What Redditors are Saying

Best Places to Sell Pokémon Trading Cards

TL;DR

  • eBay and TCGPlayer are top choices for selling cards with higher returns but require more effort.
  • Local game stores offer convenience but may not provide competitive prices.

Online Platforms

eBay is frequently mentioned as a good platform for selling Pokémon cards, especially if you're looking to move them quickly. It allows for competitive pricing and offers tracked shipping options [2:1][5:1]. However, sellers should be prepared for the time investment required, as it can feel like a part-time job [5:3]. TCGPlayer is another popular choice, praised for its ease of use and active marketplace [4:1][2:6].

Local Game Stores

Selling cards to local game stores is a low-effort option, but it typically results in lower returns since these stores need to make a profit [1:1][5:5]. It's recommended to price check before selling to ensure you get a fair deal [1:2]. This option is best if you prefer not to deal with shipping and want a quick sale [5:6].

Social Media and Online Communities

Facebook groups and Instagram have active Pokémon communities where you can showcase and sell your collection [5:1][4:2]. Reddit's r/pkmntcgtrades is also suggested as a fast-moving and reliable community for trading and selling cards [5:2][5:4].

Considerations for Selling

Before selling, it's crucial to assess the value of your cards, especially if they include rare or first edition items [3:6]. PriceCharting.com is recommended for tracking card values [2:3]. Sellers should also consider potential fees associated with platforms like eBay, which can affect overall profits [1:1][2:5].

Overall, choosing the best place to sell your Pokémon cards depends on your priorities—whether it's maximizing profit, minimizing effort, or leveraging community connections.

ORIGINAL POST

I have around 300+ cards and I’m looking to sell them, just wondering where the best place is to do so.

ShadowMario8 · 6 years ago

A good place to start would be local card stores / Facebook groups. Just be cautious as card stores are businesses in the end and are trying to turn a profit. Just make sure to price check before you sell anything and you should be fine.

Beyond that the best place would be eBay.

anything rare because if it is just commons and uncommons with some rares, it really isnt worth much. at that point your better off just giving it away.

You can sell 100 bulk cards for 10$ pretty easy. There's always parents who just want lots of cards for their young kids.

True, however if your selling old cards that they cant even use then your just taking advantage.

Highest value, high-effort on your part: Sell to players/collectors in real life avenues (Pokemon Leagues, Facebook = Virbank City Pokemart, Craigslist, etc.). You'll have to self-assess value and develop credibility on the online-type forums like Facebook.

High-value, moderate-high effort on your part: Ebay/TCGPlayer. The former is slightly more forgiving to new sellers. It's hard to start up when you have no feedback. You will lose about 13% in fees.

Low-value, low effort on your part: Local game stores. Expect to lose a lot of the value (they buy cards at like 30-70% of its market value, usually on the lower end at 30ish).

My personal method:

-Have a trade binder for IRL (But I play the game also, so it's more convenient)

-Sell excess rare cards on Ebay/TCGPlayer. You lose to fees but it's much more palatable to me than using the subreddit (I'd like to say good things about it, but my experience is it can be a lot of wasted time) or trying to develop a rep on Virbank City

-Sell bulk common/uncommons of no value to my local game store.

Best websites to sell Pokemon cards?

Posted by privatenuggets · in r/Flipping · 3 years ago

I have probably… I don’t know, a couple hundred or so Pokemon cards that I would love to sell. Some are older and rare, so they’re worth a good amount (1st gen Pikachu, Zapdos to name a few) and some are newer. Are there websites that are good options for selling or should I try to find some local brick-and-mortar shops that’ll take them?

B&M is probably your last resort worst option. If you don't want to sell on eBay or tcgplaher, then shop around for online buylists.

i don’t mind selling on ebay, i just didn’t know if the market was great there.

Ebay allows you to send with a regular envelope for under a dollar for a few cards, provided you use a hard shell of some sort.

Even with fees this is sometimes a better deal than selling on other platforms. Always calculate your shipping and platform fees.

You generally get a bit more than buylist, but you are also putting in more effort.

Just look at the sold section which shows how many have been sold recently. You can then search by individual card to see the market price for it.

Oh yeah, i sold em a hefty buylist of ygo cards qouted at 150 and they miraculously lost two of the most expensive cards on the list and knocked it down to 100 bucks. Skeeves and scumbags, i feel bad for anyone who does business with them moving forward.

I use PriceCharting.com which is actually really accurate and has an app where you can put your collection and track the prices of your collection so I really recommend price charting. You can only make a collection on the app though

It looks like you're wondering if those cards have any value. Generally speaking, if it's a First Edition, Holographic or Promo card it's worth looking into. Take a look at our Pokemon card evaluation guide to see how to determine the value of your cards. Always know the value of every card you have before selling to avoid getting low-balled. Or maybe you have a question about grading that our Grading FAQ might help answer.

I do eBay, TCGplayer, and my own Instagram and I find that TCGplayer has the easiest time selling cards. I put anything from 25 cents to $50 a card up there and most times my stock gets destroyed which is pretty cool because claim sales take a lot of energy. My vote is TCGplayer

For the best returns probably eBay but it requires the most time and effort. Stores most likely aren't going to buy it at the going rate as they have to make a profit. The only issue with eBay is PayPal will almost always side with the buyer.

As someone else said you can also try your local game store but some are better than others there too.

eBay is a major time investment and is more like a part time job honestly. I try selling only a few cards here and there over a few months, but it still becomes a hassle. I’ve had cards stolen on eBay and damaged in the mail causing me to send extra cards etc. you name it. I’ve since started to sell to my LCS and people who shop there. If I ever needed to sell my entire collection fast, reddit would probably be the best and safest place to do it

2 upvotes on reddit
ilovecoolthings · 6 years ago

If your looking for something quick and to not deal with shipping I’d check out a local game store. You might find some cool cards while your there.

1 upvotes on reddit
DustinTheGreat1 · 6 years ago

eBay is good if your looking to move it quick. Just make sure you have a competitive price.

Instagram has a big Pokémon community. If you make an account you can start showing off your collection and selling your collection. Will take time but it’s possible and the community is great. Usually has the best prices too.

I’d also recommend eBay and filtering by sold items so you can see actual recent paid prices for items. It gives you a feel for not just what they should be worth, but what they’re truly selling for

This one has a few outliers but looks mostly like $20-60 for mistys tears

I would definitely price check them and do a quality check if they are vintage and going for a decent price. Grading can be intimidating and is usually not worth the effort if you’re new to the scene (IMO). Once you have a good sense Id either list them on FB Marketplace (expect grifters and if you sell be safe about meetups and such), Ebay list them as singles or as a lot (auction is probably best), or take them to a card store. I think selling on FB Marketplace is probably gonna get you the best price without fees and taxes but it’s the most risky option. Ebay is your middle ground of effort, pricing, and risk. Your local card store should give you anywhere from 60-75% card value but it varies and they might not be that interested so they’ll probably low ball you.

Best place to sell Pokemon cards?

Posted by ZeroTwo02 · in r/greenville · 6 months ago

My parents are moving out of my childhood home and I was able to get my brother and I's sizeable collection of Pokemon cards. Mostly Series 1+2, plus a smaller collection of cards from my childhood, Gen 3-4 mostly. I know Pokemon TCG is huge right now, so I want to get these sold. While I still dearly love Pokemon, I truly do not care about the TCG.

I was able to go through all of the cards and based solely on which ones looked worth something I scanned in on TCGPlayer and referenced some values.

I have quite a lot of cards and these are mostly 20+ year old cards in great condition. Though I know of local game stores, I don't frequent them so I'm not sure if any are untrustworthy or anything. I want to make sure I'm getting a fair deal.

tl;dr: trustworthy place to sell all my old Pokemon cards?

I know little to nothing about Pokémon cards. Two of my kids (13 and 10) are all about it. If you’re willing to consider selling some at a fair price, I’d love to grab some around what a card shop would buy them for…which again, I know nothing about.

If not, my son likes the Bryan’s card shop over by the mall. Borderlands is a long time Greenville business that is trustworthy.

I will say the place on pleasantburg apparently took advantage of my son when he was with his grandma and ripped him off on a card but I don’t know if that was an anomaly or not.

So I've bought/sold large Magic the Gathering collections in the past and the one thing I didn't do properly back in the day was separating the value from the bulk. Dozens if not hundreds of hours of my life I wish I had back.

For instance, if there was a card that was worth $.50 and one worth $.37, I thought there was a meaningful difference. There's not and the "bulk" rates are going to feel artificially low but that's the business.

Once I separated out the actual worthwhile rares from the rest, it became a much more simple exercise of asking what % of TCG value. I'm far from an expert on Pokemon but I'd mentally start somewhere in and around the 50% of TCG player value as a very rough estimate. Your buyers all have overhead in terms of either a brick and mortar store or online marketplace fees. You could (potentially) get significantly more selling yourself but you're paying for the convenience by leaving margins on the table.

If you go in with realistic expectations, it's a pretty straightforward process. If you thought you'd get closer to 80-90+% of value like we thought we would back in the day, it's going to be a bad time.

If you have desirable cards and they’re not selling, the pictures are either bad or you’re priced to high. Could also be if you have no feedback it looks like a scam if you’re selling high value stuff. If that’s the case you’d need to sell a handful of lower value cards to build up your feedback.

If you don't want to do any work at all, your local card shop will probably buy them for a fraction of the retail value.

If you would rather maximize, you can sort the cards generally by holo and non holo and check prices on the holo cards. From there, you can either sell them individually or post them in bulk online to see who might be interested.

best place to sell pokemon trading cards

Key Considerations for Selling Pokémon Trading Cards:

  1. Marketplaces:

    • eBay: A popular platform for selling cards, allowing you to reach a large audience. You can auction or set a fixed price.
    • TCGPlayer: Specifically designed for trading card games, it offers a marketplace tailored for Pokémon cards, making it easy to list and sell.
    • Facebook Marketplace: Great for local sales, allowing you to avoid shipping costs and meet buyers in person.
    • Local Game Stores: Some stores buy cards or offer consignment options, providing a way to sell locally.
  2. Condition and Grading:

    • Ensure your cards are in good condition. Consider getting valuable cards graded by companies like PSA or Beckett, as graded cards can sell for significantly higher prices.
  3. Pricing:

    • Research current market prices for your cards using price guides or completed listings on eBay to set competitive prices.
  4. Shipping:

    • If selling online, factor in shipping costs and materials. Use protective sleeves and toploaders to ensure cards arrive safely.
  5. Community Engagement:

    • Join online forums or social media groups dedicated to Pokémon trading cards. Engaging with the community can help you find buyers and get advice on selling.

Recommendation: For a hassle-free experience and access to a dedicated audience, TCGPlayer is highly recommended. It provides tools for pricing and selling, and you can reach serious collectors. If you prefer local sales, consider using Facebook Marketplace or visiting local game stores for a more personal touch.
