TL;DR
Tretinoin and Retinoids
Tretinoin is frequently mentioned as a gold standard for treating acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and improving overall skin texture [1:4],
[2:1],
[5:1]. It is a prescription-strength retinoid that promotes cell turnover and collagen production, which can help reduce the appearance of scars over time. While it can be effective, users note that it requires consistent use and patience to see significant results
[5:4].
Vitamin C Serums
Vitamin C is another popular ingredient for treating acne scars, particularly those involving pigmentation issues. Products like Topicals Faded and Melano CC vitamin C serum are praised for their effectiveness in reducing dark spots and evening out skin tone [1:1],
[3:9]. Vitamin C works by inhibiting melanin production, which helps fade hyperpigmentation and brighten the skin.
Niacinamide and Azelaic Acid
Niacinamide and azelaic acid are also recommended for their anti-inflammatory properties and ability to lighten hyperpigmentation [1:6],
[1:3]. Niacinamide is often used in conjunction with other active ingredients to enhance its effects, while azelaic acid can be prescribed by a dermatologist for more targeted treatment.
Professional Treatments
For deeper or more stubborn acne scars, professional treatments such as microneedling and laser therapy may be necessary [3:3],
[3:8]. Microneedling involves using fine needles to create micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating collagen production and helping to smooth out scars. Laser treatments can also be effective but typically require multiple sessions and can be costly.
Additional Recommendations
Other products that have been positively reviewed include Hero Cosmetics' Recovery Balm and Derma E Scar Gel, both of which are noted for their hydrating and scar-fading properties [1:2],
[2:4]. For those looking for over-the-counter options, Differin (adapalene) is a retinoid available without a prescription that can also help with acne scars
[4:1].
Hi, I’m an 18 year old female, and I’ve popped a lot of pimples in the past few years. I’ve never really had bad acne, but I have popped almost every pimple I’ve ever gotten. I know, I know, that’s bad. Now I’m left with fairly bad acne scarring on my cheeks and a little bit on my forehead. I have probably at most 5 pimples at a time which I am pretty good at taking care of now, but the scarring just will not budge. It is pretty much invisible with makeup on, but I’d prefer to be happy with my skin without makeup. Please help!! Thank you <3
I’ve been using Hero Cosmetics’ Recovery Balm and the Lightning Wand. I really like the Recovery Balm cause it helps hydrate the acne scar, but it’s only mostly effective on current acne scars or especially if you use pimple patches like me.
12.99 definitely worth giving it a try, thank you!
When you say scarring are you referring to redness like PIE or PIH or actual indents in your skin?
You also have to wear suncreen (or avoid the sun) as nothing will work otherwise.
Red and purple spots and a few indents, but mostly the coloring.
In that case I would recommend prescription Azelaic acid (finacea) and vitamin C.
Tretinoin. And never stop using it (other than during pregnancy and breast feeding). It was offered to me so many times but it takes awhile to work and I was young and dumb and wanted something fast. Boy do I regret it. Finally got serious about it two years ago. It’s cheap (typically, anyway) and is the gold standard for acne, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and acne scars.
Is there an over-the-counter Treinoin product that has worked well for you?
I’ve not tried any.
vitamin c and/or niacinamide
My skin can be weird about niacinamide as the main ingredient in a product. The Ordinary’s niacinamide and zinc treatment gave me new breakouts last time I tried it. Niacinamide lower on the ingredient lists in products works okay for me, though. I’ve been getting a lot of people I ask recommending Vitamin C. Do you have any Vitamin C products you know work well?
Have you tried Topicals Faded? I've been using it for a couple of months and it's really helped with my PIH and dark spots from old acne scars.
I have not tried that. I haven’t even heard of it. I’ll bring that up to my dermatologist and see if she thinks that could work for me. Thank you!
I’ve had pretty severe acne most of my life up until the last year or so. I have a pretty good routine now, but I have been a “picker” most of my life. I’ve gotten better but there are some flare ups I’ve had where the scarring just makes me hate my skin. Anyone have any luck with any products they’ve used that have reduced the appearance of dark spots over time?
Tret.
I’m also an acne picker and it’s really evened out my skin tone.
But a good Ulta pick would be the Fourth Ray Beauty Renew Serum. It’s a retinol and is really nice, I did get good results with it, the tret is just quicker and gets even better results.
I always recommend Derma E Scar Gel. It's been a favorite product of mine for years. Helped me fade out head injury scar right in the middle of my forehead. obviously didn't get rid of it, but it's so less noticeable now.
i was going to suggest this too, on my 2nd jar now!! helped lighten thick surgery scars & i use it on my face for acne scars too (interchangeably with niacinamide; they do similar things to my combo-dry skin w hormonal acne)
Discoloration serum from good molecules
my cousin who looked like she had something similar to cystic acne from an undiscovered food allergy (dairy , from a mental health med she was taking) uses this origins product and said she’s noticed a massive difference in the noticeability of her acne scarring ! she doesn’t typically like paying a whole bunch for makeup/skincare but she absolutely swears by this so you can always try it !! she said it only took a couple weeks to a month for her to see big results ! :)
wait… do you know what med it was because i thought i got cystic acne out of the blue within the past year but i got prescribed some new mental health meds so i’m wondering if that might be the reason
You would get a lot better results for less money with a prescription product like tretinoin or hydroquinone. Plus a doctor can evaluate the scarring and personalize the product and dosage for you instead of just experimenting with expensive skincare that may or may not have any effect.
Haha, I’m not stoned, just have allergies.
So I just finished the last of my current serum routine and I’m looking to maybe switch to something new. I just purchased buffet with copper peptides so I’ll be incorporating that somewhere.
AM: Cleanser - cetaphil Serum - Sunday Riley CEO Vitamin C Eyes - Algenist eye renewal balm Moisturizer - Derma-e skin restore moisturizer Suncare - I alternate between like four different sunscreens from Coola to Supergoop
PM: (If I wore makeup I’ll do an oil cleanse) Cleanser - cetaphil Toner (?) - Pixi glow peel pads 20% glycolic acid Eye cream - Algenist eye renewal balm And then I alternate between tretinoin 0.05% and Sunday Riley good genes lactic acid Moisturizer - derma-e skin restore moisturizer And then I use cerave skin renewing night cream almost as an occlusive.
I just started doing at home microneedling with a dr pen m6. I’m only on the second month and I’ve only worked up to 1mm on my cheeks, everywhere else is .25 to .75.
I used to alternate between chemical peels and microderm monthly and it helped with overall appearance of my skin, but didn’t do anything for my pit scarring, so I stopped doing that. My fingers are crossed for microneedling.
I loved Sunday Riley’s ceo serum but have ethical issues with supporting their company so I’m looking for another holy grail vitamin c, a new moisturizer and literally any recommendations you’ve got. Starting fresh so I’m open and my skin isn’t super sensitive!
Thanks for your help!!
CE ferulic from skinceuticals is a miracle worker. I haven’t had any luck with Sunday Riley at all. But with scarring like that I would suggest laser treatments.
Have you tried any sonage serums??? In one application I saw a huge difference w the collagen boost serum. I used the mask I ordered with it before applying -ill have to come back w the name but I know it's something plant stem cell. AMAZING RESULTS. Im also using awake AHA superstar which I love.
I really like Melano CC vitamin C serum, it's shelf stable.
If your skin is used to tretinoin, you can use it in the same routine as the Good Genes. Space them 30 minutes -1 hour apart.
I absolutely adore bluh alchemy’s vitamin c. I got it in a monthly box so I’ve never pulled the trigger with the actual price tag but I do feel that product made a significant impact on my scarring (I deal more with pigmentation with my scarring rather than pitting). I also love Yuli cell perfecto PM. 1 bottle lasts about 10 months for me and it also has significantly improved the quality of my skin
Tretinoin and microneedling. I’ve been using both so I’m not sure which one is working but my acne scars have gone down quite a bit in a year of using both. I get microneedling done every 3 months and it’s about $100. It also helps with anti-aging.
You have lovely skin! There isn't much we can do for scars at home, unfortunately. They can be very difficult to treat. See a professional for micro needling treatments
Tretinoin can help.
Speaking from experience of using Tret for four+ consistent years, I saw overall skin texture, it did not remove my acne scarring. I think scarring like this requires professional treatment
Agreed. Resurfacing treatments/fractal laser, more invasive is needed than at home products can (safely) achieve!
You look gorgeous. The scars are really really minimal. I understand they may seem really noticeable for you. They are not that way to me. I have seen great results on others for the microneedling, but you have great skin, you are a beautiful woman. You may not need to go through with all that pain.
Been struggling to find and choose a skincare product(or three) that help best with acne scars and hyperpigmentation..
Does anyone know any good products? Maybe some that don't break the bank?

Differin for me or topical retinol. Dermarolling really helped me too
Ooh, these sound real promising. Will be trying out the Differin. Thank you!
Faded topicals is so gooood
As a retired product junkie who worked in the salon/spa industry (admin) for 10 years, I am now pretty minimal when it comes to skincare. I cleanse and moisturize twice daily (cetaphil cleanser & dieux instant angel moisturizer). SPF daily - elta MD tinted (don’t love it - using until I’m out then changing).
I’d love to find a product that helps with my uneven skin tone due to acne scaring. I know lasers and treatments may be more beneficial but I don’t have the time or means right now. I am 16 months postpartum and my skin is just so dull too. I feel like I finally don’t have super active breakouts though. It’s making me feel like absolute crap.
TIA!
Tretinoin(prescription)is life changing, look into it! You can also get Retinol which is OTC from Amazon. I also have a friend that has acne and acne scars and she took accutane(isotretinoin) and it fixed it.
Thanks!! My dermatologist just sent in a script for it. A little nervous but so excited to see if it works for me!
Yay that’s exciting! Things get worse before they get better. It’s something you wanna apply for couple of months to notice huge transformation, just make sure you follow your dermatologist’s instructions especially how often you’re supposed to apply it and not too close to the eyes. It’s the only highly effective anti aging med alongside sunscreen, the others are a bit of a scam ngl. Best of luck!
I second tret! I suffered with acne for years and have some scarring like tiger! My face has never been smoother! Helps with fine lines too!
Thanks! Just got a script!
18M. I’ve used all sorts of skincare products over the years but I’ve never had a specific routine. To my knowledge: cleanser -> toner -> some sort of serum -> benzoyl or salicylic acid (?) -> moisturizer and occasionally face masks
They’re still ‘fresh’ and you’re still young. Go to a dermatologist and they can recommend you a type of micro needling.
100% worth it. They’ll heal faster when you’re younger and earlier can help prevent other acne building up.
besides all the things that have been said, affordable things that helped for me were vitamin c masks and rice masks
IPL and co2 laser will work perfect!
Deep scars like that can be be dealt with by laser or dermarolling. The small punctures or superficial burns basically produce collagen to fill the pits. I'd encourage seeing a dermatologist, a licensed medical professional and not going to a cosmetic or esthetic clinic, to make sure it's done properly
Edited for fat thumb typing errors
So I have the exact same scarring. The things that have worked for me (with help from a dermatologist)
face wash that actually helped my scarring and acne was Epionce Lytic Gel cleanser. When my skin is dry, I use Skinfix instead
compounded Tretinoin. the OG gel/creams just made my skin worse. A local compounded pharmacy made me one that has niacinamide, tretinoin, and hyaluronic acid emulsion. I also have one tretinoin with estradiol but I’m not sure how that would work for you
compounded Azelaic acid. I have tried OTC AZA and nothing helped. My compounded AZA is a mix of AZA, glycolic acid, and niacinamide. It’s helped not only the scarring but also acne.
vitamin C. I struggled with this because it always broke me out. The only two that haven’t are Alastin vitamin C (very expensive) or Sungboon editor Vitamin C. I prefer Sungboon for the price but ALSO!!! It has TXA, also helping my scarring.
good moisturizer and lots of sunscreen!!!
I have tried Microneedling several times, and it did not help. It gave me broken capillaries and now I’m going to do lasers to help them fade. I have also done chemical peels several times. RLT is also working for me.
I also do a lot of soothing rice masks which help brighten and soften my face.
I still have a few of those scars left, but most are gone. The Vbeam laser is my next step, alongside continuing my current routine.
Good luck!! You’re so young, your skin will get better before you know it with proper care
Hey all!
I’ve been having severe acne since the age of 13-14 and now I’m 22. After a long struggle, My acne has subsided but it left behind a lot of rolling and box scars (shallow) even on my nose. Will anybody suggest me good products that’ll help minimise them? (ps I’m getting lasers and micro needling done) but it’s way too expensive to get it done often so if there’s any product (even if it’s a tad expensive, I’m willing to invest) that’ll help I’ll be forever grateful ❤❤
Tazret forte cream.

Hi guys
What serum would you reccomend for someone who has brown skin and dark acne scars from popping spots which also led to hyperpigmentation?
I would need a product where I can see noticeable affects in about 3 months before I go abroad.
My skin isnt that sensetive so I am open to all strengths.
Many thanks for your help!
I’ve been using Theramid Azid for the past 3-4 months and the change is incredible. I looked like a poppy seed bun and now it’s barely noticeable.
Hi there, are there any other products you'd recommend from Niche Beauty Lab? Thanks in advance. :)
Just googled Theramid Azid and I am definitely going to buy this. Thank you!
Beauty of Joseon -Glow Deep Serum OR Some by mi - Yuja Niacin Antiblemish serum
I’ll try these out. Thank you!
Something like BBL laser would be the best way to go to reduce pigmentation, along with topicals like prescription hydroquinone
I have heard the same before. Will look into it. Thank you
VitaminE get it as close to pure as you can in liquid form. AMAZING! I had 3 children and 0 stretch marks.
Keep in mind acne scars take a long time to fade, 3 months is not impossible but can be a really high standard with topicals.
If you’re looking for efficiency try professional treatments like microneedling or chemical peels
A few months ago, I had a random breakout and the acne scars are still hanging around. I’ve been using Mederma PM scar cream, plus vitamin C and salicylic acid regularly. I also apply a niacinamide spot treatment to target the scars. It’s helped a bit, but they’re still pretty noticeable. I’ve had mostly clear skin through my 20s, so this has been a bit frustrating. Also, probably not helping, I don’t drink nearly enough water. 😅
If anyone has tips or products that helped with acne scarring, I’d love to hear them!
Sunscreen helps most and the ingredient that will target spots is azelaic acid.
thank you!! i don't wear sunscreen when i'm indoors most of the day but i'll start using it and reapplying every day even indoors
I would recommend visiting a dermatologist for a targeted solution. Also, not sure if you are talking about hyperpigmentation or acne scarring (eg: ice pick scars etc.). Azelaic acid, alpha arbutin help along with retinol, ahas, bhas help with hyperpigmentation but scarring might require procedures prescribed by dermatologist.
Sorry for the confusion I’m talking about acne scarring but the scars are brownish as in tiny spots darker than my skin tone all over one side of my face. I got a few pimples there around 5ish months ago but the scars are still there
No worries, I understand - I really think it might be worth visiting a good dermatologist. I know it can be hard sometimes to find a good one sometimes - but once you do it saves a lot of money, effort and experimentation. Saying this because I’ve been there - I wouldn’t recommend experimenting at this point as it could sometimes worsen the problem.
So I love neutrogena scar cream and there redness reduction, stubborn marks, and there spot treatment. My scars have reduced.
Thank you ! But I need a makeup product like a concealer or skin tint
Hi ! I have oily acne prone skin and my skin is actually improving now after trying and figuring out my Skincare routine… Anyways, I have stopped using foundation and so is there any product that I could use to cover my acne scars ? Or maybe even out and help my skin look natural ? Any skin tint or concealer recommendations would be great 🥹 Thank you so much !
I had scars like this and the only thing that helped me was retinol. You can get a prescription now through places like Nurux for like $90, sounds like a lot but you use very little and have to work your way into it over time so it will last you a long time.
I liked and still like Ila with my textured skin because it’s light and natural and doesn’t make me break out, maybe it would work for you!
Clinique line smoothing concealer
Drop dead fŭcking gorgeous 😍 😍
