TL;DR
Ergonomics and Design
The design of a massage gun can significantly impact its usability, especially when self-massaging difficult areas like the back. The Theragun's triangular handle is specifically noted for making it easier to reach around to one's back [1:2]. Users have found that this design allows for various hand positions, which can be more comfortable during use
[4:1].
Performance and Value
Several users have recommended the Bob and Brad massage gun for its excellent performance and value for money [3:1]
[5:1]. It has been highlighted in reviews and comparison videos for its effectiveness. Additionally, the NoCry massage gun from Amazon is mentioned as a good budget option, offering deep tissue massage capabilities at a lower price point
[5:3]
[5:8].
Budget Considerations
For those looking for a massage gun under $200, the Addaday BioZoom edge with Bluetooth was suggested [3:3]. Another user recommended considering models priced around $80 or less if they have good reviews, as they can provide targeted relief without being overly expensive
[5:4].
Effectiveness and Use
While massage guns are not a substitute for professional massage therapy, they can still be effective tools for muscle manipulation and circulation enhancement [4:2]. They are particularly useful for sensitive areas that are overused, as vibration can help alleviate pain
[4:4]. For those who dislike foam rolling, massage guns offer a convenient alternative
[5:10].
Additional Recommendations
Users have also expressed satisfaction with the Theragun mini for its compact size and effectiveness, especially for targeting specific muscle groups like the glutes [5:6]
[5:9]. Moreover, neck/shoulder Shiatsu massagers were recommended as complementary tools for areas that are hard to reach with a massage gun
[5:4].
Is there a handle design that makes it easier for one to massage your own back? I've seen the traditional gun shaped designs but there's also Theragun's triangular shaped handle design. Does it make it any easier to reach around to your back?
I have the mid level theragun and I got it for the handle. It’s very easy to hold in various ways. Target had it $50 off last Xmas
Handle doesn't make it easier. However, after buying 3...the theragun is far superior. Wait til December, costco usually gets them for less in time for xmas!
Tennis ball and smaller ball for more force. I have drugstore fake superballs that do the trick.
I got a Vibe Max from Amazon for about $30, but looking now the price has doubled.

The one with the hole.. for my.. muscle
I've had a bootleg massage gun (good rating) off aliexpress for like 60 bucks. It actually worked well for a couple of months before the battery life started depleting at an alarming rate till it eventually never turned back on.
I'm looking for the best massage gun, at a reasonable price of (under $200) that the battery/motor or whatever can last over a year at least so i don't have to replace them often.
Does such a thing exist?
I ordered one off this website Themassagetec.com
This one is really good
I’d check out the Addaday BioZoom edge with Bluetooth.
Thanks for the suggestion!
you can use promo code BMT for 10% off too
I just got one from a recommendation of a friend www.Bnathlete.life plus they got a good sale and discount on the product. On my opinion they are really good!
I came across this massage gun after reading MANY massage gun reviews. In particular, the youtube channel “BeforeYouBuy” did a great overview of the bob and brad massage gun and also did a comparison video where this one came out on top.
Preface: I am a kinesiologist. I was looking at purchasing a massage gun for a friend, but have been unable to find solid evidence for their application by anyone but a trained professional. I was hoping some RMT's might be will to way in.
Massage is about manipulating the muscles. Ideally with proper pressure and many other things we learn in school, but in the end, it just comes down to manipulating the muscles to boost circulation.
Massage guns manipulate the muscles, thereby stimulating circulation. No need for evidens beyond that. They work, albeit less effectively than an actual massage therapist, of course.
I have a cheapo model to help with post work (I’m an LMT) muscle stress. I use it on my hands, with a towel buffering it.
Several of my clients have bought them, and I’ve clarified not using above the clavicles, shown them the glancing/side angle around knees, elbows, etc. rather than the Jack hammer angle.
They love them, only one has had an issue (see clavicles).
The only model I’d have clients avoid is the old school buffer style.
What's the glancing angle?
I use the hypervolt. Because our brains pick up vibration before pain( why you shake your hand after you bang it accidentally on a table or something) it has very useful applications for sensitive area that are over used.
Anecdotal evidence, source me (M.S. exercise science & LMT)
They are nice but they don't save the world. Using it conjuction with active movement usually feels decent.
If you have 500 bucks to spend on whatever, try one out. Don't buy a cheap one. If that 500 dollars means alot, save your money and find a good LMT.
Edit: I have a theragun. Would recommend over the hypervolt because of the different hand position options.
Definitely agree with this. It can be useful, but it’s not more useful than an actual LMT that knows what they’re doing, especially if getting a good model is an investment.
I personally prefer the brookstone. It's the real deal.
I’ve been sore as heck with new lifting programming and I’m curious if anyone has noticed a difference from using the ever-so-popular massage guns that I keep seeing everywhere. If so - any recommendations?
Thanks!
They work great but they're not necessary if you're religious about massage balls and foam rolling. They're just more convenient and provide more targeted, less painful relief lol.
I wouldn't spend $200+ on one, but if you pick one up for like $80 or less with good reviews, go for it. I got mine for around that and I'm satisfied with it.
What I surprisingly also really like are the neck/shoulder shiatzu massagers. Does what you can't if you're just by yourself with theragun.
I got a link for a black friday $30 one I am thinking about. Not as powerful as those.
Edit: a Brads Deals link
I've got one that was originally $100 (half price for being a new amz item) and one that I paid maybe $40 for. The latter is more like a strong vibrator, the former actually punches you for a better deep tissue massage. Both work fine but there's definitely different classes of massage guns.
I have the NoCry from Amazon and I'm obsessed with it. It's great. I can't tell the difference between it and the Hypervolt (which my PT has) except for it being considerably cheaper.
about $180 NoCry massage gun from Amazon
I love my theragun! My lower back thanks me when I use it on my glutes.
Ugh this sounds like a dream.... like my glutes .... thighs and feet... I’d MELT!
I got a theragun mini for Christmas and I love it! I haven't looked at my foam rollers or lacrosse balls since I unwrapped that bad boy.
> theragun mini about $175
Ordered the Bob and Brad one after watching YouTube reviews. Can’t wait for it to arrive as i can’t stand foam rolling
Bob and Brad, the two most famous physical therapists on the internet
I love those two! Their videos have helped me with so many pains that have popped up over the years.
I purchased the Bob and Brad massage gun based on your review. I've not been disappointed. Thanks for the recommendation.
I am looking to buy my first massage gun. Any recommendations for a good one that’s not crazy expensive? Thanks!
The Bob and Brad massage gun - it's awesome 👍
Thanks! This looks to be on sale on Amazon. May be the one for me.
Just got one in the mail I'm really enjoying it so far.
I like my hypervolt.Game changer for me.I have a cheaper one that was ok but the hypervolt is strong for working on larger muscle.I just used it on my quad tendon .Though it is pricey.
I’m obsessed with my Theragun and recommend it to everyone. I hate foam rolling (not for any logical reason it ’s just annoying and I don’t like doing it) so definitely needed something to replace that, and it’s been excellent.
Which Hypervolt do you have if you don't mind me asking?
I'm looking into getting one right now too, and as of now trying to choose between the Hypervolt 2 and Hypervolt 2 Pro!
Thanks!
I’ve had mine for a few years so probably not the pro but it’s great if you can save some money.
I’ve been using it almost a year now, it is just as good as the really expensive ones. I compared it with my buddy’s theragun.
I use a Hyperice and it works for me. But also check Costco I’ve seen some good massage guns for $99. You might get lucky.
I bought the Bondir one on the Costco site and like it! $110 delivered, I think.
I almost posted a link to a dildo machine and then realized this was r/running lol having said that I got the Toloco off Amazon and it has performed nicely for 2 years now.
Medcursor massage Gun. It’s on Amazon for $60 usd
Hi there,
Strange request but I am looking for advice as to what massage gun is best based on bang for your buck. I see prices vary wildly, are the expensive ones worth it?
Thoughts? Thank you!!!
You can go with Hyperice Hypervolt 2 Pro but you can check this post https://www.reddit.com/r/Reviews/comments/1ccn9os/opinion_on_massage_guns/ for another opinions
That's why I bought the low-end Bob and Brad kit. It does the trick. It's solid and you get a complete set of attachments. My only complaint is that you can't buy the heated head attachments separately. For a heated massage gun, we ended up buying the cheapest Hypervolt and their heated head attachment separately. With the heat attachments, you really don't need a lot of pressure anyways and it's still pretty light even with the attachment.
I've tried a few models of Theragun and I've tried $50 amazon ones. Save your $50, they won't do a damn thing. The best is the cheapest theragun option. Especially if you can wait for a sale. I knew we'd put it through paces, so I personally bought the cheapest version Theragun that uses the strongest motor. But their little guy, the very cheapest model they have is still amazing.
I hear HyperIce is the only real competitor for the quality, but I haven't tried one.
my vote goes to bob and brand as well
I've been using the Turonic GM5 massage gun for about a month and it's actually insane how good it works. The build quality is also solid.
I'm almost 40 and never had a massage in my life. On a whim I added this to my shopping basket to bump up the price. Jesus. Let me tell you. 10 minutes with this gun and after I felt like melting into the bed. It stung soo bad in areas that I never knew were sore. But it was worth it, it was glorious 🥹. Im so tired now I feel like a lil nap ha.
My ex bought me a plug-in vibrator before. It was like taking a power tool to your clit, way too much.
They usually have a button for different power levels 😂
It did! Even the lowest was like "WOAAHAAHHHHHH".
Like the episode of ginny and georgia where she got off using a toothbrush?
https://i.redd.it/wynsff81dshf1.gif
Sure, sure. The best "massage" ever.
Hahaha, this ones the best 😆
This made me laugh so much 😹😹
Then my job here is done 😂
He's the ex because he got replaced by it
RIP your inbox.
I have had the same one for about a year. Solid. Battery lasts for ever. I use constantly.
We own one of the expensive ones. We rarely use it. For me it doesn't get deep enough to release anything. Bummer considering how much we spent on ours.
Want to sell it? I'm looking for a theragun. DM me if interested in selling.
Go on ebay and find one. I bought some off brand years ago just like this for around $40 new . It works just as well as it did the first day. Mine came with 4 different head attachments as well
How is this different from the $39 on Amazon?
The higher in price you go, the longer the stroke, the more powerful the motor, and the more pressure you can apply before the motor stalls out.
You also may get more variable speeds, more attachments, better battery, better warranty, etc.
“The higher in price you go, the longer the stroke…”
Lol, story of my life.
I bought a cheap one on Amazon and it died quickly. But, not quickly enough to return it. Costco has a great return policy if this one craps out.
No idea. I havent tried any other. I will say my friends bought one at a specialty store in Mall of America for $300 and it's the same quality as this one.
Tip: Use it on your car carpet floor when vacuuming. Really gets everything moving to vacuum up!
That’s how much I paid for mine when I bought one a few years ago when my buddy showed me his $199 model that was literally identical.
PSA: You should be able to use FSA money on these! You can submit a receipt and ask for reimbursement.
I just got the Hypervolt Go 2 since it’s USB C but it doesn’t seem that powerful. What’s the most powerful massage gun that’s USB C?
I've got the Theragun Mini and it charges perfectly with USB-C.
Feels pretty powerful to me, but I don't have anything to compare against.
Theragun Prime Gen 5
Do you mean the Pro gen 5?
I have the Prime Gen 5 and can confirm USB-C charging works as expected.
Looking at the Theragun site, it seems the Pro Gen 5 and Pro Plus Gen 6 come with USB-C chargers so I'd assume they should work as well. They have similar amplitude but stall force rating is higher. The pressure screen is missing on the Prime but it's something you can learn with use (and you can also see it via Bluetooth + App but I found that the connection is flaky).
idk about most powerful, but Kica makes awesome massagers that are v strong and like half the size of competitors. also c-to-c confirmed
best massage gun
Key Considerations for Choosing a Massage Gun:
Power and Speed Settings: Look for a massage gun with multiple speed settings (at least 3-5) to customize the intensity based on your needs. Higher RPMs (up to 3200) can provide deeper muscle relief.
Battery Life: A good massage gun should have a battery life of at least 2-3 hours on a full charge. Quick charging capabilities can also be a plus.
Weight and Portability: Consider the weight of the massage gun, especially if you plan to travel with it. A lightweight model (around 2-3 lbs) is easier to handle and transport.
Attachment Heads: Different attachments (e.g., flat, round, bullet) can target various muscle groups and provide different types of massage. Look for a model that includes a variety of heads.
Noise Level: Some massage guns can be quite loud. Look for models that operate quietly (under 60 dB) for a more pleasant experience.
Recommendations:
Theragun Elite: Known for its powerful motor, adjustable speed settings, and ergonomic design. It offers a quiet operation and a long battery life (up to 120 minutes). It's ideal for serious athletes or anyone needing deep muscle relief.
Hypervolt 2: This model is lightweight, has a sleek design, and operates quietly. It features multiple speed settings and a long battery life, making it great for everyday use.
TimTam Power Massager: Offers a unique heated attachment for added muscle relaxation. It's powerful and effective for deeper tissue massage, but it can be a bit heavier.
Takeaway: Choose a massage gun that fits your specific needs, whether that's deep tissue relief, portability, or quiet operation. The Theragun Elite and Hypervolt 2 are excellent choices for their performance and features.
