TL;DR Cold brew, dark roasts, and decaf options are often recommended for sensitive stomachs. Brands like Wegmans Daybreak and brewing methods like Aeropress may help reduce acidity-related discomfort.
Understanding Coffee Acidity
The term "coffee acidity" can be misleading as it refers to both the taste profile and chemical properties of coffee [2:4]. It's important to note that the acidity in coffee is not directly related to its pH level, which is much higher than acidic beverages like soda
[2:1]. Instead, certain compounds in coffee can stimulate stomach acid production, causing discomfort. N-methylpyridinium, a compound formed during roasting, may suppress stomach acid production, suggesting darker roasts might be easier on the stomach
[2:3].
Brewing Methods
Brewing methods significantly impact the acidity of coffee. Cold brew is often recommended because it tends to have lower acidity compared to other methods [2:5],
[3:2]. However, some individuals find cold brew still causes discomfort, possibly due to the type of beans or concentration used
[5:1]. Using an Aeropress has been suggested as another method that might reduce acidity
[5:7].
Roast Types and Bean Quality
Dark roasts are generally considered less acidic and might be gentler on the stomach [5:3]. Organic options are also recommended, as they may contain fewer additives that could irritate the stomach
[5:3]. Additionally, high-quality, freshly roasted beans might alleviate stomach issues compared to supermarket brands
[2:6],
[4:3].
Decaf Alternatives
For those with severe sensitivity, decaf coffee is often suggested as caffeine itself can exacerbate acid reflux by relaxing the gastroesophageal sphincter [4:2]. Several users reported switching to decaf helped manage their symptoms
[3:6],
[4:8].
Specific Recommendations
Brands like Wegmans Daybreak were mentioned as low-acid options [5:1]. For those interested in adjusting the acidity of their coffee, Third Wave Water offers mineral packets designed to create a more alkaline brew
[4:7]. Lastly, Sumatran coffees are often cited as naturally low-acid
[1:5].
I've drank coffee my whole life, but in the last couple years it has started really irritating my intestines and giving me an uneasy bloated feeling that really impacts my productivity at work.
I've done a bit of research and found these brands: EuroMild, Tieman's Fusion Coffee Low Acid Medium Roast, HealthWise Low Acid Coffee, and Java Planet Coloumbia Organic.
They all advertise themselves as low acid so hopefully that base will be covered, so I would like to ask the experts here about the taste of these. My favorite coffee right now, believe it or not, is McCafe Light Roast Breakfast Blend. I know it's not gourmet or fancy, but that taste is wonderful to me, so I'm looking for something that tastes as similar to that as possible. I like it's light, nutty flavor, and have fallen out of love with dark roasts. However, I also have found out that lighter roasts have more caffeine and tend to be rougher on your stomach. In fact I haven't found any coffee that advertises itself as low acid that is a light roast at all. :(
Of course if there are any other low acid semi-McCafe-Breakfast-blend-like coffees out there that you would recommend, please let me know.
I'm also trying to keep it under $20 a pound if possible.
Thanks all!
I used to drink a lot of coffee in the past and then developed stomach problems (Acid reflux etc). With coffee I've realised now that only espresso based drinks work with me. I was an at an event and had a cappuccino, no problem. I had a second one, with decaf beans, no problem. So I took the beans home and used my moka pot - horrible bloating and cramping etc. I tried this on another day and the same effect with bloating etc. I went and used the same beans in an espresso maching in a friend's office - no problem.
French press = same problem. Cold brew = less of a problem but still present.
I think it's something to do with the extraction time. I realised that I can drink Indian flter coffee (70% coffee 30% chicory) with much less problems.
I read that espresso based drinks were better to drink because of the pressure of the extraction process by espresso machines reducing acidity of coffee on a Harvard Medical website.
I go to a local coffeeshop, not a chain coffeeshop, and I've noticed my throat doesn't feel sore from it.
But, cold brew I buy at grocery store, I feel the sore throat effect. Also, dark chocolate loosens the esophageal sphincter also, so I have stopped the chocolate finally.
One tip I can add is, I decided to put 1/3 to 1/2 a frozen banana with 1/2 cup cold brew and 1/2 cup almond milk in my Vita-mixer and blend. It works very well. Have to get used to the banana taste, but will play around with it. Also, in time, think I will like it fine.
Are you drinking black or adding cream and sugar
I drank it black my whole life. When my stomach started acting up I put a drop or two of cream in it, no sugar. It seemed to help just a little tiny bit.
Sumatran coffees often are low-acid.
When you drink coffee, do you have something in your stomach?
I've dealt with acid reflux/GERD and coffee so I have a couple of thoughts on this.
I'm not sure about acidity in coffee and it's relationship to stomach issues. There is a natural assumption to think that higher levels of acidity contribute to stomach acidity and therefore cause more stomach problems but that isn't the actual case. Your stomach has some serious acid in there already and the tiny amount of acid in coffee isn't going to hold a candle to it. So it's not like acidity in coffee is the direct cause, so it's likely that a lot of the "low acid" coffee marketing spiel is just nonsense.
That said I'm not saying that coffee doesn't effect the digestive system, it definitely does. I think there are two primary ways, one by causing acid reflux (which is actually mostly a relaxing of the esophageal sphincter) and the second is making you poop by increasing the activity of the colon. As a side note, the difference in caffeine is tiny between light and dark roasts(like unmeasurable tiny), and even decaf coffee can have these effects, so it's not 100% caffeine related.
In summary I would say try a variety of coffees and see what works for you (I know super unhelpful). Also, having coffee with food (and maybe with milk) and reducing the amount of coffee you consume at a time are also really effective ways to manage stomach problems and coffee.
I have a sensitive stomach but coffee is one of my consistent joys in life. I know i should probably give it up but i want to exhaust my options before I do that. I've read about low acid coffees but it sort of seems like a scam? If you have a sensitive stomach, which brands or blends work for you?
The only way to really get coffee without much acidity is by changing your brewing method, cold brew tends to have a very low acidity, supposedly coffee made in an aeropress has a relatively low acidity too. I believe that darker roasts tend to have a lower acidity too.
Yes 100% to this!
I think a lot of people misunderstand what "acidity" in coffee actually is. It is not pH. A can of soda has a way lower pH than any cup of coffee, yet is easier on the stomach than coffee.
The stuff that make coffee feel "acidic" (from a gastrointestinal perspective) is the fact that many coffees have chemicals which promote excessive stomach acid production. There are some recent studies which suggest that N-methylpyridinium actually suppresses stomach acid production, which is a chemical that is formed during the roasting process. This suggests a link between higher roast levels being easier on your stomach.
> . . . N-methylpyridinium actually suppresses stomach acid production, which is a chemical that is formed during the roasting process. This suggests a link between higher roast levels being easier on your stomach.
This has been my experience in a big, BIG way. I used to not be able to drink light roasts before I got on medication for my GERD. They're delicious but weren't worth it, lol.
This makes me sad. My GERD is increasing and I LOVE alight roast.
That's been my experience as well.
Yeah, the confusion is that in some contexts, "coffee acidity" is a taste profile, and in other contexts it's a chemical (or gastrointestinal) profile. They are related but certainly not synonymous.
And then there is the discussion of "acid reflux", which describes stomach acid, but is sometimes confused as something that is caused by acidic food and drink. But caffeine all by itself, completely besides the acidity of the coffee, or even in non-coffee beverages entirely, is one well-known trigger of acid reflux for many people.
I think there's a pretty broad consensus that dark roasts, as a very general rule, tend to be easier on the stomach. But it's certainly not universal for different people NOR for different coffees.
lower pH might increase reflux as the lower the pH of the stomach the more likely the pyloric sphincter cannot close completely and then up comes the reflux. I have achlohydria from meds like nexium and pepcid which reduced my stomach acid so much I can't digest overt protein without a large amount of acidic supplements (betaine HCL .. 10 650mg caps .. most people need a couple)
in this situation the differences are probably negligible.
Don't know if it's related but ever since i stopped buying low quality beans my morning stomach issues after breakfast disappeared. I guess higher quality coffee makes a big difference. Ironically, acidic ethiopian beans dont cause me problems now but van houte/folgers/maxwell house did.

Same with me. Freshly roasted coffee works fine - still makes me go to the toilet 2 times but no stomach problems. 1 or 2 weeks with supermarket coffee often gives me terrible stomach feeling.
Mostly it's a marketing scam. Coffee does have natural pH variation, but the variation is so tiny and the acidity is such a minor part of most folks' gastrointestinal issues that they're mostly just sales tactics.
Cold brew. You can even make one at home. Super easy lang. Research on it. Buy medium roast beans as well.
Up for this! Cold brew is so easy and not acidic.
Yessss. I have GERD but coffee is life, and cold brew is my lifesaver.
Try cold brew. Totoo nga, di ako naaacid. 😄
Talaga ba? Sige subukan ko din iyan. Thank you po.
I was advised to drink decaf coffee and it really helps.
GERD girlie here! Great Taste Granules isn’t too bad sa tummy ko. Haha
Long term GERD sufferer here. It’s the caffeine that triggers my acid reflux so even cold brew is a no-no for me. I go for decaf instead, dark roast.
So I have bad heart burn and acid reflux. Like to the point that I don’t drink orange juice cause I’ll instantly have heart burn. I do have it on rare occasion and just await the inevitable but I barely do.
I love my one cup of coffee a day tho and don’t wanna give it up but I know every time I’ll soon have heartburn and an upset stomach.
Are low acidic coffee beans legit? Also does anyone else have bad heartburn and upset stomach from coffee and found a solution? The obvious answer would be no more coffee but I’d rather not. 🥲
By the way I usually buy whole beans and grind them and make cold brew.
Decaf. As others have said it’s not really the acidity. Caffeine is a smooth muscle relaxer and greatly worsens reflux by relaxing the gastroesophageal sphincter.
There are some good decafs available but you have to search a bit.
Acidity isn’t likely the problem but you can try brewing with custom water with extra bicarbonate which neutralizes the acid.
If you’re really stuck on the caffeine try other anti reflux measures like elevating the head of your bed, acid suppressants like a PPI or H2 blocker.
I also get heartburn bad.. don't drink OJ or pretty much any juices. However I go through 5 or 6 cups of coffee a day. Roast your own, the beans you buy whole just about anywhere are going to be over roasted and stale. Find a local roaster and get some quality beans fresh roasted, see if that helps. It works for me.
I've been roasting all of the coffee that my wife and I drink for the past six years, but her reflux 100% caused by coffee, regardless of the source. I'm not discounting what you're saying, just adding a YMMV label 😅
My wife has issues with reflux and it’s pretty much gone away for her since she cold brews dark roasted Rwandan karongi getesi, which is pretty low acid
I don’t believe it’s actually acidity that’s bothering your heartburn. Coffee has a pH between a potato and a strawberry. I think it’s caffeine and other compounds that are bothering your stomach.
I am certainly not an expert with regards to coffee or stomach health. However, I have found that my stomach issues with coffee are almost completely caused by brewing methods which leave more oils in the final beverage such as French press. I subbed out my French press for other more filtered methods and have never looked back.
Not sure of the oil content in Coldbrew like OP mentioned compared to others. Just figured I would mention my anecdotal story.
My brother also has acid reflux and he turned to decaf coffee because of the doctor’s recommendation.
I don’t want to sound like a nay sayer but if your reflux is that bad maybe you shouldn’t be drinking coffee. The caffeine is probably going to set you off regardless of acidity. I guess you could do decaf.
I recently saw Third Wave Water now makes a "Low Acid Profile" of their mineral packets. Basically a more alkaline version. TWW founder said he made it for his dad who was struggling with GI issues & almost had to give up coffee. https://thirdwavewater.com/pages/low-acid-landing
My doctor also said that the caffeine relaxes the sphincter at the top of my stomach which allows for acid to work its way up. He also said that the acidity of coffee was nothing compared to stomach acid, so a cup or so wouldn’t hurt. The GI specialist I saw didn’t seem to agree with that one.
I went through a rough spot where I drank way more coffee than I should have and basically was told that I had damaged my insides so until it healed it would hurt. Now I can sort of tell when it’s going to flare up and control it with antacids and pills before it gets bad if I have to. But keeping it to 1 (or 1.5) cup of coffee in the mornings instead of a pot seems to have helped a lot.
Not the case for me. I have tried various decaf alternatives with the same reaction. It is most definitely the acidity in my case.
Haha. Actually a coffee loving physician with reflux. Took up roasting to have more decaf options available.
I suffer from HH and GERD, trying to find the best coffee options to feel decent.
I read that cold brew is better because it's less acidic. I made some and it made me feel worse than my low-acid K cups. Could it possibly be because I used dark roast in the cold brew?
Does anyone have any coffee suggestions for a low-acid for cold brew?
If you want less acidic coffee, drink cold brew coffee. When drinking cold brew you should keep in mind that a lot of the stuff you buy at the store is a concentrate, and you’re meant to dilute it. Also make sure it’s not full of preservatives and other junk. You can make your own cold brew at home super easily.
I didn’t read your post before commenting AMD see you’ve explained this already, oops.
An organic dark roast has helped me alot. I drink it black with some honey.
But isn't dark roast more acidic? What brand?
I've read that it's actually less acidic. Which is why I started drinking it. I believe it has something to do with the way its roasted that it doesn't produce a certain chemical that irritates the stomach like medium roasts do. I have Wegmans brand, it's called Daybreak. Whatever you do don't use coffee creamer, that really gave me reflux. Look at the ingredients that are in those.
I react everytime to any kind so I eat a tums every time I drink coffee and voila!
Any decaff coffee works for me. I drink nescafe decaff
I am using an Aeropress now. It seems to help.
My morning coffee helps get things moving to go to the bathroom, but it is awful on my stomach. Has anyone found anything that helps? I’ve tried lower acid coffee, dark roast, but I don’t feel they help.
I also enjoy the routine of having something hot to drink first thing in the morning. I should switch to black tea, but it’s just not the same for me.
Joe’y, a cocoa-based coffee alternative has been pretty good for me. I will say that, with IBS, you want to start out at a smaller serving than they suggest just to be certain the chicory root doesn’t bother your insides, but I found it to be quite nice, kind of like drinking hot chocolate instead.
I used to eat Fiber One bars occasionally. The chicory root sometimes upset my stomach and sometimes it didn’t. This product sounds like a good alternative to coffee.
How's your fiber intake? I notice that coffee ripped my stomach apart when I wasnt taking a supplement, but now that I am it doesn't do much.
My fiber intake is very good. I’m going to add Miralax though.
Coffee used to be great. But my pelvic floor or some shit is fucked up. So now it just secrets stomach acid. Induces peristaltic action. Then I'm literally thrusted into misery feeling like I have to shit and it just inflames my entire colon / rectum. Along with LUTS. Useless fucking "doctors"... literally never had any issues until they popped up overnight 4 years ago.
I’m sorry you had that change with coffee. What do you drink or take now? I’m hoping the coffee alternatives or supplements will help.
Iv fried my endocrine system with many years of substance abuse. But mainly lead by alcohol / Stims / atypical substances like kratom. And ultimately... Benzodiazepine.. when I quit all this shit. Everything changed over night about 2 months off. PAWS hit hard. I used to have a hormone modulation probably with kratom / benzos / coffee every morning. It's like without the benzo my muscles habe forgotten how to function. Along side bombing my system with narcotics the second I woke up. ( body does so much shit when you first wake up. Cortisol + glucagon etc etc.
Now I drink lots of water and take magnesium complex the second i wake up. Try to have my bowl movements. Then the rest of the day it's quercetin + bromelain.. methylated multivitamin.. and grassfed beef kidney + 50 billion cfu probiotic + ashwagandha. Nothing helps. Tbh the most crucial 2 things are diet and more importantly solid sleep which i never get because I'm up all hours of the night pissing. Doctors are useless.. specialist are useless.. iv thought about just killing myself a few times. It gets so bad Like my body and brain and GBA have completely disconnected. Dysbiosis and I.I.P is what it feels like.
I can’t drink any iced coffee. Locks me up. Never tried real coffee.
Try and drink darker roasts. It has less acid. I generally find it's easier on my stomach.
Okay - please don’t blast me for this. I have a medical condition that doesn’t allow for me to enjoy strong coffee anymore without vomiting.
I am looking for some input on a smooth, albeit weak, organic coffee. Nothing that has an overly acidic tone.
Serious comments only please. Thanks!
Is it the caffeine or the acidity that causes issues?
There are lots of low acidic coffees like this if the latter.
Both, but I can control how much coffee I drink for caffeine purposes. It’s the acidity that I have the most trouble with, even when I pour ⅓ milk into my cup. I know...gross. I just love my morning cup of coffee too much. Thanks for the link!
I'd recommend decaf. The Swiss Water process has the side effect of reducing acidity.
Have you thought about using a mixed chicory/coffee blend or going to full chicory coffee? Though if you have done pollen allergies it might flare it. I'm not too positive.
I’ve never heard of chicory coffee! Is the caffeine content stronger or weaker than regular coffee? I also ask this because I have a caffeine sensitivity as well. I’d certainly be willing to give it a try and will see where I can buy it.
Chicory coffee blends are a great idea. Trader Joe's has one, if you have a TJ in your area.
If it's pure Chicory, there's no caffeine. Though brands like cafe du monde in the orange can has a mix of both coffee and Chicory.
I personally have never have had pure roasted chicory coffee but I hear it's similar to coffee but a bit woodier.
My sister loves a brand called Teeccino. She drinks it for health reasons too. It's organic herbal chicory coffee that comes in a bunch of different blends and flavors.
I'd think the easiest way to attain this would be to buy cold Brew which is already low on acids and then double dilute it. You'll still get a good flavor and it should be far less problematic.
I agree with this suggestion, although I would make my own cold brew. rather than buy it. You can dilute it to your preferred strength (and temperature). If you don't like cold brew, you can always brew a small cup with whatever your preferred method is, then dilute it after brewing. Don't fall into the trap of using a higher water:coffee ratio to make a weaker cup. You'll just get bitter, thin coffee. Brew at the recommended ratios, then dilute the result.
If you're on the West Coast, look into Dutch Bros. They serve a type of very lightly roasted coffee thats very nutty and light in flavor. It's called white coffee. It might be what you're looking for
It takes as long to make as regular coffee: grind (coarse), put in jar or purpose built cold brew maker, add water, shake, stick in fridge. Wait 36 hours, shaking occasionally. Pour, dilute, heat up, drink.
Arguably it takes less long, as you typically make several days' worth at once.
Hi everyone! I recently purchased a coffee pod machine pero hindi ako makahanap ng brand na gut friendly pero kaya akong ipaglaban sa antok ko. So ayun, sa mga acidic na coffee lover dyan… can you share coffee pod brands na okay? Saka yung kaya akong gisingin buong araw huhu ung nttry ko kasi inaantok parin ako.
TIA!
This is more of a trial and error. Iba iba stomach natin pagdating sa acid and GERD. Personally, I have GERD too and I can drink coffee and decaf and soda without any issue but I cant drink liquor, beer, and spicy foods without bloating and having excessive burps/gas. I know someone who cannot drink a lot of coffee and decaf but can drink soda and lemonade.
Best to ask your doctor or a nutritionist for suggestions.
On the se boat pero if pods, I usually just go for darker roasts para less acid, trial and error sa brands na hiyang ka lang tlaga. Pero, if hndi mo padin kaya itolerate, consult a health expert.
When it comes to coffee, the descriptor 'acidic' is most commonly (and appropriately) used to describe the taste of the coffee. It shouldn't be used to describe how the coffee negatively affects your digestive tract. If you wanted to say it causes discomfort in your stomach, just say precisely that. The proper use of the descriptor is important because it is not the acids in the coffee beans that cause discomfort in your stomach, but rather the caffeine content. Caffeine triggers the stomach lining to increase the secretion of gastric acid, and this increase in gastric acid secretion is what causes stomach discomfort. The effect of ingesting coffee bean acids on lowering gastic pH is very neglible compared to the effect of increasing gastric acid secretion - that stuff is really made of strong acid. The coffee acids really just affect the taste of the coffee.
Anyway, knowing this, just look for decaf options. Most people stop experiencing negative symptoms of caffeine after switching to decaf. Might be harder to find for coffee pods though. The downside to this is that you will also stop gaining the psychoactive effects of caffeine: pampagising. Hmm. You might wanna try consulting a doctor, he might prescribe some PPIs that you would take in the morning before drinking coffee. But any good doctor would surely know that removing the cause is better than treating the disease. It's better to avoid the trigger instead of taking a drug to avoid the effect of the trigger. The better advice would be to avoid coffee altogether. The negative symptoms could be a sign that you're getting addicted to caffeine. Or maybe switch to tea. Or try decaf.
Hallo Hallo adultingph!
I love coffee but recently naging acidic akom whats the best brand for low acidic coffee?
3-in-1 coffee is pretty terrible TBH. It is some of the lowest quality coffee you can get. If you can’t help but have instant coffee, don’t use 3-in-1, just mix your own instant black coffee with milk (and sweetener, if needed). Nescafe is fine. I drink a lot of coffee throughout the day and find that iced coffee doesn’t trigger my acidity. Best is cold brew coffee. Just get any brand of coffee beans, and have it coarsely ground (for french press). Even generic supermarket coffee that you can buy in bulk works. The least acidic will be dark roast coffee, so pick that, brand doesn’t really matter IMO. Also, if you haven’t gotten your acidity checked, you should see a doctor. The most common treatment I’ve seen is just a course of Omeprazole (?) for 14 days. Worked wonders for me.
Same! I had a doc prescribe omeprazole for 14 days and had a ultrasound done recently wala naman daw mali sa stomach ko easyhan ko lang daw sa kape haha, unfortunately I'm one of those people who prefer hot coffee over iced 😅 but will try nescafe stick with cream and sugar
I sell cold brew coffee! Kahit un pinaka sensitive na tummies hindi inaatake ng acidity pag ininom un gawa ko ahehe.
Sounds interesting and wanna try! Loc niyo po haha
Manila City! Pinakamalayo kong buyer is taga taguig hehehe I'll send u the pricelist
Acidic din ako at grabe sakin yung Kopiko Black dati haha. Nung nag-switch ako sa Nescafe Original (yung pula tas may available din na kambal sachet), di nako nakaranas ulit.
Interesting might look onto it further, thank you for your insight!
Kopiko L.A. Coffee–the first low-acid coffee mix in the Philippines daw 😅
Ohh will try!
I was excited to start drinking a morning cup of coffee with a little half and half and a teaspoon of sugar. At first, it was great. I loved the flavor and the energy boost. But after a couple months I started getting acid indigestion and it pretty quickly became a constant thing. I was popping Tums several times a day. One morning I skipped the coffee, and almost immediately the acid indigestion disappeared. I stopped the coffee, but Argh! Is this a common problem? Is there a cure? Is there a type of coffee that doesn't come with acid indigestion?
Try different brands or types of beans to find one that works for you. Some types of beans are more acidic than others.
I get heartburn from arabica beans and most of the big name/ less expensive brands of coffee. Drip brewed coffee is also harder on my stomach than french pressed or espresso.
There are lower acid coffees. Try a search on Amazon. And look for a smooth taste. Also, definitely eat something.
Go to a local roaster that lists the acidity of the different coffees they offer. Grocery store brands all include cheap beans mixed in while most small roasters only use the high-quality beans.
First: don't drink coffee on an empty stomach. At about 1/2 teaspoon of C Ceylon Cinnamon, stirred in very well, we'll make it seem absolutely decadent . Ceylon cinnamon is the ledge to have hopeful benefits, as well. Plus, it tastes yummy! A cup of coffee with a little sweetener of your choice, a little milk/cream of your choice and cinnamon almost taste like dessert!
Just don't drink it on an empty stomach and you should be fine.
Try another brand before giving up entirely.
I've had acid problems with one particular brand, but not any of the others.
I seem to remember darker roasts are less acidic?
Best low-acid coffee for sensitive stomach
Key Considerations for Low-Acid Coffee:
Roast Level: Darker roasts tend to be lower in acidity compared to lighter roasts. Look for coffee labeled as "dark roast" or "French roast."
