TL;DR
Popular Brands for Sensitive Skin
Clinique is highly recommended across multiple discussions for individuals with sensitive skin. It is praised for its hypoallergenic products, including mascara, eyeshadows, foundations, and lip products [3:4]. Almay is another brand that appears consistently in recommendations due to its gentle formulations suitable for sensitive skin
[3:1],
[4:1].
Neutrogena is mentioned as a reliable option, particularly for its Sheers foundation [4:2]. Eucerin and Cetaphil also come up as brands that cater to sensitive skin needs, although they are more known for skincare than makeup
[3:1].
Clean Beauty Options
Tower 28 is highlighted as a clean beauty brand that caters to sensitive skin. Their SPF foundation is specifically recommended [4:3]. Honeybee Gardens is noted for its affordable eyeshadow palettes that do not irritate eyelids
[1:5].
Asian Beauty Brands
Some users suggest Korean and Japanese makeup brands, which often emphasize skincare in their formulations. Stylenanda and Missha are mentioned, although there is caution regarding Missha's fragrance potentially causing irritation [1:1],
[1:4].
Specific Product Recommendations
For eyeliners, Nyx Epic Wear Long Lasting Liquid Eyeliner is suggested as a good option for sensitive skin [5:1]. Lime Crime's Venus Liquid Liner was also recommended but may no longer be available
[5:1].
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
When choosing makeup for sensitive skin, it's important to avoid products with fragrances and unnecessary ingredients that could trigger reactions [3:2]. Checking expiration dates and ensuring brushes are cleaned properly can prevent bacterial growth and potential irritation
[3:5],
[3:4]. If you're new to makeup or have had past reactions, consulting with a dermatologist or allergist might provide personalized advice tailored to your skin's needs.
I have very sensitive skin and eyes, especially when it comes to makeup. I'm looking for makeup products that are safe for someone like me. Everytime I use eyeliner, mascara, or eyeshadow then I start tearing up like I just witnessed the cutting of an onion. And some products can leave my skin feeling dry and itchy, and the worst is when I start getting red skin or pimples from products. Because of this, I have abstained from wearing makeup for years, but I want to get back into it again and have fun with my creativity.
Any suggestions?
Clinique is great for sensitive skin!
Thank you! I'll check it out :)

Honestly, I love Korean and Japanese brands. They're great for sensitive skin, since Asian countries put more emphasis on skin care in everyday products than most western countries, but they can be tricky to find if you don't order online. Stylenanda and Missha are 2 very goods brands that come to mind
To be honest, as much as I like Missha BB cream and sometimes use their primer, because of quite a fragrance I wouldn't recommend it to someone with sensitive skin and/or nose. Ingredients that make it smell as much as it does, may trigger skin reaction, and smell itself may cause headache :(
Honeybee Gardens has never irritated my eyelids. Great, affordable eyeshadow pallettes.
I'll take a look and see :) thanks!
I was using a retinol for almost a year for my acne that made my skin extra sensitive and now I’ve been recently struggling with irritant dermatitis. I want to start using more sensitive/cleaner makeup to prevent this dermatitis from getting worse. What brands should I buy from and which brands should I definitely avoid? Thanks!

I grew up in a family with sensitive skin, and Physician's Formula, Neutrogena, and Almay did well. Tower 28 is also a clean brand for people with sensitive skin, and it's been working out for me
This question is for all my sensitive skin besties or people who just wanna share.
About a month ago I used my favorite eyeshadow pallet (which I have never had issues with before) and I broke out severely around my eyes, lips, and cheeks. I used eyeshadow, a highlight, blush, eyeliner, and clean brushes. It frustrated me so bad and I want to put makeup on again, i'm just very scared I will have another reaction. I will admit I probably did something wrong, granted im not very knowledgable on makeup and application.
If anyone knows any tips or brands that is hypoallergenic i would really appreciate it!
Are you sure it was the makeup that caused the reaction? You don't list any lip makeup but list your lips as breaking out as well. It almost sounds like more of a skincare product reaction since the irritation was on the majority of your face.
In my experience, what is irritating/sensitizing to your skin is somewhat personalized. If you have sensitive skin def stay away with things with fragrance and unnecessary ingredients, but you could also be sensitive or allergic to specific ingredients for no particular reason (eg niacinimide, pigments like carmine, preservatives, lack of preservatives/stabilizers, etc).
I actually put blush around my chin and lips. I don't use any skincare products either. Thank you for the advice as well, a lot of this is new to me and very confusing 😅
So how do you remove makeup?
I don't use any skincare products either.
I strongly recommend rectifying this ASAP.
Clinique
clinique! all of their products are hypoallergenic, their mascara is the only one i’m not allergic to and i’ve never broken out from their eyeshadows, foundations, or lip products. if you’re having a reaction to a product you’ve used in the past no problem it’s possible it’s gone bad. this is less common with powder products like eyeshadows but they can still get moldy. if the brushes were new, it’s also possible that they were treated with chemicals during the manufacturing process that were never washed off, so if you wash them with a gentle cleanser it’s possible that could fix it too.
Your makeup is likely expired. They have expiration dates because they will start to harbor bacteria after that!
Almay, Clinique, Eucerin, cetaphil, Cerave
My skin is very eczema and hives prone. Any little thing sets me off. I've been to many dermatologists and doctors but like many others, they just say I'm sensitive. I LOVE makeup but most of it makes me flare or I can only wear it like twice a week before it begins to bother me. What are some brands of makeup, specifically for like foundation/concealer and eyeliner/mascara that is favored for people like me? I can't use anything with any smell or at least lasting smell. Thanks!
I’ve had good experiences with Pur and Neutrogena. I prefer to use Neutrogena’s Sheers on my face and Pur’s pot concealer sparingly in the areas I need extra coverage.
Try tower 28s new SPF foundation!
Almay
Hellooo, Ive been wanting to try goth makeup for a while but every eyeliner I tried (even kiko's vegan one) burns my skin 🥀 also I have allergies to a lot of makeup ( as a kid the ones they used to draw on your face and more recently a lipstick, eyeliners its probably because I got surgeries on my eyelids tho theyre fine now😭)
anyway any recommandations ? Im looking for a white powder (fundation I think? I also suck with products names sorry) and maybe an eyeliner or crayon flower knows worked well for me but idk if their white powder is the good stuff thanks!
I have this problem with eyeliner too. So far, the two that worked best for me are the Nyx epic wear long lasting liquid eyeliner, and Lime Crime's venus liquid liner, which I don't think is available anymore ;(
okeyyy thanks 🐺👍
Does anyone have any makeup brands for people with super sensitive skin? I i find la Roche posay stuff works very well for my skin and no other brands do. But I’d like some makeup recommendations
Tarte is known to be a good brand for people with sensitive skin.
I love Surratt for foundation. Nothing irritating, doesn't dry my skin, and wears well. I've had bad experiences with many others.
I’ve been really impressed with Honest Beauty’s Calm line. I use the cleanser and moisturizer. All in the line have the NEA seal of acceptance too, if I’m not mistaken.
Drunk Elephant could work. There's a lot of ingredients in each product but they leave out 6 of the common irritants which the company dubs "the suspicious 6" I've sensitive skin and DE is sometimes all I can use (along with CeraVe) when tretinoin bitchslaps my skin barrier.
I have extremely sensitive, finicky skin with Rosacea. I’m finding Well People to not irritate my skin. I like the mascara, lip/cheek stick, Bio Tint, and foundation stick, I alternate between the tint and stick. Also Plain Jane Beauty is a black, female owned brand of makeup and she has skincare called Lotus Moon. I like the makeup a lot so far. Their customer service is great too! And recently I ’ve tried RMS beauty and I like it so far.
I don’t wear makeup super often because I have sensitive skin and no matter what i’ve tried, I end up with more breaks after wearing. I need an new foundation, would like it to be clean and buildable. I have flakey patches sometimes and wrinkles that I don’t want to accentuate. My skin is both oily and dry. Preferably something from a store like Sephora where I know I can return if I have an allergic reaction.
For lighter wear I’ve tried bb and cc creams to tone redness and just minimize blemishes without being a whole full face situation. But dont like the ones I’ve tried bc they look sheer in some spots and covered in others when i blend. Looking at maybe a serum one like Ilia?
Problem is, it takes me so long to go through what i’ve got that even when I find something decent, sometimes by the time I rebuy they change the formula or the shades. Frustrating.
Clean mascara brands are also welcomed for rec’s! I recently tried Thrive Causemetics and bought a whole slew of products but returned most. I loved the way the mascara looked but it flaked all over. Then I tried Milk Kush, which i’ve had before and liked. But it also was flaky this time. Tried the mascara primer too but the formula of actual mascara felt too dry and it was hard to cover up the white primer since it didn’t spread well.
If anyone has recommendations for youtube/instagram people too that do reviews on clean beauty id love that too!
Tower 28 was created by someone with sensitive skin and is a so-called "clean" brand. You may like some of the products on offer there, among them being a tinted SPF. (I haven't tried it myself as I don't think I have a good shade match.)
I used to use Ilia's skin tint but won't be repurchasing it. It dries down darker than it applies, and unless you want to look super glowy, it may not be the thing for you. Coverage wasn't too bad but I'd recommend their actual foundation over the skin tint if you want to try a complexion product of theirs.
Mascara-wise, are you looking for a volumizing one, a lengthening one, or something that's more "my lashes but better"?
My lashes but better for sure. I will do false lashes for big events but mascara mostly normal nights out just wanting to look nicer.
Tower 28's Make Waves looks like it may be a good option (I'm looking at it for myself). Ilia Limitless Lash may also appeal to you.
Have you heard of the brand well people? They have a line of skincare and makeup. I enjoy their tinted moisturizer with SPF very much. They have a good mascara as well. It’s midrange pricing I’d say. You can get it from ulta or target in the US.
I would not recommend ilia skin tint if you are oily. It is a very greasy product. Something similar you might like would be the Saie beauty slip tint. It’s a tinted moisturizer with SPF and is fragrance free.
I have, ive had the liquid liner before and the mascara before but never the foundation. They don’t carry it in my local stores and despite being artsy im just horrible at color matching so I usually try to go somewhere where a sales person can help me with that. I just ran to Ulta after this post and grabbed Beauty Counter for now since I have somewhere to go tonight. Last time i was there it had the best match to my skin i felt out of what they showed me. But im not 100% sold after applying it so i might still be on the hunt and will try Well People
I guess with most of my shades especially if I can’t find reviews of people with my skin tone.
You do have to go with what your best shade match is no matter the brand. Hopefully you do find something you like.
Try Clinique or Bare Minerals. Both are excellent for sensitive skin, and can be found at Sephora. And both brands have a range of foundations, with different levels of coverage, catering to a variety of concerns.
Ilia mascara is not only the best clean mascara, but the best mascara overall imo
Seconding this suggestion! I use Ilia and it’s great. I have really oily eyelids too and as long as I don’t spend 8+ hours in the sun on a humid 90F day, it doesn’t flake or smudge off :)
The only makeup I can use is Colourpop. I have extremely sensitive skin and highly allergic to most makeups. Nyx and Colourpop are my safe zones.
In a theater production and need to buy some makeup that is pigmented/will show up on stage under lights. My eyes have been extremely irritated lately with my regular NYX/Lancome/Maybelline picks, so I need to find some other brands that I can use. I’m pretty broke right now so I really can’t be spending a lot of money. Thanks!
I can’t give you advice but what I can tell you is that the “we won’t take it once you open it” thing with makeup doesn’t (at least in my experience) apply if you’ve had an allergic reaction. Get your money back!!
good to know thank you!!
Also depending on the store you can return opened makeup. CVS has a generous 30 day return policy, even for opened cosmetics. My grocery store chain will take anything back. I've returned opened cosmetics to Target as well.
Oh and don't forget Ulta has a drugstore section and will take opened packages back.
Well the lowest price that you haven't tried would be essence. I have not had any breakouts from that so I'm hoping it would be okay for you.
thank you!
Hello everyone, I’m looking to get back into trying to wear makeup after not wearing them for years (apart from two occasions which I had to wear it for family weddings and got allergic reactions to) due to skin sensitivity to them and just not wanting to deal with a potential reaction.
I have really sensitive skin when it comes to makeup (especially in certain parts of my face which seem to be more sensitive than others when I apply makeup onto like around my eye area) and currently have acne prone skin that I’m working on clearing.
The main makeup bits I’m looking for are lipsticks, eye liner (which I love but hate the sensitivity of it with my eyes with my lashes being the most sensitive around my entire eye region which is why I never wear eyelash stuff even if I do wear makeup because I’d rather not risk it with the eyelashes but love eyeliner soo so much and since it’s less sensitive for me than eye lash stuff I’m hoping their is one out their that won’t cause me to have a reaction to them) and concealer and maybe even some eyeshadow but not too fussy about that one.
For anyone with sensitive skin who uses vegan or cutlery free makeup can you tell me your experience with them aswell please.
Thank you in advance for any and all help and suggestions.
I have super sensitive, acne-prone skin too and found that vegan/cruelty-free brands are a lot gentler. For eyeliner, try Physicians Formula Eye Booster (hypoallergenic) or Ilia Clean Line, both are great for sensitive eyes. For concealer, BareMinerals Original Liquid Concealer or RMS Uncover Up are lightweight and don’t clog pores. Lipsticks: Bite Beauty or Tower 28 (allergy-tested + super creamy).
Patch test everything first! Sensitive skin loves fewer ingredients.
That’s one of the main reasons I wanted to go for a vegan/ cruelty free brand (them also having similar value systems as me also helped tremendously in my decision to go for a vegan brand rather than a non-vegan one) because they tend to have less toxic and harmful products that could cause a reaction within me.
Thank you soo much for all your help I will be checking out all of these brands and products. You have been such help.
In skin sensitivity we unite lol.
And yes I will definitely be patch testing them.
Im sorry if this has already been asked, but are there any brands that are specifically for dry skin, or any brands that have a product line catered towards people with dry skin? I dont trust just any makeup product that says "moisturizing" on it.
I would focus more on the skincare so your makeup has a good base to sit on. My go to for my dryness is Kiehls ultra facial cream. The price tag is worth every penny I love love love it. Also applying your skincare while your face is still slightly damp can help lock in the moisture post shower/face washing.
skin care, skin care, skin care.
I use the same makeup on every skin type, I only change the skin care. The only thing I can say about makeup is to avoid anything too matte or very opaque. Pigment grabs dry skin like mad.
Sobs in memoriam of Becca First Light Primer
You need to sort out your skincare routine. That's going to do much more for you.
🙋♀️did someone say dry/sensitive skin??
I love Laura Mercier. I’m sad that Becca is no longer around. I can use some of Bobbi Brown’s or Nars stuff. Mercier is my ride or die. She has rosacea and sensitive skin and definitely keeps that in mind when developing products.
