What Redditors are Saying

Best Modular Motorcycle Helmets

TL;DR

  • Popular choices: Schuberth C5, Shoei Neotec 2, and LS2 Valiant II.
  • Considerations include noise levels, fit with glasses, and safety standards.

Advantages of Modular Helmets

Modular helmets offer convenience, especially for those who wear glasses or need to communicate frequently. They allow riders to flip up the chin bar for quick breaks, fueling, or conversations without removing the helmet [1:3], [2:4]. This feature is particularly appreciated in hot weather, as it allows for better ventilation at stops [1:7].

Noise and Safety Concerns

While modular helmets are convenient, they tend to be noisier than full-face helmets due to their design [1:3], [5:5]. Some users express concern about the safety of the chin area in modular helmets compared to full-face models [4:4], [5:2]. However, many modular helmets meet safety standards like ECE and DOT, providing adequate protection for most riding conditions [5:5].

Popular Models and Recommendations

Several modular helmets have been recommended by users. The Schuberth C5 is praised for its comfort and integration with communication systems [1:6], [5:6]. The Shoei Neotec 2 is another popular choice, known for its quality and compatibility with communication devices [3:1], [5:4]. The LS2 Valiant II offers a good balance of features and affordability, though it may not be as quiet as other options [5:5].

Fit and Personal Preferences

Ultimately, the best helmet is one that fits well and meets your specific needs. It's important to try on different models to find the right fit, as comfort can vary significantly between brands and models [3:5], [5:11]. For those concerned about weight, some users suggest trying helmets on for an extended period to ensure they don't cause neck strain [4:4].

In conclusion, when choosing a modular helmet, consider factors such as noise levels, safety certifications, compatibility with glasses and communication devices, and personal comfort.

ORIGINAL POST

First off, let me think everybody in the group does give great advice. I’m looking to get a new helmet trying to decide if a modular one is worth it. I know they’re normally a little heavier. Any other negatives? Should I just get a regular full face helmet? Thanks In advance. Oh, it would be hot weather summer helmet FYI.

Found this out the hard way.

My modular helmet is perfect for short non-hyway trips. Convenience is king for these helmets. Super quick easy on and off, filling up just lift chin module up, taking a drink, dropping something off to someone who otherwise wouldn't be able to recognise you, cooling off at lights, chatting to the rider next to you etc.

However, in my experience, they don't block the wind noise as well and they don't block the wind chill either. I found the full face to be warmer and quieter. So for long fast highway stretches (where the convenience of the modular is non-existent), I take my full face, but 90% of the time I use my modular for convenience.

Hope this helps!

My first modular lid was a budget HJC and with that I've have agreed with everything you said.

But when I got the Schuberth C3, it was night and day. Far quieter and no draughts or cold to worry about. I have a full face Shoei for the track, but for everything else, the Schuberth is my go-to.

This is the first fact based reply to this post. They are noisier. I don’t understand where this idea comes from that they are less safe. As someone who has been in an accident on an interstate at highway speeds, I can tell you my cheap plastic modular that meets the ECE 22.06 standard did just fine. If anyone is interested, I ride with a cheap single color LS2 Strobe II helmet.

I do find my modular catches more wind noise, but I like the flip up feature for quick breaks. My buddy loved his Shark Evo because the chin bar can flip all the way over the top to make it a more rideable 3/4 helmet when he wanted to.

I live in hot humid Florida and I love my Schuberth C5 modular. I can easily slide it up when I get to a red light to not cook and close it once I get going. If stuck in hot slow moving traffic I can leave it up and lock it open. I added the light tint face shield and new SC Edge communicator to it, and it's perfect.

Another vote for the C5 - it's an amazing helmet. I use a Cardo Packtalk Edge with mine - I use IEM's as earplugs, so having the 3.5 mil jack to plug into (the SC Edge doesn't have it or it would be a no-brainer) is essential.

Video: Full Face Helmets vs. Modular Helmets(RevZilla), lets discuss, what do you prefer?

Posted by Rudivb · in r/motorcycles · 3 years ago

Full Face Helmets vs. Modular Helmets | Versus

After the video from RevZilla, lets discuss Full Face vs Modular.

I don't agree with all points in the video:

  1. Noise, although I agree there are many factors involved and "fit" is probably the most important, but modular helmets can be more quiet than Full-face helmets because of their design. Modular helmets can have more material around the neck and chinguard, which will block out more noise, look for example at Schuberth modular helmets.
  2. Safety, I agree Full-face helmets are technically safer, but one major advantage of Modular helmets is in case of an accident first responders can flip up the helmet, make contact, reach the airways, give mouth to mouth and easier/safer removal of the helmet.

I recently switched to a modular helmet, the Scorpion Exo-Tech, because I do a lot of miles in town and need to be able to make contact/talk with people.

** Little weird fun fact, my Scorpion Exo-Tech is the most quiet in the Jet position with the visor down, yes even at highway speeds.

What do you prefer and are your pros and cons?

Working for CG I sold a lot of helmets. FF was the most common, with some asking for modulars based on riding style or work needs. I sold two Neotec 2s to state patrol troopers on moto duty. They /hated/ Nolan with the fire of a thousand suns. Leaky, loud, weird pressure points, etc were their complaints. Schuberth C3 Lites were popular, too. Freaky light and mega quiet were common talking points among buyers. I dunno how well the hinges would hold up during a hit, tho.

It kinda says something that the entire staff, despite being paid a peon's wage, rode Shoei FF. Three RF1200s, one GT Air, and one RF-SR. Several wore glasses and Shoei makes that easy with temple molding. Oddly, everyone also wore ear plugs.

Nolan makes modular helmets in the US. Used to be popular among law enforcement and other pros until Shoei made the Neotech 2 and Schuberth imported more models to the US. Nolans leak in the rain, they're loud, they're cold, the modular locking is iffy. Of the people who have used a Nolan, I have not heard one nice thing about them.

Full Face over Modular. Smaller and less fiddily.

Larger helmets catch too much wind in an upright riding position with no wind screen. The bulky helmets tend to push my head around; which is obnoxious. I generally go for a 3/4 or half helmet to get around dealing with the added bulk of the larger Full Face and the even larger Modular helmets.

I’m legally blind without my prescription glasses, and I hate having to take them off for any reason, even to put on a full-face helmet.

Worse, putting my glasses back on after donning a full-face helmet is literally a pain, trying to force the ear pieces in-between the side of my head and the helmet padding, all while try to force the hooks down over my ears AND without bending the frames out of shape.

I only ever wear modular helmets, because I can don and doff them without removing my glasses.

How safe are modular helmets?

Posted by rksingh620 · in r/indianbikes · 15 days ago

I have a full face helmet from axor street (which has btw saved me in a major accident last year) but I don't like it using in daily city traffic. I am planning to buy SMK Gullwing modular helmet but I have read that modular helmets are not that safe on chin areas during accident. How much of an acutal difference is in safety between a modular and a full face helmet?

Modular helmets are fine unless you use them as half-face helmets. A half-face helmet basically doesn’t protect your chin.

6 upvotes on reddit
rksingh620 · OP · 15 days ago

I will be using it as half face sometimes in city traffic but definitely in closed face mode on highways all the time.

2 upvotes on reddit
confused__atmaa · 15 days ago

Accidents can happen anywhere, so it’s always better to use a full-face helmet. Personally, I’m not a fan of half-face helmets, full-face helmets protect you from everything, even dust.

Gullwing is ±1750gm! It is heavy af. Do try it out first before you buy it. It caused strain in my neck when I tried it in the shop for 5 mins. I had a studds trooper, a modular helmet, it is decent. I wouldn't recommend it on highways too much wind blast. In city is a boon, in heavy traffic just lift the face up, when trying to drink water on long rides, just lift the face up. It is convenient sure, but not a very safe helmet. Would save you in "city speed"s crashes but definitely not recommended for highways

The ECE DOT helmets are generally in this weight category I guess. I have one from axor and it is 1600gm approx. But yeah, I'll definitely try it first before purchasing. Thanks

Safest MODULAR Helmet?

Posted by EnnWhyy · in r/motorcycle · 3 years ago

Currently got a Scoprion Exo-R420 which I do like. Could use better airflow and it’s pretty big/heavy, but in love with it due to the SNELL rating.

Would like to switch to modular this season for a bunch of reasons.

I’ve learned that SNELL doesn’t seem to test modular lids because of the inner sun visor (which is complete bullshit).

SHARP has been my go to safety search now for modular lids.

Was sold on AGV Sport Modular until I saw they sold out to China (fucken disgusting for the price).

Shoei Neotec 2 so far seems to be main one I guess I’m checking out.

Found a new brand in UK called Caberg which had awesome lids but like impossible to find and some people have shared quality control issues I wasn’t really turned on to.

Scorpion/HJC/Bell/Shark Modular’s don’t seem to be any safe since I couldn’t find them on SHARP search unless I searched incorrectly for them there.

Caveat that I don't like modular helmets, a significant amount of impacts occur to the chinbar and they're just not nearly as safe as a full face for that occasion specifically. That said, I've been impressed with my HJC i10 full face and there's a sister modular helmet in the i90. It's ~$200 and ECE approved. Pinlock ready visor, glasses ready, 5 colors.

When I was picking out a modular helmet, I looked for something with a decent ECE rating and ended up going with an LS2 Valiant II.

I've been very happy with it so far, but be sure you bring your earplugs because no modular helmet will ever be as quiet as a full face model.

EnnWhyy · OP · 3 years ago

My full face never seemed that quiet. Wind noise has always been a factor and plus I got a loud cruiser exhaust doesn’t help but yep always wearing the ear plugs even tho I look like a loser lol.

Was just checkin em out and actually affordable and do like how it rolls back, but any idea where it’s made?? Seeing AGV made in China now has me checking every manufacture now.

NaymondPDX · 3 years ago

No, I am not sure where it was manufactured.

I really like the action on it since I ride a motorcycle and a scooter and live in a largeish city. Basically wearing it as a half helmet when I’m just heading to the grocery store on tiny side streets in the middle of August is great.

late to answer, but I'm using neotec ii after 5 years with c3 pro and half a year with ls2 metro. Neotec ii have incorporated sena comm plate, while cardo you have to stick outside like normal comms. For M size, c3 shell smaller than neotec ii (found out I can't fit neotec ii normally on my rear box, have to angle it to be able to close properly). Wind noise both c3 and neotec comparable. Most importantly, fitment is important, try all of them first before committing, if you don't have any dealership nearby to test, buy from seller with great return policy.

I don't know about the US, I notice the shoei ex zero which I have isn't available in the US either it seems, maybe it's not been submitted for testing there? I personally haven't tried them but a work colleague is in the market for a modular and the two he's trying to decide on are the C5 and neotec 2. Both available in the UK. Apparently the C5 addresses the issues that customers complained about on the C4.

I have two and it's all I wear. I've tried a few full faced helmets because they're lighter and cheaper (I like my jaw so no half or three quarter for me) but the convenience of throwing up the lid at a stop light to grab a drink, talk to your friend, or cool off quick is too nice to switch. I don't think I'll ever use anything else.

No. I wear a full face helmet. I was in an accident once. Most of the damage was to the front of that full face helmet. When I was in the hospital nurses and doctors kept saying “thank God you were wearing that helmet. We’ve seen riders with their face and skull torn open.” That was enough for me.

Full face rider here.

I don't really love the discourse in the general two-wheel community of "modular = bad because full face = best". The latter is true, yes, but almost all modern modular helmets are perfectly serviceable as helmets and in the vast majority of cases when a modular is being used properly and a crash happens? The outcome will be the same as if a full face was being worn. The weakpoints introduced by modular helmets, predominantly the hinges, are not some glaring flaw that helmet designers and DOT as well as other certifications just ignore or don't know of. They are minimized to a point where it becomes negligible - the force needed to make those weak points cause the helmet to function improperly would have to be so precise and so powerful that, quite frankly, you almost certainly would've been boned regardless. They are WILDY more protective (AGAIN, WHEN USED PROPERLY) than something like a 3/4 or god forbid a 1/2 helmet and neglibly less protective than a full face.

That being said, it's still important to take the more obvious risk of modular helmets into account; wearing it with the face-up. The one and only real use of a modular helmet should be not having to take it on and off when you pull off the road to do something like go into a store, check your phone, or (rarely, and with caution) to get some air if necessary at a stop light. Not to wear it half-up just because you're going at low city speeds. I hardly even have my visor on my full face up if I'm going at low speeds - exceptions include if I forgot my tinted visor and the sun is coming straight at me or keeping it open just a smidge to get some fog out.

Anyways, remember MSF: All the gear, all the time.

The issue is more that pin locks do a killer job fog resistance. Also, I'm not a huge fan of the sun shades, I'd rather just wear sunglasses. Theirs a few modules that offer photochromic, and a few that offer pinlock.. but not both. Most non modulars offer both, that's what I find strange.. Photochromic with pinlock is very convenient.. having modular on top of that would be perfect

Need ko na palitan modular helmet ko. I plan to buy a modular pa din. Hirap kasi ko magsuot ng full face dahil sa face shape at eyeglasses kaya modular gusto ko.

The one I'm replacing is an RxR brand (forgot the model) it was fairly cheap and for a reason. Di siya heavy duty. Malutong ang inner plastics niya lalo na yung sa turnilyuhan at yung sa inner visor mechanism. For this, di na ako uulit bibili nun.

Any brand recos na mura pero better build quality?

Have a Shark Evo One GT, best helmet I've owned. Really just have to decide if being able to open the front for extra air or to talk or to take a drink of something is worth the slight extra weight and additional wind noise at higher speeds. For me it is, but it aint for everyone.

Not really worth it for me; my modular helmet isn’t much different to don or doff chin bar up or down.

best modular motorcycle helmets

Key Considerations for Modular Motorcycle Helmets:

  1. Safety Ratings: Look for helmets that meet safety standards such as DOT, ECE, or Snell certifications. These ratings ensure the helmet has undergone rigorous testing for impact protection.

  2. Comfort and Fit: A good modular helmet should fit snugly without being uncomfortable. Consider trying on different brands and models to find the best fit for your head shape.

  3. Weight: Lightweight helmets reduce neck strain during long rides. Aim for a helmet that balances safety and comfort without being overly heavy.

  4. Ventilation: Adequate airflow is essential for comfort, especially during warm weather. Look for helmets with adjustable vents to help regulate temperature.

  5. Visibility: A helmet with a wide field of vision and anti-fog visor can enhance safety by improving peripheral vision and reducing fogging in varying weather conditions.

  6. Ease of Use: Modular helmets should have a smooth mechanism for flipping up the chin bar. Look for models that allow for easy one-handed operation.

Recommendations:

  • Schuberth C4 Pro: Known for its excellent comfort, safety ratings, and quiet ride. It features a built-in communication system and is lightweight.

  • Shoei Neotec II: Offers a great balance of safety, comfort, and ventilation. It has a high-quality build and a wide field of vision.

  • HJC RPHA 90S: A more budget-friendly option that still provides good safety features and comfort. It has a lightweight design and decent ventilation.

Choosing a modular helmet often comes down to personal preference, so it's best to try on a few models to see which one feels right for you.
