ORIGINAL POST

My 3 most-played iPhone games ever, and they‘re still in heavy rotation:

Rogue Touch: an old port of original Rogue, made for touch, and with some additions like new gear and secret characters. Easy to play, incredibly hard to beat (I probably will never make it to floor 26 and back). Timeless classic.

Meteorfall: developer Slothwerks took the brilliant Dream Quest (aka the OG deckbuilder), stripped it to its core, added some fantastic art, and changed gameplay to a swipe-based gem, that‘s to this day one of the coolest deckbuilders ever.

Buriedbornes: an easy to play (tap, tap, tap) turn-based RPG with TONS of loot, characters and content. I‘ve been playing for years, but still only scratched its surface. Also, I absolutely love the sprite art used in this game.

Links to the games in the comments. What are your most-played games? Any hidden gems or guilty pleasures?

Hi BeeJacob, I can try to help... Long-time Reddit lurker and developer of Rogue Touch here, always find it fun to see mentions of my game after 16 years of being on the App Store :)

If you are seeing a crash when trying to start a New Game (before the keyboard pops up asking for your character name), can you check which "keyboards" you have selected?

To do this: Go into the iPhone Settings App, then General, then Keyboards. Then go into Keyboards (X), which shows all active Keyboards. Certain "non-roman" keyboards may trigger a crash when Rogue Touch attempts to pull up the name entry keyboard. Having Thai and Arabic keyboards in this list are confirmed to trigger the crash. Chinese, Japanese, and Korean keyboards seem to be OK, but there may be other keyboards that cause trouble.

If you don't need one of those non-roman language keyboard for your daily use, you can remove that specific keyboard and "New Game" will function correctly.

Rogue Touch is amazingly compatible all the way back to iOS8 (and actually the code would work all the way back to iOS3 if Apple hadn't forced me to raise the minimum level back in 2017!). Unfortunately some odd issues have come up recently, like this non-roman keyboard issue.

If iOS 26 doesn't resolve the problem when it is released in a couple weeks, please know that I have a big rewrite planned for 2026 which will modernize Rogue Touch for large iPhone screens, full iPad compatibility, and address odd iOS related bugs like this.

Slay the Spire handily beats any other game for playtime. Balatro is up there next to it, but both Dysmantle and Dead Cells are catching up.

Bought Luck based on what I read here and love it. At first it seemed like a stupid boring game but it’s so fun and perfect to kill few mins here and there.

hpph9 · 1 month ago

For me, those games are Dead Cells, Dream Quest, and Wildfrost. Dead Cells stands out as one of the best roguelike games on the App Store, thanks to its perfect balance of various elements and transparency. Dream Quest offers deep strategic gameplay, although it's quite challenging - I haven't managed to clear 3rd floor yet. As for Meteorfall Journey, I still play it but not as frequently as before, mainly focusing on daily ranking challenges. Despite being stuck at difficulty level 1.4, I've lost motivation to play extensively.

silentrocco · OP · 1 month ago

I have also yet to clear floor 3 in Dream Quest. It‘s a super challenging game, but that‘s one of the reasons I keep coming back :)

And I have yet to try Wildfrost. And yes, Dead Cells is an absolutely incredible game in all aspects. But I prefer turn-based games in general, since my reflexes just aren‘t good enough to make it far.

5 upvotes on reddit
hpph9 · 1 month ago

I'm also quite bad at games that require reflexes, but I have to switch between different genres. If you can, give Wildfrost a try. It has high tactical value but maintains a good pace, so you won't get tired playing it. I prefer it over Krumit Tale. Playing Krumit Tale feels a bit slow, which makes me feel somewhat stressed. As for Dream Quest, the 3rd floor is full of monsters ready to take you down. The phoenixes hatch from eggs 2-3 times. OMG.

It’s one of those games where you have to learn how to build for it. You get info, your next run you use that info. You learn through failed runs what might be awaiting you, and you prepare for what you can. It has depth but unless you’re like a Magic the Gathering Pro Tour level deckbuilder, it takes time to dig into that depth. But once you do, it starts snowballing.

Chrono Trigger. FF6 and FF7 too. If you don't like JRPGs, Titan Quest needs to be on your list at least. Then there's Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape Torment and Neverwinter Nights.

Some fantastic mobile classics on your list, btw.

I'd add to that asking why you're hooked with BG2; for me one of the great things about it (and most subsequent Bioware games) is character interaction, which IWD where you create your whole party doesn't really have in the same way. (Planescape Torment is sort of the opposite direction there.)

Metacore (Merge Mansion) is Finnish. But Supercell (Tencent) is an investor. Not ownership, as far a I know, but the connection is there, but at least it's not straight up ownership (yet). It's kind of frustrating because Supecell used to be Finnish too. Europe just seems to like to sell its companies and own nothing.

I’m looking for a mobile game that feels like a full experience—not just a quick gacha, idle clicker, or something I pick up for 5 minutes. I want something I can actually grind, explore, or get lost in for a while.

Ex Astris is non-gacha story driven turn based rpg with original world and battle system. You can explore for resources, raise your unites go through plot, etc. Its from 2024 I think. Its premium so u must buy it. When u logged in once and updated the game you can go full offline and play even in a basement.

The only criticism I have of this game is it's Endgame Content, or lack there of. It's really just a complete the story and you're done type of game. Iirc, the Devs did say that they're planning something for it, but as far as I know, there's no new News about it yet...? Don't quote me on that, I haven't been keeping my self up to date with Ex Astris...

Even so, I think devs busy with another game rn, when its out - one can expect an update. But i wouldnt really count on this, coz this is pay-one-time game with no ingame purchases, so the only motivation for devs is thier honesty, thier new game tho may raise 100s of millions annually, so ya, there's a good chance if they really mentioned it.

As long as people dont bother with min maxing or comparing with others, gacha games are completely playable. Just play as it is and dont check dupe page 🤣

Most modern gacha games are easy and still beatable without collecting everything or dupe, and devs are aware of p2w repelling players as well. It just takes extra few days or week to beat compared to fully collected players because of extra farming period. That's it

What are your favorite mobile RPGs?

Posted by PsychoticChemist · in r/rpg_gamers · 5 years ago

Hey guys. I know mobile gaming probably isn’t the most popular topic here, but I’m currently quarantined with my girlfriend away from home and so I don’t have access to my PC. Thus, I’ve been doing a fair bit of mobile gaming lately (I’m using iOS on an iPhone X).

I’m mostly looking for either open world adventure RPGs, action RPGs, or hardcore isometric RPGs. MMOs are also welcome. I prefer games with tons of customization and character development, especially those where you can really customize your class and play style with tons of freedom. What are your personal favorites? Any thoughts/opinions/discussion is more than welcome and appreciated.

PS - some of my current favorites are Exiled Kingdoms, Anima ARPG, Adventure Quest 3D, and Arcane Quest Legends. Would love to find games similar to any of those.

The quality of the port overall is exceptional, but there ARE issues with using a touch interface instead of kb/m. BG1 works well enough, but generally speaking the more complex the combat encounter, the more difficult the interface is going to be--as it's difficult to juggle frequent pausing and ability usage. This mostly becomes a problem with BG2 and it's much higher-level play.

In general I'd say PSTEE is the best IE game to play on mobile due to the simplicity of its combat encounters.

Open to all, willing to buy

Posted by Jayleo33 · in r/iosgaming · 16 days ago

I’m back in the mobile game space after a very long hiatus. Infinity Blade was the last game I really sank my teeth into. Fast forward to now, I don’t have time to sit down with a console and play so I do it when I can on my phone.

I’ve been playing Last War and Little Farm Story because they were recommended and I fell for an ad, respectively. I dabble in just about everything but I want something fun, good to look at, and a long term time investment to once again get started on. The more addicting the better.

It doesn’t have to be idle but I’ve found those to be best for me given that I don’t know exactly when I’ll be able to sit for chunks of time.

Also willing to buy the game if it’s worth it.

Please help and thank you for any recommendations.

I didn’t like it when I started playing it either, I didn’t like the rush of it and I think my brain has gotten used to the auto hint tile wiggle in most standard match 3 games. A mobile game to conquer 'em all!

Posted by BasileusXX · in r/AndroidGaming · 5 months ago

Greetings fellas, I'm looking for a mobile game that could finally entertain me for more than a week.
I like gacha, Fantasy, RPG (both action and Turn Based), Strategy and 4X, but I'm open to everything as long as it is a quality game!
Some important factors:

  1. PvP: the more it is a core component the better it is.
  2. Progression: The more it is focused on you being a single char the better it is.
  3. MTs: are fine as long as it is not mandatory to eventually be competitive.
  4. Auto-Play: big no unless there is a nice strategy aspect behind it or other aspects of the game are amazing.
  5. Time Based Gameplay: (stamina, buildings taking days etc.) The less the better.
  6. Community: if the game has a nice active community is even better as I like complex games with a lot to discuss, and not just a community based on shabby random guilds you join with no flavour.
Bonus: I also like roleplaying, but I dunno if there is anything for that on mobile.
Well, if anyone could lead my lost soul to something I will finally appreciate I would be very glad, in the meanwhile have a nice day y'all! :D

I am not joking here but deep dive in the world of beautiful game of chess. Amazing community, great and funny content on YT, pure PvP, progression is about single character - YOU (analyze your previous games, watch tutorial, discussions on subreddit), no autoplay, play as many games as you want (no stamina ect), no MTs, also variety of modes (like atomic chess, puzzles, or random chess). You can use chess.com (freemium) or Lichess (free).

I'm sorry to answer so late after making my question, anyway I already play chess on chess.com by time to time, I'm still a newbie but I'm trying to expand my openings!
It is great but I'm looking for something more gamey I guess? Thanks for your time in answering me tho! I appreciate a lot and will for sure now try to be a better player ^^

I agree that Chess is great but its definitely not for everyone. It can be frustrating to play, if you don't actually study tactics and learn how to play early, mid and end game. It looks simple but has a lot of depth. You must learn to plan ahead more than 2 moves and not just for your own pieces but opponents as well, or you will be just moving pieces by gut feeling and occasionally win by luck and have no clue how that happened. So, it can be fun but road to it finally being fun is a chore. I rather watch good matches with explanation of each player's strategy, than play it myself.

As also a PC gamer when a game is playable on PC I always prefer to play it on PC as I would feel like I'm just playing a watered down version on mobile.
Thanks for the suggestion anyway, maybe it is particulary well made even for mobile, I'll try it even if to be honest it doesn't seem my cup of tea but who knows, prejudices are never good ^^

Vita Fighters, it's a mobile fighting game that plays like a real fighting game vs other mobile fgs. Give it a shot.

I played in the past some fighing games on mobile (my favourite on PC are Soul Calibur and MK) but always found 'em a bit boring in the long time, I will give Vita Fighters a try then! Thank you for your suggestion :3

Played it many years ago, sadly not my cup of tea in the end but I recognize that it is an amazing game indeed! Thank you for your suggestion maybe I will give it a second chance in the future :D

You might wanna try Farbo World – 3D Maze.

It’s not your typical gacha or 4X, but hear me out:

Fully free, no ads, no stamina timers.

Story-driven progression across different themed worlds (each with unique enemies, traps, and a boss).

No auto-play nonsense – it’s all about skill and movement.

Multiplayer included (Paint Rush, Race Craze, Battle Royale), so there’s some PvP fun too.

And yeah, the dev's building it out with real lore/worldbuilding vibes – not just skin-deep stuff.

It’s kind of a hidden gem that plays more like an indie adventure-puzzle maze with arcade roots, but it’s got that ‘just one more level’ grip.

Key Considerations for Mobile RPG Games:

  1. Gameplay Mechanics: Look for games that offer engaging combat systems, character progression, and exploration. Turn-based vs. real-time combat can significantly affect your experience.

  2. Story and World-Building: A compelling narrative and immersive world can enhance your gaming experience. Check reviews or gameplay videos to gauge the story depth.

  3. Graphics and Art Style: Visual appeal can vary widely. Choose a game with a style that resonates with you, whether it's realistic or stylized.

  4. Monetization Model: Understand if the game is free-to-play with in-app purchases, a one-time purchase, or subscription-based. This can affect your enjoyment and investment.

  5. Community and Support: Games with active communities and regular updates tend to have longer lifespans and more engaging content.

Top Recommendations:

  1. Genshin Impact:

    • Genre: Action RPG
    • Features: Open-world exploration, stunning graphics, and a gacha system for character acquisition. Regular updates add new content.
  2. Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition:

    • Genre: Action RPG
    • Features: A mobile adaptation of the popular console game, offering a condensed story with charming graphics and engaging gameplay.
  3. Raid: Shadow Legends:

    • Genre: Turn-based RPG
    • Features: Extensive character collection, strategic gameplay, and a strong community. It has a free-to-play model with in-app purchases.
  4. The Elder Scrolls: Blades:

    • Genre: Action RPG
    • Features: Dungeon crawling, town-building mechanics, and a familiar Elder Scrolls universe.
  5. Chrono Trigger:

    • Genre: Classic RPG
    • Features: A timeless story, turn-based combat, and multiple endings. It's a great choice for fans of classic RPGs.

Recommendation: If you're looking for a rich experience with a vast world to explore, Genshin Impact is highly recommended due to its free-to-play model and frequent updates. For a classic RPG experience, Chrono Trigger is a must-play.
