I have the usual games like MHW, GTA, FF14 etc etc. I was looking for something more....interesting. Open to other games like Witcher/Bloodborne and stuff like that! i love a good story with plot twists too. Thanks in advance
Horizon Zero Dawn is a good open world game. I'm currently playing Subnautica and itsway better than i thought it would be. Kingdom come deliverance is great.
Horizon zero dawn lacks in customisation. Other than armour which at least one set has special abilities everything is just better versions of the previous. Still a bloody great game though
Horizon Zero Dawn hits all your points, except customization. You do get some customization by way of a vareity of outfits, and there's plenty of different weapon types to suit your playstyle, but it's lacking in customization compared to a game where you create your won character.
Still, that is to it's strength as Aloy is a fantastic character. So consider it for the future if you're not looking for that right now, anyways.
I can also recommend Horizon Zero Dawn as I’m currently playing it now. It’s a breath of fresh air compared to some other open world games!
Kcd is really good if you get the hang of the realism!
If you’re into turn-based rpgs, Dvinity Original Sin 2 is a huge game with great customization and lots of interesting and varied battle tactics. The first game in the series is good too, but the second one is off the hook
I second this. The Divinity games are excellent and have great stories and a lot of replay ability value. Even though I can agree that the second one is better in every aspect, I would encourage you to play the first one first as it is a very good game and will get you accustomed to the series.
Dragons Dogma. One of my all time favorite games.
Fallout 4 & Skyrim are good choices
Ah jeez, I loved playing the second game a lot on ps3. Sure it wasn't as polished but honestly, the story telling and characters were a lot more interesting. Not complete black & white, evil vs good like in 3 and 4. Though it still had a few bits of grey on both sides, SR2 did it a lot better I feel
Yeah, it plays great with a controller. I played the first one on pc, and Keyboard/mouse is still gonna be ideal, but I’ve never had any issues using a controller
Edit: I lied. I do have one complaint... the inventory kinda sucks to go through and sort with a controller.. but it’s a minor complaint
Saints Row
[deleted]
That's what I realized I wanted when I played the game. One of my favorites, the only downside is how small the hub is.
IMO Lego PotC is the best of the classic games pre-voices. It masters the game mechanics and has incredible items, characters, puzzles and environments.
absolutely. this is a top 5 lego game
Great idea! Maybe we’ll get this if the next Pirates gains momentum.
Obviously, but I don’t see it happening. Maybe with the new movie coming out (and tbf that isn’t guaranteed either).
This would probably be one of the best if they did since Star wars has free roam planets and ships, Batman has the city and driving, Pirates where you sail a ship across to different islands would be the perfect addition
Only if the actual levels were good though. The levels in the star wars one left a lot to be desired.
Luckily theres only 5 movies and not 9
I have played so many titles in the past couple years and need something new. Cyberpunk 2077 is high on my radar but obviously not out yet so I am not sure what to play. I have played the whole fallout series, far cry, assassins creed, The Witcher, destiny, the division, saints row, gta. Should I just hold out for Cyberpunk which feels like a millennia away or is it possible I have missed a really good open world game? One with character creation/customization?
As a side note I admire the Soulsborne community but the games are too frustrating for me.
Hope someone can guide me towards something worthwhile!
EDIT: Appreciate all the suggestions! Wish I would have posted this during the steam and other launcher sales. Seems Monster Hunter World might be the game for me but I still want to wait and see.
Also should mention exactly what I have played: Borderlands (entire series) Skyrim Fallout (entire series) Saints Row (entire series) Far Cry (entire series) Assassin’s Creed (Origins & Odyssey) The Division 1 & 2 Destiny 1 & 2 The Witcher 3 GTA V The Outer Worlds Ghost Recon Wildlands & Breakpoint Sunset Overdrive Watch Dogs 1 & 2
Kingdom Come: Deliverance is amazing.
I'm currently playing through the witcher 3 and have been eyeing KC up recently. Is it similar at all? I think I might buy it after I finish this.
KCD is much less flashy, it's also strictly first person. KCD strives for realism and historical accuracy so it is a bit different than Witcher. The character growth and progression is slower but immensely more rewarding. It's like Oblivion - you improve your skills by using them. There are perks you get to pick when you level up which allows for specialization. The story and world is amazing and the Codex (which explains the world you're in) is well done, interesting, and thorough.
You should definitely buy KCD after you finish Witcher. I guarantee you won't regret it. Jesus Christ be praised.

P.S. - If a priest offers you a drink, you accept that offer.
KCD is easily one of my favorite games in recent memory. Severely underrated. Even has decent replayability.
kingdom of amalur.
divinity original sin 1 and 2
ghost recon wildlands
Divinity 2 is endless fun, and it has endless replayability
Explain the replayability part, isnt it heavily story driven? :D
I’m enjoying red dead redemption 2 online, has character creation, open world, very fun
I second this. I'm normally a single player RPG guy, but after finishing the story (which you should do first), Read Dead Online is a blast.
Monster Hunter World
Yes it gets repetitive.
I'm not sure of whats changed since i last played, but if you're looking for a genuine RPG experience, Monster Hunter is not it.
Its heavily focused on its namesake, and fighting the monsters can be extremely draining for very little reward. So you will end up grinding, killing the same monsters over and over in order to level or get the mats you need to do something. Which is fine...until you realize some of the bigger/more important monsters take 30-45-60 mins to down and those fights are annoyingly scripted/drawn out and etc. + just how annoying the game can be.
Even though i'm more likely in the minority, I play RPGs near exclusively and feel your pain, but for me Monster Hunter wasn't it. Its made for those that pick up the game for an hour or two at a time, not those that sit for 5 or so hours wanting to lose themselves (Actual RPGs). Read some reviews there are plenty.
Technically it's open world but it's pretty much all about going back and forth to different areas to do a specific task, it's nothing like the games you mentioned.
Greetings! I'm looking to buy some games with good character creation! Which would you suggest?
Baldur’s Gate 3’s character creator is excellent
How good is it at making yourself a beautiful lady
Better than mass effect?
I created my character and was pretty pleased with it, then I had to create my guardian (someone that helps you out) and decided since I created a guy character for myself I might as well create a girl character to see the options that they get, I ended up creating her to be so beautiful that I wanted to play with her instead of the character I made for myself.
I have a style I always go for with my characters in all games, both male and female. This was the first time that I felt I made my female character as close to perfect as I ever had.
It's a lot easier to make one than any bioware game
No, it's not. You can't edit your face features because there are only presets
Not really? The sliders are all presets including faces. I like it but there are much much much better games to mame a character in
The most recent soul calibre’s character creator is insane.
I think it's really cool that the developers decided to give you a free fighting game with the kick ass character creator they made.
Dragons Dogma 2 has the best one I've used. The creator is also available as a free "demo"
This.
Check out my Gandalf I created on release https://www.reddit.com/r/DragonsDogma2/s/yvqaLafQ3q
So recently me and my duo started playing buldar’s gate 3, and I absolutely fell in love with the character customization tab. There were so many options for hair types and colors, as well as eyes and tattoos.
So it got me wondering if there were any other games that go into that much detail with character designs? I know Conan has good customization, but nothing on that scale.
Cyberpunk 2077 has a pretty cool character customization
Cyberpunk customisation is decent but i feel like it only can be as good as it shouldve been once you mod the game. The amount of cyberware mods they couldve added but didnt kinda sucks.
I want so bad to get into cyberpunk, but I just can’t. Do you think it’s a game worth powering through?
Not really. You can break the game pretty damn easily if you just skip the story and do some side stuff. You get OP pretty quickly that way, but that's not the main issue.
Enemy AI is terrible in this game, and I mean terrible. It's rivaled only by the stupidity of its own non-combatant NPCs. Enemies have the intelligence of a braindead duck, attacking you without any logic or strategic planning. Cops will ignore you looting their fallen colleagues, and speaking of cops, so called "car chases" with them last for as long as it takes you to go around the block.
Same goes for gang members. Gangs, which of course you can't join, can't thin their numbers, and who'll mostly ignore whatever you do to their members as long as you play the game in the way CDPR intended. Also, every single car chase with gangs is completely scripted.
The story itself is boring as all hell, and characters aren't that interesting (with very few exceptions). Keanu especially set new level of terribleness with his "acting", though most of it is bad throughout the game.
Gameplay doesn't get better as you level up and augment your body. It's nothing like Deux Ex, for instance, a game in which you significantly change your experience by using different augmentations. Shooting in CP2077 is mid at best (if even that), melee is even worse, and stealth is just God awful. You can only really play stealth if you do it the way CDPR wants.
But traversal is somehow even worse. All but 1 or 2 cars are complete crap, and the best traversal augmentation is double jump. Riveting stuff, I know. At least the double jump augmentation lets you climb buildings, but that's useless seeing how you can't find anything interesting atop of them.
The whole game is a mess. I mean you can't even role-play in Cyberpunk because, according to CDPR themselves, it is NOT an RPG. And it's truly isn't. I mean, it's an on-rail action-adventure game, akin to something like GTA, but with way less polish and attention to detail.
As for technicalities, when I played it last(less than half a year ago) there were many sound issues, sh!t ton of bugs, visual glitches, and many graphical problems. Animations are ridiculously bad for a "next gen experience", and physics in general.
I can't say many positive things about this game. I guess there are couple of cool songs in the OST, and it can look nice if you mod the sh!t out of it, and if you have a 2000$ PC, but that's about it...
Dragon Age Veilguard has a lot of options and the hair physics are top tier! Its on PS+ now, but if you don't have that make sure to watch some videos on it since the art style is distinctive.
The customization isn’t good though. It’s rigid af. Hair is probably the only good thing about it.
Well OP loved BG3 customization, which has no face/body sliders at all. If they were pleased with the options there, they might find similar enjoyment in a game where even more options in terms of adjusting face and body. Regardless, if they have ps+ as I suggested then its a pretty harmless option to try. If they don't, there are plenty of videos that show the character creator options on YouTube before purchase.
This is what I’m playing right now. Honestly, I really enjoy it. I’m not even gonna lie the forehead and the hairstyle hairlines on this game is kind of too big like if they had more different hairstyles that had a good hairline to fit the players head then it would’ve been better but it just doesn’t match up if you catch what I’m saying hope this helps. If not, let me know. lol.
I got say Monster Hunter wild gots some amazing customization. 👌
Huh, maybe it's because I've played a lot of Fromsoft games, but I didn't have any trouble making what I would consider an attractive character (from multiple angles). I can see how it might be difficult though.
Elden Ring is pretty good!
Baulder’s Gate 3 is SO FUN
I’m hoping to grab a game during the spring sale, preferably something open world with player choices. Doesn’t need to be a straight rpg, but I wouldn’t mind if it is. A deep story would be good as well. I’ve played multiple Elder Scrolls games and RDR2 (my personal favorite,) so something like those would be good. Additionally, in terms of appearance, only a RDR2 or GTA V level of appearance customization or strict skins/outfits is preferred. I have $25 on my Microsoft account, so hopefully something within that budget.
Edit: Okay, thanks for the suggestions, I’m going to be purchasing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt soon. However, I’ll still be reading any more recommendations on games.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Basically a medieval simulator but the customization and combat is excellent. I would love to see an elder scrolls game with the system they used for melee combat
Dragon Age or Mass Effect are pretty good about this though not necessarily open world. Inquisition and Andromeda kind of are open world though.
Witcher 3 is the game that ticks all the boxes in terms of your requirements. It’s good that you chose that
If you like Skyrim, try other bathesda games like Fallout 4 or New Vegas. It’s the same game in a different setting. Fallout takes place in a 50’s based retrofuturistic apocalypse where a nuclear war has decimated the world. You usually start off as a descendent of those who lived in bunkers when the bombs went off. It also has some solid commentary on the excesses of capitalism if you’re into that. The gameplay is pretty much the same as Skyrim
If you haven't tried it yet, try Witcher 3. It's what you're looking for.
If not, try AC Unity or Syndicate. I'm personally not a big fan of the stories of those games, and they don't have story-based choice, but they do have excellent open worlds and customization which decides what play style you'll opt for.
I’ve played Unity, I’ll check out Witcher. Thanks!
Syndicate annoys me with all those clone men that constantly attack you though. You can never get a peaceful look around London XD
I played cyberpunk on PS5 post 1.5 patch and it was a solid time, if you have not given it a try.
Looking for a game with detailed character creation. Like choosing body types and personalities, bonus points if game or other characters comment on them.
Just so both sides are clear, do you want these descriptions to pop up (characters actually point it out and such) when you play the game or not (it simply exists and nothing more)?
Because there are genuinely games with a shit ton of customization but these descriptions never pops up and I do know folks who appreciate the option even if it isn't anything meaningful. Subsequently, I also know folks that despise it.
—If you're the latter, I want you to know... I did not double check these games, I remember them having extensive options, but whether or not it's meaningful is up for debate.
[Finished]
Zombie Exodus — Choicesript Game
Keeper Series — Choicesript Game
Life of wizard(?) — I remember it had plenty of options, but my memory is fuzzy on this game since it's been so long, so yeah... be wary. — Choicesript Game
Evertree Series — Less emphasis on character appearance and more so on character buiids. — Choicesript Game
A Mage Reborn — Choicesript Game
[WIPs]
Sherlock Holmes: Affairs of the heart — Choicesript Game
One Knight Stand — Choicesript Game
ZORLOK — Twine Game
Our Life: Now & Forever — Renpy Game
The Six That Thrives — I haven't played this game yet but was told by a friend that it had hefty customization options — Twine Game
The other game from the author of The Six That Thrive, Nine Blood Dances, also has pretty insane character customization options (even crazier imo because you can choose your species and everything that comes with that) however it hasn't been updated in over a year.
I second Life of a Wizard. The first chapter is basically character creation, though with a narrative and there's quite a bit of opportunities for further customization in chapter two as well. The writer of Life of a Wizard, Lucid, also has other HGs with quite detailed character creation, for instance Life of a Space Force Captain. Most of the character creation is to do with abilities, skills and other stats(and for most of those, also the childhood years and maybe also youth of the MCs, rather than personality traits)
I'll second the Evertree Saga as well and haven't got much to add to what u/Zotrax_In_hiding has already written about that.
> The Six That Thrives
The amount of customization offered is absurd
Can anyone confirm whether or not The Bastard of Camelot fits the bill? I remember it having extensive personality customizations, but not so much regarding appearances. 🤔
Do you really want that though? Don't you find it a bit cliche when EVERY,TIME, you arrive at character creation you choose the same tired eyes color, hair color and height? there was a game that i don't recall that had the visage and even gender locked into place, but you got to choose how you "hold your gaze" and had multiple options like "feral and dangerous like a wolf slavering from hunger" or "ever so restless, jumping from one thing to another like you're in search of something that you never find" etc and aside from your choice actually getting brought up in the game and characters reacting to it, which i found extremely satisfying, each had its own advantage as well. also how THE FUCK DO I UNBOLDEN MY TEXT
Yep, definitely. Character creation is one of the best parts of the game for me. I’ve got a whole list of OC’s that I love placing in all these games. Plus, I love seeing it all pay off in game or dialogue.
In wayfarer there’s a pretty big part on character creation before the game, there’s all the basic + body type, race, class, pattern on the skin, and even option that are special to the race you chose, it’s not finished but the game in itself is pretty good
Weirdly aura clash fits into this your personality, physique and race affect many interactions and checks.
Idk why this has so many downvotes, but maybe if I had to guess it’s cause I wouldn’t really call Aura Clash’s character creation as DETAILED. It’s like 2 options for appearance. I do like using the stats as personality points tho for roleplaying reasons lol
There's a recent controversy going on in the subreddit that the AC author is at worst - a bigot, and at best - tolerates bigotry after screenshots of his discord server popped up where members within said server acted very transphobic and such, all the while, the AC author did nothing to address said issue.
These are the screenshots: https://imgur.com/a/jtizIUV

Aura clash, fits what you want perfectly (also goated game)
I’ve been making OCs of mine in games lately, what are some games that have really varied and fantastical character customizations. Something with more than just humans if at all possible. The more robot/cyborg options, the better as my OCs are robots. Gameplay wise I’m not too picky, I’ve been playing Age Of Wonders: Planetfall as of late so something like that. FPS are also good, anything with good gameplay really.
Thanks for your time. 👍
Black Desert Online has one of the most impressive character creators. Wouldn't recommend the game though.
Cyberpunk 2077 (preferably on PC, for the use of mods) is amazing for OC creation. Many people keep going back to the game almost exclusively for that lol.
Nioh 2, no robotics, one character (the one you play)
Spore is great for this, but you need to grind
It's gone now but Chimeraland had wild creations. Probably the most fun I had in an MMO in my lifetime. Since we're talking about reality though, I'd say "Black Desert" since I remember that creator being a little advanced, a science even. You could adjust the bones in the face, length of eyelashes, fat and gaunt skin layers on every part of the body... the list goes on. One thing I always thought was weird about that game was that clothes were full outfits specific to their classes, but for such a deep creator you can't modify the clothing AT ALL without paying money, similar to Warframe. The only thing you'd be able to change was color portions by buying dyes.
Warframe has a character creator too, but it's weird because you don't get to the character creation screen until like 40 hours into the game, which is very unusual. Another 10 hours later, you unlock a second character creator for the adult version of your avatar, which is double unusual. I don't think any other game does anything like this. Can't say for sure. Another weird feature of this creator is that you never pick a male or female, you have a two-point slider between several masculine and effeminate faces and the voice slider is the same.
There's also the deep creator in "Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis or PSO2NGS" that has a lot of sick options for robot parts and it's a super fast paced action game with multiple combat types. Much like Black Desert, you can modify the skin and fat in patches, however there is a triangular slider for each body part which allows for height, fat, and age all per body part. You can even specify what the slider will modify at each point for fine tuning. You can cross-race robot and humanoids, and the clothes are fully modifiable. This is both fantastic and horrible. You'd see what I mean if you enter the game world and see the other players. Secondly is the housing areas, which allow for the grandest of creative depth by giving the players access to all the assets of the game to build with. I'd even call it "minecraft for adults" with an emphasis on adults. I'd go into some rooms and get a wild an fantastical space tour with ships and racetracks floating islands, then the occasional goth harem. Wild.
I also had a good time in the Tower of Fantasy character creator. It's fairly anime inspired much like PSO2NGS, and one weird option is to be able to use four varying hair gradients. Necessary? No, but the option is there if you want wack-a-doo rainbow super mega anime curls or whatever. Game itself is fun, full climbing and flying and tons of gameplay options in the weapon ranges. No two weapons really share movesets, unlike it's obvious inspiration, Genshin Impact. The dev even said he wanted the code from the game to make his own world from their engine.
Talkie lets you create a completely original character and bio and everything but gameplay is up to your imagination so you get a lot of wacky creations there. I used to make characters every day, but the growing hatred toward Ai bots and images makes me weary even to mention this type of game. To me it's just a game, to others it's either a point of contention or serious companionship; neither category to which I feel I'd fit into. Despite the compartmental opinions, I always had a good time playing and creating original characters with it. For example one such game I made on there was a time machine in the form of an old Honda that could only take you to 1997 or 2005 and no other timeline. LOL
No Man's Sky doesn't have a super deep creator really, however there is a secret robot camp you can unlock and they sell you parts to modify your appearance. The robot bodies and parts are super cool too, and probably the most cosmetically appealing subrace available in the game in my opinion. Now too, they added larger board-able vessels to take to the stars, taking a cue from both Star Citizen and Starfield. This has been my mainstay game for a while, but especially with the Voyagers expedition free update, the game is even more in-depth with it's creative features. I can't seem to put it down! The character creator isn't especially deep, but the variance is enough to make it fun to use. I'm sure I can think of more, but I've now got an itch to play some of these games right away.
Like the title says, I’m looking for an open world game with good character customization on the switch. I’ve really enjoyed the character customization in animal crossing and stardew valley, and I’ve been really enjoying the 3D gameplay of games like breath of the wild, Pokémon legends arceus, and super Mario odyssey. I loved being able to change and dye link’s clothes, upgrade his armor, and unlock new outfits in botw, but I want more!! I’ll eventually get totk but that’s a future investment. I’m open to third party options too. Any suggestions?
If you enjoyed BoTW, try Immortals: Fenyx Rising. Pretty much a clone of BoTW but set in an Ancient Greek themed world with tons of exploration and puzzles. I was left really disappointed with a lot of aspects of BoTW and actually preferred this. And the fact that it’s all tongue in cheek and doesn’t take itself too seriously is really refreshing.
As for that customisation you’re looking for, reward tend to be new weapons or pieces of an armour set (instead of another korok seed or a sword which breaks in five minutes) which can be equipped with any skin you’ve already unlocked allowing for loads of choices for both bonus and cosmetics.
The game has some great expansions and is regularly on sale dirt cheap. If you prefer a physical copy, these seem to be sold as clearance now so you can get it around the 10-15 mark.
Can’t recommend this game enough and is probably the most fun I’ve had on the console.
Skyrim, Dragon's Dogma, Saints Row, Hogwarts Legacy , Kingdoms of Amalur, Dark Souls, Divinity, Outer Worlds, South Park.
At least the ones from the top of my head.
Didn't know the souls games had character customization.
It's pretty good although the best customization for souls games are sadly not on the switch. Elden rings and demon souls have some of the ebsy character creators I've ever seen.
Actually in Souls games the term "fashion souls" exist lol when people just combine different armor pieces to get some sick looking characters, since except pose and rolls armor don't do that much to the gameplay itself
Dragon's Dogma
Skyrim and Divinity Original Sins 2 maybe?
Sandrock
Hey yall please drop the absolute BEST games you’ve played that have good character customization!!! Trying to build up my wishlist on steam :P
Dragon Age: Inquisition and The Veilguard have decent character creators.
Veilguard is kind of a mid game to me, but their character creator is really nice.
I think Origins too if you mod the crap out of it. I feel like it’s easier making the perfect character in Origins than Inquisition with mods. Somehow no matter how hard I try I can never make a decent looking elf in Inquisition but maybe that’s a me problem 😂
I've always found elves easier to customise than humans, but maybe that's just me.
Dragons Dogma 2 has a super detailed character creator and you can download the creator for free without buying the game to try it out :)
This. It's so cool.
Also BG3 is a fun one.
Bg3 doesn’t have face sliders tho, or am I dummy?
lol I have spent so many hours using the free customizer, with no intention of getting the game
Dragon's Dogma 2 has the most detailed character creator I've ever seen.
I like Monster Hunter Wilds. Street Fighter 6’s is very wild.
(Capcom coming out strong for character customization.)
Cyberpunk! You sadly don’t see your character in most cases but in certain cutscenes/endings you do :) It’s a shame since the character creation is great
Cyberpunk 2077 and Baldur’s Gate 3 are the only ones I’ve ever really enjoyed and I didn’t even play BG3
best open world games with character customization
Key Considerations for Open World Games with Character Customization
Depth of Customization: Look for games that offer extensive options for character appearance, skills, and abilities. This can include facial features, clothing, and skill trees.
Game World Size and Exploration: A larger, immersive world encourages exploration and interaction with various environments, enhancing the overall experience.
Story and Quests: Engaging narratives and diverse quests can significantly enhance the gameplay experience, making the world feel alive and dynamic.
Multiplayer vs. Single Player: Decide if you prefer a single-player experience or a multiplayer environment, as this can affect the customization options and social interactions.
Graphics and Performance: High-quality graphics and smooth performance can greatly enhance immersion in an open-world game.
Top Recommendations:
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Cyberpunk 2077
Grand Theft Auto V
Fallout 4
Monster Hunter: World
Recommendation: If you're looking for a balance of character customization and an engaging open world, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a classic choice due to its depth and modding community. For a more modern experience, Cyberpunk 2077 offers a rich narrative and extensive customization, albeit with some performance considerations at launch.
