Scotland
Scotland offers several excellent locations for seal watching. The Firth of Forth is a notable spot where seals can often be seen basking on rocks near Kirkcaldy [1:1]. Another recommended location is the Seal Shore Campsite, where sightings are almost guaranteed at low tide
[1:2]. Other Scottish locations include Morrisons Haven between Musselburgh and Prestonpans
[1:3], the south coast of Arran
[1:4], and the rocks below Connel Bridge near Oban
[1:5]. Newburgh Beach is also highly recommended, with frequent sightings reported
[1:9].
Oregon Coast
The Oregon Coast is another prime area for spotting seals. Depoe Bay is known for having seals in the bay and under the bridge [2:1]. Taft Beach offers views of seals across the water
[2:3], while Gold Beach allows you to see them from your car right off Highway 101
[2:4]. Siletz Bay in Lincoln City is another popular spot
[2:7]. For those interested in sea lions as well, the Sea Lion Caves north of Florence provide a great opportunity to observe these animals
[2:8].
Central Coast (California)
In California's Central Coast region, Simpson Reef in Coos Bay is a reliable spot to view sea lions, harbor seals, and elephant seals from a lookout [4:1]. Strawberry Hill is another location where harbor seals can be observed on offshore rocks
[4:3]. Additionally, Newport docks provide opportunities to see seals up close
[4:6].
General Tips and Considerations
When planning to see seals, it's important to respect their natural habitat and adhere to guidelines to avoid disturbing them. For example, the ZSL provides a Code of Conduct for interacting with marine mammals [5:1]. It's crucial to maintain a safe distance and not attempt to feed or disturb the seals, as this could lead to negative consequences for the animals
[5:2]

Hi guys. My wife and I would really love to see seals - common or grey.
Where and when would be the best place to see them. We're both retired, and live down in England, but would love to make a weeks holiday out of seal spotting.
Thanks in advance
EDIT: Thanks for all the suggestions. Sadly I could get sea-sick on a raft on a mill-pond, so anything to do with boats, is sadly a no-do.
South coast of Arran, lovely location for a holiday anyway.
Yeah, there's even a campsite down there called Seal Shore Campsite, and you're almost guaranteed to see them at low tide every morning and evening.
Exactly. And the whole island, apart from the seals, is very beautiful.
Seals can often be spotted in the Firth of Forth. I’ve seen them many times basking in rocks near Kirkcaldy.
We occasionally get one coming right up the Forth passed Stirling too
There are often some sleeping on the rocks at Morrisons Haven between Musselburgh and Prestonpans. I’ve seen them loads of times but can never get over how cool they are.
Boat trip out of Oban. Other suggestions look way more accessible though.
Also on the rocks below Connel bridge near Oban. At low tide
We saw many of them going with Callum's boat trip in Plockton. Fun little boat trip, our kids also loved it.
And it’s free if you don’t see them
Newburgh Beach
I have never not seen the seals at Newburgh. Hunnerds of the bastards.
hi!!
me and some friends are taking a road trip from california to portland at the end of march, and i really wanted to try to see some seals on the way over (we're taking 101)!! i was looking at seal rock as a place to visit to see seals, but am not sure if there will be any. do you all have better recommendations?
If you don't care that they are sea lions and not seals, the sea lion docks right next to the Clearwater Restaurant in Newport is the closest you will get to them.
Oregon Coast Aquarium in newport also has seals and eal lions, but in captivity.
The Sea Lion Caves just north of Florence is another must stop for seal/sea lion affectionados. You will see a ton, but from a distance.
Sea lion caves north of Florence. This.
Go to Taft. Head out to the beach. Look across the water. They'll be living their best fat seal life on that beach across the way.
how far onto the beach would i have to go? im in a wheelchair so getting too deep in the sand could be an issue
Check them out in Gold Beach. They are all over the harbor right off 101. You can see them without getting out of your car.
Google map Moe's clam chowder in Lincoln city. scroll west to see the walk area there will he seals and sea lions across the bay on the peninsula. it a fave spot to view them for many
If you’ve got someone to help push, the beach at Taft has 3 lockers with beach wheelchairs which are free to rent, just download the app listed on the lockers
I second this. Siletz Bay has a bunch
If you're also interested in sea lions, which I honestly don't know what the difference is, there's plenty of those in Newport. They just pile up on the docks and honk at each other. It's hilarious.
Sea lions are bigger, have ears, and they walk on their flippers. In case anyone was interested
And they for sure pile up on the docks and honk all day. It's one of my favorite places to take folks when they visit
Sea lions are big and they bark, harbor seals are smaller and usually spotted/gray. They aren’t as vocal like the sea lion.
There's always seals hanging out in the bay and under the bridge in Depoe Bay.
i’ve heard of people seeing seals (the animal, btw) and a person told me they saw a lot hauled out on some rocks here . in the sandbridge area but willing to drive a little. edit: Yes, seals can be spotted in or sandbridge. Only in winter months and a some times you’ll have to take a boat… I just wanna know if anyone knows a specific spot or something. or even the va beach area as a whole. Also i’ve been to the aquarium many times
The seals at the aquarium are in an outdoor enclosure before you enter the building so you can always see them for free if you need a seal fix
i did the behind the scenes seal tour of the va aquarium yesterday lol
I’m 45 years old, and I’ve been here my entire life. Whoever told you that is full of shit, straight up. Several weeks ago when there was one on the beach at the oceanfront, that’s the only time in my life I remember hearing about a seal here. When that happened, the aquarium had staff out there keeping everyone away, so even if we had them, you wouldn’t just be able to walk up and check them out.
25 years here never seen one but i’ve seen pics from family and friends and strangers , they are very rare on sand ridge beach but they like certain places on rocks in remote areas as a rule
58 life long resident only seen them at the aquarium or on tv.
Is someone confusing dolphins with seals? That's the only way I can make any sense here...
usually all the bars on Shore Dr…
I've never seen any wild seals here, only the occasional otter. They have seals at the aquarium, though
Went there for the behind the scenes yesterday , people there told me about places
My family and I are visiting the central coast this week and we love it so much! It’s already been a great experience. Our youngest child is in love with seals, and we’re hoping to see some from a fairly close distance. We’ve spotted them on the sand bars in Alsea Bay in Waldport, and we’ll be attending Skinny the Seal’s birthday party at the aquarium in Newport tomorrow (Tuesday), but does anyone know of a place around here where we might be able to have somewhat of an up close encounter with seals in the wild? We have already visited the docks and harbor in Newport and saw sea lions (which are also great!) and explored the harbors and docks in Alsea Bay and Governor Patterson Beach, as well as the beach in Seal Rock, for what it’s worth.
Thank you all! And shout out to all of you who make this place great.
In Lincoln city next to Mo's you can see them across the Siletz bay. If you want to get really close it's a 5 mile hike from the opposite side through a gated community. Be careful I think it's a 5k fine if you disturb them. They do play in the water close at the end of the bay. I've seen them playing 5 to 10 feet from the side you can drive to.
Also, OP, if you have the skills to go canoeing or kayaking (much further up the Bay than Mo’s the outgoing current near the mouth of the bay is quite strong) the seals on Siletz Bay often come fairly close to investigate me when I paddle there.
I was guiding a kayak tour in Maine one time, and had told all the clients to use their paddles to point instead of raising a ruckus. During one of my talks, they all started pointing at me. Thinking that a seal had surfaced in the other side, to watch me from behind, I turned to look. He was easily in petting distance; probably within biting range. My knee-jerk lean away from him almost capsized me. If I ran was less used to using my paddle to push on the water, I definitely would have had to do a wet exit in front of the whole tour. (Wouldn't want to attempt the roll with the seal in a range where I could hit him)
My dog got surrounded by them, in a very non-threatening/curious way, when he was wading there. About 20 little heads popped up in a semicircle. It was amazing.
There are always harbor seals on the off shore rocks at Strawberry Hill.
Sea Lion Caves? 😂
Newport docks
In the Coos Bay area there is Simpson Reef. Sea Lions, harbor seals and Elephant seals. Easliy viewed from a look out, but a safe distance. Take your binoculars.
My personal favorite spot.
I haven’t been so lucky but my mom saw orcas hunting in the water just off the island but she didn’t see them get anything.
Thanks for the responses so far. Just want to add that he knows not to try to disturb or feed them or anything. He’s very, very protective of them and knows more about the rules—written and otherwise—regarding them than my spouse and I do. He recites the facts constantly!
Yeah they will abandon their pups if they get scared. They do play in the water and will come up to you if they think you are fishing... lazy buggers.
I'd prefer it if you left them alone. The last thing they need is another human disturbing their peace/environment.
So they don't like humans?
No one likes humans.
https://www.zsl.org/conservation/regions/uk-europe/thames-marine-mammal-conservation
be sure to read their guidance and ZSL Code of conduct on how to behave around them to not disturb them.
Me and my dad are visiting family in cape breton until the 19th and I would really like to see some Seals! I know it's not the best time for them but they are my favorite animal so if you know of any good beaches or places for Seals let me know! Also what's that best time to see them? (Most of his family is around inverness so anywhere closer to there is best)
If you're on the eastern side of the island or have time, Point Aconi lighthouse is pretty active, its not uncommon to see 10+ in the waters
Ohhh that looks promising it's pretty close to us too! Is there a specific time they are more active over there that you know of?
Isn’t there an island within the island that’s literally called seal island?
Unless there's another one you are talking about I'm pretty sure that's on the other side of nova scotia
It’s right next to the biggest bridge on the island! The Seal Island bridge, is right next to Seal island. Not a lot of seals there though lol
You definitely aren't sure because it's right in the middle of Cape Breton
Usually seals on bird island. There is Bird Island Boat Tours in Big Bras D’Or & Donalda’s in Englishtown
Take a bird island “puffin” boat tour. There won’t be many puffins left around, but there will be so many seals
Just did this tour ~2 weeks ago (Donelda's), and there were a bunch of seals - in the water & on the rocks. There were tones of muffins when we went (and many other birds). The puffins there are quite small, and you can't get too close, but it was still cool to see. The whole family really enjoyed that tour.
It’s a great tour. So many seals. Puffins are pretty small birds; a lot of folks imagine them to be a lot larger than they actually are.
Can confirm bird island has seals right now - I was out there on my father’s boat yesterday and there were about 10 hanging around.
My boy is visiting his grandparents and just saw one over at Dominion beach yesterday. I was told where there’s sharks there are seals, so that might help to find some.
I like going to Jones beach, field 10. Park there and walk west down the beach. Bring binoculars, sometimes they get close to shore and sometimes they just hangout in the water swimming and eating.
This. If anything it’s still a beautiful spot and it’s nice to walk and get outdoors in the winter.
I haven’t done it in years but I also believe there’s a seal cruise out of Freeport or Point Lookout.
I also have known a lot of people to have luck out by Montauk in some of the state parks.
Still a month or so off of peak season on long island, but my favorite 2 spots are the Montauk Seal Haul out trail out North of Camp Hero and on the north side of Cupsogue Beach in the Hamptons.
Westhampton isn’t “the hamptons” though… they start when 27 changes to CR39.
I’ve seen plenty around Jones since mid-November. Montauk and off the north fork you’ll generally find the most, but still plenty to be seen on the rest of LI.
OK I feel like an idiot - I didn't know you could actually find seals on long island.
Please don’t, they used to be sparser. Now they are pretty easy to find. 😄 Many animals that had been extirpated have made remarkable comebacks.
Thanks! Yeah I googled and it looks like there's a boat that I can catch in Freeport that does both seal and whale watches.
I've seen them since I was a child 20-30 years. If I went fishing anytime between November and March I would see them pop their heads up in the bar. I agree there are more now.
And then I’ll go to your mom’s house to see a whale, right?
A sperm whale.
shes a humpback;)
If you want to guarantee that you see seals, then, of course, the best place to go is Newburgh.
But there's plenty to be seen around the harbour and up at Donmouth :)
Are these grey or harbour seals? Amazing pics OP. I have seen otters further along the done around the bridge that goes from grandholm to tillydrone
I think they're all harbour seals. The last one might be a grey seal. I'm more of a birder than a marine life enthusiast so I'm not entirely sure :)
They’re actually all grey seals! Their haul out spot at the Ythan has increased substantially with greys over the last decade or so, which is awesome. They were nearly hunted to extinction in the 20th century, but their numbers are finally starting to bounce back. Great pics!
Do you recommend any good spots in Aberdeen for birds? I used to have a garden feeder and got siskins, goldfinch, greenfinch, chaffinch, blue tits, great tits, blackbirds, starlings, pigeons and even a sparrowhawk once. Not any more in my top floor flat 😞
Cute as anything. I love seals.
You spotted them? I'd been wondering how they got spots.
Beautiful pics!
I think it’s the same one , in multiple locations lol.
After weeks of checking weather reports and tide charts, driving 2 hours to the beach, and spending another hour wandering around the coast, I finally got to see seals in the wild! I unfortunately don’t have any good pictures as their haul out spot was too far away to get a good picture with a phone camera. Binoculars were really the only way to see them well. Also saw a lot of cool seabirds and deer. Either way I am super excited about it so I thought I would share. Thanks for reading!
Can I ask where?! I wanna see a seal in real life so bad!!
Northern New Jersey! They’re there until about March. I can dm you the exact park I went to if you’d like. I was advised to go during low tide on a cold, sunny day.
Can I get the location too please? I didn't think there were any seals in the mid Atlantic!
Thank you! I’m in NH. I have been told I can go the maine coast to see them but I’ve never seen any 😞
ooooooh im about 20 mins from! if you don’t mind could you DM me the spot you went to? it’s been an absolute dream of mine to go seal spotting. i feel it would really help with my anxiety and just general depression. I’ve Been trying to scout out a nice spot in Connecticut but NJ is close to me as well :3 looove these shmeals 🦭
That's awesome! I love seeing seals in the wild
Did you see any banana poses? 🦭
Quite a few! Although they weren’t as extreme as some of the pictures you see online
Well that still means you were blessed by the banana seal gods!
Very nice! Congrats!
Thank you! 😄
I got to do this a few months ago too on a holiday to Cornwall! I’d done the same trip before (it was specifically a seal hunting trip) but only saw dolphins and puffins, we do it this time and get too see Seals, Dolphins, Puffins and even a Whale! Definitely a highlight of last year!
Does anyone recommend any seal encounters or know where to find them?
la jolla beach in cali during june has quite a few
A location would be useful here, even a broad one.
I live in America. I will travel anywhere though.
Is the Aquarium of the Pacific in Southern California, and I know they are redoing some stuff around there though so make sure that the construction isn't happening when you're going to visit.
NorCal coast usually have wild elephant seals chilling year around. Harbor seals are in SF. When I visited Seattle there were like three harbor seals in the aquarium and I encountered a couple of wild harbor seals.
Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago is free but if you’re there the Shedd has Belugas and Sea otters which are also a score for marine mammal heads. Weekday mornings after Labor Day are gonna be your best bet for any museum/zoo stuff in Chicago though lol
Aquarium of niagara in NY
I know Georgia Aquarium has one. So do a few others but I don't know exact locations, except for the Georgia one.
There's harbor seals on the western/northwestern European coast.
I think they mean an aquarium-type encounter where you can get up-close. In the wild you don’t want to get to close to a seal (and especially a sea lion lol)
Fair warning - they’re smelly irl
Here are some aquariums in the US that offer seal encounters!
best places to see seals
Here are some of the best places to see seals:
