TL;DR Start with character-focused runs or standalone series like Ultimate Spider-Man, Marvels, and Daredevil by Frank Miller. Consider using Marvel Unlimited for access to a wide range of comics.
Character-Focused Runs
Many commenters recommend starting with specific character runs that are well-regarded and accessible for newcomers. For Spider-Man fans, Ultimate Spider-Man by Brian Michael Bendis is highly recommended as it provides a fresh take on the character and aligns with the MCU vibe [1:5]
[5:4]. Daredevil has multiple acclaimed runs, including those by Frank Miller and Brian Michael Bendis, which are praised for their storytelling
[1:1]
[2:1]. Captain America by Ed Brubaker is another excellent choice, offering a compelling narrative
[2:1].
Standalone Series and Graphic Novels
Standalone series like Marvels by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross provide an overview of the Marvel universe through the eyes of ordinary people, making it a great entry point [1:1]. The History Of The Marvel Universe by Mark Waid is also recommended for those looking to understand the broader strokes of Marvel lore
[1:1].
Subscription Services
For beginners who want to explore a wide range of stories without buying individual issues, Marvel Unlimited is a popular recommendation. It offers digital access to thousands of comics, allowing readers to explore different characters and storylines at their own pace [2:3]
[4:2].
Exploring Interests
It's important for new readers to consider what they want from their comic reading experience. Whether it's exploring deep lore, following ongoing adventures, or enjoying self-contained stories, there's no wrong way to start [5:2]. Picking up comics that feature characters you already love from the MCU can be a natural starting point
[3:3].
Additional Recommendations
Other notable mentions include Hawkeye by Matt Fraction, Iron Man by Matt Fraction, and New X-Men by Grant Morrison [1:2]. These series offer engaging narratives and are often cited as beginner-friendly due to their modern storytelling and character development.
Yooo.. Guys
'm super new to comics and trying to build a reading habit, but wow, the Marvel universe is huge! 😅 I’m looking for recommendations on the best Marvel comic to start with as a beginner. I love the MCU movies (Spider-Man and Guardians are my faves), but I’ve never really dove into the comics before.
What’s a great series or standalone that’s easy to follow, has awesome characters, and maybe feels a bit like the MCU vibe? I’m open to anything—modern, classic, or even graphic novels. Also, any tips for a newbie on how to keep up with the lore or not get overwhelmed by all the crossovers and timelines?
Any advice or Tips and Tricks would be awesome! Thanks in advance for helping a comic noob out
Ultimate spider man by brian michael bendis.
Avengers by kurt busiek.
New avengers by Brian michael bendis (look for a reading order online for this one, as it involves several different comic books).
Daredevil by brian michael bendis, followed by daredevil by ed Brubaker (these essentially tell one story).
Alias by brian michael bendis (Jessica Jones makes her debut here).
Captain America by Ed brubaker.
New X-Men by grant Morrison.
Astonishing X-Men by joss whedon.
Punisher max by garth ennis.
Iron man by matt fraction.
Hawkeye by matt fraction.
Immortal iron fist by matt fraction and ed brubaker.
Guardians of the Galaxy by abnett and lenning.
Side Note: these suggestions are not necessarily the best comics based on their respective characters (though imo, many of them are, if not all), but they are what i would consider to be the most new reader friendly entry points possible. Also most of these are what the movies take inspiration from.
if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
This list, this is how the first few comics I read when I initially was interested 15 years ago and googled what were good marvel comics to read online
Immortal Iron Fist by Brubaker
Daredevil by Frank Miller
Daredevil by Garth Ennis
Fantastic Four by Hickman
Hawkeye by Fraction and Aja
Avengers Forever by Kurt Busiek
The best tip is to follow good writers. Following a character is usually not recommended, as there are tons of bad stories of Spider-man or whatever. That’s why I mentioned some of the best for Marvel above.
Not sure Garth ever wrote daredevil, maybe you meant punisher?
Ah, yeah, that’s right. The one where he embarrasses DD. Welcome Back Frank
Try Brian Michael Bendis’ Ultimate Spider-Man from 2000, you can then dive into the original Ultimate Universe which a lot of the early MCU was influenced by.
Start with the current run of Fantastic Four by Ryan North.
Marvels by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross would be an excellent starting point in my opinion.
The History Of The Marvel Universe by Mark Waid and Javier Rodriguez is also excellent, for broad strokes.
Dan Slott and Mike Allred’s Silver Surfer run is great.
Daredevil is consistently one of the best written characters in all of their comics. There are so many great runs of that character that you could pick from. Frank Miller is the first writer whose run on the character is massively acclaimed.
While some people find them to be dated, the original runs of The Amazing Spider-Man and Fantastic Four hold up, in my opinion. Reading them now almost feels like reading classic literature.
Beside these recommendations, other people here in the comments have given you a whole bunch of great recommendations that I did not want to be redundant in repeating
Don't mind which comics. I absolutely love Captain America, Iron Man, Spider Man, Daredevil.
I'm open for other comics. I've realised that I can spend money on comics when I get paid and want to do this.
Those are great starts I like the old marvel team ups, also power man and Iron Fist. I also recommend going outside the marvel world and try a independent as well. It is a good way to find out more of what you like and what you don’t
Check the sidebar as Jarvis said. Also you are definitely going to want to get Marvel Unlimited instead of buying individual issues constantly. I highly recommend Marvels 0-4 personally for first ever issues.

House of X and Powers of X
This times a thousand. So good.
Starter runs:
Amazing Spider-Man (1999) #30-58 + Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #500-545 by JMS
Captain America (2005) #1-50 by Brubaker
Daredevil (1998) #16-20, #26-50, #56-81 by Bendis
Invincible Iron Man (2008) #1-33 + #500-527 by Matt Fraction
I am thinking about getting a subscription to the Marvel.com site and reading their comics, but i don't really know where to start.
I am primarily familiar with the MCU and the animated tv shows that have come out since the mid 1990's, but i haven't really delved deep into the histories of the characters and i've never read a comic.
I would be interesting in some good comics/series that could serve as a springboard into the Marvel comics universe and which could set up the world and characters.
Thank you!
It really depends on who you're interested in, and whether you like the style of old comics or not.
If you DO enjoy the older style, claremont's x men is stellar. As is early days of fantastic four and spiderman.
If you don't vibe with the old style (which is totally fine, I started out with it but nowadays can't stand it), here are some reccs.
X men:
New x men 2004 and/or astonishing x men by whedon, current from the ashes era books, The krakoa era is great but its better if you already know a little more about the X world.
Avengers:
Start at Avengers Dissasembled and read from there, or hickman's avengers and new avengers leading up to secret wars. its a great read.
Fantastic Four:
My FAVORITE book on the current shelves is Fantastic Four by Ryan North. It technically just "ended" but is starting again with a new #1 still from North this month so its not really over. HIGHLY reccomend. Its a great intro to the FF as long as you have barebones knowledge of the team.
The Waid and Hickman runs are also spectacular.
Spiderman:
There are a million spidey runs and a lot of them are very dependent on your taste. My absolute favorite is spectacular spiderman but I'm not sure its the best one for a new reader....Its been so long since I read a good spiderman comic that wasn't super tied up in continuity like the spiderverse stuff, maybe someone else can chime in with spidey reccs.
The advice I heard that I’ve started to follow to get into comics from the MCU is pick a character or two and start with the comics from there. So I started with the Captain America Winter Solider comics and the Wanda/Scarlet Witch comics. A lot of the more popular MCU characters have comics that are compiled into a bigger omnibus that may be a good place to start too.
What i recommend is looking up when an arc ended/reset happened and pick if you want to read it or not. Like the reset after secret wars
U want something to pull u in and think wow this is what comics are. So I’d say Thanos wins
Here are some reading orders if you are interested...
I wrote Spider-Man recommendations here!
I wrote Fantastic Four recommendations here!
I wrote a Daredevil reading order here!
I wrote a X-Men reading order here!
And I wrote an Avengers reading order here! Spider-Man joins the team in this era!
You can read everything on Marvel Unlimited. A great option if you have a tablet!
There's also your local library or their digital Hoopla service. Free options!
Have fun!
I'm one of those casual fans that find certain parts/characters of Marvel very interesting, but have never dove deep into the lore, or any particular subject.
I know there's no definitive way to start, but any soert of direction would be great! I'm looking for something that I could hopefully share with my brother who is still a kid.
I find most Marvel characters relatively interesting, but have really had my interest piqued by Spiderman, Magik, Blade, Black Panther, Iron Fist, and the X-Men. I will definitely still consider recommendations that don't include these protagonist but hopefully it will help point the way towards something fun and interesting :)
I also have no issue if the comics is dated or new, whatever is good is all I ask haha. Thanks all who advise or respond in advance!
Your LCS (local comic store) is your first stop
Folks there know their stuff & will be happy to guide you
If you'd rather not speak to anyone though, just pick up whatever books look good to you
It's OK to judge these ones by the covers!
Head for marvel.com if reading comics digitally is more your speed (look for Marvel Unlimited)
If you like X-Men '97 - X-Men Epic Collections Vol #19-23 Update: I Gotta mention X-Men Visionaries Jim Lee book. There's some issues in that collection that are relevant. This book is to be read before the Epic Collections that I've listed.
All that I've listed are good starting points, but from what I've read, starting from the very beginning is never bad.
I recommend these books if you want to start reading Black Panther
Okay, so the best way to do this is pick a character and get a suggested 'run' (thats a bunch of issues/series by a specific writer/artist). Sounds like you played Midnight Suns, eh? :). Below are collected editions you should find easily at a comic store and/or online.
Hope that helps!
Hey everyone, Ive watched all the Marvel movies and series, and now I really want to get into the comics. But the thing is Ive never read a single comic book in my life, not even from other franchises. So Im completely new to this.
Where should I start? Are there any beginner friendly storylines or characters you would recommend? Any tips or beginner guides would be really helpful. Thanks in advance.
Have a little think about what “getting into comics” means to you. Are you looking to
There’s lots of ways to be “into comics”… and they’re all Correct.
What you should do, which recommendations you should be given, and how you should start and approach things depends on what you WANT out of the experience!
The answer will always be some variation of “You just start reading” (almost all Marvel is beginner friendly except a few eras of X-Men), but more specific recs depend on what “getting into comics” means to you.
Explore the deep lore of characters you like?
Follow the currently ongoing adventures and doings in Marvel Universe?
This is what Im mainly expecting by reading comics.
Start reading what interests you. Comic universe is not one consistent story that you can catch up to, it's a legitimate universe where things are constantly happening in 20 places at once. The best way to hop on the train is to jump, because it isn't stopping for anyone. You can start wherever you like, and if you don't like it just go to different book. Any necessary details and things that happened before will be more clear with time, or you can just google it. It's like meeting a new friend — you can't experience their past with them anymore, but you can get to know about it and make new experience
I started with Ultimate Spiderman (the old one from 2001) and i can only recommend it alot! Its very much his origin story and all, can be read without anything else and your movie knowledge will help alot!
and its agreed on by marvel fans to be one of the best comics existing
Pick up a comic that looks interesting to you and start there.
There's honestly the best way to start, you don't need to treat it like a project or homework,
What are characters your interested in reading
Ironman, Daredevil, Spiderman , Captain America, Dr doom
Daredevil, Spidey, and cap all have great stories written by author Chip Zdardky. Daredevil (2019), Spider-Man: Life Story, and current Captain America run that started awhile back
There was a series called Marvel Colours by Jeph Loeb & Tim Sale that were retrospective on the early years of a character as the look back with rose tinted glasses of their pass and how they lost someone very important to them. Slider-Man: Blue is about Gwen Stacy, Daredevil: Yellow is about Karen Page, and Captain America: White is about Bucky.
The current Ultimate Universe has Captain America and Doom (tho not the usual version of Doom) on a team, in The Ultimates by Deniz Camp and Ultimate Spider-Man by Jonathan Hickman follows Peter as a middle-aged family man whose now just getting his powers.
Other recs outside of that:
Books of Doom by Ed Brubaker
Trimpth & Torment by Roger Stern
Captain America by Ed Brubaker
Hey guys, I’m just getting in to comics and was wondering what are some great comics to start out with? Thanks!
What characters/heroes/villians do you enjoy? Start something that sparks your interest. Dont worry to much about the Writer or artist. Focus on what you find enjoyable. Once I learned more about the universe in general, I picked up a few random issues here or there that sparked my interest. And stuck with a few key writers or artists with which I enjoyed their work. Fast forward and you'll soon be picking up a random assortment of stuff just because you enjoy it. You just have to search for what you enjoy. Or what you want to collect.
I like Spidey, Venom, Cable, Wolverine, Thanos and as a team overall the X-Men. And thanks so much for the tips!
Try Thanos Wins by Donny Cates
I hate them x men movies because I love love the comics so you should read god loves man kills. I don’t think it’s to difficult to hop into it’s old also some spider man is cool to hop into basically anything he has lol
. I’ll be sure to check that out! Thanks so much!!
Welcome lol
Kraven's Last Hunt is good, and is something you will want to read as a Marvel fan anyway.
Civil War, obviously, and then follow it up with World War Hulk.
Try the new Venom Run for Venom, it’s by Donny Cates
I strongly recommend All New Wolverine. It was the first Marvel series I read all the way through and I loved it.
Hi guys! I’m Very new to marvel. Grew up in Asia so Japanese comics were all i had. I’m fascinated with Marvel and I would love to dive into that universe and understand all the backgrounds of every one. Where should I start? Thanks a million!
Well, who's your favorite hero?
Captain America. Seconded by Thor.
For Thor, there's no better place to start than "God of Thunder" by Jason Aaron and go from there.
For Cap, the 2005 run by Ed Brubaker is a good intro because it covers the Winter Soldier storyline.
ETA: Wrote Rick Remender at first but the author is Ed Brubaker.
Look up recommended reading for those two and start there!
Thank you so much!
Have fun :) Oh and another tip, if your near a library they usually have a surprising selection of comicbooks. Also, the libraries in my state let you order material from any other library in the state. So check out your local library before you start spending money on comics you'll only read once.
I started with Old Man Logan and it's awesome.
It really depends upon what you like. But if you want to start from the beginning, I might recommend Uncanny X-Men, Fantastic Four, of The Amazing Spiderman. They were written in the 60's and have some of Marvel's most popular storylines, arcs, and characters. You can probably find them online to read relatively easily.
Thanks for the advice! I wanted to read the originals and the vintage. I just appreciate that kinda of humor more.
I recently read some of Uncanny X-Men, and I can definitely tell you that it's worth it. They can be a bit cheesy, but they are very well written and some of the best arcs for the characters happened around then.
Thank you guys for your help! I really appreciate it!
Hi! I'm someone who would love to get into Marvel comics, and loves Deadpool and Spidey(sorry, I know I'm basic😭) could you please suggest me a good point to start reading Marvel comics to get into the whole universe?
Deadpool (2012) by Gerry duggan and his subsequent runs. Deadpool/Spider-Man by joe Kelly if you want a mix of both. Spider-Man depends if you like modern comics or classic comics old comics are more wordy and more for like kids if you wanna start with classic just go from Amazing Fantasy 15 and then forwards. If you want modern runs JMS' run is a good starting place which is Amazing Spider-Man (1999) #30 or Nick Spencer's run Amazing Spider-Man (2018) #1.
I better take notes! Deadpool/Spiderman seems like something I'll be very interested in. Are the Amazing Spiderman books like the movies? Because I've watched and enjoyed them. Thank you so much for you help, you're very kind :)
The comics are basically nothing like the movies but like if you like Raimi's movies def read the original Stan Lee run from Amazing Fantasty 15 all the way to Amazing Spider-Man #101 or read Spider-Man: Blue Raimi took a lot form that. The other movies i'm not a fan of because they don't really pull from comics as a whole. I would say Deadpool/Spider-Man is great for casual readers it's just a pretty fun story it's not one of the best of all time but it's worth a check! You can buy Marvel unlimited or find these online or at a local comic book store both Spider-Man: Blue and Deadpool/Spider-Man are easy to find they just printed new copies. For the orignal Stan Lee Spider-Man books you might have to take a look at The Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collection Vol 1 onwards.
If you like spidey and deadpool get spidey and deadpool comics,I reccomend 90s comics because I love the 90s comics.
I'll check it out. Thank you so much!
Duggan's Savage Avengers
I wrote Spider-Man recommendations here!
I also wrote an Avengers reading order here! Spider-Man joins the team in this era!
For Deadpool, read all the miniseries listed in this hardcover omnibus, and also the 2012 ongoing series
Have fun!
Thank you so much! I cannot wait to start :)

Well first off, i would ask you what characters do you wanna read about. Since i don't know this, i will give you entry level books that you can pick up without any prior knowledge.
All of these should be readily available via bookstores or you could read them alongside many other Marvel books via the online subscription service called Marvel Unlimited.

Beyonder: Secret Wars by Jim Shooter

I've watched and enjoyed alot of the MCU movies since I was 8 and now that I've been on a Marvel kick I'd like to actually read some of the comics, we're do I start. My favorite Marvel superheroes are Iron Man, Guardians of the galaxy, Deadpool, X-Men, and The Avengers.
Hawkeye vs. Deadpool (2014) is one of the best comics I've read and it's a great starting point, because it's only 5 issues long and it feels like a movie.
Guardians of the Galaxy (2020) by Al Ewing is a great run! It's a little longer, 18 issues, and it ends with The Last Annihilation series.
Thanks for the recommendations.
No problem! Also, Avengers is the hardest title to get into, because it's often interwoven with other comics, so you have to read a lot of other stuff.
I liked Avengers vs X-Men, Secret Invasion, Dark Avengers and Siege very much!
