TL;DR
Star Wars: Rebellion
Star Wars: Rebellion is consistently mentioned as the top choice among Star Wars board games. It is known for its deep strategy and immersive experience that captures the essence of the Star Wars universe [1:3]
[2:6]. The game requires several hours to play and a lot of table space, making it ideal for dedicated gaming sessions
[1:11]. It's particularly recommended for two players, offering an intense "dudes on the map" war game simulating the galactic civil war
[2:7].
Star Wars: Outer Rim
Outer Rim provides a sandbox-style experience where players take on the roles of smugglers and bounty hunters. It has received positive feedback for its thematic gameplay and the expansion adds significant variety [2:4]
[2:12]. While not as heavy as Rebellion, it still offers a rich Star Wars experience and is suitable for family game nights
[2:5].
Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Pandemic System)
This game adapts the popular Pandemic system to the Star Wars universe, focusing on cooperative play where players work together to stop Separatist villains [5]. It is appreciated for its thematic missions based on episodes from The Clone Wars series
[5], providing a fun and engaging experience for fans of the show
[2:10].
Other Notable Mentions
These games cater to different preferences, whether you're looking for strategic depth, cooperative play, or thematic immersion in the Star Wars universe.
I heard the Clone Wars Pandemic is great, the Hoth Battle too. I don't play TCGs or Role-playing card games, my question is about board games. Thanks !
Star Wars Rebellion with the expansion. It's the best board game I've ever played, full stop.
This is definitely without a doubt the best Star Wars game you can play, so long as you’re into heavier-leaning rule sets. The expansion overhauls combat & it can be played with your first play of the base game (we did this and we had a blast).
Not many games out there that are overall better than this one. BGG doesn’t lie.
I gotta agree this is the best star wars game. Maybe not best game ever (for me) but this one is a really really good Star Wars experience.
Clarifying for OP: The box lists play time as 3 to 4 hours and you need a lot of table space. It is a great game.
This. If you have the ability to sit down for the several hours it takes to play, it is the quintessential Star-Wars-In-a-box.
Runner up to Decipher’s Star Wars CCG. The amount of theme possible in that was insane. But drawbacks were an awful rarity system that kept all the main characters locked out by a paywall for at least half the game’s life, and a staggeringly large ruleset to handle all said thematic elements, from asteroid fields to lightsaber duels to sabacc to bounty hunting to hoth shield rules and nighttime and… well, you get the picture.
I've had a lot of Star Wars games go through my collection, and the only one that I think will never leave is Outer Rim.
This game is fabulous. It gave me everything I wanted from the Firefly board game, but set in my favorite universe!
100%
I was never into Firefly (no hate if that's anyone's favourite show, I just never got into it) so I found it a lot more engaging than the Firefly board game. If someone already has one, I don't think they need the other.
I have enjoyed Star Wars Deckbuilding game. Both original and Clone Wars. I have Star Wars Rebellion but I need to carve out time for that one for me and my wife (main gaming partner)
I have this game and enjoy it as well, but I do wish it had more frequent ways to cull your deck or draw more cards. I know these are powerful abilities in deck builders, but I often feel like that by the time I've acquired and been able to use some of the bigger, cooler cards, the game is almost over.
I think many deck builders could benefit from this. Let us use the cool cards more!
This is a regular at my house too. Wifey and I throw down often, and we just picked up Clone Wars!
+1 for Star Wars Rebellion. Excellent 2 player game
My family is made up of disney fans. And nowadays, disney has good options when it comes to games. We already have:
That's what we play and collect. We're still missing something for star wars. Any ideas? Or any news on something good coming up?
Star Wars Risk - It's super fun, ignore the word Risk, it isn't Risk
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/183880/risk-star-wars-edition
Star Wars Rebellion. It's big though
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/187645/star-wars-rebellion
Star Wars the Deck Building game - Good fun, 2 players
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/374173/star-wars-deckbuilding-game
Id highly recommend Star wars: The deck building game. Its quick to setup and play, pretty fun and accessible. You can even combine 2 boxes to play 2vs2, but haven’t tried that yet
Star Wars: Outer Rim and Star Wars: Rebellion are my two favorites. Outer Rim is a sandbox smuggler/bounty hunter style game, Rebellion is a dudes on the map war game simulating the galactic civil war, sort of like War of the Ring.
Theres also Imperial Assault, which Ive never played but is very well reviewed. Descent with a Star Wars skin.
If I could only pick one it would be rebellion. Though its best at two players.
If you go with Outer Rim, I would grab the expansion at the same time. It adds a lot of variety that the base game was missing.
Outer Rim is a great game, and the expansion is a must have as people have said. I think it's also worth noting that everything in the expansion will fit in the original box, which I think is a massive plus if I'm taking it to a mate's house to play.
Rebellion is in my top five of board games overall, but a warning is that it is a table hog, it is relatively heavy, and you need to block off hours for it
Good games, but I'll just throw out that both are a pretty big step up rules wise from the games he mentioned playing with his family.
Star Wars: Villianous is a fun game where you play as villains attempting to complete your evil plot before the other players do. Each player has different game mechanics to reach their goal so it is a pretty asymmetric game.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars is currently my favorite cooperative game. It is based on the critically acclaimed Pandemic system but isn’t just a reskin. You play as Jedi during the clone wars and must complete special mission objectives while fighting back droid incursions and dealing with a villain character who it attempting an evil plot. Once you complete your missions, then you can take on the villain in a final showdown.
Both of these games are good family weight games and play in about an hour or so but have plenty of replay ability.
These are great suggestions for family game nights - and both fun in their own right. Rebellion and Outer Rim are both superb but likely too heavy for family game night.
The Villainous system is great. It's sort of like a TCG, only the decks are defined AND each deck comes with a separate "bad stuff" deck that players use to mess with you - this means the decks are only able to mess with each other so much, and only in an annoying way without ever being a total shutout.
Star Wars Deckbuilding Game
Star Wars The Clone Wars (Pandemic System)
Star Wars Outer Rim (pick up and deliver)
Good call on Clone Wars. Really fun, well-produced and the multiple villain options gives it a lot of replayability.
Bought it and had my first play at the granite state board game convention a few weeks ago. It’s a fun thematic game. I enjoyed battling for roads and cities.
Is there any rule variations from the original?
Some slight scoring objective changes, but the big one is instead of sharing scoring features, you battle for them. It’s pretty fun
Shame they only made one expansion
Now I have another thing to find
I need!!
Wow!!
Spaceballs, the board game.
When those came out in the summer of '95 ('96?), my friends and I went crazy. It was an obsession for me. None of us ever took the time to figure out how to actually play, but we collected them and traded them. I always loved the lore and pictures the most.
I played it. The cards were cool, but the mechanics were pretty terrible.
That's a bummer, but I guess I don't feel as bad getting rid of so many of my cards then...
We went crazy too but we did love to play. I remember saving up forever to get a Darth Vader card, then dropping it in a game to my stunned friends. Loved the flavor text it really got us into the star wars nerd pipeline.
I really would've loved to have played. I could've figured out on my own with some help (i.e. not my friends), but after a while, no one seemed interested. My wife has a friend who still plays. Maybe I'll hit him up some time. I still have some cards.
I spent $30 at our local mall to buy The Executor one time. That was great :)
Same. We were some hardcore MtG nerds, but when SW:CCG came out we quickly channeled our nerd funds to trying to land a Jawa on Hoth equipped with a lightsaber.
The flavor text of a lot of the Dagobah and Cloud City cards were great.
Though I enjoy Unlimited, the Decipher original trilogy was amazing. Loved the design of the cards with the photos. Game was so fun back in the day and I still have all my old cards.
Star wars unlimited by far atm
Star Wars Unlimited! Came out last year and it’s a straight banger.
Yeah this is the one. SWU has the best take on drafting I've seen in a card game. I prefer it to drafting mtg now.
Sabaak…?
Howdy!
I recently bought this board game from Barnes & Noble and wanted to share it here because I have loved my experience with it.
The game is 1-5 players and is like Pandemic where the Separatists are the virus. Players work together as heroes to stop a Separatist villain(s).
Throughout the game players must move from planet to planet to prevent droid occupations from getting out of hand while completing missions on specific planets. The missions are named after episodes of TCW which is my favorite part. Between every allied turns the villain gets a turn, doing things to increase threat level, damage Allie’s, or build up droid forces.
Once you complete a specific number of missions then a final battle is unlocked with the particular villain you are facing, representative of the final canon demise of that villain. If you can complete the final battle before the threat level reaches maximum then you win.
The difficulty of the game is controlled by the number of missions before the final battle and the villain you are playing against. It is very replay-able.
The game as a whole is super detailed and great for Star Wars needs. My wife, friends, and I have been having a blast with it and wanted to share it with y’all!
There's a sale going on, and I am a starwars fan.. but I'm not sure what's good. The only kind of games I don't like are mmo like ones.
Good answers so far, so I'll just chime in that KOTOR has a huge remaster coming that you may want to wait for.
I might also toss Empire At War into the mix, especially modded, if you're interested in strategy. It's a good balance of depth and arcadey simplicity that makes it easy to dive into, but still fun to play
Empire at War is the Star Wars game that - after LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga - I definitely enjoyed most. The thing is that the latter is only good on Nintendo DS and Empire at War is a PC blockbuster.
How is Complete Saga only good on DS thooo
KOTOR, the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series, Republic Commando
Thank you.
FYI - KOTOR 2 was released in a buggy and incomplete state. Some quests were present in the release, but disabled. It was a disappointing mess (to me, anyway) at the time.
However, there's a free mod called "The Sith Lords Restored Content Modification" that makes a significant difference. It's a great game with the mod, and the mod is easily found (including the steam workshop).
If you like the first one, then the sequel is definitely worth it...with the restored content mod.
Jedi Fallen Order
Kotor & Kotor 2.
Jedi fallen order
Lego Star Wars
The force unleashed
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
First game I thought of if you want to play something modern. This may sound heritical but it beats Jedi Knight 2 by a long shot. That's still a worthy game though!
Republic Commando, Jedi Academy
Yeah it's KOTOR followed by Jedi Fallen Order.
Dark Forces or Tie Fighter.
for me it's Jedi Knight II Jedi Outcast but I did play a good bit of Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight, that's where I converted to Inverted controls because it seemed easier in 3rd person saber dueling
I don't think I ever played the original Dark Forces but I was aware of it
I'm an inverted control guy too. People think I'm mental. Never played dark forces 2.
Dark Forces gets my vote. It was the first time I felt like I was actually *in* the Star Wars universe. It blew my teenage mind.
Yes, I just aged myself.
Dark Forces was amazing at its time. Too bad it's no longer canon.
KOTOR 1
Jedi Outcast and Academy are also top tier games
Came here to say the same thing! :)
jk outcast and academy were soo much fun back in the day - me n schoolmates had a blast playing the multiplayer with dismemberment on! :D
I don't think any sw game has since managed to capture the true feeling of lightsaber and force mastery.
All the singleplayer action games since have just felt like they were built purely to cash in on the brand (much like the recent films and shows) rather than for the joy of storytelling and genuine adventure.
I couldn't even finish fallen order cos I just found it so repetitive and tedious, much like AC Valhalla - All flash and no trousers! Just fancy gimmicks and tired tropes wrapped in AAA graphics.
Shout out to the kotor's - loved them for their story more than their gameplay tho if I'm honest!
As a Star Wars fanboy back in the day, the acrobatics, saber combat, and force powers of Outcast blew my mind, which were then further improved by Academy. It was THE Jedi/force wielder experience you always imagined having
I haven’t tried Fallen Order or Survivor, and likely won’t unless they ever go on sale for $5 lol
Outcast was such a great way to phase the Jedi Knight games into the modern day of the time. I wish we still had that series! Kyle Katarn is my boy.
Space Chuck Norris is the best! Loved the outcast and academy games. Probably played through the academy story like 7 times.
Definitely the best lightsaber play still to Date.
KOTOR 2 is peak
Happy May the 4th! Feels like it's time to finally invest in a Star Wars board game. And it seems the consensus top choices people recommend fall to Star Wars Imperial Assault and Star Wars Rebellion. So the question I ask Reddit, which one is worth picking up if I can only get one? What games would you compare it to? Which one feels more thematic to the star wars franchise? All suggestions are welcome!
How many people do you normally play with? Rebellion advertises itself as a 2-4 player game, but it's really a 2-player game at its heart.
Well it's something I would like to play with my gf cause she's a big star wars fan but I do tend to favor and attempt to play 4 player games
Imperial Assault if you want a cinematic heroic ground-fight / exploration game.
Rebellion if you want to recreate the Galactic Civil War at a high level. Rebellion really needs the expansion, the base combat system is OK and fine for a few play throughs, but the expansion combat and leader changes really improve the game. I do not recommend it 3+.
Outer Rim if you want to play at being smugglers.
Rebellion has 2 sides and really excels at 2 players. 3 and 4 players has one extra minor strategy tweak to keep in mind but basically comes down to two players sharing the duties of their side. Makes it take a little longer for strategizing but it’s still really good.
Get Outer Rim (and its expansion) if you want a four player game, get Rebellion (and its expansion, FFG games really benefit from that first expansion) if you want a two player game. I think IA is fine but I think the Descent system has a bunch of flaws. And it's also a game you kind of have to commit to if you're going to get a lot out of it. Outer Rim and Rebellion make for better one off experiences and are both fantastic games that are super thematic.
Imperial assault only works as a campaign, and the rebellion players need to be invested in learning rules and strengthening their gameplay or it's a total slog. I wouldn't recommend it just because you like star wars.
Rebellion can support 4 players, but only by dividing up the 2p main games roles.
They are mechanically quite different so you will have to decide for yourself based on your interests: Rebellion is a wargame for two players which takes about 3-4 hours to play. Imperial Assault is a dungeon crawler/gloomhaven RPG-lite for 2-5 players. This feels like a blend of Mass Effect 2 and XCOM 2 in board game form.
They are very, VERY different games. Imperial Assault is descent 2.0 but in the star wars universe. Rebellion is like a more complex, thematic and strategic Fury of Dracula for 2 players.
No love for Outer Rim? I have Rebelllion, but play Outer Rim 10x more.
I have both but Outer Rim is definitely my favourite. Every single time we've played Rebellion, the rebels have won. Not sure if we're doing it wrong but we've tried different people playing each side and the rebels have won every time.
We played it and Clone Wars Pandemic yesterday for Star Wars Day and had a lot of fun with both.
They're such wildly different play experiences that it's really hard to draw meaningful comparisons tbh
They are both super thematic, and both well rated. I've own both and highly enjoy both.
However, I think you need to ask yourself:
Do you want a 2 player epic head to head game that can last over 4 hours, or do you want a one vs many cooperative game that spans 6-11 campaign missions? (IA has full cooperative but that's not really where it shines and you don't use like 25% of the components )
Imperial Assault is long out of print, what expansions do you want and are you willing to make the effort to track down the dozens of expansions?
Rebellion is more like Twilight Imperium, mechanically. Advanced version of Risk.
Ive always wanted to play the games because i love the movies, but I dont know which ones are good and if some are bad. Ive played the lego ones already though because you cant go wrong with lego.
I would ask as to what style of starwars game are you looking for? Personally I just got back into the MMO The Old Republic, which I e been off and on for some time now. I love it, but get bored when I can't find a group of people to hang and play with. Steam had a starwars sale that sold almost every title on PC for like $15? Maybe keep an eye out?
Jedi: Fallen Order
Can't go wrong with Knights of the Old Republic, Dark Forces, and the Battlefront series
KOTOR, Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy
I never see anyone talk about Galaxies. That game was awesome. Way more addicting than KOTR IMO. Though the stories in KOTR 1 and 2 were 👌
