Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 offers a sophisticated character creator that includes fashion choices and an excellent photo mode, allowing players to capture their customized characters in various settings [3:7]. While the game provides a rich customization experience, some players note that you don't see your character much during gameplay [3:2].

Additional Recommendations

Other games mentioned include Divinity: Original Sin 2 for flexible character development [4:2], Mass Effect: Legendary Edition for story-driven RPG experiences [1:5], and Guild Wars 2 for clothing and weapon customization [5:1]. ORIGINAL POST

After burning myself out on Elden Ring I’ve been looking for a game(s) with that freedom of creating your own character. I’ve already done Skyrim, all of Soulsborne, Nioh 1 and 2, Cyberpunk, Dragons Dogma and Monster Hunter World. What are other games with similar character creation? RPGs are preferable, but anything will suffice.

You could always play the Sims, or really most MMORPGs.

MMORPGs are really great. Especially FFXIV. Thriving community, great story, fantastic gameplay and of course a top tier character creator.

Code vein is a souls like with an anime style characters. The character creator on it is insane

If highly recommend it, its honestly my favourite souls like game (Altough that may be because its the only one I've finished) never really cares about the story but if you do the cutscenes are fairly enjoyable, well composed and has decent acting. If you don't you can skip all of them anyway. Builds are also great, instead of upfrading one attribute at a time you have a general level up and then you can spends more points towards new abilities, ranging from new moves, buffs or whatever. Character customization is honestly one of the best in a game I've played

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition

Story-driven RPG that spans across three great games while being able to seamlessly transfer your customized character along with the choices you make throughout the games.

Not Fallout NV, and Fallout 3 only works on old Windows (7 maybe?). Fallout NV has a stuttering problem with 4K textures and seems most people have abandoned it. I would suggest FO4 for character creation and BEAUTIFUL mods. For FO4, avoid tree and grass mods since they reduce your FPS to 1 digit and crash your game a lot.

Not to mention fuckton of fashion.

Honestly, I feel like Dragon's Dogma has the most varied character creator I've ever seen. I like to make self-inserts when I play RPGs, and that game is the only one where I've been able to accurately recreate my front-heavy physique.

Yup, came here to suggest Dragon's Dogma as well. What impressed me even more than all the options was the fact that your weight and height even matter in game! Not that NPCs are commenting on it, but climbing up a cyclops back is much faster if you're light, while being heavy allows you to hang on to a griffin, keeping them from taking flight.

Intrepid-Dust2711 · 2 years ago

Dragon's Dogma's CC is great for various body types, but it sucks for faces, since you only get to pick from ready-made facial structures, eyes, lips etc. and can only move them around in a very limited fashion. You can't even change things like eye size etc.

Seconding this. With RaceMenu installed you can even sculpt your character's face. And of course, there's no shortage of mods to improve on textures, hairstyles, armor, etc.

Granted, you'll find more realistic character creators in games like Cyberpunk 2077, and ones with more customization options in games like The Sims 4. But in my experience, modded Skyrim maintains the best balance between realism and customization.

Games with Fun Character Creator?

Posted by seerbuccaneer · in r/GirlGamers · 2 years ago

Just curious what recommendations people might have for games with a good CC, or highly customizable PC! Something other than an MMO, ideally, as I'm looking for an enjoyable single player experience, whether it's more RPG or dress up/VN/lifesim.

Fem PC is a must, and customizable skintones would be great, though I might begrudgingly make an exception if the PC has one set skintone...! Romance would be nice, too, but def not a requirement lol

I've already played a lot of go-to standards, your Bioware and Bethesda games, other games with CC's I've played and enjoyed are: Kingdoms of Amalur, Saints Row, Outerworlds, Fable, PoE, and surely others... Honorable mention to The Sims, too. I fw PlayChoices, at times, but don't especially want a timelocked and/or micro-purchase heavy game unless it's a satisfying f2p

Anyway, just curious about what others favs are, and what they might recommend!

EDIT: oh I got a lot more replies than I expected, glad to see other CC lovers lol! Will try to read thru and respond when I can but I love the discussions going on, interesting so many people have suggested cyberpunk 2077, love that genre but was on the fence after the botched release and was just thinking how I'd forgotten about it 🤔🤔🤔

I came in here thinking, "I'm late to the thread but I gotta tell these folks about Baldur's Gate 3." So imagine my delight at seeing this as the top comment.

I've held off from early access because I wanted to experience the game in its fully completed state, but I'm probably going to buy it ahead of time just to play with the not-quite-complete character creator.

It makes me sad that the devs are saying, "we don't know how to market this game because we've focused on so many aspects that it's an overwhelming whole to try and communicate." I'm totally sold on the hype of how much passion and years of dev time have gone into this game so now I just want to shout from the rooftops that people should give this game a try.

Favorite WRPG when it comes to character customization and character creation?

Posted by MettaMorphosis · in r/rpg_gamers · 3 years ago

My two favorite were:

Might & Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven, I loved how many skills you could improve, how improving them added bonus effects. Also, the classes were pretty basic, but I enjoyed the differences.

And Neverwinter Nights (with the expansions), I loved the classes, and prestige classes, and all the options.

What are some of your favorites? Especially modern games? I was looking at Pillars of Eternity and it looked interesting, but I wanted to explore all of my options before I decide on what game to play.

I love a good story, but honestly, it's not really all that important, sometimes less of a story can allow me to dig my teeth into the gameplay more, and I like that.

One of my favourites not yet mentioned is Divinity Original Sin 2. Characters are classless (there are starter classes but they work more as a starting kit), so development is incredibly flexible. You can have a party of generalists or hyper specific builds. And often the world is full enough of variables that any play style can find a route to success.

In terms of "stat" customization: Pathfinder: Kingmaker and the sequel (aka even more options) Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous are probably the most detailed/complex games where it comes down to character creation/development in terms of skills, abilities, "class fantasy" and overall customization. >!Like you can be a gnome alchemist/cavalryman charging into the battle on the raptor, throwing molotovs at enemies!<

In terms of "story" customization: Dragon Age: Origins with it's origins prologues, multiple ways to solve each major quest line, how those quest lines could influence each other. Example: >!Like: You can pick if you want to move the demon to the wife of the baron (or whatever his title was) and kill her or just kill her possessed son; or if your previously solved mages questline and decided to not purge them, you can use mages to save both mother and son.!< And there are many quests that are intertwined in the non linerar way, so you can never get all the "secret" endings to all of them. Add to that that your companions can change their morality based on what they have experienced and how you talked to them. Example: >!Alistar, because of his idealism, will abandon you if you become "reaver" subclass. But if, you put him trough enough shit before, and each time afterwards you will tell him that world is shit and only the strongest will survive, he will become "harden", change his morality, his behavior and will accept even you becoming reaver.!<

Basically DA:O really feels like the ultimate "replayable" rpg, since there are so many origins/mainquestcomplitions/companionsrelations that each playthrough feels like you're reliving the same story with a completely new person who led to completely different outcome.

Its definitely on the easier end of CRPGs but it will forever be one of my favorite games. I go back to it basically once a year and mess around. I just love the world and the characters and I really wish they would have continued with the "origins" aspect, each race/origin coming from a different background was so enjoyable.

I enjoyed 8 a lot myself. Story might be bit bland overall, but the dialogue was still entertaining enough, and the combat was fantastic. One of my favorite dungeon crawlers. Definitely a labor of love from the developers and a suitable homage to the earlier era of complex turn-based RPGs during a time when everything seemed to be moving away from that (which has since had some resurgence).

If you do try it, I recommend using the wiz8fast mod at minimum though - enemy movement is too damn slow in the unmodded game.

There are also Mythic Paths which you can unlock as you play. You get to choose from multiple thematic abilites and eventually you lock yourself into a certain type of Mythic class. Or you can choose to just get another 20 regular class levels in a different class.

2 upvotes on reddit
E
Elliptical_Tangent · 3 years ago

No, there are ability trees. Feats often unlock other feats which themselves unlock feats, etc. (EX: Power Attack unlocks Furious Focus which unlocks Dreadful Carnage) The Mythic system in PF:WotR also has requirements that unlock higher abilities. Some classes have optional class abilities that are unlocked by lower-level optional class abilities. (EX: To get the Nauseated Mercy for your Paladin, you have to have selected the Sickened Mercy at an earlier level).

I played Star Wars The Old Republic for a few years and was loving the story and characters and several other things, but hated how mind-numbingly easy they made the main gameplay so quit.

That being said, it was the best damn character dressup game I've ever encountered. When they realized that outfits could sustain them when they went f2p, and wouldn't anger anybody, and that it's Star Wars with tons of options and decades of movies/comics/games/books/toys, they just went nuts.

KotOR 2 was made by a different company and rushed out for release so feels somewhat unfinished.

It's okay, but most of the characters are nowhere near as memorable, and there's a whole bunch of villains who feel more like ideas than fleshed out antagonists.

Animal Crossing is basically the ultimate clothes collection game if you're into cartoony styles at all.

Since you like GTAV, you could check out other Rockstar games. Red Dead Redemption 2 has a lot of clothes you can acquire although it's not quite modern but at least it's not ancient armor.

Guild Wars 2 has a lot of visual options for your characters.

Baldur's Gate has some options (race, class, clothing color), for your main character.

Icewind Dale lets you make your entire party, customize them similar to how you can customize in Baldur's Gate.

Cladun has a lot of customization in that you can actually draw what your character looks like. Plus the classes and character progression are pretty custom.

Disgaea has extensive progression but not too much visual customization, but each class looks different which is cool.

Black Desert Online has the best character creation ever (it's not my opinion, it has been confirmed), but the game itself is a big grind and has a lot of RNG. It also has a good skill system and it's the MMO with the best combat system. P.S. The game has the worst story...

Try Neverwinter if you want medieval experience. It has a nice character creation, not really a big skill system, but it's still ok and a lot of progression. It's an MMO too.

MapleStory2. Although it's a new game I think it deserves a chance.

I would love another rpg like these but honestly anything with a lot of clothing/hair/face options would be great! TIA ❤️

Monster Hunter on any platform, every hunter knows true endgame is fashion.

Every armor and weapon is transmog, plus all the unlockable outfits and stuff.

Updated my post already played but tysm! I like the fashion and gameplay but some of the anime-style aspects turned me off. I might give it another shot someday tho:)

If you're referring to Rise, previous MH games were much less weeb oriented.

Dear friend, we are very much alike.

I see a lot of the games I was going to mention already listed, so I hope you don't mind if I provide a link to a long list of games that will hopefully aid your search.

Video Game Tropes: And Your Reward is Clothes

As someone always on the hunt for games like this, may I also suggest looking into PS2 and PSP emulators, as there are a LOT of games on those consoles that fit the bill, and many never got released anywhere else sadly. Some I will mention are Phantasy Star Portable 1 + 2 and Lord of Arcana (similar to Monster Hunter).

Honorable Mention: Way of the Samurai is an excellent series in my opinion, but I should mention they all begin with limited character customization and you unlock them all by progressing and replaying the games multiple times (they're all pretty brief playthroughs, and you're intended to repeat the story, choosing different paths each time).

Once you buy or unlock clothing/accessories/items in a session, you'll own them forever and you can start a brand new game with anything you've unlocked and paid for whenever you want.

Edit: to give a better idea of the scope of all the options available, here's a checklist of items needed in Way of the Samurai 4 to earn the "Fashionista" trophy: https://www.playstationtrophies.org/forum/topic/160157-fashionista-checklist-hairstyles-clothing-accessories/

There's some really cool stuff in this list I'd literally never find just looking for fashion games on my own. Thank you so much! I hope some like-minded people stumble upon this too. There's something for everyone!

Yeah, tvtropes.org is pretty amazing when you're looking for a specific mechanic or "vibe" from a game, tv show, or movie.

I can spend months in that rabbit hole.

Really stick to the third. In my opinion 4th went past the line from fun to ridiculous. Not by much, but still prefer 3rd more.

How important is character customization in an RPG? Does it make or break the experience for you?

I'm happy either way. But if I can't customize the character I expect it's because the character already has a pre defined personality and backstory (think Witcher). So basically either customizable character or fully realized well written character. If the character is a blank slate to insert myself into... Add customization.

This is my exact thought – if it’s not my original character, then I’ll be looking forward to finding out who this character is, and I’ll be disappointed if they don’t have a proper story or personality.

I don’t necessarily need the editor to be super deep or complex – just having a few choices on what the character looks like signals to me that the story might not be curated around a pre-defined character, which sets my expectation on the story accordingly.

i would say it s depends on customization options. For me, it doesn't break the experience. On the contrary, it allows for deeper immersion and a closer connection to the character(For example, if you don’t like the default appearance.)
But if you for some reason … I don’t even know… can do overly caricatured characters or use items that don’t fit the era (like a ligthsaber n the Middle Ages), it would break the experience. Though, if it’s a single-player game, that would be on me.

Honestly the more games start adding individual freckle counts for butt cheeks the less I care about it. Give me 4-10 hair styles, 5 faces and let my goblin gamer brain play this first person RPG where my face will be covered by a full helm anyway.

It doesn't break the experience but changing some token things is required but not a selling point.

I think it's worth a lot to create a character that looks like yourself in RPG games.

I might be an outlier here based on the comments up to this point, but I actually care a great deal about character customization. Somebody mentioned how games like the Witcher are an exception, and I agree. But any RPG where my character is supposed to be MY character? I appreciate having a great deal of control over their appearance, backstory, personality, etc. I've spent hours in modded Skyrim or Cyberpunk customizing my character to my heart's content.

I definitely understand why plenty of people don't really care to that degree, and I can't fully explain WHY I do. It just makes my brain happy, and I genuinely find myself enjoying the rest of the game far more whenever I'm actually able to bring the vision of my character to life.

Need a game with a good-sized cast and decent character customization. Being picky and annoying about it (sorry).

Posted by Monessi · in r/rpg_gamers · 4 months ago

Just finished COE33 and absolutely loved it, but nothing I've tried picking up since has really scratched the itch.

As much as I'd love more of the same, I don't totally know that another game like that exists, so beyond that what I'm kind of jonesing for is something with a larger roster that still allows a ton of customization, and ideally still has a great story if possible.

A few games in that family I've already played/loved: Suikoden III/V (I've played/loved the others too but those are the ones I'd say have the level of build flexibility I'm jonesing for), Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Unicorn Overlord, FFT, Fell Seal, Dragon Age 1-3.

I played and liked but didn't love BG3 (definitely had the build diversity angle covered, I just didn't think much of the writing outside of Act 2 and didn't click much with the cast).

Some games most people seem to love that I couldn't dig on: Witcher 3 (couldn't get into anything about it narratively or mechanically), Persona 3 Reload (hated the characters and the bingey nature of the combat/social split), Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous (just a buff festival), Pillars of Eternity (played about half of it, just kinda lost interest), Mass Effect (couldn't get the hang of the combat), Shadowrun (just couldn't seem to get a feel for it)

Other RPGs I really loved even they aren't exactly what I described above: Ogre Battle 64, Xenogears, FFVIII, Star Renegades, Wasteland II, Fallout: New Vegas, Jagged Alliance 3, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Skies of Arcadia, Brigandine, X-Com 2.

A couple games I own that seem like they might fix the bill, but I haven't started as I'm waiting for the DLC to finish coming out: Rogue Trader, Trouble Shooter, Guild Saga: Vanished Worlds, Wandering Sword

Western or Eastern RPG is fine, just looking for something that can really hook me.

I mostly play on PC and Switch but can probably finagle anything that's not current-gen on other platforms as-needed.

If I can be even more difficult, would love something with either a monstery/gothic vibe, or something that goes completely the other direction and is more modern/firearms-y.

Any suggestions that factor in all those vague and contradictory inputs, or am I chasing something that doesn't exist?

Thanks in advance for anyone who can solve my annoying self-inflicted riddle!

EDIT: Ended up snagging Metaphor, Octopath 2, and Tales of Arise, and bookmarked a bunch more for later/if those suck. Thanks everyone!

I'm gonna recommend Final Fantasy XII, specifically the zodiac version (i.e. the remaster) mostly because of your desire for a decently sized roster with good customisation.

It has a really good job system and a party of 6 which are basically fully customisable blank slates (aside from their base stats)

Also, free re-specs! So you can experiment heaps with your builds.

It's not the most loved FF, but it is my personal favourite and seems like one you'll enjoy from what you're saying.

Here are a few that might fit what you’re looking for:

  • Ni No Kuni 2

  • The Trails series (Trails in the Sky, Trails of Cold Steel, Trails though Daybreak, etc)

  • Greedfall

  • Lost Odyssey

In each of these party-based games, you have a variety of party members from which to choose, and you get to know each of them in depth. You know their strengths and weaknesses and what they bring to the party composition. More importantly (to me, at least) you get to know them personally. You learn their back-stories and whatnot. They are more than just a set of battle skills.

Good luck in your search!

Seconding Greedfall; it has strong characters and stories (and I found myself weirdly charmed by some Gaelic Age of Sails with magic).

Octopath 1 is also very good, Octopath 2 just really improves upon it. In case you wanted to try both games, play 1 first so it doesn't feel like a downgrade later.

Recent: Avowed is pretty neat. The cast is awesome.

Oldie: Shadow Hearts (ps2) has a very unique em setting and cast.

Shadow Hearts was one of the ones I was looking at! Do you feel like it holds up?

I thought Avowed was more... Fallout/Skyrim/Outer Wilds style where it's just the one character and maybe a sole companion? Or is it more party-based and I'm misinformed?

Party of at least 3 at all times with plenty of camp banter and then barging into npc discussions. Definitely not a “quiet companion who carries your stuff” game.

It's an anime jrpg. The tales series goes way back and is well established in the genre and they go all out in every title.

It has a large cast of interesting characters, strategic and flashy combat, itemization, a big world, a captivating story and amazing music.

For me it was one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences, sometimes it actually felt like I was playing a show/movie. In a good way.

Define real. It has items with different stats, status effects, cosmetics, a ton of skills to unlock and a combo system where skills will affect eachother in chains, allowing for big finishes.

There is also your party set-up.

Have u play Octopath Traveler 2? There is 8 characters u can choose as main character, and then u can recruit the rest 7 character on your journey. Each character have their personal quest like Dragon Age, they also have party banter you can mix 2 class/job like Fell Seal, equip different passive skill aswell

  4. Modding Community: Some games have strong modding communities that can enhance or expand character customization options.

  5. Graphics and Art Style: Consider the visual style of the game, as some players prefer realistic graphics while others enjoy stylized art.

Top Recommendations:

  1. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

    • Customization: Extensive character creation options including race, appearance, and skill trees.
    • Modding: Strong modding community for additional customization.
  2. Cyberpunk 2077

    • Customization: In-depth character creation with options for appearance, cyberware, and skills.
