I'm really trying to get into sci-fi and I'd love to do that through games. Could you kindly share some of your favorites?
Thanks a lot!
Mass Effect series. Prey 2016. The original Deus Ex if you can vibe with the old graphics.
Prey was amazing and the dlc it's a shame it didn't do well enough for another one.
Incredible games, but not really science fiction.
Half-Life (1 and 2),
Deus Ex,
Cyberpunk2077,
Fallout series
Portal,
XCom
Just for starters.
this is pretty much Mass Effect just in another universe. Made by original Bioware, not ruined yet by EA
Civilization: Alpha Centauri. A lot of civilization-like games going through present and beyond step into the sci-fi territory, but that game in particular starts with the founding of colonies in another solar system, have to deal with local life and things like that.
You mean the good one from the 90s right?
I believe that's more often called Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.
Absolutely legendary game.
Beyond Earth is fun too
Xcom and Xcom 2 if you like turn based tactical combat.
Darktide if you like first person co-op like L4D.
Love squad-based tactical games. Give Jagged Alliance 3 a shot. Very very good. The original Valkyria chronicles is my fav but that’s like a PS3 game.
I still go back to the masterpiece that is X-Com: Apocalypse.
Old school Xcom, nice! I remember the original Enemy Unknown, played the hell out of that back in the 90s. Terror from the Deep was so bloody hard.
What are suggestions of scifi video games? For example, games like Fallout, Cyberpunk, and Mass Effect.
Dead space. Outer wilds. Bioshock series.
Atomic Heart
Bioshock
Metro
Borderlands (kind of)
The Outer Worlds
Quantum Break
Control
Loved control!
Control is kino
Prey (2017) is phenomenal.
Deus Ex
Invisible War is an all-time favorite
SOMA
Outer Wilds
Wolfenstein The New Order and The New Colossus
Horizon Zero Dawn & Forbidden West
Mass Effect
Half-Life 2 & followup episodes
Portal 1 & 2
Death Stranding
Titanfall 2
XCOM Enemy Unknown & XCOM 2
Hardspace Shipbreaker
The Expanse: A Telltale Series
When I say "classic", I mean games drawing inspirations from classic sci-fi novels and TV shows --- especially in how meticulously some of them handle their world-building, exposition and setting (Star Trek comes to my boomer mind here). I mentioned Mass Effect because I finished the Legendary Edition this past winter and was reminded how original and refreshing the core story is while still being based on original IP and mashing various influences into a really fascinating setting (eg. especially the part about humanity's first contact with aliens being very recent, like ~25 years before the first game starts IIRC)
I'm a bit out of the loop when it comes to sci-fi but I now have newfound appreciation for it - again, b/c of replaying Mass Effect. Also, genre isn't that important as long the game itself is good, I'm not choosy in that respect. In fact, the latest "sci-fi" game I played was a campy old school styled RTS called Retro Commander (basically Red Alert but more futuristic and with a half-funny story)... so anything goes. Indie games, AA(A) games - RPGs, strategies, immersive sims. Hit me with anything you think stands out as a modern sci-fi classic in the world of gaming.
I have my eyes on Outer Wilds right now - people have already told me this one's a MUST - but aside from that, which other games y'all reckon I should get that will be good to me now in my sci-fi phase?
Alien Isolation
Dead Space Remastered
Prey
Returnal
Signalis
Seconding Prey. One of the best games I've ever played and I'm not even that much of a sci-fi person.
Alien Isolation..Dead Space...are any of these not horrifying? I'm a scaredy cat and even some of the husks in mass effect freaked me out the first time I played.
I'd love to play bioshock for example, but I can't get past the slicer scene at the beginning of the game...
Dead Space is not for you. It's an amazing game, and it accomplishes its horror in a really interesting way because you are heavily armored and very dangerous, but the enemies are just grotesque. If the husks were a problem for you, you would absolutely not like the necromorphs.
That said, maybe check out a playthrough of it. If it looks fun... I mean, I hate horror games. A lot. But I loved Dead Space.
I'm playing returnal now and absolutely hate horror. The only spooky stuff is in certain sequences. They are optional, but develop story and unlock artefacts to use in runs. I've been managing them by reading about what I will encounter before going in.
Absolutely fantastic game though, and very worth the little spooky parts
I would add Control to this list.
Outer Wilds and Cyberpunk are probably my top two (agree also with Halo but that’s even older than Mass Effect)
The outer worlds fits the bill, classic scifi aesthetics with a crew in space.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and its sequel Mankind Divided
Cyberpunk, half life, talos principle, system shock, soma, prey, observer, dead space, star wars (in general, i love most of the games). Noone quite does what mass effect does. Kotor is the closest. But these are great games.
It's something I've learned to appreciate only recently: only since getting back into strategy games, to be exact. All my previous sci-fi escapades so far as gaming goes, have mostly been confined to Mass Effect (which I still hold to be *the* sci-fi video game epic of our age).
However, lately I've been trying to explore games and genres outside of my usual comfy place and one of those games was Stellaris. Overwhelming at first, you say? Damn sure it was, especially for someone who barely touched Paradox games. Something about Stellaris just felt different, and part of it probably had to do with the sci-fi theme which I'm a sucker for anyhow -- as well as the fact it was set on a galactic scale. I had dozens of hours of fun just customizing my race, let alone actually playing the game. When I did finally set on what I wanted -- I was in it for the loooong haul. And it's the organic world building - with so many emergent factors - that felt so compelling to behold. The interactions with different factions/nations are building toward an ultimately (kinda) personal story of one species in a galaxy-wide sandbox. The roleplaying was... a lot different from anything I had ever done before and boy was I nasty with some of the options I had.
Long story short, that's how I found my newest (sub-)obsession, and that's futuristic/spacefaring/post-apo themes and settings in strategy games. Those that let me behold (and build/guide) all the sheer dimensions and complexity that are only otherwise implied in most sci-fi works. There's something almost hypnotizing about it...
Now I'm slowly retreading my steps through classics like the Command and Conquer series to see what my kid brain was too dumb to appreciate. I've also been playing plenty of Retro Commander with my older brother (who's way more into sci-fi proper than me) and it's also been an eye opener in how oh so many pixels can convey a sense of futuristic combat. No really -- Retro Commander literally let me build up an army of just DRONES and almost demolish my bro's base with that alone, just because he didn't make a good counter (thinking me a noob most likely). I also appreciated how the post-apocalyptic setting was handled in the story: basically, humans are almost gone, so they use tactical attacks by various robotic units as the main warfare strategy... Something I don't think I've encountered anywhere else - this trope of lone survivors using armies of robots and machines against each other. It's almost a complete twist on the gritty post-apocalypse scavenger survival tropes that are way more common.
There's something there, I think, something valuable. The scale of the world actually being shown to you in strategy games (TBS/RTS doesn't matter) does something special for sci-fi. It still leaves mystery while also not just insinuating - but presenting all the key pieces of the setting on a large, cosmic map for you to explore (in a manner of speaking) at your own pace.
Outpost 2: Divided Destiny, while not a commercial success, was a really interesting game and forward-looking approach at storytelling.
Effectively, it's the story of mankind's last two colonies, long after Earth has been wiped out, attempting to survive on an alien planet. It was one colony—Eden—but split into two over ideological differences, resulting in Plymouth. The game made a lot of effort to base its technology in real-world hard-science, to the result that one of the researchable techs you can reach in the late game my science teacher assured me was thoroughly Sci-Fi ... but is now real, that tech being a Reusable Launch Vehicle, or RLV.
The game also came with an ebook (in 1997) that told a story alongside the games campaigns of several people living in the colonies as things progressed. I read it years and years ago, so I can't speak for the quality, but it was definitely bold for 1997.
Homeworld is also definitely top-notch Sci-Fi, with its tale of a people discovering their dying world is not their world and setting out on an exodus across the galaxy.
Homeworld set the bar for me.
large scale scifi rts: Supreme COmmander 1 with Forged Alliance expansion
scifi rts in space: Homeworld 1-Emergence-2; Imperium Galactica 2, Haegemonia
smaller scale scifi rts: Grey Goo, Metal Fatigue
mixed turn based and rts scifi: Star Wars Empire at War with Forces of Corruption expansion
turn based: Civilization Beyond Earth and Sid Meier's Starships
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri is two and a half decades old, but it remains the finest example of storytelling in a strategy game that I've ever come across. If you're familiar with the Civilization formula, it's very much that from a mechanics perspective, but instead of historical quotes for all the technologies, city improvements base facilities, and wonders secret projects, you get quotes from within the universe, including from the faction leaders you and the AI are playing as. There are some explicit narrative 'interludes' that pop up on occasion as you hit different milestones, making sure you understand the broad narrative, but then the aforementioned quotes flesh out everything else about the world, allowing you to slowly piece together just how human society has developed over hundreds of years on this alien world.
Have you played X4: Foundations? I love this game. It's a mix between strategy, first/third person dog fighting individual ship piloting up to fleet command. You can pick a faction/race to work with, help them build up their trade economy, military defenses, etc. help defend sectors from other factions, help attack others, etc. A playthrough can be anywhere from "micro: I just want to be a guy flying a ship, trading, sellswording, exploring!" to "macro: I will lead the Terran Protectorate, defeat her enemies, defend her systems and bring prosperity with my massive fleet and trade network!" You can buy, design, build space stations that focus on say Ship building, build a network of material trade to that station and other factions/NPCs will buy ships/weapons from you. Build a dry dock and they'll seek out repairs. Got a massive mining fleet and want to fuel the galaxy with it? Do it. Got a massive trade fleet and want to connect the farthest regions and expand that empire? Do it. Prefer the military life? Start as a some fighter pilot guy, run some missions perhaps save to afford that shitty destroyer or maybe you find a broken one and capture it, fix it all up and take on bigger threats. Fill in a position in a fleet, sail the stars with them and slowly grow your wealth, afford more pilots and ships and build your star fleet. Become an Aegis against a particular unknown threat or realize the fight is futile and attack your neighbors in a bid to gain back what was lost in a hopes of staying alive.
It's janky at times, it's not perfect, it has so much depth that it can feel impossible to comprehend, it can be unfair, the AI can be finicky, but when it all comes together.. It's pretty great. Something about sailing with a fleet of destroyers, carriers and battleships that are an imposing wall is so great. And when that fleet engages an enemy and your missile boats fire, your artillery pieces open up and the lasers start going its a spectacle. Add in the point defense fire defending against small ships and missiles and it really shines... And then leave the comfort of your capital ship and get into a suped up fighter that you upgraded and fly out into the middle of it in cockpit mode and it's just nuts. It's so neat to me to, for example, have a carrier. You get to pick which ships it carries. You get to outfit each and every one, you get to upgrade them. Some have missiles, some have lasers, some have the best of the best shields, some are out of luck because the attack came before you could finish your upgrade. Send out the interceptors to defend against bombers? Bombers to attack ships? Mix and match? Defend the ship? defend a particular sector or ship? have them follow you in formation as you lead them into the fray? All options. Have a couple of carriers and keep trade lines safe, feel like your input on the galaxy matters.
I'm gonna go re-download it now... Shit.
I am very into sci-fi recently in books, series, movies and now I wanna play some sci-fi games.
Love me some heavy world building. Preferably the game is fairly short because I get bored easily.
I'm open to any genre of game.
What are your favorites?
I've only played the 2017 Prey and it's one of my favorite sci-fi games of all time, no contest.
Mass Effect is among my favorite sci-fi stories, and the world building is great.
I hate that game because I hate shooters, but I love the science fiction world building in it.
This is a really solid choice, but perhaps on the longer side for OP. I’m not sure there is a good way to do in-depth world building with a much shorter game, though. Mass Effect at least cuts the fluff that similar games have.
If you give this a shot and find yourself getting bored with the first, gameplay gets way better with the following two. If you enjoy this, I would also tack on Deus Ex, Outer Worlds, and Cyberpunk 2077, OP. These are all somewhat long, but short and dense by RPG standards.
I'll expand on this:
The Mass Effect Franchise. In fact the whole series is on major sale right now with the legendary edition which has three games and all their dlcs in one convenient package.
Amazing story, unforgettable characters, top-tier worldbuilding, awesome 3rd person combat, solid visuals and music. Action, comedy, romance, philosophy, drama.
Your choices matter and carry over in-between games, so if you play your cards right, most of the amazing cast of characters will survive but some are fated to die dramatic and impactful deaths no matter what. So this has got everything you want and more. You're welcome.
It is three games long, and very compelling, but nothing says you have to complete it all at once. Play until you get bored, then stop and come back later. It's worth it.
Star Trek Online is a bit of a let down nowadays. The story is awesome but they can make the gameplay so boring.
I hate how in the Terran Gambit you have like 4 bosses which is literally the same.
If you're okay with a constant state of fear then Alien Isolation is perfect for you
You are working for an interplanetary mining corporation that sends you and your friends alongside with different machines and robots to extract raw material from various solar bodies and clean their equipment from alien infestation. While asteroid mining might be around the corner, at this moment it's still closer to science fiction than to a profitable business solution.
I agree wholeheartedly. The gameplay is kind of like a 2D Portal physics platform puzzler. Loved the creepy claymation style backgrounds.
The sell for me however was the story and the writing (same writer that worked on FTL and Amnesia the Dark Descent). I remember specifically towards the end of the game the thought hit me about the morality of cloning myself and then basically sacrificing and killing most of these clones just to get across obstacles... Then the ending.
The only downside to the game IMHO was that I had to search YouTube to see the alternate ending.
I’m halfway though writing a sci-fi book and feel like some inspiration is in order.
It’s based in a space station, so there are starships, multiple factions, exploration of new star systems, etc. I know Starfield is coming soon but have a few free weeks right now.
Someone recommended the remastered Mass Effect series to me. Still a good play in 2023?
Are there any other terrific sci-fi games that are still great to play right now?
Definitely mass effect. It’s one of the best sci fi stories around. And gameplay still holds up pretty decently. Even 1 is pretty good with the changes made in the LE. Where it had felt really dated by the original ME3 release.
If you want to be immersed but also terrified out of your mind, play Alien: Isolation. It's like being in the Alien movie, they really took the time to make sure every single detail on the space station matched the movie, including the sounds.
And the xenomorph is terrifyingly accurate too.
Outer Worlds is story focused with interesting characters.
Prey, hands down the most immersive sci-fi game ive ever played.
Absolutely. The space station is so fully realized, and you can find everyone whose name you're reading on the ships logs/emails/etc.
I just started this game last weekend and I am LOVING IT! I kept seeing people talk about how good it was so I decided to give it a go. I’m about 10 hours in and it’s amazing. The lore, the skill system, the different ways to approach the game, the voice acting, the visuals, the setting, the themes, it’s all there. I’m really enthralled so far and can’t wait to dig deeper into the story and find out more about the history of Talos I and my character in the game.
I've looked at this game before. This comment convinced me to buy it. The fact that a bundle with both Prey games and DLC is on sale on Steam for 9.99 helped too.
I found Mass Effect incredibly boring and dated, so ymmv.
Starfield is coming out in a month or two. It will probably be broken due to bugs and overhyped way beyond realistic expectations, but check the reviews.
Mass Effect still rocks. Big recommendation.
I can’t recommend ME:Legendary enough. It’s dated a bit and there’s very little space in space, but the story is phenomenal.
Alien Isolation is on the top of my list
Have you played Death Stranding? I heard that it's good
Yep, finished it and got the platinium !
The Horizon series is pretty damn good. Post-Post- apocalypse. Not a car to be found, but the technology is everywhere.
I hope your talking about Horizon Zero Dawn and not Forza Horizon. 😆
That's a joke btw
Outer wilds ofcourse. Changed my life
I really enjoyed that game as well, love the art style its wonderful too
Half-Life
Mass Effect trilogy no doubt
End of thread.
Which do you think are the best/funnest?
I'm having troubles picking one overall, but, I can narrow it down per console...
NES: Crystalis
Genesis: Phantasy Star 4
SNES: Secret of Evermore
N64: Turok 64
Dreamcast: Phantasy Star: Online
PS1: Xenogears
PS2: Armored Core: Nexus
GameCube: F-Zero GX
XBOX: Knights of the Old Republic
Wii: Metroid Prime
PS3: Dead Space (whole series including the spin-off stuff)
PS4: Destiny 2
PC: No Man's Sky
Mass Effect Trilogy
Deus Ex. The one and only, 2000 edition.
Alpha Centauri (weird, I know)
Remember Me (even weirder :) )
Half-Life series
Unreal
Jedi Knight series
Outer wilds is pretty good IMO.
Halo, Destiny, Deus Ex, Fallout, Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic, Half Life, Portal. Borderlands is marginally sci fi, but great fun too.
Just starting playing Mass Effect legendary edition for the first time, and I'm loving it. The in depth lore is awesome. I'm also a massive Halo fan if that helps.
No spoilers please!
You are in for a freaking treat with the Mass Effect trilogy. Enjoy.
In a way, I believe I'd classify Subnautica in the sci-fi genre. You crash in the crater of an underwater volcano, and have to find a way to survive, and eventually find a way offworld.
If you're into retro/classic games, try out Knights of the Old Republic. That was Bioware's precursor to Mass Effect.
I think a remake is coming for the PS5 in a year or two.
Everyone play Outer Wilds it's on game pass
Destiny 2
This question makes me realize how few story-based sci-fi games there are like Mass Effect. Hoping Starfield ends up filling that void.
But in terms of past games 100% go with Knights of the Old Republic.
I'm not a big gamer these days but I'm in the mood for playing something sci-fi over the holidays. What are your favourite sci-fi games?
Mass Effect Trilogy
Star Wars Battlefront
Titan Fall 1 & 2
Supreme Commander / Total Annihilation
Half-Life 2
Starcraft 2 campaign
Heroes of the Storm
KOTOR 1 & 2
EVE Online
No Man's Sky
Xcom 2
Sins of a Solar Empire
I know I'm missing a few but this is what came to mind right away.
The Armada 3 Star Trek overhaul mod for Sins of a Solar Empire is the best Star Trek game by far. Can't recommend enough.
I recently played Prey, pretty fun game.
Prey is top-notch. Also try System Shock 2 if you're looking for a more classic feel.
Mass effect trilogy
Soma
Dead space 1 and 2
Fallout new Vegas,1 and 2
Portal 1 and 2
The Talos principle
Alien isolation
Deus ex 1, human revolution and mankind divided
Oh God! Are you me? All these games are masterpieces! I would only add Half life 2!
Hehe, here i will add system shock remake and bioshock .
I hear that Portal 2 is the best, but do you need to play Portal 1 first?
In case you're like me and missed this slipping by under the radar, there is a Talos Principle 2 now, and it's fantastic.
Dead Space remake is also really good, and is an amazing remake of the original.
Elite Dangerous is a flight sym mashed with a fantastic sci fi backdrop. It's a great podcast/audiobook game and it's so fun to just fly between stations to trade goods while upgrading your ship for exploration, bounty hunting, alien combat, etc. It can be daunting to get into at first, but once you learn the basics you don't need to go too in depth to learn the mechanics unless you really want to.
E:D is awesome for several things.
Flight model for spacecraft
Sound design
Exploration
I'm not an advanced player at all, but E:D is the best I've ever played in those three areas.
