TL;DR Six Flags Magic Mountain is often considered the best due to its variety and quantity of coasters, while Great America is praised for its charm and well-maintained rides. Fiesta Texas also receives high marks for its park atmosphere.
Magic Mountain
Magic Mountain is frequently highlighted as the flagship park of Six Flags due to its extensive lineup of roller coasters and scenic beauty. The park offers a diverse range of attractions, including some all-time favorites like Revolution [1:1]. Its location on top of a mountain adds unique exploration opportunities, making it a must-visit for thrill-seekers
[1:1].
Great America
Great America is praised for its cleanliness, scenic views, and historical charm [1:2]. It has a balanced selection of quality rides, although it lacks a standout attraction. The park is well-loved by locals and features popular rides such as Batman
[1:2]. However, it's important to note that Great America is closed during the winter months
[2:6].
Fiesta Texas
Fiesta Texas is often recommended for its excellent park atmosphere and ride selection [2:1]
[2:3]. It provides a great experience for visitors looking for a mix of fun and relaxation. Additionally, combining a visit with Sea World San Antonio can make for an enjoyable trip
[2:1].
Great Adventure
Great Adventure is known for its iconic rides like Kingda Ka and El Toro [3:4]
[3:1]. While it offers thrilling experiences, some visitors have noted issues with ride maintenance and operations
[1:6]
[5:4]. It's also closed from January to April, so timing your visit is crucial
[2:4].
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
When choosing a Six Flags park to visit, consider factors such as the time of year, park closures, and personal preferences for ride types and park ambiance. If you are planning a trip in the winter months, focus on parks located in warmer climates or those open year-round.
For me it’s
Great America
St Louis
I’ve only been to 2
Great America just doesn't have wny flaws to me. Clean, scenic, well themed, and with a history. and huge selection of quality rides, with the last thing missing being a launched coaster.. which is opening this year. I think this SF park is the best cared for and most beloved by the locals for sure. It also has my favorite version of Batman!
Over Georgia. I love the charm of the three original parks, and SFOG has the benefit of not only being the closest to me, but also being the first SF park I ever visited. It also has the best selection of rides, without any real holes in the lineup besides a launched coaster and a second woodie. Goliath, Mind Bender, and Twisted Cyclone are some of my favorite coasters. I put it lower because it feels run down in some parts and is a tedious park to navigate.
Over Texas. By far this is the most charming of the SF parks. Lots of trees and old buildings and charming theming left over. It also has a big coaster lineup, though I think SFOG's is better. I think their Gotham section is tasteless and they deserve a better hyper coaster, but having my second favorite RMC definitely helps.
St. Louis. It has the same charm and history, three awesome woodies, and two solid steel coasters. The lineup is small, but for me that just increases the charm. Plus the park was empty when we went, so no lines on a nice day was lovely.
Fiesta Texas. A smaller lineup like St. Louis, but unlike that park it feels like wasted potential. Only three of their coasters interact with the quarry, and so does the starflyer, and the rest are clones. Their Batman clone is unthemed, Poltergeist is in a backlot, and WWGLC isn't really my cup of tea. In addition, the park doesn't have much shade at all. Aside from that, having my favorite RMC, Floorless, and Mine Train, in addition to an incredible setting for a park in a very fun city, makes this one a can't-miss.
Great Adventure. While the ride selection is huge, my compliments end there. This park is ugly. Faded buildings and signs, cracked sidewalks, and generally bitter staff and rude guests put a sour taste in my mouth. My love for Nitro isn't enough to make me want to revisit this one.
America. This park has all of the stuff I disliked about SFGAdv and more. An awful layout for a park, a sub par collection of coasters with only a couple untamed woodies to make it enjoyable, and a feeling of dread that made me leave early. I know lots of people have this as their home park but one of these needs to be at the bottom.
SFA is my home park now that I finally have season passes there. The last time I went, Superman was new! I went once this year so far and was pleasantly surprised. The top 3 are all excellent: Wild One, Superman and Roar. Especially Wild One and Superman. They are both fantastic. Operations were slow, but it wasn't very crowded so it was fine and it was 2 train ops on everything. Will be going again possibly this weekend, but more likely the next. The park isn't bad looking and even has a surprisingly nice looking parking lot with lots of trees. The same can't be said for Kings Dominion. The park itself needs more shade trees, though. Also it's pretty small, but then that makes it easy to get to all the coasters. Batwing was down so I couldn't try that yet.
I totally respect your opinion, but Great Adventure is unusually low in your list. I'm curious as to what you don't like about it.
They don't maintain their rides well at all. El Toro and Ka are rougher than they should be and all the B&M's need a new coat of paint (guess it's finally being addressed with Superman - the most dull parking lot coaster there).
It just sucks that when I visited in 2012, I visited a better park than the one they have today (RIP Rolling Thunder). You never want to see that trajectory in a park.
Magic Mountain
Over Georgia
Fiesta Texas
Great America
New England
Great Adventure
Over Texas
America
Discovery Kingdom
Magic Mountain: There's a reason this is the flagship park. Besides the obvious quantity of coasters, their line up is well varied with some of my all time favorites (as a big Arrow fan you can probably guess what those are), and I appreciate the work they've done to preserve Revolution. It's also a pretty park with some interesting areas (such as on top of the mountain) to explore.
Great America: Great America is definitely one of the more charming Six Flags parks, from the entrance plaza to the preservation of classics such as Whizzer and Little Dipper. While I'm not sure if any one coaster is stand out for me (I really love Whizzer and Viper though), the line up as a whole is really good, and I always enjoy myself when I visit.
New England I totally admit I'm biased towards SFNE but Superman really does propel this park up the list, and though I'm still bitter about losing Cyclone, Wicked Cyclone is a stand out as well, and at least we still have Thunderbolt. I just wish this park had more flats (especially since we used to have so many) and another stand out coaster.
Over Georgia Mind Bender and Goliath are both fantastic, and I adore Monster Mansion. Twisted Cyclone is good, not great, and I'm disappointed that Cyclone wasn't kept and taken care of. The supporting line up is decent which is always a plus, and while there's ugly parts of the park there's also very pretty sections, and I love how many trees there are overall. Subconsciously taking points away because it's been unbearably hot every time I've gone.
Fiesta Texas This is by far the prettiest and most personable Six Flags park, and I love that the unique terrain is utilized heavily for several of their major rides. While the ride line up is a bit weaker than the parks above it and Iron Rattler is one of my least favorite RMCs, I'm excited to get back to ride Wonder Woman.
St Louis This is really a hidden gem of a park, especially for someone like me who loves wooden coasters, though Mr. Freeze is awesome as well. I really wish this park would get something new (and no, not RMC Boss) as the only real issue with this place is that it doesn't have a shiny new coaster to draw people in.
Great Adventure Obviously El Toro and Nitro are amazing, and the safari is a major plus and worth a visit for that alone, but this park is just so unlikable. The layout sucks, it's ugly, it's dirty, the loose item policy enrages me, and visiting just never feels like a very pleasant experience.
Over Texas Another one I just don't love. It's disappointing to see so much of the park's history cast aside (You have a huge visual history of the park set up in a smoking section, great job guys), and a lot of it just felt a bit run down. Still, the coaster line up is pretty good, and I do like the bits of theming and history that are still around.
Great Escape While Comet is awesome, the rest of the coaster line up definitely isn't. However, I'm placing it slightly above America because it's a really charming park, probably the prettiest after Fiesta Texas.
America Despite being last this park really isn't bad, and I always enjoy myself for the all of 2 hours I spend there whenever I visit. Wild One is wonderful and is by far the star of the park but Superman, Roar, and Joker's Jinx are fun too. This park could be great with another star coaster, a couple interesting flats, and sprucing it up a bit so that half the park doesn't exist on what looks like an abandoned field.
Wait, they still have smoking sections? Is that just a Texas thing?
EDIT: I do remember a smoking section at Great Adventure now, but not at New England. I was just thinking that maybe public smoking laws or regulations were more lax in Texas. Either way, ouch for having one of those cover up a historic mural.
I think all the Six Flags parks do? I don't smoke and they're mostly tucked away so I don't usually notice.
New england has one by the staircase leading up to superman
> Wait, they still have smoking sections? Is that just a Texas thing?
>EDIT: I do remember a smoking section at Great Adventure now, but not at New England. I was just thinking that maybe public smoking laws or regulations were more lax in Texas. Either way, ouch for having one of those cover up a historic mural.
There are multiple smoking sections at SFMM. The ones I can think of right of the top of my head are the one next to the Shady Rest Room next to Tatsu/Roaring Rapids, one off to the side of Green Lantern in the DC Universe area and one just behind the Screampunk District sign headed towards SCREAM! and Twisted Colossus.
Next year in January I'll have the opportunity to go on a trip to any Six Flags park. I originally thought that since I live in the southwest it would make more sense for me to go to one of the east coast parks (especially Great Adventure), since it's unlikely for me to visit again, but I'm not sure what people think would be better.
Great America has perhaps the best balanced line up, even if it doesn't have a true stand out. Also, outside of Fiesta it has one of the best vibes.
Great America is closed after Fright Fest until next spring. So it’ll be closed when OP visits.
Good point, I totally read over the part that the trip is in January....
Good point, I totally read over the part that the trip is in January....
I would say Great America if they actually still had Holiday in the Park but Fiesta Texas is actually a really really good park
Great Adventure is closed January to April.
Fiesta Texas is the best Six Flags park. Then spend a day at Sea World San Antonio.
I was looking at the rides are they don't seem to stand out? I was planning on going on 19 th - they are open only from 5 pm -10 pm! Can I see anything within this short time frame?
In January? Unless it’s in New Years Day, your options will be severely limited by most of the Northern parks being closed for the season.

PROLOGUE (Coaster details in comments)
Let’s set the scene: Six Flags Great Adventure has been possibly the top of my bucket list for years. Why? Because in the early 2000s, when I was under 10yo and couldn’t ride big coasters yet, I opted instead to build them in Roller Coaster Tycoon and RCT2. I’m sure many of you see where this is going: the game contained a playable version of this park, and I can’t emphasize the amount of hours I watched Nitro, Medusa, Great American Scream Machine, and Rolling Thunder zoom around their courses. Some of those have passed on, but not without record-breaking replacements. I also visited Kentucky Kingdom in 2005, when I was first tall enough for B&M loopers, but I chickened out on Chang. Then it was moved way up here, further from my reach. So, 2 decades later, Green Lantern has also become sort of a “grudge” bucket list item.
I wanna get this elephant out of the room quickly: Great Adventure has seen a lot of valid criticism lately. I’ve read many unfortunate stories about people’s experiences this season, and I empathize. However, this is not one of those reviews, as I had an absolutely amazing first visit. I have compliments to hand out, and I hope everyone who believes in the park’s potential will appreciate this reprieve from the negatives. Not that the negatives aren’t warranted, as my experience was clearly an anomaly (and I had to pay for it), but I’m here to discuss the good and the better.
With my hefty bucket list and knowledge of the park’s operations in mind, I make an easy decision to buy a Flash Pass. It’s my first time ever buying a skip-the-line pass, and I get the middle tier. It ends up being so worth it, and I actually think they need better marketing for these. I’ll learn quickly, to my surprise, that Flash Pass comes with free midline lockers! I just rechecked the website after typing this, and I don’t see that perk listed anywhere. They’re very easy to use, they fit my fanny pack, and it’s a nice value add. These are even at Jersey Devil & Ka, and Toro has its new free lockers. I’ll barely wait for any ride I check into, only once for Jersey Devil (20ish minutes). By the end of the day, I’ll have 28 total coaster rides at my top bucket list park. This is my rave review of one of the best coaster collections in the world, and I rode every single one.
Head to the comments for my day in detail!
[1 of 4] There aren’t words to describe how it feels driving into Great Adventure for the first time. Seeing and hearing Kingda Ka from well outside the parking lot is electric, and as I wait for the parking lot to open, I simply marvel at the skyline in front of me. Being early gets me a great parking spot, and upon heading in not every coaster is open yet (no shocker there). From what is open, I start with what I know will have slow Ops all day due to its train design: my grudge credit, the stand-up coaster.
#164 Green Lantern: So, this ride has a rep and I mostly expect pain. However, with my height I can mostly avoid headbanging on the old B&M OTSRs by leaning forward. Standups make this a little harder, but it’s mostly a comfortable ride! With the right seat positioning, I like how the positives feel in my legs. I’ve only done 2 of the smallest standups (GA Scorcher & Vortex) and they’re so tame by comparison. This would’ve made a much bigger impact if it had been my first B&M at KK 20 years ago, but it’s still a pleasant surprise. Chang, consider yourself conquered.
Superman isn’t open yet, nor are Ka and Toro, and Frontiertown won’t open until 2. So I head to the center to knock out a couple bad capacity (and possibly just bad) rides with my Flash Pass: #165 Joker and #166 Skull Mountain. I hate, and I mean hate, freespins. I’m also a sick person who needs his credits, so I suffer through Joker. It’s not as bad as Fiesta’s, but rest assured, I still hate it. Skull Mountain isn’t remarkable; I like indoor coasters and it’s a good-sized family ride, but the inside is dull. My favorite moment is when the Lead Op loses his patience with some annoying kids (they’re trying to get in different rows than the ones they lined up for 🙄) and just starts reading them while on the mic. This isn’t the last Op today who’s sick of the BS, and I absolutely live; we could really stand to bring back public shaming as a society. Anyways, raptor time!
#167 Jersey Devil Coaster: The first place these free FP lockers are a godsend on an otherwise upcharge attraction. Jersey Devil is cool, albeit a bit tame compared to the prototype! I ride in the very back and get some good, mostly floater air on the camelback and small hills, as well as a little whip on the dive loop and turnaround. Nothing in league with WWGLC but it’s absolutely smoother.
#168 Nitro: I grab the back row, my usual favorite on hypers. Nitro does plenty of things well: I get pulled over the camelbacks, the first drop is great, sustained floater throughout, and the helix before the MCBR is the most forceful one on a B&M hyper besides Goliath’s at SFoG. It’s more rattly than Mako or Candymonium, but it’s also more intense. You can’t go wrong with this model, and Nitro soars.
#169 Batman the Ride: Since I’m nearby I go ahead and snag it, also in the back row. This is my 3rd clone after SFoG’s and Fiesta’s, and this is between them for me. Georgia’s is definitely superior; it’s so fast. But this one hauls compared to Goliath, which is missing the 8th row. It’s the best cloned model out there, as they’re all so powerful. As I exit and check my app, I notice a certain tallest coaster in the world is now open, so I reserve my FP and book it.
[2 of 4] #170 Kingda Ka: Here we go. I get to the Golden Kingdom and quickly make my way to the front row. I was scared hopping on an Intamin impulse yesterday, so imagine my boot-shaking here. It’s my first 100+mph coaster, and Formula Rossa has been down since January so I’m technically riding the tallest AND fastest coaster in the world. And what a rush it is: My eyes water. My cheeks escape my face. I drool involuntarily. It’s no longer the coaster which feels demented; it’s ME who is demented. Ka is a serendipitous, instantaneous and sustained whiplash of epic sensation. I absolutely adore it.
I grab lunch at the BBQ place near Jersey Devil for a quick breather. It’s better than a lot of Six Flags food I’ve had, and I also take the moment to have a couple cups of cold water. Hydrate, people! I bought a one-day dining pass; this made sense monetarily since I’m also a snack queen and this includes one. It’s now close to 2pm, and I see they’ve opened my soon to be #171: Runaway Mine Train early, so I head there. It’s one of the jankier Arrow mine trains, but there’s one ejector moment where I almost piss myself. If you’ve ridden it you know: that last hill over the water. I ride next to a small kid whose dad and brother are a row behind us and they’re apparently marathoning it. I do unfortunately almost kill the kid during a particularly strong helix - I probably should’ve been on the outside lol. But he lives to tell the tale, which I hear him excitedly recounting to his mom outside after we exit. “That guy almost crushed me, it was awesome!” Definitely a choice to ride this right after a big lunch, but I loved it.
#172 Harley Quinn Crazy Train: I did this for the credit (sick, remember I’m sick), but it’s a great kids’ ride! Smooth, and it cycles twice - well, except for the train before me where they stopped between cycles to kick off a guy who had his phone out 🤭 Thank you SFGAd for your commitment to publicly shaming those who deserve it.
Now for my last 2 B&Ms, #173 Superman: Ultimate Flight and #174 Medusa. Superman is better than I remember this clone being, but Georgia’s is superior with its terrain. Medusa, however, is AWESOME! My instant thought is that it could be the best floorless - how appropriate to perfect it the first time. Dominator may have the edge for its uniqueness, but this has so much intensity - the zero G roll and cobra roll specifically. The 90s B&Ms are so hard to compete with. But now it’s time for the icon, the legend, the actual main event.
[3 of 4] #175 El Toro: One of my most anticipated rides ever, and I’m apprehensive but excited. Is it still rough like I’ve heard? Will I derail? Will it live up to the hype? Well, no, no, and yes. I start with row 2, and in the station I immediately see ElToroRyan getting off the ride. How on brand. In a couple days, I’ll see myself in about 2 seconds of his video reviewing the new lockers (spoiler: they’re awesome). Also, Matt from Coaster Studios is the Lead Op, and he’s continuing the trend of Ops not dealing with the bullshit lol. Literally, there’s some slow walkers and he’s on the mic saying stuff like “the world won’t wait for you, neither will we!” Speaking of Ops, I’ve never been as impressed as I am by this entire crew. They literally run along the train to check lap bars. Thanks to them, I’ll ride 5 times in Rows 2, 14, 14, 17, and 2 again. The ejector on the 2 large camelbacks and the Rolling Thunder hill may be the 3 strongest airtime moments I’ve ever felt. The front adds a little more to these, but the back has way more sustained pull, especially on the first drop. Only 2 spots I’d call a little bumpy: the turnaround after the giant camelbacks and an S hill near the end. However, me not doing wheel seats helps. I’ll be back later today for more, but for now here’s a quote from my initial notes after my Row 17 ride: “JFC maybe the best thing ever, it may beat Iron Gwazi.”
I’ve got one more credit to snag with #176 Dark Knight, but before heading that way, I take my second ride on Ka, this time in the very back. It’s just as demented as the front albeit shakier, but the shake doesn’t bother me as I’m too preoccupied being teleported to Mars. I trek over to Dark Knight and find it better than the other Mack wild mice, but still unremarkable. Being indoor is nice.
With credit counting done and while I’m over here, I grab rerides on Nitro and Jersey Devil. This is when JD has the 20min wait with FP and Nitro’s regular line is 15min, so I start the clock for my JD wait and hit Nitro. This time I do Row 2 which is good, but I still prefer the back. When I exit it’s perfect timing for JD so I head there; I do the back again, this time Row 11. I wanted the front but there was a party right behind me waiting for it so no big deal. Probably the weakest RMC for me, but a solid ride.
If you’re counting, I’ve now had 20 coaster rides - already more than I’ve ever gotten in one day, b/c I can’t marathon like some of y’all lol. It’s shortly after 6pm with a 7pm closing time, and I think to myself “How nice would it be to hit 25?” Thus I head back over to Intaminland and get my 3rd and final ride on Ka. I’ve already praised the Toro Ops but the Ka crew is also killing it - they know people’s time is money and they act accordingly! Getting 3 rides on this darling almost makes up for the zero rides I’ll get on Top Thrill 2 in 3 days. Almost. From here, my plan is to marathon El Toro 4 more times in 30ish minutes to hit my goal of 25 rides. That’s possible, right?
I'm glad you had a great day at one of my home parks! When this place is relatively empty and running at full speed, it's one of the best places to be, and imo that happens more often than you'd be led to believe on this sub. This park can't handle crowds like it used to though. The lineup definitely falls off a little after the top 5-6, I feel content here spamming Nitro and the Intamins with a ride or two on some of the B&Ms, JDC, and the mine train.
I agree. I liked the B&Ms more than I expected to! Just having ridden so many now I never get too excited for them. But they’re solid
Such a great report and I’m glad you got on both El Toro and Kingda Ka! This is my home park, but I’ve been avoiding it because operations were bad for the season thus far. Both of those two coasters have been closed a decent amount this season. It sounds like management is finally getting their shit together. I’m always delighted to hear people enjoying Medusa too, since she was my introduction to the hobby
I definitely was lucky! My original plan was to go the day before (when I ended up at Dorney and rode everything in the rain) but I swapped for the weather, since every report I could find indicated Ka closes immediately for any rain. And it did end up being closed that day I originally was gonna go. Staying flexible helped me make the most of it!
It's so funny reading reviews of your home park as if they are some Mecca of amusement parks when to us it's just our local place to ride rides lol. That roar of Kingda though definitely sets the mood immediately.
I’m jealous of your home park!
the faded supports on an unopened coaster are so on brand
Inspired by a post in /r/geography. When you’re driving to a park, and it suddenly comes into view. Which one is your favorite?
I have to say Six Flags Great America. Ive never been to the park, but I’ve driven past it several times. When you cross the border into Illinois going south from Wisconsin, all of a sudden Raging Bull is RIGHT THERE.
Cedar point and it’s not even close
Cedar Point is the undisputed winner in my book
That being said, its Ohio sibling Kings Island is pretty awesome too
kings island cracks me up because banshee, diamondback, and orion’s lift hills are all oriented in the same direction, and those are the only three prominent coasters you can see on the skyline. you never notice it in the park but from the highway it looks like a copy pasted photoshop.
I think part of what makes this one so great is the fact that you can't really see much of the park from Sandusky besides maybe TT2 and Millennium force through the trees, and then suddenly you drive through the causeway and see this city of roller coasters appear in front of you and you think "holy crap, Im gonna ride all of it"
100% cedar point, not even close.
Besides that, coming south down I5 to SFMM you get a glimpse of the observation tower, round the corner and BAM and entire hillside of coasters right there, pretty solid
I live west of SFMM, so anytime we'd drive on the 126 towards Santa Clarita, we'd get that same view of the observation tower peeking over the hills followed by the eventual explosion of coasters just before you reach I-5. Always a sweet view!
Holiday World
It’s great when you’re just driving through a cornfield that has looked the same for miles and then all of a sudden a park appears like an oasis in the desert.
I thought I was going to be slick and say this. But yeah after miles and miles of cornfields, you come up over slight hill and peeping out right between the hills on both sides is the flags waving on top of the voyage.
I love when a ride has lil flags at the top
driving on the causeway and seeing it in the distance is awesome, but cedar point also does the actual reveal really well.
as you drive through sandusky, you can’t really see any of the park. then the highest structures start to poke over trees, then you turn onto the causeway and the whole thing is suddenly visible, floating out in the middle of the lake.
not even on purpose, it’s a disney/universal style icon reveal.
I can give you a top four and why I feel this why but I couldn’t put them in any particular order.
SFGA. I work at this park for fright fest and when taking that left turn off the free way heading to the employee parking, seeing the drop tower, and raging bull, and maxx force dominate the skyline is just such a cool image to see. Likewise driving in from the other direction and driving by the mess of wood that is American Eagle especially at night when it’s all lit up is unmatched.
Canada’s Wonderland. This seemingly comes out of nowhere. Driving driving driving and then BOOM Wonder Mountain with the drop tower shows up. Wonder mountain is such a rare and unique skyline experience as the only real mess of coast track visible beyond it being Behemoth and Leviathan (unsure if Yukon Striker changes this I haven’t been there to see it).
Kings Island. Mostly flat lands around it you can see the blue eifel tower for near miles on the free way coming in. It’s gorgeous and Diamondback and Orion really add to that hype.
Cedar Point. Cedar Point is definitely a clear number one and it’s not even close. As soon as you get on that bridge to the Cedar Point peninsula all it does is drum up hype as its several coasters dominate the skyline along the lake. Top thrill, gatekeeper, raptor, magnum, millenium all just out there for you to see as you drive up. The way Steel Vengeance is cleverly tucked away too is just impressive. You get on that bridge and just know you are in for a wonderful day at the park. Unbeatable.
There's also something incredible about pulling into wonderlands parking lot and seeing leviathan just dwarf the whole area. I was so in awe just looking at the massive structure as we were getting our tickets ready
When Superman and Batwing are running, the park can be a lot of fun. When they’re both down, which I’ve also experienced, hooo boy.
It really doesn’t have a good supporting lineup, and aside from rides, there isn’t much else to do in the park. It’s super sad because I think this park has a ton of potential
If they made a big investment in family rides, this park could be extremely successful. SFA is the closest major park to me, but I take my family an extra 45 minutes to KD because the Planet Snoopy section, shade, and charm are so much better. With all the people in the DMV, heavy tourism, and Six Flags supposed focus on families, it’s absurd that this park remains forgotten to Six Flags corporate.
Would be such a tragedy if Roar burnt down. Such an iconic coster I would be crying for days. All tears of joy I assure you.
But in all honesty Super Man and Batwing are good, I am also rather fond of Wild One it’s a solid woodie. Joker is fine even if it is just an outside flight of fear but otherwise that park makes me very sad.
Really wish they would give it some love, but I guess they don’t want to get into an arms race with Hershey, KD or Bush Gardens. But at that point why even keep the park open?
Am interesting statement from the person who called it the best theme park in the world.
April Fool’s! This park is honestly pretty bad. It’s probably the worst theme park I’ve ever been to, but I’ve only been to a dozen or so. It looks like your typical Six Flags park—some parts are actually pretty nice, but the rest is pretty bland and not well taken care of.
Operations here were not great. Superman was down, which I can understand because they announced it at the beginning of the day, but Batwing was also down for the entire time I was there, which was super disappointing. Random rides kept breaking down throughout the day as well. Staff here was mostly decent, but there were also a few who were pretty rude. To be fair to them, guests sometimes acted out of line, but the way they handled it was not professional and honestly would’ve gotten them fired at a Disney park. Food operations were abysmally slow, and the food was mediocre and overpriced.
The coasters that were open were all running one train and dispatch times were pretty average, with the exception of Ragin Cajun, which I thought was operating pretty quickly. Without their top two coasters, the coaster lineup here is super weak, there is a lack of both quality and quantity. I will review these individually in the next section. The flat ride collection is not bad, I actually enjoyed the flat rides. Harley Quinn Spinsanity was my clear favorite, you get some really good airtime. For families, there isn’t much to do here. There is a small kids area, but that’s about it. I saw mostly teens at this park, which I suppose is typical. Very different from my experiences at KD or BGW.
Here are my in-depth coaster reviews:
Firebird (x1 front, x1 back): Headbanging, the ride. This ride literally plays ping pong with your ears, no matter where you sit. However, it is worse in the front, so if you are going to ride this, sit in the back row. There are actually a few good elements, I thought the corkscrew was powerful and there was one snappy turn. The fire effect was also working today, which was kinda cool. The rest of the ride is pretty meh, there are lots of dead spots and the pacing is bad. I came off this ride with a massive headache the second time I rode it, so I am not a fan.
Joker’s Jinx (x2 front, x1 back): This is a good launch coaster. The launch itself is just ok, and I find that the first half meanders around a lot. However, the second half absolutely hauls and those elements are super forceful. I especially love the corkscrew at the end, it’s so good. This was my favorite ride in the park.
Roar (x1 front, x1 back): This ride isn’t that bad, but it’s also not that good. Just as everyone says, it’s pretty rough, although I didn’t find it unbearably rough. There are some good lateral forces, but basically no airtime. I didn’t hate it, but an RMC conversion of this would give SFA a truly elite coaster.
Wild One (x1 back, x1 second row): This ride taught me the importance of not sitting in a wheel seat. My first ride was in the very back row and I found it unbearably rough, I really could not enjoy the coaster. However, a little voice in my head whispered “remember, wheel seats are bad,” so I decided to give it another shot. My second ride was on a non-wheel seat and it was sooooo much smoother. I don’t think this ride is an airtime machine, but it has a little bit of airtime. My favorite part of the ride was actually the laterals, you get some really strong ones. This ride is fine as a family woodie, but I didn’t find it super enjoyable.
Ragin’ Cajun (x1): I thought this was just gonna be a slightly better wild mouse, but holy moly, this thing was crazy. The first half of the ride was pretty uneventful, it’s just a typical wild mouse. The second half however, spins you like crazy and it is so fun. I was uncontrollably laughing the entire time because I was having so much fun, it was GREAT! I had a car all to myself, so maybe that’s why I got so much spinning, although I saw other cars going pretty wild too. It was definitely my second favorite ride today.
Bourbon Street Fireball (x1): I don’t know if anyone counts this a credit, but I went on it anyway. It’s a fun ride, don’t understand all the hate these Larson Loops get. The restraints are great, not oppressive like the ones on Tidal Twister. You get some great hangtime too.
As mentioned before, Superman and Batwing were both closed, as well as Great Chase (rip kiddie credit). Mind Eraser is confirmed to be SBNO. Good riddance!
Ragin' Cajun is fantastic. My favorite ride at SFA
Opening day is always bad with ride breakdowns and the early season is always really bad for ops. It was like that last year too, although at least Superman, Batwing, and Mind Eraser were all open. Superman is very sensitive to temperature/wind and it's getting up there in age, plus the trains are in dire need of replacement. I really hope this new GM sticks around because he seems to have some good ideas for the park. I only ever got one ride on Firebird with the fire effect in operation and that was the year it opened. SFA really has a lot of potential and it's my home Six Flags park (even though I live 3 hours away) so I hope it gets some attention in the near future.
I hope so too. It would so cool to have 3 great parks competing in the DMV area, we would all benefit from it
Lol, sorry to let you down man. I still had some fun, but my overall experience was not good. I really think this park has the potential to do well given its location, but Six Flags needs to invest in it more.
Roar is the best part of Six Flags America.
Yesterday, I made my first visit of the season to Six Flags America. Living in southern Maryland my whole life, I grew up visiting this park as a kid during the Adventure World days. However, over the years, especially in the mid 2000's, park quality was going downhill and we stopped going here for a while. Kings Dominion ended up being my home park as I would visit it and be a frequent season pass holder since 2010. Since then this would be my third visit to the park. After the merger, I ended up getting the All Park Passport with my KD season pass as it would give me access to both parks for free. Honestly, I thought it was worth it. Just a shame this will be last season for this park. It's far from perfect but it improved so much in the last 20 years.
Positive notes:
-One thing I've always admired was how nice the front entrance is. A nice little midway with gift shops and places to eat. It has a nice charm to it.
-Employees were great and despite school groups and one train operations on most coasters, I don't think I had to wait more than 10 minutes for anything. One of the cashiers in the gift shop at the front of the park was very outgoing and helpful.
-The park definitely seems to much cleaner than what it used be to years ago.
The only negative is what I previously mentioned were the one train operations. I'm glad ride ops were doing there best to get trains out as fast as possible, but two trains would have helped tremendously. If the coasters had two trains operating, I guarantee they would've been one train waits to walk ons.
As far as the coasters:
Roar - My second big roller coaster I ever went on when it opened in 1998. It's definitely a rough one but still has some great moments. The first drop in the last car packs a punch. The layout itself is fun but it has not aged well.
Joker's Jinx - As a frequent Kings Dominion visitor, I can say that this ride is way better than Flight of Fear. FOF has great theming, but JJ is much faster, more intense and much smoother. I don't have high hopes of it being relocated at the end of the year, so I suggest getting rides on it as much as possible before it's gone.
Superman - Easily the best coaster in the park. Great first drop, nice moments of airtime, smooth and the helices are a lot of fun. Another one I don't have high hopes on a relocation. This one is gonna hurt when it's gone.
Wild One - While this has also shown it's age, this is still one of my favorite woodies. Nice airtime, relentless and has a great out and back layout. The helix is also very forceful.
Professor Screamore's SkyWinder - New trains can't save this ride. I did used love riding this when I was younger when it was Mind Eraser but now that I'm older, it's just not as enjoyable anymore. Which is a shame because it has some intense moments but the roughness takes it away.
I didn't ride Firebird as it seemed to have the longest wait with one train and I remember it being horrible when I rode it a few years ago. Batwing is still down, and Ragin' Cajun as spinning rides give me motion sickness. Only other ride I went on was Renegade Rapids as it was a pretty hot day out, which helped me cool off. Nice little rapids ride.
Overall, it was a pretty good day for being there for a few hours. I plan on going back at least one or two more times for the summer and check out Hurricane Harbor. I also plan on checking out their Fright Fest as it will be there last one and my last chance to get night rides on everything. If you happen to be in the area, stop by and visit the park while you still can.
As a local, I've always loved the Batwing for it's uniqueness, but those downtimes are pretty bad
Thank you for sharing! I'm trying to find some time to get out there this summer, as I've never been there despite being only 4-5 hours away by car. I'm also not very hopeful that any of those coasters get relocated honestly, and I've wanted to get on Wild One since I was a child, as I had a roller coaster book that had Paragon Park's Giant Coaster featured prominently on a page.
Kind of a shame about the one train operations, but it sounds like you had a pretty good day otherwise!
Definitely try to make it out there if you can. Superman, Joker's Jinx and Wild One are worth checking out. And if you have the time and money, Kings Dominion is less than two hours away.
It seems most people have the opposite option of Roar and SkyWinder as you do: that Roar is too rough to be enjoyable and SkyWinder is rough, but has good moments.
The history of Six Flags America up through its closing has been a shame. I guess competition with King's Dominion, BGW, and Hershey Park doomed it once they couldn't keep up proper investment in the park.
As a child, my parents took me to King's Dominion, because Six Flags gained a reputation for being "dangerous". I think this was a combination of the rides breaking down frequently and there were fights in the park from time to time
I remember visting King's Dominion as a child back in 2015. I'm not sure when I can visit Virginia again, but if I do then I'll definitely try to visit King's Dominion again.
SkyWinder did have some good moments which caught me by surprise. I just wish it was a bit smoother.
And yeah, that's one of the reasons why we stopped going to Six Flags around 2007. The amount of fights and obnoxious teenagers drove my friends and family away. Which is a real shame because the Adventure World days and first couple years of Six Flags was trouble free. We visited Kings Dominion quite a few times before, but not as often as it was further and costed more but decided to go there more often afterwards. I ended up getting my license in 2009, then Intimidator opened the next year and it became my go to park ever since.
Yeah I found Skywinder better than roar honestly, i didn’t find it particularly rough at all, roar on the other hand was just a piece of shit lmao
Yeah Roar does absolutely nothing for me. Incredibly boring and rough
I stopped by on Wednesday and was super impressed by how well Wild One was running. There's a decent amount of new wood on it and you can tell it's been pretty well maintained. It's heartbreaking that we're about to lose this beautiful classic woodie but I'm at least thankful I got a bunch of fantastic rides before it closes. I was pleasantly surprised that they were running two trains on it even though crowds were low and the second train went out empty a couple of times. We were able to stay on for re-rides which was much appreciated. Roar could use some work but I enjoyed my ride and have always liked the layout, especially that one dramatic over banked turn towards the end. Unfortunately after that the heat really got to me (shade being a foreign concept in this park didn't help) which meant a shorter visit than I would have liked but we're already talking about going back for closing day or at least later in the season for one last goodbye. I'll echo your recommendation that everyone who's able to make it to the park do so this year while it's still around.
Superman's lift hill looks so tall and high up. It looks a little smaller in the first picture where you stand further from it but taller in the seventh picture where you stand close enough.
Really neat park with a solid ride lineup! Definitely lacking in terms of theming/ landscaping, especially compared to Fiesta Texas. Also, I believe there should have been more shade, as it was extremely hot outside (as per usual in this state). My favorite coaster at the park was Mr. Freeze. I got to ride it both forward and backwards. That initial launch and inverted top hat are such an adrenaline rush. The ride was surprisingly smooth too. Easily one of my favorite coasters in Texas. My second favorite of the day was New Texas Giant. Also super smooth and full of great airtime. Exactly what you’d expect from an RMC coaster. The Superman drop tower had some great views and even some decent airtime. Definitely greyed out on Shockwave and Titan, but I still enjoyed them. If you come on a weekend, getting a Flash Pass is a wise move if you want to ride everything. It was nice to visit a Six Flags park on a day when almost everything was open. Overall, I really enjoyed my trip, and I highly recommend checking this place out, especially for Mr. Freeze!
Felt on the higher end of the quality spectrum for six flags parks! Things were themed well, rides were solid, atmosphere was good, and themed lands were pretty decent!
Also I love the tie ins to texas culture everywhere. I think it’s solid and a B&M dive would be a solid next addition. I also love that Titan can be seen from Globe life park where the texas ranger play. I went to a game there and could watch titans drop off the lift hill from my upper deck seasons. The new titan color scheme in texas rangers colors looks great and ties in better with the team
I feel like this park needs more love and to be more similar to Cedar Point as this was the Six Flags starting park. Titan, New Texas Giant, and Mr Freeze are all great rides. I wish this park had more unique rides like Judge Roy Scream etc.
In terms of thrill coasters I agree but in terms of family coasters and flat/dark rides, they have some unique ones. Runaway Mountain, Runaway Mine Train, El Asseraderro, Oil Derrick, Pirates of Speelunker Cave, Aquaman Power Wave and Dino Off-Road Adventure (tho I think there’s one clone within the chain of that one). I thought these plus the theming and big flat rides added some extra charm to the park but I get the disappointment if all you care about is thrill coasters.
I’d agree with this. I was saying that the overall park isn’t as cohesive as other parks. The fact that SFFT is better when this is supposed to be the flagship park says something.
I didn’t get to ride it in reverse earlier this month but it’s definitely up there. I also didn’t think it was uber smooth. I think titan was my big winner for the park. You can tell Texas giant was the original rmc.
Also a solid Shock wave time.
Also would love to see more of aquamans in the chain.
So grateful for this to be my home park. It's such an underrated Six Flags location compared to the giants like Magic Mountain or Great America. Shockwave and Mr. Freeze are fantastic rides that both hold up well despite their age.
>Mr. Freeze are fantastic rides that both hold up well despite their age.
Mr. Freeze opened in 1998 lol
I mean, that's more than 25 years ago, and the first-gen Premier LIM coasters had a lot of issues.
I get what you mean, but parks have torn down newer coasters for worse reasons.
That is starting to become old for a steel coaster
Reverse was open!?!?! Must of been terrifying on the spike
Honestly I found OG Freeze scarier. Going up the spike facing forward was much, much more frightening than backwards.
Oh it is for sure, no doubt here
We sporadically added Lost Island to our plans as it was only an extra 2hrs drive!
Adventureland started interesting, as they had us do a figure 8 queue around the park entrance to get in. Odd, but whatever! Park is very funfair esque at the front but really pretty at the back with trees and the river. Both woodies were fun but a bit rough. Lots of hangtime on monster. Very fun first drop with the lap bars! 4D coaster wild as always. I didn't quite understand the underground and then it just ended lol
Lost Island on the other hand is a really cute and fun park. I could spend a lot of time at this place and it has a lot of potential. I'm not sure how financially viable it is, as it's literally in the middle of nowhere and a ride op told me it's always super quiet. I guess they many money from the water park!
SLC was awful, as expected. Highly enjoyed the Intamin launch, super whippy and fun and the RMC with the long trains is fantastic. Absolutely wild in front and back. And the dark ride is a lot of fun too! Oh and I finally managed to flip upside down on the Sky Fly flat!

Lost Island is the most surreal park I’ve ever been to. Everything is empty. You think half of the rides are closed, but then they open the door for you, and you’re the only one on the entire ride.
I rode Fire Runner for nine consecutive ride cycles until it closed at 9:30.
I'm thrilled to see they've added some SHADE structures over some of the queues! Sheesh!
There was no Lost Island back when I trekked across those plains in 2019, but I enjoyed Adventureland a lot. Monster is elite.
This trip is massive! And I see you’re swinging north to try our best coaster of 2025 up here at Wonderland. See ya soon.
Yep it's a mid West tour with some favourites sprinkled in. I had to add in wonderland after I saw how good Alpenfury looked!
Welp, it's actually parks 12 and 13
Discuss.
Well, X2 is my favorite coaster overall, so this is kind of an easy answer for me.
Considering it’s included in my flair, I don’t disagree that it’s amazing. I do prefer Toro, but incredibly slightly.
Batman or Goliath
That's like half the rides at the parks!
That I’ve ridden: Iron Rattler
Overall? Probably Toro
El Toro
El Toro for woodies and Superman in New England for steel coasters
I visited Great America for the first time in 5 years and it did not disappoint. Lines were short and most of the rides were better than I remember.
We got to the park around 10:20, and got into the park a few minutes before opening. Past the crowd that Maxx Force brings at opening, we got our first rides.
Raging Bull x2 8.5/10
A lot better than I remember. I prefer the front over the back because you can still feel some of the airtime and it’s a lot more intense up front. Either way, a hyper that’s critically slept on and should be looked as a top class hyper.
Before Trip (out of 86): #18
After Trip(out of 88): #16
After our 2 Rides on Raging Bull, we headed to its next door neighbor
Viper x2 7/10
Rode towards the front the first time and came back for the back a little later. This cyclone mirror image is an underrated wooden gem and needs more love.
Before Trip: #37
After Trip: #31
We decided to just stop by the big rides nearby for the next little bit.
Demon x1 6/10
Actually not terrible! The double corkscrew and the helixes are not great but overall it’s fine!
X Flight x1 7.5/10
Better than I remember, a very intense wing coaster with some great headchoppers. Did go down on my list because of Raging Bull, but it doesn’t take away from the amazingness.
Before Trip: #16
After Trip: #17
one shameless search for DC universe later
Goliath x2 9.2/10
BEST PITSTOP EVER! We rode Goliath on our way to DC universe and I was blown away yet again. An aggressive ride that packs such a punch for its small size.
Before Trip: #10
After Trip: #10
Little Dipper x1 5.5/10
A fun little ride that provides a good experience for the whole family
Ight my phone boutta blow up so the rest is in the comments
Love this park!!
Same! It’s awesome!
packs such a punch for its small size
Isn’t it one of the tallest wooden coasters on earth
I meant length wise
Why didn't you ride American Eagle?
Eagle ain’t that much without dueling. Plus it’s tough and boring
No its not. It's easily top 5 there. I have it in my top 3 there.
But its got wild airtime. But it is indeed tough since its still standing after 43 years.
I can feel that blazing blacktop now
We finally made it to DC Universe and got straight to work
Flash: Vertical Velocity x1 6.5/10
Punchy launch but it’s just meh after that. Not much else to say
Before Trip: 41
After Trip: 42
Batman: The Ride x1 6.8/10
Ride itself is a lot more intense and snappy than it remember. Fun, but GAWDAM can we please get air conditioning in the queue?
After a reride on Viper, we headed over to the big gun
Maxx Force x1 9/10
WONT’CHA FLYYYYYYY HIIIIIIGH FREEEEEE BIIIIIIIIRD! That launch is STILL incredible and the ride is incredible as well. YEAHHH!!!
Before Trip: #15
After Trip: #15
And then….
Whizzer x1 6/10
I love the low to the ground parts and the wonkiness of it! A fun classic!
After that, we got our reride on Goliath and took the train back to hometown square to end our day. A fun day at the park and no lines for most of the day helped.
Best Six Flags park to visit
Key Considerations for Choosing a Six Flags Park:
Location: Consider the proximity of the park to your home or travel destination. Some parks are easier to access than others.
Rides and Attractions: Different parks have unique rides and attractions. If you're a thrill-seeker, look for parks known for their roller coasters, like Six Flags Magic Mountain in California, which boasts the most coasters in the chain.
Family-Friendly Options: If you're visiting with family, consider parks that offer a good mix of rides for all ages. Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey has a variety of attractions suitable for younger children and families.
Seasonal Events: Check if the park hosts seasonal events, such as Halloween Fright Fest or Holiday in the Park, which can enhance your visit.
Amenities and Services: Look for parks with good amenities, such as dining options, guest services, and cleanliness, to ensure a pleasant experience.
Recommendations:
Six Flags Magic Mountain (California): Best for thrill-seekers with a wide variety of coasters, including Twisted Colossus and X2.
Six Flags Great Adventure (New Jersey): Offers a mix of thrilling rides and family-friendly attractions, plus the added bonus of a safari experience.
Six Flags Over Texas (Arlington): The original Six Flags park, known for its rich history and a good balance of rides for all ages.
Ultimately, the best park for you will depend on your preferences for rides, location, and the type of experience you're seeking!
