TL;DR Custom-fitted mouthguards from a dentist are highly recommended for bruxism. Over-the-counter options may be more affordable but can potentially worsen dental issues.
Custom-Fitted Mouthguards
The consensus across discussions is that custom-fitted mouthguards provided by dentists are the best option for managing bruxism. These guards are tailored to fit your mouth precisely, reducing the risk of further dental damage and aligning with professional recommendations [5:2]
[5:4]. Although they can be expensive, many users found them worth the investment due to their effectiveness in preventing teeth grinding and clenching
[5:6].
Over-the-Counter Options
While custom mouthguards are preferred, some users have had positive experiences with over-the-counter options like the Dentek "professional fit" mouthguards, which are easy to mold and relatively inexpensive [5:1]. However, other users warned against using cheap OTC mouthguards, sharing experiences where such products worsened their bite alignment and led to costly dental treatments
[5:3]
[5:5].
Specialized Brands
Bitesoft was mentioned as a specialized brand that offers night guards designed specifically for bruxers. These guards do not cover the back teeth, thus preventing chewing through them [1:2]
[1:3]. Pro Teeth Guard was also noted for offering thinner, lower-profile night guards that might be more comfortable for sleeping
[2:2].
Alternative Solutions
Some users discussed alternative solutions for managing bruxism beyond mouthguards. Stress management, breathing exercises, and even Botox were suggested as potential remedies to address underlying causes of bruxism [2:1]
[2:4]. High-dose magnesium was mentioned as a supplement that could reduce bruxism symptoms
[2:6].
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
While these discussions provide valuable insights, it's important to consult with a dental professional to determine the best course of action for your specific situation. They can offer personalized advice and ensure that any mouthguard or treatment plan is suitable for your needs. Additionally, exploring insurance coverage options for custom mouthguards may help mitigate costs.
When I'm sleeping, I know I don't grind my teeth from side to side at all, rather I clamp my teeth shut as hard as the muscles can. When I get woken up by it in the night, my jaw is locked together. All the night guards I see say they treat grinding and clenching, but look designed to stop teeth wear from side-to-side grinding. I need something that absorbs the brute force of clenching. Any particular brands I should try?
Hello, I’m the inventor and Patent Holder of a small nighttime dental splint that has been very successful in many countries as an aid for Bruxers over the past 20 years. It should be of benefit to you. Most people damage their teeth whilst sleeping so we strongly recommend only nighttime wearing of our splint. Hope I’ve helped a little, here’s the website that will provide more info. www.bitesoft.co
Bitesoft night guards don’t cover the back teeth so you can’t chew through them. Regards, Ian W Inventor of BiteSoft
Doctor's Nightguard is a typical supermarket brand and its the only one I've ever used. It really helps me from damaging my teeth at night.
They don't stop the clenching, of course. They just minimize the damage.
I get whatever the dentist provides from the lab but the one thing that changed everything for me was getting a BOTTOM mouthguard.
much better than the top for me. I bite thru it in ten months.
Like title says, I have severe bruxism and have grinded my teeth every night my entire life as far as I can tell. Because of this my teeth are very rigid and sharp, my face always hurts and I wake up with intense headaches.
Ive tried all sorts of remedies both online or recommended by dentists, but nothing seems to really work.
I spent hundreds on different custom mouthguards and boiled mouthguards, it seems like I pretty much sleepwalk and take them out of my mouth during sleep and put them on the side of my bed every night, never once have I been able to keep the mouthguard in my mouth. And yes the mouthguards fit very proper and tight, comfortably with no issue.
Dentists only suggestion was to continue spending 1000s plus on new mouthguards to try to find the magic one that will somehow work, but I have come to terms with my semi-sleepwalking being to powerful to overthrow.
Any advice? I really dont know what to do at this point…
Edit: when I say mouthguard I am referring to the night guards specifically
Title was supposed to read “No mouthguards have worked..”
Hey there, I know a lot about night guards since I own a company that makes them (Pro Teeth Guard). Not here to sell, just hoping to share some helpful info.
Of the custom night guards you tried, do you know what types / materials they're made of? And also the thickness? The hard acrylic ones at the dentist are typically pretty thick.
Perhaps you can find a thinner, lower profile night guard that you'd be able to sleep with. You can try an ultra-thin night guard that's kind of like a retainer or maybe a soft night guard, but made of a thinner material (2mm or thinner) that would be lower profile & more comfortable to wear. Also was your previous guard an upper or lower night guard? Some people tolerate a lower night guard better & it could stay in better v.s. an upper night guard.
There are a bunch of online brands (just do a search on Reddit or Google) that offer custom night guards & the most of them have a money back guarantee. Rather than continuing to spend $1000s plus at the dentist & not being certain these mouth guards will work, you can try ordering a few different varieties online & if it doesn't work out, you can return it for a full refund. Happy to answer any night guard specific questions you may have.
See the pinned thread for remedies
Mouth guards don't stop bruxism! They just reduce damage while you find the underlying cause and fix it. For night bruxism it can be stress, difficulty breathing, noises during the night and more I might not be aware.
If you're interested in tracking your progress, you might consider this https://www.reddit.com/r/bruxism/s/CRJG7GF7UY
Thanks for the input! I have tried lots of remedies from that thread, could look into a few more but haven’t had luck so far.
I havent tried to track it yet, mostly my partner helps me monitor because she had a hard time sleeping as is and she’ll check on me through the night.
Not sure why the only suggestion my dentist has tried to make for me is mouth guards…
I suppose your cause is known or your dentist expects you start a complementary treatment
Have you tried Botox?
No, I havent, my trigger is mostly stress while dreaming, but maybe some sort of botox would work. I havent really talked to anyone or seen much on doing this or whether it would help with my situation
I am in a similar boat. There is no cure, from my assessment, but there are things which can reduce it somewhat. High dose magnesium for example definitely reduces it slightly for me. Yesterday I had 600mg and I will try going higher. (See this article which explains there's no reason not to https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2161831323013352)
Interesting! Thanks for the insight, Ill give that a go.
Tried cannabis?
Hi! My mouth guard broke from dentist. What is the best over the counter mouth guard that you guys recommend? Thanks!
None. Go get a custom made one from your dentist
I heard otc mouth guards can worsen tmj
Not sure if there's a good over-the-counter mouth guard since they are generic. I couldn't find something that was comfortable to wear, so I switched to using a custom-fit guard. Good decision I made! Initially, I thought custom night guards were expensive, but then I found a dental guard manufacturer online that follows the same processes as dental clinics do for their mouth guards.
Do you happen to remember the name of that manufacturer? Thanks!
No problem! It's ClearClub
So during my last visit to the dentist, they mentioned that I have bruxism. And I've started to wear away at my front teeth due to it.

The dentist suggested that I get a flat mouth guard for it.
I did some googling and looked at Amazon. And most of the mouth guards seem to be either: boil it to fit around my teeth or the expensive custom fit ones.

What really stuck out to me is my dentist specifically said I should get a flat mouth guard (not custom fit)? Is he right? My un-educated thoughts on it were, if its a custom guard, the guard would kinda get locked into my teeth, so I do side to side grinding at night, would that put pressure on my teeth? While a flat mouth guard would allow my teeth to more skate along the surface?

Any suggestions on the best guards to get?
I think by flat your dentist means the part where your opposing teeth will touch it. A flat biting surface. It will be fit around your teeth. I would get a professional one made - not the kind you boil and fit yourself.
I have a mouth guard that my dentist made for me, and it is flat on top. They’re expensive but worth it. Mine is a lower guard, and I think it’s also helped my (mild) sleep apnea...lower guards are supposed to help more for that than upper according to my dentist.
I grind my teeth when I sleep and I need a mouthguard. However, they are ungodly expensive for my dentist to make one specifically for me. Does anyone have any experience/recommendations for an over-the-counter or Amazon option that is more affordable?
The best mouthguard you can get is fitted by a dentist. This is not the area to cheap out on, an online mouth guard can worsen your teeth grinding and further damage your teeth.
I have one made by my dentist and it was totally worth it. Luckily my dental insurance paid some of it too. I think my dentist charges around $400 for one.
This can actually be a lot of money for some people in the US
Please do not buy the cheap over the counter mouthguards. I used a couple of those and totaly messed up my bite over the course of 8-10 months.
Due to my inability to chew I had to get adult braces for two years costing me 4000$
Lesson learned, don’t cheap out on yourself. At least my teeth are straighter than ever now lol, and I’m in my 30s
This is not something to be frugal about. Pay for the custom night guard. Over years, grinding at night can seriously fuck up your whole mouth of teeth AND your jaw.
There is no good substitute- trust me I learned this the hard way. Now, at 42, I have the night guard and it’s changed everything.
YMMV but I fucked up my alignment with over-the-counter options. If there's any possibility of you being able to afford a dentist-fitted one, this is a time to do that. Be frugal in other areas.
Sometimes people just can't afford the good stuff
I have used the dentek "professional fit" mouthguards for years and I like them. The product is easy to mold to your teeth and reasonably inexpensive. You do have to replace them every so often depending on your grinding habits. Mine tend to last 6 months each.
Title pretty much explained it but last time I went to the dentist they said I should get a custom mouth guard especially for sleep. I am constantly clenching my teeth and during sleep it’s even worse. I try hard to be conscious of it and stop but I’m often in this state. This is also affecting my face, causing pain and headaches which then prevents me from doing things or feeling good. This ends up affecting my life in so many ways. So goes the cycle… Anybody else have experience with this? He mentioned it would be like 500$… I’ve tried the drug store one you boil and mold but being in my mouth made me want to chew it more.
Custom nigh guards from the dentist are the only way to go. Any cheap ones online will make your grinding and teeth alignment worse.
Do you have any experience with one? What are you getting out of it by spending 500$ or around that price? Is it durable? Is it perfect fitting? I don’t know it’s been overwhelming me to deal with it
Mine was $1200 for 4 custom made for my mouth with a 3D scan. It’s so far stopped my grinding and will prevent my teeth from moving. It fits perfectly to my mouth, you want these guards to fit very tight.
Sigh. At 71F, I deeply regret not using my mouthguard, made for me in my 20s.
I did get another one in my 40s, also little used. Yes, those molars do get ground down over time.
It will be worth getting. It is molded to your teeth and should be adjusted if it doesn’t quite fit. One caveat: if you get braces in the future, you will likely need a new one.
Custom night gaurd will prevent further damage and if it's not fitted properly, they can adjust (probably for free) until you feel comfortable. The cheap stuff is like a trial and error.
One drawback to a custom one is if you have any work done on your teeth it may not fit anymore. I had a root canal and crown, and now 1 year after paying several hundred dollars for a custom one it no longer fits right. I got one of the boil types, and like you, OP, it makes me want to chew and clench.
Another thing is while a mouth guard will protect you from clenching damage, it won’t actually stop clenching. I’ve actually had 2 custom ones (years apart) and continue to clench with all the pain that goes along with it.
Similar situation here! Waiting to finish dental work before I get a custom guard
Two non-mouthguard related thoughts: Are you taking any meds? They can make grinding worse- may still be worth taking but it is worth bringing up with your doctor!
I’ve seriously considered getting masseter botox injections before. Some dentists offer them. They basically freeze the clenching muscles in an unclenched stance, which theoretically doesn’t affect chewing but prevents serious clenching. Probably costs the same as the mouth guard and isn’t permanent, but some people report longterm improvements. It might be worth looking into.
Been there. Clenching wrecked my jaw and gave me constant headaches. The drugstore ones made it worse for me too. I ended up getting a custom guard from clear club instead of the dentist and it's way more affordable and actually comfortable to wear.
I have usedchomper labs
Been using it for 2 years, works fine!
I need a guard to handle some clenching during the day. Actually several guardsman!
I see the light weight guards by Plackers that have a small plate on each side for the molars. However there's no fitting it to the molars so it seems like it's going to be loose.
I only use one on a night
Thanks for the response. But I need a daytime option.
Anyone know any good brands for custom fit custom design mouth guards, I’m using a shitty boil one rn I need a new one asap
I’ve been using the clear club sports mouth guard its custom fitted and it fits great. It keeps my teeth protected and feels super comfy
Get your dentist to make you one, and a back up as well. Best mouthguard you will ever have.
These are all brands that do custom guards. I have a set from Guard Lab. They are awesome, but the customer service was terrible. I recieved my order many weeks after the projected delivery date. I had to repeatedly contact customer service and complain. It was only until I threatened to share my experience as a customer that they sent the product.
Also, they messed up the design and had to send me a replacement. So in the end I got two guards for the price of one. Not worth the headache though.
All three companies can do impressions. Getting an impression kit wasn’t an option for me. So I opted to get an intraoral 3D scan (what they use for Invisalign). I know DC can use the scans too. Idk about Funky.
I use the clear club sports mouth guard for that very reason it offers a comfortable, custom fit while still providing reliable protection. Its softer material helps absorb impact effectively, making it a great choice for training and sparring.
Hey I'm looking for recommendations for a top tier custom mouthguard. I had one and lost it, and that company, i believe it was proguard seems to be out of business.
The boil and bites all have high reviews and it's impossible to tell which ones are best.
EDIT: Reviews said it's between Impact and Gladiator for customs. Opro for best budget.
I went with Impact because they have extra $15 off clearance colors https://www.impactmouthguards.com/collections/clearance
If you want a decent guard you should go to a dentist and get one custom made. Boil and bite is fine but it’s not going to offer the level of protection you will get from a custom guard
This. Mine charged me only for material because he valued my teeth.
That’s a good dentist!
If cost is a concern there are option available online using the same moulding kits as the dentist uses. I ordered online, did the mould myself, shipped the mould and the dentist sent me a custom guard.

Womp womp
I have an impact mouthguard and I also got a clearance color and I’m very happy with it so far
I use this one: https://gladiatorguards.com/product/gladiator-high-performance/
Very happy with it, have been using it for many years now.
Venum. Good fit, good protection.
Y'all know the deal. Gear talk all goes to r/fightgear.
Now OP, since you were told this by another user and still decided to keep the post up you skip right to a ban. Flair removal is a warning, and you already decided to ignore yours.
I am just looking for advice and opinions. Which Gumshields / Mouthguards are best?
I have managed to lose my Gumshield and need to buy a replacement, I had a trusty cheap and cheerful Shock Doctor Gel Max for years and I've lost it.
I'm now trying to decide what to buy, thinking of going for the best Opro model or another Shock Doctor Gel Max.
Can anyone help?
Dentist measured mouthguard
Damage Control and SISU are also great
I have that exact gumshield, still got most of my teef. No but seriously, I have family and friends that worked for OPRO and speak very highly of the company, best brand in my opinion. Wouldn't use anything else.
Get one custom fitted by your dentist, shouldn't be more than £50-£60 and will work better than any other gumshield
In my country it's 150€, weirdly
The ones you get from your dentist.
I have two Guard Lab gum shields and really like them.
Best mouthguards for bruxism
Key Considerations for Choosing Mouthguards for Bruxism:
Material: Look for mouthguards made from durable, medical-grade materials that can withstand grinding. Common materials include thermoplastic and EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate).
Fit: A custom-fitted mouthguard is ideal as it provides the best comfort and protection. However, there are also boil-and-bite options that can be molded to your teeth at home.
Thickness: Thicker mouthguards generally offer more protection but may feel bulkier. A thickness of around 1.5mm to 3mm is common for bruxism.
Type: There are three main types of mouthguards:
Comfort: Ensure the mouthguard is comfortable to wear, especially if you plan to use it every night. Look for features like cushioning and a smooth surface.
Recommendations:
Custom-Made Mouthguards: If budget allows, consider getting a custom mouthguard from your dentist. They provide the best fit and protection.
Boil-and-Bite Options: The SOVA Night Guard is a popular choice for its comfort and ability to be molded to your teeth. It's also thin and allows for breathing.
Stock Mouthguards: If you're looking for a quick solution, the Oral-B Nighttime Dental Guard is a decent over-the-counter option, though it may not fit as well as custom or boil-and-bite guards.
Takeaway: Prioritize comfort and fit when selecting a mouthguard for bruxism, as this will encourage consistent use and provide the best protection for your teeth.
