What Redditors are Saying

Best Organic Makeup Removers

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is frequently recommended as an effective and natural makeup remover. Many users praise its ability to remove eye makeup effortlessly while also being cost-effective [3:1][4:1]. It is particularly noted for its gentle properties, making it suitable for sensitive skin [3:6]. However, some caution against using coconut oil due to potential breakouts [4:5].

Cleansing Balms and Oils

Cleansing balms and oils are popular choices for those looking to avoid harsh makeup removers. Products like Farmacy Green Clean and ELF Makeup Removing Balm are highly praised for their effectiveness without stripping the skin [5:1]. The Clinique Makeup Remover Balm is another favorite, known for its ability to melt makeup away easily [5:3]. These products often serve as the first step in a double cleansing routine, although some users find them sufficient on their own [5:2].

Micellar Water

Micellar water is a widely used option for removing makeup, especially eye makeup. Garnier's micellar water is mentioned multiple times, with users recommending the waterproof version for better results [1:4][1:6]. While some users find micellar water effective, others feel it requires more product to fully remove makeup [2:2][5:5].

Olive Oil and Other Natural Oils

Olive oil is another natural alternative that works well for removing makeup. Users appreciate its effectiveness and affordability [4:5][4:7]. Other oils, such as mineral oil or baby oil, are also suggested for their ability to break down makeup without causing irritation [4:1][4:4].

Reusable Makeup Remover Cloths

For those seeking zero waste options, reusable makeup remover cloths are recommended. These cloths work effectively without the need for additional products, reducing waste and chemical exposure [3:2][3:3]. They can be used in conjunction with natural oils for added effectiveness.

When choosing an organic makeup remover, consider your skin type and any sensitivities you may have. Opt for cold-pressed and organic versions of oils where possible to ensure purity and quality.

How do you remove eye makeup, eyeliner, and mascara without:

  1. Scrubbing the heck out of your eyes with face wash because tugging is bad for the skin
  2. Without getting soap or makeup in your eyes and making it burn
  3. Having so much residue leftover even though you cleansed and rinsed it 3 times
  4. Without a makeup remover wipe because apparently those are bad for you too
  5. And not be harsh on the skin to do everyday

Seriously how???

Cleansing oils. They go on oily and wash off with water. You still have to massage them into your lashes, but you don’t have to be brutal.

I swear by the Banilla Co Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm. The trick is to massage it over the face until it melts completely before adding water. Once you introduce water it quits breaking down the makeup and just dissolves. I follow it up with a cleanser and good to go.

Favorite eye makeup remover?

The one I keep going back to is the La Roche Posay eye makeup remover. It is dual phase but doesn’t leave any residue or sting. And hasn’t given me millia or any reactions. Oh and it takes off my gel eye liner in just one swipe. Of course now it’s old out/ not available on Amazon or the LRP store online.

So what are you all using for eye makeup? Micellar water doesn’t work for me and I feel like I need to use a lot of product to get stuff off. But it could also be that I’m using it wrong. Open to suggestions/ recommendations.

I use coconut oil to remove eye makeup and it works like magic! I use little reusable face cloths for the rest of my face and just the oil on my eyes after I wash the rest of my face. You only need a tiny bit so it's very cost effective, but not exactly zero waste..

Hello Frugal Friends! Can anybody help me identify something I can use as eye make up remover? Especially for my thick eyeliner and mascara. I have grown really sick of buying bottles of eye make up remover. They’re so expensive and don’t last very long.

I hate the wipes too, they irritate my eyes and they’re so wasteful.

Thank you, Frugal Kings and Queens!

What’s your favorite makeup remover and why? Looking for options!

Posted by [deleted] · in r/MakeupAddiction · 3 years ago

So I’m totally planning on ditching my makeup wipes to a good cleansing balm/oil. Either is fine, the reason why I recently started using neutrogena’s hydro boost makeup removing oil and loved the way it made my skin feel. I do not get the same feeling when I use makeup wipes, then again I used equates wipes when even the most sensitive version rubbed the moisture off my face and made it feel super strippy. I hate it. I’ve been looking into investing in j* star’s make me melt makeup balm remover, or peach and lilly’s makeup removing oil. What’s your favorite drugstore/high end remover. I want to get the best of my money and not go through bottles. Like what I mean is if I pay 36$ I expect to get a nice sized amount of it. I also wear waterproof mascara & other stuff if that matters, I have an oily/normal skintype. Mostly oily in t-zone.

I only use cleansing balms/oil now. Since trying them I can't go back to anything else. The way they remove makeup so easily without stripping my skin is just bananas. I have several favorites I will list for you and I hope you find one you love! Also, I just want to mention that a lot of people use these in a two step double cleanse but I do not. I do not need a second cleanse after using any of the following.

Eve Lom-This is my HG and I love it so much. It comes with a muslin cloth for removing and also includes a little routine (which you can do with any cleanser, this one just includes the instructions in the package) that makes it feel even more elevated. This one is super pricey but it only takes a little so it does last. I only buy it when I can find it at least half off which Macy's offers fairly often. This one has a VERY STRONG smell that puts a lot of people off. The way this one makes my skin feel is beyond amazing and makeup just melts off.

Farmacy-This is a lot of people's HG and I love it so much. In my opinion it is a little pricey too but again it does not take much so it does last. I do not see this one on sale very often. This one works like a charm and dissolves even waterproof makeup for me with zero issues.

Clinique Take the Day Off Cleaning Balm-I love this one too. Works great and dissolves all my makeup with zero effort. Has no smell (to me) and is priced about the same as other mid brand makeup removers. This one goes on sale for half off occasionally as well which is when I try to grab it. Solid product with no complaints and one that I am always happy to use.

Elf Holy Hydration Cleansing Balm-This one is a great one to try first to see if you like cleansing balms. It has a similar consistency to the Clinique one and works really well. It is only $10.

Elemis Pro Collagen Cleansing Balm-Very expensive with a STRONG smell but works beautifully. This one has more of an ointment like consistency and I like it a lot. You can find this one on Mercari a lot in the smaller size because it comes in subscription beauty boxes fairly often.

DHC Cleansing Oil-This is the OG cleansing oil. It is a Japanese brand that was oil cleansing before oil cleansing was cool. Extremely affordable and works like a charm. Highly recommend!

Anyway I am sure tons of people will chime in with great suggestions, these are just my favorites. I hope you find one you love too!

Dude the CLINIQUE makeup remover balm in the purple container. You won't ever look back. It feels so freakin good on the skin and I even get excited to take my makeup off at the end of the day. It melts the makeup right off and you don't even need a lot of product. I highly doubt it'll make you more oily because it does take everything off.

Even after that though I still wash my face with my normal face wash and exfoliate my skin twice a week but that's just me :)

Makeup remover?

Hi all, I am looking for an environmentally friendly (so not makeup remover wipes) but more inexpensive option to use as makeup remover. I've been using Be Natural Organics micellar cleansing water which is great but more expensive than I'd like at $20.00 for 12 fl oz. I thought about diluted castile soap which I use as body wash and don't find drying but might that still be drying on the face even diluted? Any ideas?

Thank you!

Jojoba oil. You can get a 4oz bottle of the oranic stuff for like, less than $15 and it lasts FOREVER. Like you only need to put a drop or two on your hand or face to dissolve all the makeup.

I like jojaba cause it doesnt clog my pores like olive or coconut oil, but you could try those as well. Also almond oil or apricot oil might be an option.

You will need to cleanse with soap after.

Nursing pads make excellent face wipes. If you don’t have any, flannel baby blankets work well too, cut into squares and hemmed. Just wash them in a bag so they don’t get sucked into your machine like baby socks.

I still purchase micellar water but I use garnier and it’s more like $12 a bottle.

But I love hado labo cleansing oil. You buy the pump bottle once and buy refill bags. Cleansing oils have a bit of emulsifier in them so they rinse easier than regular oil.

I really like Clinique’s cleansing balm. It does a great job getting off my makeup without stripping the moisture from my face.

I’ve also found that using a little bit of face oil on my dry face before cleansing has done just as well. I use the Trader Joe’s Vitamin E oil, which is really gentle on my skin, removes my eye makeup, and you really can’t beat the price.

Came here to say just this. ❤️ The Clinique balm is so good!

I’ve used random face oils as waterproof remover in a pinch too (OP you definitely need to double cleanse after that)… but for me at least I tend to get bad stinging when it inevitably gets into my eyes (I tightline with liquid liner so I have to really get into the lashline/base)? Love that the magic Clinique balm doesn’t sting.

  1. Ingredients: Look for products with natural, organic ingredients like coconut oil, jojoba oil, aloe vera, and chamomile. Avoid synthetic fragrances, parabens, and sulfates.

  2. Skin Type Compatibility: Choose a remover that suits your skin type. For example, oil-based removers are great for dry skin, while gel-based options may be better for oily or acne-prone skin.

  3. Effectiveness: Ensure the product effectively removes makeup, including waterproof formulas. Check reviews for user experiences regarding its efficacy.

  4. Sensitivity: If you have sensitive skin, opt for fragrance-free and hypoallergenic options to minimize irritation.

  5. Packaging: Consider eco-friendly packaging to align with organic and sustainable values.
