What Redditors are Saying

Best Remover for Waterproof Makeup

TL;DR

  • Clinique's "Take the Day Off" line and Lancome's Bi-Facil are highly recommended.
  • Garnier Micellar Water with the blue cap is a popular choice.
  • Oil-based removers, such as coconut oil or grapeseed oil, are effective but may require a second cleanse.

Oil-Based Removers

Oil-based makeup removers are often recommended for waterproof makeup. Products like Clinique's "Take the Day Off" line, including their cleansing balm and eye makeup remover, are praised for their effectiveness [5:1]. Lancome's Bi-Facil is another popular option that combines oil and water to effectively remove waterproof makeup without irritating the eyes [1:2], [5:1]. Users also recommend using natural oils like coconut oil [3:4] and grapeseed oil [2:5], though it's important to follow up with a foaming cleanser to avoid residue.

Micellar Water

Garnier Micellar Water with the blue cap is frequently mentioned as an effective product for removing waterproof makeup [1:4], [2:2], [5:6]. It contains oil, which helps break down stubborn makeup, and users suggest pressing a soaked pad on the eyes for a few minutes to enhance its effectiveness [5:3].

Cleansing Balms and Towelettes

Cleansing balms like the Heimish All Clean Balm [4:2] and Beauty of Joseon Cleansing Balm [4:3] are recommended for their ability to dissolve waterproof makeup. These products are generally used as part of a double-cleansing routine, where they are followed by a water-based cleanser to ensure all residues are removed. Clinique's makeup remover towelettes are also noted for their convenience and effectiveness [5:1].

Drugstore Options

For those seeking more affordable options, Neutrogena's Oil-Free Makeup Remover is highlighted as a drugstore product that effectively removes waterproof makeup [5:4]. Bioderma Sensibio eye makeup remover is another budget-friendly choice that is currently on sale [5:5].

Additional Tips

When using any makeup remover, it can be helpful to let the product sit on the skin for a minute or two before wiping off, allowing it to break down the makeup more effectively [5:3]. Conditioning lashes with an oil or lash serum after removal can help counteract any drying effects from waterproof mascara [5:3].

Good makeup removers?

ORIGINAL POST

I have nyx liquid eyeliner and it’s waterproof which I love because it stays on all day and I don’t have to worry about it smudging or anything like that. The only issue is that when I need to take it off it won’t come off. I use micellar water as a makeup remover but I need to scrub in order to get the makeup off. Someone suggested to use an oil based remover instead but I have no idea what I’m looking for when it comes to makeup remover. Does anyone have any brands or products they recommend that can get off waterproof eyeliner?

Bifacil. Micellar water irritates my eyes. As an oily remover, Bifacil always gets the job done.

If in US, I often get it for less during Ulta 21 days of beauty sales (usually March & September). Also used to get those holiday kits from Lancome. Both bring the price down.

I use the Garnier micellar water makeup remover with the blue top and it removes everything. I pour some in my hands and gently rub it all over my face especially my eyes. I then wipe it off with a wet microfiber makeup remover cloth (buy them for pretty affordable on Amazon). It does have oil in it and you have to shake it before use. I also double cleanse, but I use a gentle cleanser like Cerave hydrating cleansing lotion or the cetaphil one. Hope this helps.

Yeah I came to say this, I remove my makeup with Micellar water then wash my face with Cerave Cleanser. Usually gets rid of all the makeup.

There’s several really great oil cleansers on the market these days. Here are a few I’ve tried that I recommend. Note that I use these as a makeup removal/first cleanse, and always follow up with a second cleanse using a foaming wash (currently loving Cerave hydrating cream-to-foam, if you were wondering)

  • Ponds Cold Cream, a classic and accessible both in price and location, definitely needs a second cleanse,
  • Hada Labo oil cleanser, affordable but probably have to buy online
  • Shu Uemura oil cleanser, expensive but effective, could probably skip the second cleanse on light makeup days, and all their varieties smell lovely.
  • Farmacy cleansing balm, also pricey but effective, they make both a scented and unscented version, and tend to release mini 3-sets of LE scents around the holidays. Another one that you could get away with skipping a second cleanse.

Some cleansers I have tried, but don’t recommend for one reason or another:

  • Neutrogena Oil Cleanser, affordable and accessible, but smelled funny and had to use a second cleanse as it left a slight residue. I just didn’t enjoy it, but i guess id buy it in a pinch.
  • DHC Oil cleanser, cheap, effective, but their CEO has repeatedly made hateful and discriminatory comments against Koreans, so I refuse to buy from them.

You’re supposed to use an oil cleanser and then follow up with a foaming cleanser…

Grapeseed oil. It's light, easy to wash off, doesn't clog pores. 🙂

I’ll try that out ! Do you know what aisle/store I can find it at ? I’m very new to mascara so I really appreciate the advice ❤️

It's usually in the body care and makeup aisle. A 4oz bottle of organic oil is less than $10 usually.

The micellar eye make up removers work pretty well for me. The ones that have a micellar water part and an oily part that you have to shake together.

Alternatively you can use a gentle foaming cleanser after your oil cleanser, that should get rid of the residue.

Can you recommend a gentle eye make up remover for waterproof mascara. I live somewhere that has super humid summers so I have to add a layer of waterproof mascara over my regular mascara to stop it smudging or transferring to my eye lids. Problem is it’s hard to remove and I don’t like to wash my face with any sort of foam or soap as I get break outs. I’d love a good cleanser to take off the mascara.

I find using warm-to-hot water and a microfibre facecloth (I used to have one called a Magic Eraser but actually you can just buy the equivalent at a normal drugstore) works way better before the before using liquid or oil removers. Even waterproof mascara seems to go easier in this way, and certainly most eyeliner and shadow. Then follow with the remover or just cleanser. I love Erborian’s oil based one.

Okay dramatic eye lovers.... best remover??

Posted by LoveMy3Kitties · in r/MakeupAddiction · 6 months ago

Fellow eye makeup lovers... team 5 coats of mascara lovers.... glitter lovers 😍 I am desperate for eye makeup remover suggestions!!

I often work weird swing shifts at my job and am lacking sleep-- and taking off my eye makeup at night often feels entirely exhausting and annoying. I really need an eye makeup remover that I can apply or take off with cotton pads. I make a giant mess of water trying to wash my face at the sink at night so I rely heavily on cleansing waters for nighttime cleansing, and use my foamy cleaners when I shower in the morning.

I am desperate for recommendations that will take off all my mascara, liquid liner, and glittery eye makeup easier when I'm tired and grumpy at night after work and have to work closing shift/then open shift next day 🥺 Lately I've been having such a struggle removing all my mascara (not even waterproof) that I end up with dry and irritated eyelids too 🤕 Bonus points for drugstore options, but I'd love to hear any favorites! Please help 💗🥲 Thank you!!!! 💜💝

Lancome one is really good. Unfortunately it’s pricey :( tbh that’s the only one I have liked so far. Most of them really don’t do much other than irritate your eyes. Try Korean ones, may be they work well

I usually just use cleansing oil to take my make up off (including mascara) and then use another water based cleanser to clean ( basically double cleansing).

4 upvotes on reddit
LoveMy3Kitties · OP · 6 months ago

Thank you!!!! Which cleansing oil is your favorite?

My friend heard my struggles and recently gifted me a Korean cleansing balm which has worked really well-- it would work way better though if I washed it off with water over the sink, so I know it is my user error/user stubbornness lol 🥲💜

I still need to go over it with cotton pads soaked in cleansing water but otherwise it has been the best one I've tried so far. It's called Heimish All Clean Balm.

Hear me out, Olive oil. I just put like a nickel sized amount in the palm of my hand and dip my fingers into it and them rub it onto my eyelids and eye makeup. Then, when it's all broken up I take a very warm (not hot, don't burn yourself) wet wash cloth, wring out most of the water and wipe away all your makeup off. No watery, splash mess. Toss the cloth in laundry hamper.

This method is called oil cleansing method and can be used with jojoba, coconut oil if you prefer. Then, I literally put cream on my face, put on my glasses and get ready for bed.

I have dry sensitive skin and it works well for me. My lashes are longer and my skin is less red, softer overall since I stopped using Neutrogena makeup wipes.

LoveMy3Kitties · OP · 6 months ago

Thank you!!!!! I've been thinking of trying castor oil. I have oily acne-prone skin so I've only hesitantly tried coconut oil before when I was in a pinch. I don't wear a ton of face makeup, so I'm feeling a lot more brave to oil cleanse just around my eyes to save my irritated eyelids 💓🥲

2 upvotes on reddit
nervous_piglet001 · 6 months ago

My honest opinion. Using regular oil is hard to take off. Cleansing oils contain emulsifiers specifically to do this job. They emulsify with water and hence come off when you wash. Considering you’re trying to remove eye make up, you don’t want to clog the pores at lash line and cause styes.

Agree - blue cap. I saturate a cotton pad, hold it to my eye for 3-4 minutes (while I’m scrolling on my phone, watching TV etc) and it removes EVERYTHING. Then I go in and wash my face with my cleanser to remove any residual micellar water. Btw if you wear waterproof regularly I’d also recommend conditioning your lashes with an oil/ lash serum after this step bc waterproof mascara/the removal process can be drying .

Clinique Take the Day off line has an eye makeup remover. Their original cleansing balm is great as well. Lancome also has their Bi-facil eye makeup remover.

Some other options are the Go Off makeup removing spray from One/Size, the All Time Prime face oil from GXVE, Makeup Forevers Gentoe Eye Gel remover, and Cliniques Take the Day off remover towlettes (wipes). The face oil from GXVE is marketed primarily as a primer oil, but it cuts through most waterproof makeup like nobodys business. Would definitely put these options on a cotton pad and massage to take off eye makeup.

Also, be sure to use a regular cleanser afterward. These only remove makeup. They do not fully cleanse and may leave some residue.

Double cleansing with an oil or balm followed by your regular cleanser. This is the way to truly remove all makeup and sunscreen, which micellar water can't do.

Affordable- ELF, Byoma, Versed are all good options. It may be a little over $10 but they last a good while.

Best makeup remover for super waterproof mascara?

Hi, Sephora fam! Hoping you can help me find my new holy grail makeup remover for VERY stubborn waterproof mascara. I love my mascara—it’s Japanese, wears like iron, and holds a curl beautifully—but it’s hell to get off. I used to use a fantastic Laura Mercier remover, but they don’t make it anymore…and the Almay one I bought recently is awful (stings my eyes and doesn’t remove worth a damn). Anyone have any removers they swear by? Doesn’t have to be Sephora. Thanks in advance!

best remover for waterproof makeup

Key Considerations for Removing Waterproof Makeup:

  1. Type of Remover: Choose between oil-based removers, micellar water, or dual-phase formulas. Oil-based removers are particularly effective for waterproof makeup.

  2. Skin Type: Consider your skin type. If you have sensitive skin, look for gentle, fragrance-free options to avoid irritation.

  3. Effectiveness: Look for products specifically labeled as "waterproof makeup removers" to ensure they can effectively break down long-lasting formulas.

  4. Ease of Use: Consider how easy the product is to apply and remove. Some removers come in pump bottles or wipes for convenience.

  5. Hydration: Opt for removers that also hydrate the skin, preventing dryness after makeup removal.

Recommendations:

  • Bifacial Makeup Remover: The Lancome Bi-Facil is a dual-phase formula that effectively removes waterproof makeup without leaving a greasy residue. Shake well before use for optimal results.

  • Micellar Water: Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water (with oil) is a great option for a gentle yet effective removal of waterproof makeup. It’s suitable for all skin types and doesn’t require rinsing.

  • Cleansing Balm: Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm is another excellent choice. It melts away waterproof makeup and transforms into a silky oil, making it easy to rinse off.

Using these products will help ensure that your skin is clean and free from makeup without causing irritation or dryness.
