TL;DR
Lotus Elise
The Lotus Elise is frequently mentioned as a favorite among enthusiasts. It is renowned for its lightweight design and thrilling driving experience. Many users appreciate the S1 for its historical significance in saving Lotus, but the S2 is often preferred for its looks [2:1]. The Elise is also compared favorably to other sports cars like the Porsche Cayman, emphasizing its unique driving dynamics
[1:2].
Lotus Esprit
The Esprit holds a special place in the hearts of many Lotus fans, with its distinctive wedge shape and pop-up headlights reminiscent of the Lamborghini Diablo [2:3]
[4:7]. The S4 and V8 versions are particularly admired for their aesthetics and performance
[2:5], and it has been featured in popular culture, notably in "The Spy Who Loved Me"
[4:4].
Lotus Evija
The Evija is celebrated for its exotic appeal and cutting-edge technology. As an all-electric hypercar, it represents a bold step into the future for Lotus, combining high performance with sustainability [2]. Its design and innovation make it a standout choice for those interested in the latest automotive advancements.
Lotus Emira
The Emira is widely regarded as one of the best-looking modern sports cars, drawing inspiration from the Elise's proportions while offering a more refined package [4:2]. It's seen as a homage to classic Lotus design, yet it incorporates contemporary styling cues that appeal to a broad audience
[5].
Lotus Carlton
Though not a traditional sports car, the Lotus Carlton is remembered for its impressive performance and unique status as a high-power sedan. It was the fastest production sedan for a decade, showcasing Lotus's ability to push boundaries even outside the typical sports car segment [3:4].
Hey this is something I can answer!
I’ve spent entire weekends swapping back and forth between each of these cars and a Lotus.
Here’s what I mean:
981 Cayman vs. Elise on Maine coast https://i.imgur.com/biohPm8.jpg
ND Miata vs. Elise on Tail of the Dragon https://i.imgur.com/icUbYOZ.jpg
Alfa 4C vs. Elise to Mt. Palomar (SoCal hills) https://i.imgur.com/JgKe987.jpg
I haven’t driven the Alpine.
My take:
Cayman isn’t a competitor. It’s too heavy, and not nearly as thrilling. You have to get up into the GTS to start rivaling the Elise on an emotional level and at that point you’re double the price. With that said if you need a daily driver, this is the most comfortable and practical. Advantage: Lotus
Alfa 4C is a bit of a mess. Personally, I hated it. The engine resonance was not pleasant in the cabin, I drove around with a constant headache and I mean that literally. The automatic transmission (which is the only one available) never knew what gear it wanted to be in around town, and felt like a dog pulling on its leash the whole time. In the hills I was expecting it to come alive but it was pretty ho-hum. The Elise was much more emotional, much more mechanical, and more raw. Also the car only had 1700 miles on it and it was literally falling apart. Paint overspray flaking off, trim bits falling off when the door is slammed, must be a nightmare long term. Advantage: Lotus
ND Miata is very charming. That car has a fantastic gearbox and it’s very predictable. It has a retro feel behind the wheel, like a spiritual successor to the Elan (which of course it is, but this ND especially has that feel). It’s not as emotional and not nearly as special (at rest stops onlookers swam the Lotus and the Miata might as well be a beige Camry, nobody cares). On the dragon though, both cars brought big smiles but only one had a warranty and for less money. Advantage: Lotus, but only just.
So, clearly the answer to this question is...
A Caterham. https://i.imgur.com/zE06hIw.jpg
(Honestly though after driving all of these I bought the MX-5).
I had a Miata and loved it, but it’s not quite a Lotus.
Gordon Murray said the Alpine is the best car of the last 20 years, so probably the Alpine.
I just wish the Alpine had a manual and even more importantly was on sale in America.
I think EV’s could lead to a small sports car resurgence in the coming years and I suspect Lotus will take the lessons from their hyper car excursion and apply those.
Here’s my hope.
I want an EV with lotus ethos, badly. Many will point out EVs are heavy and Lotus adopting them is some sort of sacrilege but to them I say:
BMW i3.
BMW was very clever with the i3. They used new materials (carbon fiber composites, hemp, glued plastics, etc) and as a result the i3 weighs the same as a Cayman. Not bad!
The i3 has a massive windshield, a rear hatch made almost entirely of glass, 4 rear side windows, a rear seat and a long roof. Lotus needs none of that, so throw it all in the bin.
I bet 800lbs can be shed off that i3 in a small roadster form factor. That would make it the same weight as an ND Miata. Slightly newer battery tech and swapping the weight of a range extender for a few extra cells it might actually get decent range.
It’s just going to take someone who cares, and if that’s not Lotus I don’t know who it is.
I love the way you think.
I drove an i3 once and it was crazy impressive. Plus I love it’s construction and materials.
I think once solid state batteries prove themselves the EV weight penalty won’t be nearly as bad and the range will be better.
I want to see some EV sports cars like an Elise and a Miata and a good EV hot hatch, like an electric GTI equivalent.
That’s what I am hoping to get in a few years for my next car. I’ve had a Miata and a GTI, but a Lotus is my dream car and I hope they can pull it off. A new Elise/Exige EV platform could be amazing.
All very good cars. MX5 is great for cost, Alpine and 4C are its most natural rivals although I'm 95% sure both can only be had in auto.
Cayman or Boxster is probably a great car, but the popularity of Porsches would always be a negative for me when deciding on a special weekend car.
I've driven the 4C and underwhelming doesn't even begin to cover it. They compromised the race car feel to try to give it luxury, but it's still just as uncomfortable and impractical as the Elise, but without any of the flawless driving feedback.
I’m 100% with you, but that carbon tub is so damn pretty.
And atrocious build quality. I had one for a weekend that was almost new a d paint was flaking off, mirror trim piece fell off, rear hatch wouldn’t close correctly, yikes.
I was bored in the hills, which is all that counts.
I get that, I drive a Genesis Coupe and it’s cool not seeing that many of them vs Mustangs. The Boxsters are popular for very good reasons tho...
Yeah I agree, they probably are very good cars. It's just personal preference that I'd get something a bit more rare as a weekend car.
If I was getting a daily it would be the porsche or mx5 out of that list.
The Alpine. If only it came with a manual transmission... And was available in the States.
Miata + $10k
I like the Evija (because I like exotic cars) but I also like the exige
For me it would have to the Esprit that’s the car that made me a lotus fan.
I love the esprit bc it looks like the Lamborghini Diablo and that’s my dream Lamborghini
Yeah the design is definitely a product of the time it was built with the wedge shape and the pop up headlights but that’s one of the things I like about it. An interesting comparison between the Esprit and the Diablo. The Esprit S1’s look similar to the Countach with their sharper angles and the later Esprits look more like the Diablo keeping the general wedge design but rounding off some of the edges.
My opinion may be unpopular, but I absolutely adore the proportions and looks of the S4 Esprit. I'd love an Esprit V8 someday.
That’s my favourite esprit as well bc it looks like a Lamborghini Diablo and that’s a dream car of mine
Shhhhhh. Don’t get a V8…. Don’t tell them I said that.
Had a great touch and see event with a Europa in my teen years. 57 now. Just purchased my 70 S2. First love. Everlasting love. Chalk up one vote for the Europa.
Just bought a basket case TC last year. Haven't touched it due to moving, but looking into it here shortly! Congrats on the S2!
New Year, new project. I hope the weather allows you to get in the garage soon. Not enough sweaters in my closet to do so here. Enjoy and share your progress.
Evora gt
Elise for me. The S1 in theory because it saved Lotus but I much prefer the looks of the S2 so that's what I bought. Saying that, the S1 looks have grown on me a lot in the past couple of years.
Was recently thinking about just how cool this thing is. The twin turbo v6, rwd, manual setup has always been one of my favorites, and to think it had more power than the M3s and 911s of the time is also awesome. The best product that ever came out of General Motors imo. What do you guys think about these?
The Lotus Carlton/Omega did 0-60 in 5.1 seconds, the Ferrari Testarossa did it in 5.2 seconds. The Lotus was an utter demon dressed in a business suit. And the absolute epitome of Lotus ethos, not the “add lightness” one but the other one where they stuck 2 fingers up at the competition and went toe to toe with the Italians and everyone else and often beat them.
Putting that much power into a sedan to get it competing with super cars is one of the most bad ass stories in the history of cars. In the UK it was a scandal, all over the news they tried to stop it being made.
To put it in perspective, the Lotus Carlton/Omega was the fastest production sedan on the planet for 10 years.
An entire decade.
I think it's 3.6l straight six. And at the time, the m3 was a natural 2.3l i4 lol. The lotus made basically twice as much hp power and offered a 6-speed when 5-speed was the norm.
Once saw it described as the “millennium falcon of saloons” and thought it was just perfect.
My local drug dealer had one.
It was my dream car as my dad had a regular Omega 3000 and I thought that was a rocketship. And since we lived in a different world back then without Internet all you heard were rumours about there being a Lotus version of it and it was almost mythical. I remember seeing it in a magazine for the first time and it blew me away. Porsche, BMW, Mercedes had nothing on this! I'd have one in a heartbeat today.
Some of the best car designs I’ve ever seen. Hard to put one over the other.
Which one looks the best?
S2 Elise is timeless
Also I think Lotus agrees judging by the design of the new Emira being a direct homage to the Elise in my eyes. It may have the same general dimensions as the outgoing Evora but it’s proportioned like an Elise which makes it look smaller than the Evora with its long front overhang
Evora GT with carbon pack
Esprit, not sure about S1 or S2, probably S1 in “the spy who loved me” white. Also really really like the Emira,
S4s Esprit
Emira

What a great color for a +2
Mrs. Peel.......we are needed!
Oh that is beautiful.
They are so cool! I want one, but I'm not sure if I can afford to keep it going or not. I also have put myself on hold from buying any new cars until all the current ones are put back together and running.
I haven't paid much attention to old Lotuses in a long time, but now with the new tire model this Lotus 79 is just sick. I tried it on a couple of tracks and couldn't wipe off the nonstop wide grin on my face. Super responsive, great FFB and tons of grip. I could even full throttle oversteer out of some slow corners without losing it, which used to be impossible.
Omg, this series so needs to get popular next season.
It has always been my favorite car. Well, in the 2 months I've been on the service it's been my favorite car. To me it's the best sounding car on the service that I've tried.
Tomorrow's r/iracing top post: why is the lotus 79 too fast after the update?! I set a time 20 seconds faster than real life?!?
Ok but on a serious note does anyone know if they are similar to irl lap times? I’m not sure which tracks they can be compared on, but does grip seem “normal” for this car?
Looks like they are 5-6 seconds faster than they were in 1979, which one would expect from the advances in tyres.
In 1979 they ran at Watkins Glen, with the layout iRacing call classic boot.
Pole was 1:35.615
Best lap in Garage 61, is 01:29.801
All the other circuit from the 1979 season are either not in iRacing, or different layouts.
Race engineer IRL here....
Maybe the real life tires were from the late 1970 and if you put a 79 with current Michelin it would be faster...
People forget this all the time but tires have improved SO MUCH over the last 10-15 years....and in between current tires manufacturer you also have massive differences....
You can take a current 992, put it in Dubai for example and you'll be 4-5 seconds faster with a Michelin than with a Hankook....
Yes!! I have 6 of the 12 tracks for it this season and I’ll sure be racing it every week I’m able to.
I’ve been training on Road Atlanta and it’s amazing (Even if I’m bad and stuck at 1:13:X) 😂
My favorite car by a long shot since the update
I thought the tire model was only updated on the GTP and LMP2 class?
iRacing's tire guy said they added them to GTP, LMP2, SRF, and Lotus 79.
The GEN three supercars as well
I no longer want to drive a car that doesn’t have this tire. It feels so good.
No, Lotus 79 got it too. The difference is very clear.
I'm always team fun AS LONG AS we are SOMEWHAT close to real life. Like even now with the GTPs, what 5 or so seconds faster at Spa? That's still fine in my book though the devs should clearly look at getting it closer to irl. The cars are much more fun to drive now.
I felt that yesterday with mx5 at lime rock. They felt so grippy and i did beat my best time lol
I’m looking for a car that’s under 60k and it can be daily driven. I find it hard to find an evora under 60k so can the others still be daily driven?
I think a DD lotus is called a porsche cayman.
Porsche makes a damn good Lotus
I used to have an Elise. Now have Cayman. It ’s a really nice Lotus
My wife and I DD an Exige S. We DD'd an Elise prior. You just need to plan things.
An Evora would be a better DD because of the extra cargo/passenger space.
The Elise was my ideal car, but not livable. The Cayman/Boxster was too big. It's a great act, but really not a Lotus.
I ended up buying a zz30 MR2 Spyder. 2003 is the ideal year, but 03-05 is good. Clean examples can be found for 10k if you ignore miles. And you should.
Then talk to Brandon at Mitch's Auto Parts (MAP). He built a K swap kit to drop a Honda K20 or K24 into the MR2. A good build with bolt ons is about $15k (he'll even do it for you). I am pushing over 200whp at 8500rpm in mine, in a car weighing almost as little as the Elise (and a lot less than the Boxster). Power to weight is incredible.
Addco front sway bar, Godspeed rear control arms, a front strut tower brace, a breast plate, and a good set of coilovers (KWv3 if you want comfort and performance, BC BR for budget performance).
Lightweight 15x9 +35 wheels with 225/45 front and 245/40 rear 200tw tires gives you all the grip on the world keeping unsprung weight down. Stock brakes are fine as is unless you are doing HPDE days.
A rear luggage rack finishes the build.
You get AC, a radio, a big frunk (large carry on fits), room for golf bag behind the seats, and a rear luggage rack that can haul a lot. In a car weighing under 2,200lbs with 240hp.
It's insanely fun, and I put 18k miles a year on it.
Parts are cheap and plentiful. Repairs are easy and low cost.
My total build including purchase price is well under $40k.
At the local autocross I've yet to lose to a Lotus. And I even traded cars with a guy driving a 2016 911S and we were both 4 seconds faster in my car than his.
If your ego won't let you drive a Toyota, well, that's a different story. But for the money, it's an amazing car that does it all.
Depends on you. I find 2006+ Elise is ok for DD.
Thanks! I couldn't find the car I wanted so figured I'd build it. Lo and behold there's about 300 of us with K swapped Spyders. Quite the active community, lots of support. This was my first project bigger 5han an alternator. It's surprisingly accessible.
Technically an Elise / Exige can be daily driven. The question is if you like torture? Driving something that feels like a go kart is fun when it‘s actually for fun. Driving a go kart (small, hard as a rock suspension, loud) to work every day is torture.
60k miles or 60k monies?
Either way, you can get Evora's to meet both criteria.
Yup, also sort of depends on your commute! Stuck in stop and go traffic for an hour in an Elise on a hot day sucks for sure 😂
Back road commutes on the other hand used to be epic to old job location!
I drove an Opel Speedster Turbo (Elise S2) for nine years (with nitron dampers and semi slicks). I‘d do 3000 mile road trips with it that i‘ve absolutely loved (in the summer without AC)… but those were holidays. I‘ve driven it to work for a few days from time to time (one hour each way including traffic jams in the rush hours)… usually around the third day i would get so sick of it and switch back to my daily with normal seats, quiet tires, AC, good sound insulation…
Feel free to message with any questions. And if you're in NC you're welcome to come give it a drive. I've owned some great cars and this is by far my favorite.
I like the Lotus' approach on sports cars, that being lighter is more fun than being faster. but these days, cars are getting heavier and even Lotus it self is discontinuing the cars that it is famous for. AFAIK there's the a110 and Alfa 4c but if you can afford more than that, what better options are there? I feel like most of the higher quality sports cars and supercars are significantly heavier, unless it's a unrealistically rare and expensive hyper car model that doesn't even seem to be supposed to be driven on the road often.
Do you go into Starbucks and ask…what coffee shop is around that’s better than yours?
But jokes aside I would think McLaren is the high price high performance version of lotus. Still very much lightweight and drivers car. But it’s like 4x the price because of diminishing returns for what I think is not 4x the car.
And check out Radford if money is no object. I think it’s exactly what you’re looking for.
lol sorry for that but because they're discontinuing their light weight cars I thought that you guys might be looking for something else too. thanks for suggesting the mclarens. actually that's what I was thinking as well.
Seriously check out radford. Jenson Button is part owner for them I think. Takes a lotus chassis and makes it a high end boutique coach builder experience. If I have unlimited money, I would still buy that over a Senna.
If you mean light and direct, caterham, Ariel atom, bac mono, motorcycles. Dream car stuff though, McLaren f1. Incredibly light for having a v12
Currently made there’s the BRZ twins and the MX-5 at the other end of the market.
Also the Mr2
I picked an S2000 as my alternative to a Lotus. So much fun!
EVO IX and Beetle are quickest 0-60.
I’ve beat both of those in a drag race
just mean your a better player than the guy that had the evo and the beetle
or the guy had the wrong build
Buddy you're higher than Buzz Aldrin on July 20th, 1969. The Exige is one of the best corner grip cars in the game and an absolutely terrible drag option.
Put rally tires on it and max track for the rest. It cant be beat, grass, gravel or blacktop.
So all this time, I could've had a really good car, but didnt?!
I agree Yesterday I bought this beast and maxed it just for fun It is the best car in handling and acceleration from my point of view I used rsr, f1, M3 gtr, and beetle and then I maxed this beast What a car
best lotus car
