual, in-person experience or recommendations? I've seen plenty of the generics at Cycle Gear and similar that are all over amazon, but I have serious doubts about their effectiveness during the daytime.
I bought CNC Racing "Flow" turn signals on my MV. They are really bright and work well. I you're changing from bulbs to LEDs, you'll need resistors or a turn signal flasher relay. I bought some resistors from Amazon for like $10-12 and they work fine. Do some research to make sure you get the right amount of resistance, not too high or too low.
The CNCs are expensive but they're only about 1/2 of the cost of Rizomas. I don't think the Rizomas are really any better.
Thanks for the advice. The PO of the bike had already put LED turn signals on, but they're so comically tiny and weak that they are completely useless during the day and I've had to resort to hand signals.
At least somebody in modern times still knows how to use hand signals!
I replaced the non-LED signals on my 390 Duke with sequential ones from LEDPerf and they're definitely good and visible in the daytime.
Are they still holding up well? They look nice and are priced well.
Yeah they’re still running great! It’s my wife’s bike now but have been riding it a bit lately and they still look much nicer than the stock signals.
https://tstindustries.com/tst-bl6-led-pod-turn-signals.html this is what I'm running on my drz in the front. The back is currently just the integrated lights on the tail tidy but will soon be complemented by a set of skene p3 lights with the turn signal function and the decelerometor. https://www.cyclopsadventuresports.com/Skene-P3-TailBrake-Lighting-System-_p_161.html
Rizoma are good and bright.
motogadget are bright as shit
I second this! They list them as "show only" but the bar end signals are freakin bright! I put the little bullet lights on the back that are super small but also damn bright.
Lasfit is the only brand i buy. Their led headlight kits arent bad priced and they last. Ive only had one issue in the 10 years ive been running their stuff. And the company expedited me a replacement set for my silverado.
Unfortunately, Headlight Revolution isn't biased at all. They either own the company of the headlights they say are the best (which is the case in a lot of the videos) or they are sponsored by the company that they choose to mention and promote. Which is also the case in a lot of the videos they post.
Try cleaning your headlights first.
And please don’t blind people by using LEDs in a halogen reflector.
You sure?
They’re about $100 for each side: https://www.headlightsdepot.com/black-trim-headlight-passenger-right-assembly-fits-2009-2014-honda-fit-sku-hd564-b101r.html
Just don't. Most LEDs are not DOT approved which means they're not for road use. And if your just sticking them straight into a halogen housing you'll be blinding everyone coming towards you.
These are the ones I use. Ozram night breakers 200% brighter than the standard bulbs and have a nice white hue on the highbeams. They're far safer than LEDs and aren't far off for brightness. Please for the sake of everyone else on the road. DON'T USE LEDS.
You can adjust the height of the headlight beam from the back of the lamp housing with a screw driver, clockwise is typically up and counter clockwise is typically down. That way you don't blind people and you can set up how far down the road you want to see. It's easy 👍 and LEDs are great to have if you have a long highway commute and dont want to hit a deer
There are LED's that are designed to mimick the beam pattern of Halogens in a halogen reflector housing. They are not cheap though. Anywhere between $150 - $220 per set. If adjusted properly, you would not be blinding everyone the way that cheap LED's from Amazon that throw light in every direction would be blinding everyone. They can still be seen as 'blinding' in the way that projectors are, because they are still so bright by default, but if you adjust them properly yourself or at a shop, they can be made to work without burning everyone's retinas out of their skull.
What I did was, I bought a pair for my low beams that are not as bright - ~1700 lumens - and then bought a pair for my high beams that are much brighter - ~3600 lumens - and doing it this way seems to work pretty well. Have had a couple friends tell me they're still pretty bright, but not moreso than people who have projectors.
I am aware they are not road legal, but I have yet to be pulled over for them after two years of using them. I'm gonna run them until I'm either legally forced to get rid of them, or until they stop working over time, because they were not cheap and I'm gonna get my money out of them lol. But, when I do replace them, I'll probably try these Night Breakers out since they're a lot cheaper but still pretty bright.
This article says that LED are the new standard in new cars but the lumens must be below 3,000
Don’t listen to ppl who are like 10 yrs out of date with their info on LEDs, there are options out there that create a good beam pattern in reflectors and the swap can be done without blinding ppl, even though it’s trickier than if you have projector headlights, you need good bulbs and to make sure they are aligned well. Look up Sergiu Gabor on YouTube and watch some of his LED test videos, they are well made and honest/not sponsored. Bulbfacts is another good YouTube channel that has good test/comparison videos. Also, it’s a lot more work and more expensive than just swapping the bulbs, but if you haven’t heard of it you can swap a projector lens into your stock housing which is what that other person probably means when they said “replace the entire lenses enclosure”.
Absolutely not. LED bulbs are not legal in the US as headlights.
To his point all LED bulbs I've seen have said "for off-road use only", meaning not DOT approved. There's a reason why manufacturers have to design their lamps the way they do. Tampering with that creates an unsafe situation, usually blinding oncoming drivers.
Unless it's an LED headlight that's been engineered for DOT approval there's no need for running LED's. I've worked third shift for over 10 years and I've never had a need for a brighter light.
I really like Auxbeam LEDs
I have a 16 colorado and im gonna be looking for led headlights in the next couple of weeks any suggestions also pistol and rifle mounting suggestions would be cool
I have Fahren termitor led bulbs off of amazon in my low/high beams. They were super easy to install and they work great. They are incredibly bright, huge upgrade over the stock ones
I can vouch for these too. Can't speak for longevity as of yet but function wise they are as good as the Lasfits and they have a near identical beam pattern with minimal side glare as they positioned the chips in the same way as the Lasfits.
Lasfit are pretty awesome
After posting i went looking around and that seems to be the go to for most. I ordered the low and high beam set for it
I have their light bar, spot, ditch lights and control box as well. They work great, kinda like mounting the sun on your truck.
Lasfit I've been really happy
Seems like the go to so I ordered them
Lasfit, thats what ive got and i have no complaints
Bought Hikari Future Titanovas off amazon for my 2019 and been very impressed. Your 2016 has reflector headlight beams not projectors tho, correct? It might not be as good for reflectors I dunno.
I've upgraded my bikes headlights and it looks so much better and illuminates even more at night. Love the new look with it on.
The power that feeds my headlight, and tailight is unrectified. So I cant just change them to LED without changing my stator/rectifier. So I'm sticking with my incandescent for now.
It looks alright. I prefer the look of the original. But if it provides more light, then its a good upgrade.
Check if there's any oem options on your bike, Rieju makes oem led housing like the one on the pictures. Work great at night.
Theres basically two kinds of kits. The kind that does the rectification internally. Or the kind that has to have all the power reran back to the battery. Either way, it costs about as much as it does to just get a new stator and rectifier. So if I really cared, thats the route I'd go. Then I could use any LED I like.
best led headlights for motorcycles
Key Considerations for Choosing LED Headlights for Motorcycles
Brightness (Lumens): Look for headlights with a high lumen output (typically 2000-4000 lumens) for better visibility at night and in adverse weather conditions.
Color Temperature: A color temperature of 5000K to 6000K is ideal, as it provides a bright white light that closely resembles daylight, improving visibility and reducing eye strain.
Beam Pattern: Ensure the LED headlights have a good beam pattern (both high and low beams) to illuminate the road effectively without blinding oncoming traffic.
Durability: Choose headlights that are waterproof and shock-resistant to withstand various weather conditions and the vibrations of riding.
Compatibility: Make sure the LED headlights are compatible with your motorcycle's make and model. Some may require additional adapters or modifications.
Heat Dissipation: Look for models with built-in cooling systems (like fans or heat sinks) to prevent overheating and prolong the lifespan of the LEDs.
Recommendations:
Hikari Ultra LED Headlight Bulbs: Known for their high brightness (up to 4000 lumens) and excellent beam pattern, these bulbs are a popular choice among riders.
Fahren H4/9003 LED Headlight Bulbs: These offer a great balance of performance and price, with a color temperature of 6500K and a good beam pattern.
Cyclops Adventure Sports LED Headlight: Specifically designed for motorcycles, this headlight provides a powerful output and is built to withstand tough conditions.
When selecting LED headlights, consider your riding conditions and preferences to ensure you choose the best option for your needs.
