California Coast
California is a prime location for sea lion sightings. San Diego, particularly La Jolla, offers guaranteed views of sea lions and seals [2:1]. Monterey and San Francisco are also recommended, with the latter's Pier 39 being a popular spot where dozens of sea lions can be seen daily
[3:1]
[3:3]. The Fitzgerald Marine Reserve near Half Moon Bay provides opportunities to see sea lions in a less touristy environment
[3:2].
Oregon Coast
The Oregon coast has several locations where sea lions can be spotted. Newport is a notable area, with the Sea Lion Dock offering live cam views [1:1]. Lincoln City and Astoria are also mentioned as having sea lions visible from certain vantage points
[1:3]
[1:5].
Laguna Beach Area
In Laguna Beach, Crescent Bay Beach is known for its Seal Rock, where seals and sea lions often take refuge [4:1]. Dana Point Harbor is another location where sea lions have been seen recently, providing an entertaining spectacle as they bark and splash around
[4:3].
Marina del Rey
Marina del Rey is a convenient spot for viewing sea lions without much walking. They are frequently found near Fisherman's Village on the docks and in the channel inlet [5:1]
[5:2].
Whale Watching Tours
For those willing to venture out onto the water, whale watching tours offer excellent chances to see sea lions and dolphins. Tours departing from places like Ventura Harbor to Santa Cruz Island are highly recommended [5:6].
Hello Guys,
I need help for locals/tourists who were able to spot sea lions along the coast of Oregon. I will be travelling from Florence to Cannon Beach today(May 26th) and would like to know if anyone was able to spot sea lions (within last two days) in between this area?
I checked out Sea Lion Caves reviews on Google and it looks like the visitors were able to spot 1 or 2 sea lions and it was not worth the price ($20 ish) for such experience.
I'd just like to spot the sea lions if visible from a cliff and travel back to Seattle by the end of day. As I'm short on time I'm not looking for too much time consuming activities.
My search showed these two results;
Would appreciate your insights/help.
"Newport Sea Lions" is an Insta page, you can check there but as of 3 days ago, yep there's a ton of them there.
Taft in Lincoln City has a bunch of seals. So after checking out Newport sea loins head a little north to Mo's and look across the Siletz river outlet there is normally a bunch of them hanging out on the rich people island.
Bay front in newport, by restaurant Clearwater, tons of them
They are gone for mating season. The docks will be empty until after mating season when the bachelors return.
Saw two yesterday but not the usual activity. Orcas probably spooked them but also time of year they start to move south.
Astoria. Immediately west of Pier 39 in the harbor.
Was just there yesterday and can confirm.
This is the live cam link to the Sea Lion Dock in Newport. https://clearwaterrestaurant.com/live-cam
The boys have gone south to Cali to meet the ladies and should be back around the first week of August.
Not a marine biologist but I am a pinniped fan and sadly I live in the Midwest. Looking for my next road trip. I know California is a good place to go but are there any comparable places besides that? Maybe east coast or eastern Canada? I really appreciate it!
Monterey/SF would be my recommendation for that interest, particularly with the aquarium, but you can definitely find seals in Maine and it's beautiful (I assume the same is true for the Canadian coast, but haven't been). Maybe post this on the r/travel sub - there's a lot more people on there.
Any state/province on the west coast. You’ll find gray seals in the Maritimes, but that’s about it for pinnipeds.
San Diego/ La Jolla.
Entire Sea Lion rookery, as well as seals. I know, California. But it’s guaranteed.
Planning an October trip to California and we want to site see places with lots of California sea lions. Any suggestions on places that aren’t too crowded and more hidden from touristy people (like me lol)? We are planning on driving along the coast from San Diego to San Francisco.
Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in Moss Beach (near Half Moon Bay). About 30 mins south of San Francisco.
Sometimes docents are on hand to give some interesting insights and the tidal pools can be really fun to explore (check tide tables).
Please make sure to give the sea lions a wide berth, they need lots of distance.
This place is perfect. The tide pools are great fun and if you are lucky can see hundreds of seals during pupping season.
Non-touristic? Monterey. There’s a Coast Guard station with a pier near Monterey Fisherman’s wharf. Always tons of seals and sea lions there.
https://maps.app.goo.gl/vLiCSy6CpyCfpzTc6?g_st=ipc
Yeah, it’s kinda touristic, but nothing compared to San Francisco’s fisherman’s wharf.
I was there in October of last year and it was perfect. So many sea lions and not that many people. We walked along the pathway and couldn’t have asked for a better night.
If going to Santa Cruz you can also hit Año nuevo state park and see some elephant seals too
During the right time of year there are also harbor seals at the Santa Cruz pier. Those little guys are so cute. There were a lot when I was there in April.
The Marine Mammal Center is a research and rescue located in Sausalito. Tours are free but need to book a reservation.
https://www.marinemammalcenter.org/visit/getting-here
You can take a ferry from SF to Sausalito. Downtown Sausalito is a great place for lunch, shopping and galleries
The Sea Lions off Pier 39 operate their own schedule but dozens, if not super groups hang out there daily.
Go to the marine mammal center!
But you might also be surprised how not touristy that drive up Highway 1 is
Excellent suggestion!
Pier 39 or there are a dozen that usually hang around the Ft Mason Marina.
"Any suggestions on places that aren’t too crowded and more hidden from touristy people (like me lol)?"
Drive down the one in the fall.
Every beach is covered.
San Simeon especially.
My wife and I are headed to Laguna Beach in a week or so for our Babymoon. She really wants to see a Sea Lion. It is on her bucket list. No she doesn’t want to see a seal like others do she wants to see the giant lion things that bark. I’m trying to do it as a surprise and I understand that wildlife doesn’t just stay in one area and she doesn’t want to see it at a zoo. Is there a typical spot that might be good or maybe an online tracker or something. I tried finding something but they just say they end up on beaches or I suck at googling.
Thank you.
Take a whale watching tour out of newport harbor.
Sea lions hang out on docks and even boats around the harbor
There were a lot of sea lions at Dana Point Harbor by the boat docks. It was very entertaining to watched as they were barking, fighting (chest bumping), & splashing around. But I’m not sure if they are still there as we saw them few weeks ago.
Yea I live near DTDP and you can hear them barking practically every night 😂
Dana Point Harbor
This place
Have a lovely pre-baby day!
Hi,
Where can I drive to watch dolphins and / or sea lions from the roadside or with minimal walking? Trying to maximize my chances...
Thanks.
There are dolphins just off shore at Santa Monica pretty regularly. Not predictable but they move up and down the coast about 50 to 400ft out.
Sea lions hang out inl Marina del Rey harbor. There is a fishing bait barge permanently mored in the channel. They are there all the time.
There are also some rescue organizations like Marine animal care in san pedro where you can view them
You're likely to see at least a few sea lions sunning themselves in the marina at Marina del Rey, but dolphins are unlikely unless you're out on the water with a whale watching tour or something.
On the boat to the Channel Islands.
This is for real the best answer. I’ve seen whales, sea lions eating squid, thousands of dolphin, a basking shark. All on the trip out to one of the islands
This. Drive to Ventura harbor and catch the Island Packers boat to Santa Cruz Island and you are pretty much guaranteed to see dozens of dolphins dancing on the boat's wake. The tame island foxes are a bonus.
LA Zoo
Marina del Rey for the Sea Lions. They often hang near fisherman's village on the docks. They also hang out in the channel inlet and beg for food from the passing boats. There's a pod of dolphins that cruises the shoreline in Santa Monica, and when I see them, it's usually between SM canyon and Gladstone's. If you spend the day at the beach there-abouts, I'd say you've got a decent chance. Short walk from the parking lot either way.
I've never seen them and I've heard there are some at Marina Del Rey, is it true? I'll be visiting February for the record I mean if that matters.
Yes, MDR around Burton Chace or the LMU boat house are usually good bets. Ask a paddleboarder if they’ve seen any that day. I usually do every time I paddle in MDR.
There’s also a buoy near the SM Pier where they like to chill.
I went to Burton Chace today, there's a bunch of sea lions sunbathing on the docks!
Redondo Beach around the pier, I see at least one every time I go.
Channel Islands Harbor (Oxnard) or Ventura Harbor has lots of them. Easy free parking too.
Very true and a fun visit for locals but maybe a long drive for a visiting tourist who's trying to check off a lot of LA sights.
Agreed.
Since they really want to see sea lions, these harbors almost guarantee seeing them. For example, today I saw about 100-200 between two spots you can easily see from the shoreline. The harbors/marinas in LA can be hit an miss.
La Jolla
i saw 6-8 there yesterday...no guarantee they'll be there in february. they're usually near 'burton chace park'.
Hi! I was wondering where the best place to spot sea lions would be, especially around the downtown areas? Thanks!
"sea lion rock" aka Brin rock by the discovery island lighthouse every year in may.
You can often see them chasing sea antelope across the sea Serengeti
Fyi sea lions stink like compost and manure
I used to see them hanging around on the science buoy in Pat Bay, inland side of the peninsula. Was pretty funny to sail close. The big ones didn’t budge. And oh, yeah, the stink. Wow.
Ive seen them barking and swimming around out at Macaulay point park (which is worth a visit even without guarantee of sea lions and not too far of a bus ride on the 25!) If you hang out at the beaches around Dallas road that face port angeles you might see some too
My mom is in town and would like to see some. I've told her about how people see them here occasionally and was wondering if they were around and where would be a good place to look.
They are all over the dock across from Old Town and fishing/hunting around the confluence of American and Sacramento rivers.
Check out the Delta King Hotel! If you walk in through reception straight through to the river side of the boat (this has always been ok in the past, but be respectful of guests and try not to be loud) you can see the sea lions that lay on the dock on the opposite side of the river most days.
You can also see it from the boardwalk in Old Town Sac, but the boat is just a fun thing to check out. They have a bar on the top floor and a restaurant in the middle that are open to the public.
This. Pier outside STRS building across from old sac is the best place. Grab a meal at Delta King or ... Sorry was going to recommend rio city cafe but it's closed. F the city for neglecting that deck, it was our favorite place to take people from our of town.
There's none around currently but thanks for the heads up!
Actually, was just commenting that we hadn’t seen them on the river or the docks lately
Yeah, there's none here currently
Been a few weeks since I've seen any.
You'll see them more often in the fall when they are chasing the salmon. They hang out on the docks around Old Sac near Tower Bridge.
After a 15 year hiatus I have moved back to the PNW. However, Oly is new territory for me. My husband is from Mexico and has been so incredibly enamored by the nature here after living in the desert his whole life. It's honestly really endearing how excited this 40 year old man gets over every single bug, mushroom, bird, tree etc. Lol But, we hike a lot so that's easy to enjoy. I want to take him where he can see some marine and or larger wildlife. Is there a good spot to see the Sea Lions? Whale watching? Anything wildlife or nature sites or hikes that should be appreciated? Thanks in advance!
For seals you will want to go to Woodard Bay conservation area, take the trail north to the pier, that is a spot where seals will be, if you have a kayak or paddleboard that would be a plus. Sea Lions I believe are a rarer sight here but they do show up sometimes and sun bathe or sit on boats https://youtu.be/Jnw1sDmiwhk
Tolmie state park is also a great spot for marine life.
For whale watching you are going to want to be farther north by port angeles, there are lot of whale sightings going on right now https://www.king5.com/article/tech/science/environment/orcas/70-biggs-whale-salish-sea/281-2ee7580a-a42a-498f-90dd-fbb3accb758a
Thank you so much! I want to get him up to Bellingham soon, so we could do the whales when we're up that way. I wasn't sure if there was anything closer. I appreciate the details!
Yeah we have whales down here in Summer, if you can find whale spotting groups to get notifications on their locations that will increase your chances for down here.
While you’re up that way drive out along the Skagit river and watch the bald eagles.
In the summer, we get bioluminescent algae in Puget Sound. I like to go up to Boston Harbor at night and stir the water to see it.
Just a heads up they put up a gate and a big ole no trespassing sign. I keep meaning to go up and ask if I could have permission to come at night (I like to look at crabs lol) but haven’t done it yet.
That's a great idea! I'm going to make a note. A natural salmon run must be incredible in person.
Northwest Trek outside of Eatonville, Washington.
Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually Wildlife Reserve. I've seen many different birds, seals, sea lions, otters and more.
This place is super underrated. It must be one of the most productive and biodiverse places in the southern puget region. I can't imagine how beautiful it must have been before the highway was put in nearby.
Also the boardwalk is an absolute monster, it is super long and puts you wayyyyyyy out onto mudflat wetland habitat you could never get onto otherwise (too shallow to kayak, too muddy to walk).
The amount and diversity of birds alone you see here alone borders.
This place is the best. When I go there I see tons of birds. Eagles, hawks, herons, and tons of little birds including some golden/yellow ones I forget the name of. I also see a coyote almost every time I go there as well as tons of rabbits and elk.
This is a terrific place to see beaver, too, along with turtles and birds common to lakes and ponds.
I have a relative visiting from out of town and they want to see a seal. Any good recommendations? Thanks!
We do have Harbor Seals. I've had most luck at either Cornwall beach or the ferry terminal, but it's really hit or miss.
If you drive north about 30 min, there's a colony of about 100 seals that haul out on the far end of the dock at Semiahmoo Spit. You can get fairly close if you walk out at low tide, otherwise bring binoculars! Also, Blaine is super cute and I find that my visitors always get a kick out of seeing the Canadian border.
Semiahmoo Spit is excellent seal country.
I was about to comment this. I saw more seals out on that dock this summer than I've ever seen in my whole life. Big ones and little babies, they were so cute!
Yes!! I find that the pups are often closer too because they have a harder time hauling all the way up onto the dock, so they tend to haul out on the logs closer to shore. I'm also really into birding...it's such a great spot to see loons, Harlequin ducks and Brandts up close.
Are seels on the dock, year round?
I'm not sure if the salmon are running, but if they are, that's where the seals will be. I used to see them all the time by what is now the Granary building where Whatcom Creek debouches. Sometimes they even make it up into Maritime Heritage park when the eats are good.
I went to marinetime heritage park on Thursday and can confirm there are seals! There are even students studying them
So many on Friday too! There was one swimming around in one of the lil fish ladders too. I love those sea puppies.
Wow, I haven’t seen “debouches” in the wild much. Great word. The information is also probably the best bet for seeing a seal from shore. They come right up to the falls if the salmon are around, which I suspect they might be.
The best place by far is the Whatcom creek inlet, specifically next to the waterfront bar and grill. They also go further up the creek to the hatchery area, I was there the other day and saw 5 seals so I’m assuming salmon are in the creek.
You’ll mostly see harbor seals around the bay. Marine park, Maritime Heritage park, the ferry terminal and boulevard park are all good options to see them in a daily basis.
However, if you’re looking around salmon season (around now!) you can occasionally find a HUGE sea Lion chasing salmon up the mouth of Whatcom creek at maritime heritage. I watched a huge ripple the size of a car go underwater chasing salmon until a giant snarly sea Lion reared it’s head at the shore! Quiet a sight to see.
