TL;DR
Importance of Fit
The most emphasized advice across discussions is the importance of finding a mask that fits your face well. A good fit ensures comfort and prevents leaks, which can significantly affect your snorkeling experience [1:1],
[2:1],
[3:1]. It is often recommended to visit a dive shop to try on different masks or order several online and return those that do not fit
[3:1].
Recommended Brands and Models
Several brands are frequently recommended for their quality and reliability. Cressi is a popular choice, with models like the Cressi F1 and Cressi Palau mentioned positively [1:4],
[5:5]. Tusa is another brand that receives praise, particularly for its Freedom series masks and Solla fins
[2:2]. The Atomic Aquatics Frameless 2 mask is noted for its excellent fit and comfort
[2:3].
Snorkel Features
For snorkels, simplicity is key. Many users prefer simple J-shaped snorkels without purge valves, as they are less prone to failure [4:2],
[4:8]. However, some recommend snorkels with purge valves for rougher conditions, as they can help keep water out
[4:1],
[4:4].
Avoid Full-Face Masks
Full-face masks are generally advised against due to potential safety risks, such as CO2 buildup, which can be dangerous [5:6]. Traditional masks and snorkels are recommended instead, as they offer better safety and performance.
Additional Tips
To prevent fogging, it is suggested to clean new masks with toothpaste or burn off the factory coating using a lighter [5:2],
[5:7]. This helps remove any residual manufacturing coatings that can cause fogging.
In conclusion, while there are many options available, the best snorkel and snorkeling gear ultimately depend on personal fit and comfort. Prioritize trying different options to find what works best for you.
Hello all, long time lurker, first time poster.
I snorkel quite a bit, deep snorkel diving, fast swimming, confident in all conditions. I know these details are probably irrelevant, but I'm just looking for a mask that is better than my current Cressi duel lens….up my game I guess. I head to Indonesia in a month…really looking to get some serious usage out of it. (note: I dont dive, just enough the freedom having nothing on me but a mask)
Ideally, I'm looking for a single lens, maybe black, with large vision. Is a Cressi F1 good enough? We are short on dive shops where I am here, so it might be tough testing out masks. I have a pretty average shaped face. Face stubble on my face is usually my only issue with leakage.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
The one that fits well and doesn’t leak. Brand and cost aside. Everyone has a different fit so there isn’t one for everyone. Best is subjective
This..but I can suggest a psi vera for large face - what I have and is awesome, and a aqualung nabul for narrow face...both great prices..just burn em when you buy em to remove silicone on glass
Does psi vera only sell out of Bangkok? Well known brand?
Yes, I can’t emphasize this enough when I say, I get it, am aware of this. My current one slowly leaks. Have maybe 20-30 minutes out until I have to repeatedly do underwater blow-outs. I am no where near a water body…I can’t just go out and test them. Also, in store, they all seem to fit “good enough. Hence focusing on quality in this question.
I have a Cressi F1 as my back-up mask for diving. I can vouch that if it fits your face, it's good for at least 30 metres. And cheap as chips - think mine was £30 (around $40)
Yeah, this it the mask I’m going to try out in the next few days. Thanks
I have an oceanic Titan, its twin lens but it fits me nicely and I can wear it 3-4 hours without soreness. But like others have said, the best mask is the one that fits your head shape the best
I can't stress enough the need to go to a dive shop and find the mask that fits your face. Anything in that $100 price point should be good, but you truly need to try them out. I tried a few different masks, some from the same maker, before I found the mask that fit my face/that I could get it to stay on just by inhaling from my nose. Didn't really leak, even with a mustache. Or order a few and return the ones that don't work.
I did this in the past, and every single one felt the same regarding “fit”. They all seemed to seal. Hard to know though in a store. Hard to truly know a leak fit without actually using one for an extended time. So right now, I’m just wondering what people out there think is a good quality mask.
Cressi duel lens is a very fine duel lens. I would keep it.
Noob here. What are the top 3 best kits for snorkeling? Money is not an issue. I hate shopping, I want to buy something of great quality that will last long.
Thank you in advanced.
You’re gonna get the “go to a store and try stuff on - the best kit is the one that fits you best” response.
I’m hoping that won’t be the case…. Any brands and models you recommend?
My favorite: Tusa. I also have stuff from cressi. Does it well since years
Mask: Tusa freedom series. Try the HD model Fins: my fav -Tusa Solla. I also have the OG atomic fins, but like the power of solla more.
Snorkel: any Tusa with soft bottom. I'm using one from cressi (ultra), but I think the tusa one is more comfortable in the mouth.
Anti fog stick from decathlon. Clean the glass with soap, dry. Apply stick. Dry. Add some water and rinse lightly before put it on. No fog for hours
Learn how to use your fins properly without bicycling. Learn how to remove water from the mask with one hand. Learn to blow the snorkel free and you're good.

After fighting with the mask, go to the dive shop and upgrade it. After getting tired of flapping about with the fins, go to the dive shop and upgrade them. The snorkel will probably be fine, although it lacks a quick release from the mask.
As others have said, it’s a very individual issue. I have had many masks over the years and replaced them for different reasons, none of which were lack of quality. My face is a little narrow, but not super narrow, so finding the right fit was difficult.
A few years ago I settled on an Atomic Aquatics Frameless 2 (at a dive shop) and loved it. Finally a mask that didn’t leak! I also got a Fourth Element snorkel at the same time and it’s definitely the best snorkel I’ve ever used.
Last year my mask sadly got a teeny tiny little tear on the inner skirt which resulted in salt water pouring into my eyeball. Do not recommend. So I ordered the exact same mask and it didn’t fit the same way! Thus began my online search for “the right one” because I honestly didn’t have time to go to a dive shop in my area. After a few incorrect purchases, I ended up with a Fourth Element Seeker and I love it so much. I was able to send a couple of the other masks back for refunds.
MASK FIT IS NOT THE SAME FOR EVERYONE NO MATTER THE QUALITY. The brand on the mask doesn’t mean anything if it doesn’t fit. And proper defogging is key for the same reason.
For fins, when I was scuba diving I had full length Cressi fins with the adjustable heel strap and had no issues. I currently use Cressi full foot short fins because they fit in a suitcase. If I wasn’t such a strong swimmer, I would be more comfortable in my scuba fins.
Definitely learn to kick correctly. For snorkeling that is usually very slow and mild swing at the hip with minimal splash or knee bend (strong currents may require more effort but it’s also no fun to snorkel in strong currents or rough water). It also doesn’t hurt to learn a proper frog kick as well in case you end up in very shallow water or start scuba cave diving!
Unless you’re the luckiest person alive, no one kit will fit you.
Good luck!
Thanks a lot!
Got my kit (Cressi) from Amazon for $50 at least 10 years ago and it’s still great. Hubby has been through two $100+ masks purchased from dive shops and still isn’t happy.
Go to a dive shop, find a mask that fits and try both clear and black skirts. My son likes clear, I like black, it’s just preference. Snorkel really isn’t that important, just depends on what features and name you want on it. Fins is an entire book.
Avoid a kit. The probability of somebody picking a mask, snorkel, and fins that all work the best for you, putting them in a nice package, and mass selling them is pretty slim.
Its unfortunately not a one size fits all thing. You'll need to try it at a store to know if it will fit your face. Otherwise, you can buy a bunch of different options and trial. Brands like cressi, oceanic, oceanways, scubapro are all quality, but not all will fit your face. Working with a professional store will be best if you want to buy something youll be happy with.
That seems to have the highest ratings of anything on Amazon. What do you consider the best brand snorkeling mask?
The one that fits my face is typically the best.
The reviews of other people's success doesn't mean much if it's constantly flooding on my weird shaped melon.
So does that mean you refuse to purchase one online? You have to try them on before you buy?
Absolutely, 9/10 masks won't fit you very well, always try it on in a dive shop before you buy.
You're going to get a lot of people telling you to go to a local shop, and they're not wrong. But another alternative is to order several masks from Amazon, pick one, and return the others.
To answer your question, though, a medium-sized low-volume frameless mask like the Hollis M1 will fit a lot of people. Not everybody, though, and you won't know which group you fall in until you try it preferably under water.
I like the look of Hollis M1 but I want a soft cushion strap instead of the rubber straps. Can I switch these out?
You have two options - you can put a cover over the existing silicone strap, or you can replace it with a "slap strap." I prefer the latter, but not all masks are compatible.
What's the best snorkel for spearfishing/freediving
I personally like the Omer zoom or Mares dual snorkel. Simple J snorkels with no stupid valves and have comfortable mouth pieces
No valves?
Some snorkels have purge valves
Is the omer zoom also silicone and bendy
There are two versions of the zoom, the more expensive one is all silicone and is bendy
I have the Riffe stable snorkel and love it. I swore off purge valves for a long time, but this one seems to be well designed, is extremely comfortable, and all the parts on it are user replaceable (and affordable), so if the purge valve does go out, you’re not boned.
I think the the J tube vs purge value is more circumstantial rather than a preference thing.
When I dive on the coast its normally in shallow water, 3-10m deep and requires a lot of weight which sits you very low in the water on the surface, using a weight vest only exacerbates the problem. When doing a breath up it only takes a little bit of chop and youre getting water down your snorkel which is anything but relaxing. Purge valves completely alleviate the problem.
The float valves at the top however I would definately avoid.
So for shallow water what would you recommend
If it's choppy, anything with a purge valve, especially if your doing a lot of surface finning or heavily weighted.
Most snorkels on the market are just rebranded versions of the same model. I'm using a cressi corfu at the moment, does the job, if its really rough I'll stick the tube off a cressi corsica on it which makes it a couple of inches longer.
I completely agree. If the purge valve allows you to have a more relaxed breathe up why wouldn't you want it? I Never understood why everyone says don't try it.
Mako has good ones. Any one works really, like most people say, the simpler the better.
I'll be going to Big Island, Hawaii for the coming holidays. Was wondering which type of snorkeling set is better. I've seen the following two different ones (one from decathalon and one from cresis):
https://www.amazon.com/Cressi-Palau-Mask-Snorkel-Snorkeling/dp/B003S9N8H2?th=1&psc=1

The decathalon one has Easybreath full face mask and the cresis one has a different style. Since it would be my first time would like to know if these are good for beginners or there are others which are better.
i'd go with the cressi set
And when you do, get some toothpaste, (not gel, not with baking soda) and gently rub a dime sized amount on a dry mask with clean fingers. You only need to rub the glass part. If your mask is plastic--DO NOT do this.
Rinse off, being sure to get the toothpaste near the edges. Dry with a soft cloth. You may want to repeat this.
The reason for this is a coating they apply in the factory. If you don't get it off as above, your mask will fog up like crazy. Can't tell you the number of people with new masks I have seen complaining that they couldn't see anything. The boats I go out in always carried toothpaste for that very reason!
A lighter works really well! I burn all my factory coats off it’s so much easier imo.
I'll echo what the others have said, do not go with a full face mask. Definitely use standard snorkle goggles and snorkle.
I went to Hawaii last year and brought my own gear. I had goggles and a snorkle laying around, so I ordered a pair of Cressi fins from Amazon. The ones that I bought are easily twice as long as the ones in the Cressi set, which I really enjoyed because I was able to freedive to deeper reefs and see fish that other people likely missed from the surface. However, that was my personal preference and I'm sure those fins will work just fine for surface / beginner snorkeling.
If you want any tips for the big island, I'll be happy to share. Hawaii is mind-blowing. Literally mind-blowing.
I stayed in Waikaloa btw.
JUST GOT BACK FROM THE BIG ISLAND!!!
My husband who is a sceptic of most activities FELL IN LOVE with snorkeling on the beach near Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. We were not staying there but there is public parking you can use as a visitor. We stayed there all day and used traditional snorkeling masks.
The beach is so pretty it is unreal and the biodiversity was amazing. They also have manta rays that visit at night.
Do not buy a full face mask.
They have a pile of flaws, and can be really dangerous (potentially even fatal) due to CO2 build up.
Outside that, provided the mask fits you should be fine. I know people who have used cheap "get started" kits for years.
A mask that fit you (with tempered glass), with a comfortable snorkle, and fins that fit you well. You should try the mask before buying. The one you get online might not fit you.
Hi!
I was looking for mask-snorkel-fins for this summer and I found many different brands. Even narrowing down to one brand the offer is still wide.
-What features should I look for a good mask?
-Dry or semi-dry snorkel? With or without purge valve?
-I will move a lot during my vacation: what are some good short fins?
Thank you!
Hi. Mask always choose one that fits ur face and feels confortable. Snorkel same with its mouthpiece. Something that feels confi in your mouth. About purge valve, i dont like it, but that personal. Fins i would recomend full feet if u gonna sk from sandy shore or boats, but consider booties and open hill if you gonna walk through rocky areas or such. Much convenient. I would check for diving fins instead of snorkeling only (snorkel mini blade fins have ridiculous thrust) There are good ones with a respectable blade size that are still travel friendly.
thank you!
What everybody else said, but to add snorkels. Dry snorkels have a float that shuts off if there's a wave, but it also shuts off if you tilt the snorkel at the right angle. So if you look up too far you can't get air. So I prefer a semi dry snorkels with a pirge valve on the bottom, then learn how to blow water out if it gets in.
FIT FIT FIT are the three most important criteria for a mask.
Simple snorkel is best; no splash proof, no purge; learn to use a snorkel.
FIT FIT FIT are the 3 most important criteria for fins. Full foot if the water is warm enough to allow it, or you want to wear them over an exposure suit.
Thanks! I will buy from a website where I can return easily in case it doesn't fit
If you have a local dive shop, patronize it. It's better for everyone.
Actually everything will do the job. You can get Sets for hundreds of bucks but a 40$ set will be fine too. You have to choose for yourself what you need or want. This applies on every piece of gear
Allright, thanks!
Rip board
Is OP cutting footage when he's rock-boarding, or because he has to unstrap and rock boot it?
Believe it or not I only had to unstrap once for about 20 feet out of a 2100' descent, although most people probably would have hiked down a few hundred of that rather than risk their boards/bodies
This is like how some of my backcountry split buddies will goat back down, with their savaged splitboards. Meanwhile I'm booting these sections...
I do have a couple rock boards for inbounds tho.
I love everything about this. Including the "rip board" people.
I'll take rock riding a beater over the umpteenth "look at my new board" preseason post any day and then some.
But look at my Orca!
This is the proper use of a skate banana.
I don't know this term? Is that ski blades or am I retarded?
Edit. Thanks for the replies. I'm retarded. I kept googling ski bananas.. try googling that and finding out what the fuck y'all are talking about haha
Skate banana is the original rocker shaped board by lib tech.
A rock-board is an essential piece of gear
I keep my other snowboard in my car's roof box so it's with me when needed.
Clearly half of the people on this comment section ride twice a year and dont know anything about rock boards
That specific snorkel looks like a Toyota TRD "Desert Air Intake" based on the shape vs an aftermarket one like an ARB Safari. Pretty sure you can't buy it new anywhere since Toyota discontinued it, so used is the only option.
This... Looks like the OEM snork.
Except these factory "snorkels" on the trds are made for dust and not sealed for water....
It's gonna look sick when you roll up at Costco with that on there.
I regularly find myself using my snorkel in the small puddle behind my local Walmart
Of all the off-road mods to take the piss about why snorkels? Like I get that you need more than just a snorkel to be able to go charging through high water (and also is that a questionable thing to do for long term reliability). But they're pretty cheap insurance for oh fuck that puddle was a bit deeper than expected.
Ain't no puddles that deep at Costco....
Do you have the same response to people who have a trailer hitch but aren't currently towing a trailer?
Posers.
Only towing some of the time.
That’s an ARB Safari. You can buy it on Amazon or a thousand other places.
This! Just hit up eBay, etc, search for 3rd gen Tacoma snorkel.
We've had some crazy raining where I live in the past week and the city center was flooded 3 times. Every time this hapenned there were cars with flooded engines. I'm actually considering installing one just to avoid being in such a situation. It looks stupid but hey, itdoesn't hurt with anything and if you ever get the hood underwater your engine is safe.
I like the snorkel better as well. Fits with the boy with the harpoon on the backpack and the scuba diving gear if you color match their equipment
Yup. Flippers on backpack was my decider.
There’s no question. Snorkel.
Snorkel, 100%. Makes ‘im breave gud
I feel like snorkel is funnier but the other has a better appearance
I honestly like the snorkle head better! I think you did pretty solid on the goggles and I'd be proud of either option!
I felt the snorkel had a better appearance because it's what the poor grot could find also mine is called scuba Steve because he has the snorkel
Gimp over swim boi?
Both are equally funny depending on how you look at it the leather mask looks like a bdsm mask
Personally I went with the Zipper, shut the grot up for sneakin'.
But if you go snorkel you need to name him scuba steve
Hahahahahah. For sure!
Depends.
Do you want a Ninja Grot or a Navy SEALS Grot?
There are no wrong answers.
