TL;DR
Modular Buildings
Modular buildings are frequently recommended for collectors due to their cohesive design and ability to connect into a larger cityscape. Sets like the Police Station [2:3], Boutique Hotel, and Assembly Square
[1:4] are popular choices. These sets not only look impressive when displayed together but also tend to appreciate in value after retirement
[3:1].
Diorama Style Sets
The new diorama-style sets have gained popularity for their intricate designs and display appeal. The Star Wars anniversary scene sets are particularly noted for their quality [5]. These sets offer a unique way to showcase favorite scenes from movies or other themes, providing both aesthetic and nostalgic value.
Retired and Collectible Sets
Retired sets can be valuable additions to a collection, as they often increase in price over time. For instance, the Lion Knights Castle is highly sought after by collectors [1]. It's advisable to purchase sets that are about to retire to avoid paying inflated prices later
[4:2].
Theme-Based Collections
For collectors with specific interests, theme-based collections can be rewarding. Harry Potter fans, for example, may enjoy sets like Diagon Alley and Hogwarts Castle [4:6]. These sets often include Easter eggs and detailed elements that enhance their appeal
[4:1].
Vehicle Sets
Vehicle sets, such as the Chevrolet Camaro Z28 and Speed Champions, are favored for their standalone display potential [2]. Larger creator expert vehicles and movie-themed cars like the Ecto-1 are also recommended for their intricate build and display quality
[2:5].
In conclusion, the best LEGO sets for collectors depend on personal interests, display preferences, and investment goals. Whether opting for modular buildings, dioramas, or theme-based collections, there are numerous options available to suit various tastes and budgets.
I have built and have the following lego collections so far and I loved building each one of them:
I am dying to have Lion Knights Castle and was planning to buy it but before I do I want to have some suggestions if there is any other valuable Lego collectible that can I buy with that money or should I go with the castle? Please advise.
The term “best” is completely subjective based on your own interest (also if you value qualities like “playability”) - for example personally I only buy “display” sets with a focus on pop culture stuff that resonates with me (like the BTTF Time Machine build I just posted or the Ghostbusters Ecto-1). Another couple ones I have in my backlog to build include the Saturn V rocket and the Home Alone house. And all these sets should increase in value post retirement.
I just started and at this point I have the boutique hotel and the assembly square. I want to make a module city as well eventually :) Does the home alone house fit in the same style? I haven't seen pictures of the house yet in a city..
Significantly bigger, especially width wise, however I did find a mod that turns the build to modular sized while retaining almost all the play features and that is what I plan on building (and why I brought the set in the first place). I’ll post the results after I get it built (maybe in the next couple weeks?)
Wow nice! those are both great sets to have!
The website has the full list and you can shop by price. Go ahead and take a look to see what catches your eye.
So many options lol going crazy also thinking about the value of the set after a couple of years so…
Titanic!!!!!
All i have is the Chevrolet Camaro Z28 and a bunch of speed champions so far, managed to get a sealed harley davison on ebay for a reasonable price and will be buying the blue mustang, i’m not really a fan of movie sets apart from that stranger things set i’ve missed out on and maybe the t. rex breakout.
What else to you recommend?
Your question is a little vague. What lego themes are you most into, and what is your budget limit? That would greatly help narrow it down.
thanks for the help urm limit is probably around the 100-200 rage and multiple sets are possible due to hoping to get a nice set once a month or so, at the moment all i’ve got is cars so maybe that or just cool looking ones in general, have to say i’m not really a fan of technic though as i like the original lego look
I recommend the lego creator T Rex set. It's been available for years and it looks good for a cheap set.
I like the blacksmith, it’s a really pretty set, it’s in your price range, and it’s going away at the end of this year so now is a great time to buy it.
If you like modular sets, I'd get the Police Station. It's on the "Last chance to buy" list as it's retiring really soon, and modulars get really expensive once they retire.
If you like car build the ecto-1 is great
I've never bought or built a Lego set before. But me and my girlfriend want to get into building and collecting
We would like to get into a current line or set that looks really good when displayed together.
So for example, we both really like Jurassic park. But a lot of those sets have an isolated look. And wouldn't really have that cool of a flow when put together
So I'm wondering, what line do you think looks the best when displayed with each other?
We are looking for a current or relatively current line. So stuff we can buy for retail price either online or at the store. Or at least pretty close to retail price
Our theoretical go to would be medieval stuff. Like castles, knights, and fantasy related stuff. But it doesn't seem like Lego offers a wide variety of that genre these days.
But we are open to anything. We like pretty much all genres and lines in theory. Anything from marvel, to dc, to cities, to space etc
Buy sets you like. Build MOCs and scenery to link them together. Profit.
Give up on a perfect display idea unless you build your own. Just allow it to be cool things you like and don't worry too hard - it's Lego, you can always change it.
If price and space aren’t limited, the modular city sets are the gold standard. Stuff like the Natural History Museum, Jazz Club, even Avengers Tower are designed to link together for a cohesive city street.
For castle stuff, Lion Knight’s Castle and Medieval Town Square don’t directly link, but share a lot of design elements so they look nice together.
The ninjago city sets
The new Lego Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle set 76435 is a modular, and will likely have a dozen sets that all combine into a large castle. It’s their third iteration of this framework - so far it looks pretty good!
Fourth if you count the early 2000s sets
Third if your counting from 2018 when the theme was rebooted but yes they have done similar things before it was paused.
If I didn't already have the original giant Hogwarts I'd start collecting these. But I'm already out of space and need to stop buying so many sets.
The obvious answer is the modular town buildings, because they are designed to all clip together and make a street.
Vehicles will always look good displayed together, as each is complete and self contained. I like the larger creator expert vehicles, but the speed champions are also great.
There is a new line of 25th anniversary Lego star wars stuff too that are all mini dioramas where the bases are all in a matching style.
What is everyone’s favorite set??? I really enjoyed building the castle so I am beginning my hunt for sets, both retired and new!
Welcome to the addiction. Be careful, you can get into a hell of a backlog really fast.
First tip, determine where and how you will display the sets you collect. Nothing worse than determining you have a perfect spot only to learn later that it's not the right size or that particular display stand is no longer in production, etc. Also, don't display in front of windows unless they have UV protection in/on them.
2nd tip, buy the sets that are about to retire from LEGO, before they retire. HP doesn't jump a ton in price after retirement, but they will be more expensive, especially the further from retired they become.
3rd tip, check out bricklink.com for all your lego needs. The site is clunky and not very user fri3ndly, but you can score some deals there for sure. Especially if you're looking for a certain figure, and not the whole settled came in.
4th tip, be patient in buying retired sets too. If you're patient. You can often find a better price from another seller, or you can find a lot with more than one set in it for example, I got pretty much the full 2018 wave, with boxes, for $150. They are used and need dusting and rebuilding. But the price is so good I couldn't pass it up. I have all these sets already, but having spare parts is never a bad thing.
5th tip, Check out rebrickable.com for alternative building directions. Lots of people design instructions for a wide variety of builds and you can buy the instructions from th3m to utilize your own parts for building. I know you said you just got into LEGO, so your misc parts won't be much, but you can see some of the build designs that you may want to do later on, and then search out the sets that go into that build.
6th tip, have way to much fun. Watch the films while you build. Take your time with each bag. Make little scenes in each build too. Dont be scared to make it your own style too. Move parts around. Switch figures with other sections. Etc.
Okay WOW! Thank you so much for all the tips! This is super helpful and so kind of you! I will definitely check out bricklink and rebrickable, they sound like really good resources. I have also been watching some videos and didn’t realise there was so much more to the LEGO world and community than I thought.
I have been looking on FB marketplace place for some retired sets so will make sure to be patient and really look for the best deals that I can find. I think a few of the HP sets will be retiring at the end of this year so I will definitely try to pick them up soon hopefully during some sales.
At the moment I don’t have a set area where I can display more than say 1-2 sets so I am thinking to do some rearranging and set up a proper place where I will have empty space ready for new sets. That way, like you said, I know what I can actually fit in the space I have, rather than find out later that it doesn’t fit properly.
I found out about there being certain versions of mini figures exclusive to certain sets, which I just had never really thought about before. So I am super interested in that aspect as well and keen to start looking out for those too on bricklink.
Also I will be sure to have fun with it! I already added a few of the extra pieces that I had left to different places on my castle. I just wanted to keep adding to it and had lots of ideas, so I am actually really keen to later start trying out some new creations!
Feeling very excited, and already loving the LEGO community!!!
Hahaha, “welcome to the addiction”, yes, it really freaking IS. 🤣❤️🔥 Love your comment! Good recommendations, saying as someone who’s really into HP LEGO for years now 🤗🎉
Fun fact about your first set, it’s the most complete Hogwarts in LEGO form we’ve gotten so far.
Welcome! I really enjoyed building the Diagon Alley set. And this Micro scale of Hogwarts too.
One of us!
This set surprised me. I had the large collectors castle but it was so big. Still a fun build. I got this as a present and ended up selling my larger set. I think this looks so nice and so many Easter eggs and looks great. And displays easier!
I am looking to get the micro diagon alley soon as well. The large Diagon Alley set is also amazing.
The new Burrow is a great set! I had the previous one and the new one clears for me.
I am really loving the diorama style legos they’ve been releasing, it almost topples my love for the botanical collection. The Star Wars anniversary scene sets are top tier as well
I would just like to see a few minifigures in the beautiful gardens. I really like the sets and hope there will be many more.
I just wanted to see y'all's opinion:)))
Hey thank you all for responding!!! I concur that it's ultimately just what I decide, so I'll let you know my pre-picked answer once the voting is up...... Feel free to just guess what you think I'd choose..... Hints are offered if requested
Hint 1: (( My favorite Lego set ever is definitely The Black Seas Barracuda and The Imperial Skipper(?) And all the Lego sets with tons of animals or magic))
You should collect the ones you like.. Not whats most popular on reddit.
I concur!!! I was just wondering what the general population thought
I have so many Legos my basement at my parent's house is full of three different people's Legos (my dad, my sister, and mine) let's just say the dichotomy of 80:s and 90s Lego pirates and knights and forest men versus all the Lego elves and friends and star wars and Harry Potter is quite funny
The three collections are all so loved and type A organized (my dad's less so bc he was a kid and organized everything very strangely)
My Dad and I both keep our cool boxes or the really big set boxes bc for some reason my dad did so little ole me did too 😂😂 I had a big closet I guess 😂🤷♀️
Hi all,
I’ve been a long time ninjago fan, ever since the pilot. I took a “brief” break right after the tournament of elements season. I would watch those seasons periodically up until 2023 where I then put in the time to watch everything from possession to crystallized.
I am waiting to jump into dragons until this season has finished. With all that being said, I am still an avid collector of Lego figures and wanted your input regarding which sets I should buy that would have characters that would one day become desired figures, like possessed Lloyd or NRG Jay. Not necessarily value wise but figures which may be sought after as I have a collection of rare figures and would like to continue to grow it. Would anyone have recommendations for sets?
Thank you!
Currently, sets with the Forbidden Five (except Drix and Nokt) are your best bet. With one exception, I think the cheapest way to get any of the other Five is a $75 set. Kur is exclusive to a $110 set right now, Rox an overpriced and hayed $75 set, and Zarkt is in a $40 set, but nothing else he comes in is cheap. Besides this, any Tournament Temple City and Temple Bounty exclusives are worth a lot, as any big set exclusives tend to be.
Awesome thank you for the input!!
I was thinking of the set that morro comes in just cause I know he’s popular and I still haven’t gotten my hands on him lol.
I greatly appreciate this!
I got a Morro figure from a ninjago magazine for 10 dollars at a grocery store. It was a couple months ago, so you cant get the magazines in store anymore, but there is probebly a way to buy it online for pretty cheap
Getting back into LEGO years later & I can’t get enough of these architecture sets. They’re so great to display and I love the idea of collecting all the cityscapes & landmarks. Would love to see others’ collections.
Sounds like it’s time for the Eiffel Tower
Bank account will kill me but one day I’ll pull the trigger on it!
Just curious! :)
Alien Conquest's Earth Defense HQ will never be dethroned.
Medieval Market Village, Parisian Restaurant and the first VW camper are all tops, but the Earth Defense HQ is my all-time favorite. Solid set for play or display, including an excellent Vic Viper. To me it's like the point where Classic Space met modern design in one of the most substantial $100 sets ever.
I really enjoyed building the new Land Rover defender set
One of our sons favorite sets. The gearbox is insane. He's currently rebuilding it for the umpteenth time. And he found a few free different builds for it. Worth every penny.
The set is impressive, the car however…
The small tumbler, speed champions jesko, Tron light cycles, and the DC CMF series.
Scooby doo mystery machine
the medieval blacksmith is my favorite current set they’ve put out, otherwise the original death star
Recently got back in collecting Lego but I want some to display in my room, what are good display sets new/used doesn’t need to include minifigs
Inquisitor shuttle is a fantastic build, the downside is at a glance it’s just a black slab, but when you actually look at it properly it is a really great set
Thanks, it’s a really nice build, but yeah it does look like a black slab 😅
The starship collection or dioramas are great for display. I mean you can display any of the sets I just find playsets usually have interiors and extras that you don’t display. That being said I have a room full of playsets on display. lol. If you have space UCS sets are awesome displays.
What are UCS sets you’d recommend?
I mean that becomes personal preference. If you have money to burn you can’t beat the Falcon. But there’s nothing wrong with the X-Wing or Tie.
Jangos Slave 1! Best build I’ve done so far and fits perfect if you get kenobis star fighter which is only $25 bucks
Thanks, Jango version of the ship is definitely one of my favorite ships in Star Wars
I have a tie fighter, interceptor, and bomber. As well as the Executor and the Invisible Hand on their display stands. The Mandalorian’s N1 starfighter is making an appearance in the background.
I have others scattered around like the Tantive IV, Ashoka’s Jedi Shuttle, an Arc fighter, a Fang Fighter, and more
That’s awesome man I can’t lie a bit jealous right now
Hey man, any tips on trying to tie those o from the wall like you did? I just bought the tie bomber and want to do the same!
I used fishing line and eye hooks. Be prepared to find the center of balance, it may look stupid at first
