Cleaning a bathtub can be challenging, especially when dealing with stubborn stains or soap scum. Here are some effective methods and products recommended by users across various discussions.
Products for Cleaning
Several products have been recommended for cleaning bathtubs effectively. Comet and Ajax are popular choices, though they are abrasive and may damage the finish over time [5:1]. Soft Scrub with bleach is suggested for tougher stains without damaging the surface
[5:9]. Barkeepers Friend is highly praised for its effectiveness, but it should be tested in a small area first
[5:2]
[5:4].
DIY Cleaning Solutions
Creating your own cleaning solutions can also be effective. A paste made from Comet, Dawn dish soap, and water can be used with a scrub brush [2:1]. Vinegar combined with Dawn in a spray bottle is another option
[2:5]. For those preferring less chemical exposure, using degreasing dish soap like Dawn with baking soda works well on soap scum
[3:3].
Tools and Techniques
Using the right tools can make cleaning easier. Magic erasers are frequently mentioned as effective for removing stains without harsh chemicals [3:7]
[3:8]. Cordless drills with cleaning brush attachments can make scrubbing more efficient
[2:3]. Additionally, plastic paint scrapers can help remove soap scum before scrubbing
[2:1].
Addressing Specific Stains
For hard water stains, CLR Brilliant Bath has been noted for its effectiveness [4:1]. Lysol toilet bowl cleaner combined with Ajax can tackle difficult stains when left to sit for 30 minutes to an hour
[4:2]. It's important to consider the material of the tub, as some cleaners might damage certain finishes
[3:4].
Additional Maintenance
Beyond cleaning, redoing caulk and touching up grout where needed can improve the appearance and cleanliness of the bathtub [5:6]. Regular maintenance can prevent the buildup of mold and water stains, ensuring a cleaner tub over time.
By combining these products, DIY solutions, and techniques, you can effectively clean and maintain your bathtub, keeping it fresh and stain-free.
I moved to a new rental and seems the bath is dirty. How do I clean it myself? Doesn't seem to go away by wiping using all purpose cleaner.
Try barkeepers friend and a heavy scrub brush for the tub portion
Irish Spring
Flame thrower
By moving to a new place
CLR, comet, steel pad, razor blade, new caulk most of the time the mold or water stains will not come out of the caulk. For the grout get yourself a grout removal tool they are cheap scrape just the surface and reseal. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Marshalltown-2-in-Steel-Blade-Red-Plastic-Grout-Saw/5001934179?store=211&cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-flr-_-ggl-_-PMAX_FLR_000_Priority_Item-_-5001934179-_-local-_-0-_-0&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21853579413&gbraid=0AAAAAD2B2W8_x3hvdF133X8FBzSNaqMyI&gclid=CjwKCAjw7fzDBhA7EiwAOqJkh8nDetcFU2iPkKuLGpXt2J_Muw6R586YsxvN4GcMkBgoMPdiPLusQhoCERgQAvD_BwE
Title says it all really Feel like even after I've cleaned my bath there's still dust or hair, maybe I'm being fussy but I like things to be perfect and if I'm putting effort in to do the cleaning I want to reap the reward At the moment I use some sort of bathroom cleaning spray, Scrub with a sponge, rinse away with water then dry the tub with a microfiber cloth, any hints pr hacks would be greatly appreciated because cleaning the bathroom is my absolute least favourite
I use a retired kitchen sponge and dish soap.
Comet powder and a cordless drill with cleaning brush head attachment.
When it’s still wet chuck a handful 0f bicarbonate, rinse.
Vinegar and Dawn in spray bottle
Make a paste with comet dawn and lil water, scrub with a big daddy (rectangle large scrub daddy) you DO NOT need a lot, comet can be a B to rinse. If you have a lot of scum, I suggest getting a plastic paint scraper thing and scrape the sides of the tub before scrubbing
I've tried to clean it with bleach or Clorox but it's so abrasive and doesn't get all the stains.. what's the best way you use to clean it? I feel really embarrassed and just bad about how gross it is :(
What is the tub made out of and what kind of stain? Soap scum?
I use a degreasing dish soap (like Dawn) and baking soda. Get the tub wet, let those two sit, then scrub with a standard dish sponge.
It works really well to get rid of the soap scum and cleans it really well with little effort. Plus side, no nasty chemicals/smells.
This is the best answer here. It's incredibly safe and no harsh chemicals. Even bleach is bad for your lungs.
Bleach isn’t soap so it doesn’t work well a thing cleaning a lot of stuff with residue. It is a good stain remover.
Magic erasers work incredibly well on plastic tubs. I’ve also used a general all purpose cleaner with one of those green plastic dish scrubbers. Takes a while to scrub, but does clean it.
I stay away from scrub free or scrubbing bubbles because the smell really bothers me.
Agreed! The scrubbing bubbles is awful. I don't like it. Does comet work good? It a green tube with powder?
It works and is particularly good on my current old metal tub with an enamel finish.
I used it on an acrylic tub in my old apartment and it damaged the finish slightly - made it less smooth.
Comet is good & much cheaper than a magic eraser! SoftScrub is also good.
Spray it down. Dust comet over it and use a green scrubbie (dollar store are way cheaper and same quality) and you will have it sparkling clean in no time
Dude magic erasers work well on almost everything... It's also the only thing I trust to clean wall stains without removing the paint. They really are magic lol
The most satisfying thing is removing finger prints from walls, doors, and melamine. Magic Eraser is a delight for old finger prints, and strangely the only thing that works on melamine!
Magic erasers work miracles
AJAX. PUT IT IN THE TUB. WET IT. SCRUB IT DOWN. RINSE UNTIL CLEAN.
Hello, cleaning gods! I’ve seen what you’ve done for others 🤣
I moved into a house last fall and the tub has some difficult stains. I’ve tried a few different cleaning approaches and while it does get significantly better, it’s not getting the dingy dark spots out. I know you beautiful geniuses have all the answers. I have attached some photos of the stains.
I scrub this tub weekly. I’ve tried a number of different cleaners and different brushes etc. the walls are all in excellent condition/stain free, the issue really is just the bottom 2 inches of tub. I want to get this whole tub looking brand new (as much as possible) and then replace the drain. Any and all advice welcome. Thank you in advance!
Get Lysol toilet bowl cleaner spread everywhere then pour Ajax on top leave it for like 30 minutes to an hour after sprinkle some water and scrub rinse and it should be clean
La awesome works great!
Quick, somebody hit the Irish Spring 5-in-1 gong
CLR Brilliant Bath works awesome.
My tub gets stains from hard water and has a similar texture and the CLR works beautifully on it.
We swear by Barkeepers Friend. I'd probably try the dry first, but in a small area. If no problems, then use it. If so, then try the liquid.
Barkeepers is by far the best. Just know it does get into the top layers, but this is pretty bad. You should get some vinegar on the mold also.
CLR would take care of this with less scrubbing than scouring powder.
If you want a liquid that does what CLR does I have found that Zep works better than CLR, particularly on soap scums.
Soft Scrub with bleach or Bon Ami would be my recommendation. No Comet or Ajax, they are too abrasive and ruin the finish. This will make it harder to clean later and will actually make it dirty more quickly.
Yes!!! SOFT SCRUB WITH BLEACH. only thing that cleans my scratched old porcelain or whatever sink.
Irish Spring 5 in 1
This is the answer! Check r/cleaningtips I tried it and it worked on my tub
And if you don't like the smell of Irish Spring, Suave Citrus Rush 3-in-1 works, but you have to leave it longer than Irish Spring.
u/charmibarmie listen to this, it's not a joke. Check out the r/cleaningtips subreddit search for posts about it. It works crazy well.
In addition to cleaning, you also need to redo the caulk and at least touch up the grout where needed.
This person doesn’t know how to clean a tub, you think they have the ability to caulk the tub?
I was wondering how often you clean your tub? Once a week, once a year,? what is your favorite cleaning product Fabuloso, soft, scrub, bar keepers friend?
Every week and I always use washing up liquid. Cleans bathroom grime so we'll. If there is limescale I will use limescale spray too but we live in a soft water area so it's not very often.
I wash it the same way and then spray bleach to let it sit for a bit before I rinse it down the drain. My kid takes a lot of baths.
Oh yes. I use bleach too around the edges and taps. Hate that black mould! Once it grows it's impossible to get rid off. Prevention is better than cure!
Every week. I use a cleaning paste made of 1 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup white vinegar, and 1 tablespoon dishwashing liquid.
What do you use to do the cleaning? Sponge? Washcloth? Brush?
I use a Scrubb Daddy.
I'm lazy. I clean mine once a month unless it looks yucky then I clean it sooner. But I use scrubbing bubbles and a magic eraser.
That is the answer, and because my spouse and son are gross, i clean it every other week. During the summer weekly
Once a year and I use Irish Spring 5-in-1.
I do it Tuesdays. So easy to do when you stay on top of it. I call it Toilet Tuesdays lol.
My version of Sunday church is the holy trinity of clean towels, clean sheets, clean tubs
I use magic eraser too and never had a problem. She toilet bowl cleaner in the bathtub, bc it’s pourus and it will stain. My roommate found out the hard way. Don’t know why she did that.
I don’t know this tub has been getting more and more difficult to clean. I was able to clean all the grime off it when we first moved in and I regularly clean it with comet and a magic eraser however getting the stains off had been getting more and more difficult. Any recommendations?
Please don't recommend several gallons of bleach that's a health hazard. If you put 20 gallons of water in the tub you'd only need a 1/2 cup. Follow the directions for dilution. Bleach is very caustic and dangerous and not stable.
Idk what that tub is made of or coated with, but want to note that bleach yellows plastic instead of whitening it. (30% peroxide in combination with UV brightens plastic.)
100% true.
I’m also learning how few people don’t realize you CAN NOT mix bleach and ammonia based products. It can and will kill you painfully. Bleach should always be diluted with cold water and never mixed with anything except cold water.
My next-door neighbor asked me if I knew that. Almost killed herself cleaning her bathroom. Always knew pretty much, tho. Grandmother on one side was a custodian. We all knew.
Also, it's dicey to mix bleach with Dawn.
100%!!!!
Try the Irish Spring 5 in 1 hack. You may have stripped the protective coating with Comet and magic erasers, making it harder to keep clean. Apply a coat of Irish Spring 5 in 1 over the area, cover with cling/plastic wrap and let sit for 12-24 hours before rinsing. I scrubbed it when rinsing but others had success just rinsing it away. Other combo body/shampoo washes may work too but Irish Spring 5 in 1 is the most tested.
Irish Spring 5-in-one?
Everyone’s just gonna say Irish spring 5 in 1 - good luck.
If Comet and a magic eraser aren’t cutting it anymore, I’d try doing a soak with something like Bar Keepers Friend Soft Cleanser or Zep Shower Tub & Tile Cleaner. Apply it generously, let it sit for 10–15 minutes (or longer if it’s really stubborn), and then go at it with a stiff nylon brush. The key is to let the cleaner break down the buildup before scrubbing. Don’t rush that part.
You might also want to try a rinse with very hot water afterward to help loosen anything caught in the surface texture. Good Luck!
Has been like this for months: stained mostly with bath bombs and stage makeup if I recall correctly? Glitter is also stuck on the bottom. Have already tried Scrubbing Bubbles and some OxyClean spray. The last couple times I tried going at it, it looked like more grime got revealed under the bit that I scrubbed, and seemed like the tub lining started coming off too.
I had a really gross bathtub to clean when my brother moved out. I used barkeepers friend and a soft scratch resistant sponge. But before that since there was so much soap and conditioner build up at the bottom I soaked it for like an hour in the hottest water with some dawn then took an old broom and scrubbed the bottom then let it drain.
Hi Op! Best thing I’ve found is 1/4 baking soda, 1/4 Castile soap (or Dawn) and 1/2 water. Get your tub wet, scrub this around, let it sit for 5 minutes, scrub off with water. Best part is it’s 100% non toxic and safe to breath in. I’ve found it works way better than chemical cleaners.
SOFT SCRUB (the one with bleach) and a stiff bristle cleaning brush. Wet the tub, squirt the product all around, then use a wet brush to get the product a bit sudsy. DON'T SCRUB YET, just spread it all around.
After about 20 minutes, while keeping your brush wet, go to town. Rinse when done. May need a wet rag to get the rest off so it doesn't leave a film.
Yup, and get into the tub to scrub. Leaning over the edge is for the birds. Scrub one end, get out and rinse the tub out, and get in facing the other way to do the other end. If comet doesn't work, try a pumice scouring stick. I discovered those last year - wanna test first to make sure it doesn't destroy the finish.
If this is a fiberglass tub, then the pumice stone will destroy it. Pumice works wonders on porcelain but that's the only thing I would ever use it on.
Do you have a drill? Get a scrub brush for it. If you don't have a drill then buy an automatic scrubber like this one:
Electric Spin Scrubber, Cordless Electric Scrubber for Bathroom Adjustable Extension Arm, 4 Brush Heads, 2 Powerful Spin Speed, Run 90 Mins, Electric Bathroom Cleaner Brush for Tub Tile Floor(5000mAH) https://a.co/d/3GObDUQ
Then use either Borax, Comet or Soft Scrub and some very hot water.
First run the water as hot as it can go, fill the tub since that seems to be the worst part) halfway and add a scoop off Oxyclean powder and a scoop of Borax. Let it soak over night, the n try using a scrub brush. I feel like any cleaning product you use you need to let soak awhile.
More importantly, don't beat yourself up depression is hard and the fact that you're taking off your make up is pretty impressive. I don't manage that a lot of the time. Living in a poorly maintained rental makes everything even worse, and believe it or not makes cleaning harder. I'm finding that out myself. I don't have many answers, but if I can help feel free to message me.
Start with soap to get any greasy grime then Bar Keepers Friend.
I just discovered bar keepers friend and it’s amazing! Legit cut the cleaning time in half and took down stuff I didn’t think it could (like rust)!
Soft scrub and one of those drill brushes or a sponge with a bit of elbow grease
Once you get the tub clean, maintain with dish soap. I keep a dish wand full of soap in my shower and every week-2 weeks I give it a quick scrub. It's a lifesaver and actually kinda fun cause you can just do it while you're showering!
Just rented my own place for the first time and I want to get this bathtub as clean as possible. Any advice?
Id try HG mould spray on that grout!
Seconded. Put lots of, leave for longer than the bottle says, rinse real well
I had similar mould on the sealant - what I have found works really well is making sure it is completely dry, then applying bleach all along (ideally with a toothbrush so you have make sure it’s completely covered, be generous) then get a lot of loo roll and make into a long sausage and seal it all in - leave overnight and you’ll be amazed
Hi there! I rent and am having an issue with my bathtub, the only thing that helps it is toilet bowl cleaner but leaves it streaky no matter how much I scrub. Any ideas how to get it cleaner? Thanks in advance!! Also I rent and have no idea about the bath tub
Get yourself some Irish Spring 5 in 1 and cling film to stop it drying out. Leave overnight (some leave longer) then remove wrap and clean as usual
Check out some before and after posts on this sub
Thank you!!
Oh no you dint.. Toilet acid and they own you for life
What?
What they mean the toilet cleaner can potentially dissolve plastic, I’m going to assume that bath is a plastic one or fibreglass?
