TL;DR
Zep Grout Cleaner
Zep Grout Cleaner and Brightener has received positive feedback from multiple users. It's available at major retailers like Lowe's and Home Depot [1:1],
[1:2]. Users recommend using gloves when handling this product due to its strength. It effectively removes grime and brightens grout, making it a popular choice among those who have tried various cleaning methods without success
[1:5].
OxiClean Paste
OxiClean, when mixed into a paste with hot water, is another popular option for cleaning grout. Users suggest applying the paste directly onto the grout, letting it sit, and then scrubbing with a nylon bristle brush [1:6],
[2:2]. Keeping the paste moist is crucial to prevent it from hardening and becoming difficult to remove
[2:6]. This method has been praised for its effectiveness in restaurants and home settings alike
[2:3].
Bar Keepers Friend
Bar Keepers Friend is another recommended product for tackling stubborn grout stains. Users have found success by making a paste and allowing it to sit on the grout before scrubbing [2:1],
[2:4]. While it doesn't disinfect, it excels at removing built-up dirt and grime, making it a valuable tool for deep cleaning tasks
[1:3].
Alternative Methods
For those seeking natural or less abrasive options, vinegar combined with a stiff bristle brush can provide good results [5:3]. Additionally, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda are suggested as an effective combination for restoring grout to its original color
[3:2]. However, caution is advised when using strong chemicals, as they may damage grout and pose health risks
[5:2].
Additional Tools
Using specialized tools like the Rubbermaid Reveal Cordless Battery Power Scrubber can make the cleaning process easier and more efficient [1:1]. Drill brushes are also mentioned as a helpful tool for scrubbing grout
[2:9].
I can’t remember if I saw it here or clean tok but I saw someone use Zep grout cleaner and brightener and it made me want to leave the house immediately and buy a bottle. Haven’t used it myself yet!
I saw the baking soda concoction recommended on here so I tried it. I'm really bummed that after hours of scrubbing it looks like garbage still. I think I've heard of zep! I've never tried it. Did you leave your house immediately and buy some??
Baking soda is not a cleaner, only a mild abrasive
Go to any hardware store and get a deck scrub brush and a bottle of alkaline tile cleaner. Dilute the tile cleaner per label, mop on the floor, wait 10-15, scrub it then mop up with cold water.
Being a bathroom you're unlikely to get it to change a significant amount. Over time urine, and general floor cleaners will strip the sealant off the grout itself.
Be extra careful, tile cleaner will have the floor slick as ice.
I did not 😂 but to be fair I did immediately look to see if it was at Target because I was about to put in an order. It wasn’t, so I figured I would have to look around other places that weren’t on my agenda. We have a local hardware store that has a huge cleaning product section and I bet it is there!
I have bought Zep! at Lowe’s/Home Depo. I think you need gloves for it. It works great. These scrubbers are fun too.

I'm in Australia and use a product called Gumption for pretty much my entire bathroom. Glass, grout, taps, tiles - the lot. It will probably require a bit of elbow grease cause the grout looks quite dark, but dang it works well. Its a tub of citrus smelling paste stuff.
For grout I just put some on an old toothbrush, add some water and start scrubbing.
My ex MIL started me on it and its been a godsend when moving into houses that haven't been cleaned properly. It doesn't disinfect at all so you'll need a second product for any disinfecting, but it removes grime and build up like a champ.
It's available on Amazon I believe, and should be relatively cheap if its price is similar to what it is in Aus.
Edit: just had a look and apparently it is more expensive in the US.
Thank you! I'll look into that. I'm in the US, but if it's not a million dollars, I'm game to try it
I have always had the best luck OxiClean, hot water, and a nylon bristle brush.
I happen to have all of those things. Do you mix the oxi into the water and let the water sit, then scrub?
I mix the powder with hot water and dip the brush in the water. If I am feeling lazy I dump it right on the floor. After scrubbing I let it sit for a while to work then I wipe it up with an old towel. Sometimes I have to go over it with a damp cloth to remove any white residue.
I hate your floor pattern sm because there is none
Just drop ENZYME from the triple letter down onto the double word score and you’re winning. The board’s wide open. Poor defensive play by your opponent.
OK, I got you on this. Hydrogen Peroxide. Lots of it. Soak. Options:
I came here to plug the oxiclean paste - that shit has worked wonders on every bit of grout I've ever scrubbed, including restaurants.
I want to follow up on the OxiClean paste idea. Make sure you keep it moist! if it gets dry it is almost impossible to get it off because it creates almost a concrete.
Yes, thanks for catching that, I should have included it! Definitely cements in and then it's a lot more water to get it off.
Bar keepers friend
I just found this magical cleaning elixir that cleans everything and anything. Well so far. I don’t know how I had never heard of it. I just bought some a couple of weeks ago and I cleaned my kitchen grout (that is by my instapot) so the food and grime on the grout seemed to be stuck and stained on. I tried all the above methods (except peroxide) and it definitely helped but didn’t really deep clean. I used the bar keepers….made a paste and let it sit on there for a couple hours sprinkling water when it was drying out. Then brushed the grout and paste with a tooth brush and with a wire brush and it came out sparkling like new!!! How does no one really talk about this stuff????
I'm ahead of you by only a couple of years. LOVE the stuff. But i just used it on my oven racks and learned it can be corrosive. I use on stainless steel all the time and that's what i thought those shelves in my oven were. So I'm not exactly sure what you CAN'T use it on but i need to find out.
Mould cleaner/killer and a grout brush. Let the mould killer spray sit for a few minutes before scrubbing, and make sure ventilation fand are on.
Clorox plus tiled is the best for mold/mildew
Straight up bleach and a scrub brush with elbow grease. Good luck.
Try a drill brush
Bleach toilet gel
Peroxide and baking soda with brush. Pour on peroxide, sprinkle baking soda, ley sit a couple minutes, scrub. Clean water rinse. This method turned what I thought was black grout back to it's glorious gray. If you decide on grout paint, try Mapei Grout Refresh. Many colors to choose from and works like magic.
You can buy those grout tubes on Amazon, takes seconds to apply and lasts really long. You can get it in white, grey or black.
When my grout looked like this I painted it with grout paint. It’s been 5 years and might need a touch up next year or so but i was/am pleased with the results
Vinegar and a toothbrush.
A tsp Powdered tide, 1/2 a cup of bleach and the hottest tap water. Handsies and kneesies scrub with a scrub brush. Dry with a mop. Air dry, vacuum, then seal your grout.
Now this is an answer
What is the best product or natural thing you have used to get grout clean?
Also, wiping down walls and floorboards? It’s a lot of floorboards/walls do magic erasers might not be big enough!

Our top recommendations are usually Bar Keepers Friend (great for kitchen surfaces), melamine foam (Magic Erasers), Murphy's Oil Soap (wood cleaner), and Nature's Miracle (enzyme cleaner). Make sure you use cleaners appropriate to the surfaces you are working with and follow all safety labels.

I like to buy melamine sponges off Amazon for all baseboards, doors and walls. You can get 100 for around $10 and you're not paying for brand name. As for grout, I have a stiff wire brush I use.
New apartment, grout in shower is pretty gross. There is so much info online, so I’m asking the experts.
That's a tough thing to say without knowing the type of grout you have to work on. I'd clean it with vinegar and water and hope for the best and whatever result you get, take it and call it a day. Using chemicals may kill the grout and it may make the grout to disintegrate plus its bad for your lungs.
A stiff bristle brush, and a vinegar wash will get you great results.
Pics please
Sulfamic acid and elbow grease
Ive tried bleach based products, some clr, vim, Scrubbing the ba jesus outta it and it will not leave!!! I dont feel like breaking my wrists trying to clean this more lol
Look up enzyme cleaner. It works amazingly on a floor. It literally makes the grout look brand new in 8 hours wet. I’m not sure how to make it work on a wall…keep applying it w h2o?
I recently used Bar Keeper's Friend with a drill attachment scrub brush on my shower grout and I feel like that worked well (I did let the bkf sit for a while before scrubbing).
I have tried a bunch of cleaners and cannot seem to get this grout clean. I've tried spraying bleach all over it, lots of natural cleaners, normal bathroom cleaners. I've scrubbed it for hours with a grout brush and nothing. I have a cleaning girl that comes every two weeks and she can't get it any cleaner than this either. Please it's making me insane. The second picture is an area where it has less staining and is closer to the original color.
I posted something about the exact same problem yesterday! Got lots of good advice on recoloring and sealing the grout: https://www.reddit.com/r/CleaningTips/s/Pa3IoXN7bh
Unfortunately bleach can damage grout and may actually make the discoloration worse.
I'd make a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide and really cake it on there so it can sit and stay moist for a long while, giving it time to work.
If that still doesn't work, you may want to dye the grout. There are various paints/dyes/pastes that can be applied to change grout color without taking it all out. At least by then the grout will be super clean so it'll be better prepped for any color lol!
Unfortunately white grout is just an absolute menace to keep white.
Came here to say this same thing. Baking soda hydrogen peroxide and a toothbrush is what I use and it works for me!
Steam. I just bought a pressure steamer and rejoiced at the outcome.
I wonder if you can paint gold or regrout a darker grout color
Never use bleach on grout! It yellows it... having said that, I'm sorry but I don't have a clue! Maybe reach out to a floor cleaner place? (I've had a company come in and clean my slate kitchen floors and they did a great job with the tiles and the grout).
Mapei heavy duty grout cleaner.
These are in a bathroom shower that is about 8 years old and haven’t been cleaned properly. The water here is very hard (contains a lot of calcium). So how best can I clean these grouts?
That doesn’t look too bad. I’d start with a grout brush and grout cleaner first and see how that works. The caulk in the 3rd pic would probably have to be removed, the area under it cleaned thoroughly and new caulking put in.
Thank you!
Hallo! The schimmelvlekken reiniger schuimspray by HG works very well to clean this. I spray it on and leave it for a bit and use an Ikea dish brush to scrub it into the "voeg". Make sure to have windows open because it stinks!
The sealant at the bottom where the wall meets the floor needs to be redone as the schimmel is growing inside it. This is easy to do yourself.
Veel succes!
Thanks for the elaborate reply! I’ll see if I can get my hands on some Schimmelvlekken reiniger schuimspray first.
Cleaning vinagre and a toothbrush for the non-mold areas.
Doesn’t vinegar dissolve some of the grout? I’ve seen some people warn about it?
True with very intensive usage, but it will clean it. After maintain with a lighter product
Steam cleaner and wear a mask.
That’s an operation!
It will make all the difference!
Thanks!!
Bathroom cleaning chemicals get to me. Any suggestions on what to use to clean grout? About 5 minutes in the room with soft scrub had me popping full body rash.
Blast it down with hydrogen peroxide first and then leave it for a while. It should become water and oxygen in 4ish hours, and while the surface mould will be good and dead the staining will remain. At least it'd be safer to work with then with a magic sponge or something

Baking soda and white vinegar
Best products for cleaning grout
Key Considerations for Cleaning Grout:
Type of Grout: Identify whether your grout is sanded or unsanded, as this can affect the cleaning method and products you should use.
Stains and Build-Up: Determine the type of stains (mold, mildew, dirt) you are dealing with to choose the most effective cleaning solution.
pH Level: Opt for pH-neutral cleaners to avoid damaging the grout. Acidic or overly alkaline cleaners can erode grout over time.
Application Method: Consider whether you prefer sprays, pastes, or foams, as well as whether you want a product that requires scrubbing or one that works with minimal effort.
Recommended Products:
OxiClean MaxForce Grout Cleaner: This is a powerful spray that effectively tackles tough stains and is safe for most grout types.
Zep Grout Cleaner and Whitener: A strong cleaner that can remove deep-set stains and restore the original color of grout.
Baking Soda and Vinegar: A natural and cost-effective solution. Mix baking soda with water to form a paste, apply it to the grout, and then spray with vinegar. Let it fizz, scrub, and rinse.
Grout Pen: For a quick fix, a grout pen can help cover stains and restore the appearance of discolored grout lines.
Steam Cleaner: If you're looking for a chemical-free option, a steam cleaner can effectively sanitize and clean grout without harsh chemicals.
Recommendation: For regular maintenance, using a pH-neutral cleaner like OxiClean MaxForce is effective and safe. For deep cleaning, consider the combination of baking soda and vinegar for a natural approach. Always test any product on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure compatibility with your grout.
