Best Quiet CPU Fan Recommendations

TL;DR

  • Noctua fans and coolers are highly recommended for their quiet performance and durability.
  • Consider Scythe Fuma 2/3, Thermalright Silver Arrow, and be quiet! Silent Wings Pro for low noise options.

Noctua Fans and Coolers

Noctua is frequently mentioned as a top choice for quiet CPU cooling solutions. Their fans and coolers are praised for their exceptional build quality and low noise levels [2:1][5:1]. The Noctua NH-D15 and NF-A14x25 G2 models are particularly highlighted for their performance and longevity [5:4]. Users appreciate the company's commitment to functionality over aesthetics, which ensures reliable operation [5:1].

Scythe Fuma Series

The Scythe Fuma 2 and its successor, the Fuma 3, are noted for their quiet operation even at full RPM [1:4][2:7]. These coolers use low RPM fans that maintain near-silent acoustics while providing effective cooling, making them a great option for those prioritizing silence.

Thermalright Silver Arrow

The Thermalright Silver Arrow IB-E Extreme is another cooler that has been praised for its quiet performance, reportedly surpassing the Noctua NH-D15 in some tests [3:1]. Although it may not be as well-known, it offers excellent noise control and cooling efficiency.

be quiet! Silent Wings

For case fans, the be quiet! Silent Wings series is recommended for those seeking quiet operation [4:1]. These fans are designed to minimize noise while delivering effective airflow, making them suitable for silent PC builds.

Considerations Beyond Specific Models

When selecting a quiet CPU fan or cooler, it's important to consider the balance between cooling efficiency and noise levels. Adjusting fan curves and opting for larger fans that operate at lower RPMs can also contribute to quieter operation [2:5]. Additionally, regular maintenance such as cleaning and occasional oiling of bearings can help prolong the lifespan and reduce noise from existing fans [5:7].

ORIGINAL POST

Obviously not silence, but as close as possible. I have been using a Ryzen CPU for a few years now with the stock heatsink and I want to upgrade it to something that will help reduce the noice and hopefully the temperatures too. I saw people recommend the dark rock (pro) 4 a while back, but I know that the computing industry moves fast, so I thought I'd check in again incase there's a new challenger.

A large dual-tower cooler for lots of surface area paired with a single quiet fan will give great temperatures and acoustics. For a while I had a 10900K cooled by a CNPS20X with a single Silent Wings 3 140 fan in the center slot, it was inaudible at 12 inches away with the side panel off.

The Most Quiet Computer Fan Piece for a PC?

Posted by winstonpress · in r/buildapc · 2 years ago

Hello, a while ago I made a post talking about building a PC just so I could record some videos and play minecraft. I got a ton of great comments so I'm thankful for that, but I was wondering what the best quiet computer fan piece would be a PC. The PC I have right now has a very loud fan, so I have to do a lot of editing to remove background noise, which I really don't like. I was wondering if there's a computer fan on the market known for being quiet I could use to avoid the tediousness of editing my videos.

Are you talking about just a fan or a cooler assembly (heatsink + fan)? Noctua makes really good coolers and fans, they perform well at low noise levels and have zero whine noise.

Noctua is the way to go. The quality of their coolers and fans are second to none, and the customer service excellent. You can tell they're made by someone passionate. It still amazes me that they sent me an AM4 kit for free 10 years after I bought the NH-D14.

You shouldn’t find the quietest fan — smart pc building is finding the optimal noise to cooling ratio to meet your use case.

Like a 900 rpm noctua case fan will be pretty much inaudibly quiet, but it won’t push a lot of air and might not adequately cool components.

Budget Arctic P12, just don't run them fixed at 1k rpm as they resonate a bit (but during transitions to that regime, you won't notice it). Or the newer p12 Max.

Performance more expensive Nidec Gentle typhoon (properly set up not to make them go full blast or else they aren't silent at all), but they push a fuckton of air. Alternatives are the Thermalright Toughfan, Phanteks t30.

Premium.. Noctua nf a12x25 or the new Silent wings pro 4. Trouble Noctua doesn't make a 140mm NF a14x25, but be quiet does it with the SWP4

Adjusts your fan curves first. Like if it takes 90% fan to give you 72c. And 30% gives you 70c. You can dial it down. Also, larger fans can move more air with lower RPM. Move less, less noise.

What's the best, quietest CPU air cooler out now?

Posted by sputter99 · in r/buildapc · 5 years ago

Hi. I'm just wondering what the quietest, best performing CPU air cooler is right now. I've heard a lot about the Noctua NH-D15, but I've also heard that a lesser known cooler, the Thermalright Silver Arrow IB-E Extreme performs slightly better and quieter than the Noctua. Does anybody know if this is true? And can someone please lead me to the quietest CPU air cooler? Thanks so much in advance.

Best seems to be the Zalman CNPS20X as tested by Kitguru, twice. I'd be really interested if GamersNexus would validate their findings now that they have their air cooling methodology finalized.

Quietest is whichever has the fans spinning the slowest. Kitguru only did an RPM normalized test but said in a comment that the noise difference between the CNPS20X and D15 was only 0.2dB apart and wasn't at all noticeable on their test bench.

As for the Silver Arrow IB-E, it seems to have been superseded by the Le Grand Macho RT (same TDP 320W) which some also claim is better than the D15. But until they're tested with a well polished methodology, like GN's, we can't say for certain.

That said, I wouldn't worry about absolute best as there really is only a small difference between all the massive dual-tower coolers.

Best PC fans without horrible bearings?

Posted by Ambitious-Leader600 · in r/buildapc · 6 months ago

Hey, does anyone have any reccomendations for longevity PC fans, I really don't care if it's like $500 at this point. I've owned computers for over 12 years, and each system after about 1-2 years will start to give very slight fan sounds, then eventually a bearing sound. I have Hyperacusis and every sound like that makes me want to flip. I am currently using a Cooler Master MasterLiquid 240L Core ARGB CPU Liquid Cooler.

I clean my PC properly, room is clean and dust free. I can just never be bothered building a PC and every pre built even if it's like $5000 has some shitty coolmaster in it that's louder than a wind turbine for me. So I will install this part myself then, but I really need a good fan reccomendation or I'll just drill a hole though my wall and run my PC out of the room.

Decided to get a Noctua NH-D15 G2 LBC CPU Cooler. Looked like an old standing fan my grandpa used to have with the rustic brown and cream colour. Best thing about that fan, is it’s from 1985 and it still works better than the one I bought from Bunnings recently 😅. Should arrive in 3 days.

Seems Noctua make products that work, not look cute. And that’s what I need, thank you everyone for the suggestions!

So if you want the best performance and the quietest coolers, go with a Noctua cooler.

Their website: https://noctua.at/en/products/cpu-cooler-retail

Their standard color scheme is brown, but some models do come in an optional black color. Since you don't care about looks, you have the whole lineup to choose from.

For your 9700K and case that has a max cooler height of 160 mm, go with the NH-U12A or the NH-U12S.

The NH-U12A uses two of Noctua's famed NF-A12 fans for some top tier performance and quietness for it's size. It's Noctua's best cooler under 160 mm. Noctua rates the cooler as cooling the 9700K so that it gives the best turbo and overclock headroom. See link here: https://ncc.noctua.at/coolers/NH-U12A-8/cpus/?q=9700k. Going for $100 on Amazon.

If you want to spend less, there's the NF-U12S. This is a popular single fan model from Noctua, you can think of it as the NH-U12A's little brother. This cooler has a black version. Noctua rates the cooler as cooling the 9700K so that it gives a medium amount of turbo and overclock headroom. See link here: https://ncc.noctua.at/coolers/NH-U12S-9/cpus/?q=9700k. Standard brown for $60 on Amazon, and black version for $70.

Depends on your budget and case. For $75, the be quiet! Dark Rock 4 is a really high-quality silent air cooler that will be a decent step up from your current tower cooler.

If you can stretch your budget a bit further and can mount a 280mm radiator in your case, then the Arctic Liquid Freezer II 280 will also be a great option.

Can confirm. I have a dark Rock 4 on my Motif Monument build, so a completely open and exposed case. It's just about dead silent under max load on a 9900k. Because of this I've bought 3 other Dark Rock coolers for quiet builds, cannot recommend it highly enough

Some of the quietest you can get are liquid coolers. I highly do not recommend it if you have never set one up. If you mess up the piping, water could leak all over the inside of your pc and fry it all. Other than that, the other comments are what you should look at. Just thought I should say this.

If you're using Molex connectors, nothing is going to be quiet, since fans on Molex run at 100%. You can buy a cheap fan controller that will allow you to turn down the RPM, which will make even the cheapest fan quiet. You can also swap for larger fans at lower RPM. The largest fans will move the most air with the least noise, but the drawback is the huge hole you have to cut into a case to accommodate them.

2 upvotes on reddit
GodzSpeeed1 · OP · 6 years ago

How would I hook up a fan controller? I am using molex currently.

1 upvotes on reddit
E
eatingpotatochips · 6 years ago

You buy one, then you connect them using the 2 pin fan connectors. Unless you buy a fancy one with a tach, they'll all be 2 pins. Just buy a cheap one off Ebay. There's one with 4 dials that I use. The LEDs are unnecessarily bright, but you can color them in with a permanent marker to dim them.

The fan controller is a collection of potentiometers that varies the voltage provided to a fan. This adjusts the rotation speed. If you set them low enough, they should shut the fan down entirely.

2 upvotes on reddit
Kavai27 · 6 years ago

You can mod a molex connector to 7v or 5v to slow down the fans. Did that recently with the Zalman Z9 Neo casefans.

I did a bunch of research about 3 years ago (so keep that in mind as this data may have changed as fan designs have changed) and found this big database that contained airflow and noise data for a ton of fans. To which I added pricing data to it.

With this, I came up with a metric wherein I had best airflow to noise data, and then compounded that with airflow to noise data divided by price. And with that information, I was able to determine that (by my metric) a company that I had never heard of - Nanoxia, made the best fans for the dollar (specifically their Deep Silence PWM series).

Alpenföhn Brocken or Thermalright Macho.

The BeQuiets are really quiet but how the fan is attached to the cooler is absolutely low-tech. The clamp is really weak and the fan hangs slightly lower than the cooler (I have two BeQuiet Pure Rocks and this is what I don't like about them)

Really good and advanced - but also getting near the 40 pounds mark: Thermalright Macho. Also comes with a really good screwdriver.

AI Answer

best quiet CPU fan

Key Considerations for Choosing a Quiet CPU Fan:

  1. Noise Level (dBA): Look for fans that operate at a low decibel level (typically below 30 dBA) for quiet performance. Fans rated around 20-25 dBA are considered very quiet.

  2. Airflow (CFM): Ensure the fan provides adequate airflow (measured in cubic feet per minute, CFM) to keep your CPU cool without generating excessive noise. A balance between airflow and noise is crucial.

  3. Size Compatibility: Check the size of your CPU cooler and ensure the fan fits your case. Common sizes are 120mm and 140mm, but make sure to verify compatibility with your setup.

  4. Bearing Type: Fans with fluid dynamic bearings (FDB) or magnetic levitation bearings tend to be quieter and have a longer lifespan compared to sleeve or ball bearings.

  5. Speed Control: Look for fans that support PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) for dynamic speed control, allowing the fan to adjust its speed based on CPU temperature, which can help reduce noise during low loads.

Recommendations:

  • Noctua NF-A12x25: Known for its exceptional performance and low noise levels (up to 22.6 dBA), this fan is highly regarded in the PC building community. It offers great airflow (up to 2100 RPM) and is built with high-quality materials.

  • be quiet! Silent Wings 3: This fan operates at a maximum of 26.8 dBA and provides excellent airflow. It features a unique design that minimizes vibration and noise, making it a great choice for quiet builds.

  • Corsair ML120 Pro: With magnetic levitation technology, this fan is efficient and quiet, operating at around 37 dBA at full speed but can be quieter at lower RPMs. It also offers customizable RGB lighting if aesthetics are important to you.

Choosing any of these options will help ensure a quiet computing experience while maintaining effective cooling for your CPU.
