What Redditors are Saying

Best Software for Creating AMVs

TL;DR

  • DaVinci Resolve: Highly recommended for its powerful features and free version.
  • Kdenlive: A good mix of simplicity and power, suitable for beginners.
  • Hitfilm Express: Offers a similar layout to Premiere Pro and is user-friendly.

DaVinci Resolve

DaVinci Resolve emerges as a popular choice across multiple discussions. It's praised for its robust editing capabilities, industry-leading color correction tools, and integrated audio editor [1:4][3:1]. The software offers a free version that is sufficient for creating AMVs, with the studio version not being necessary for most users [2:1]. While it can be resource-intensive, many users find it worth the investment in learning [4:5].

Kdenlive

Kdenlive is another free option mentioned frequently. It is appreciated for being beginner-friendly while still offering powerful editing tools [3:1][4:1]. Users have noted that Kdenlive provides a good balance between ease of use and functionality, making it ideal for those new to video editing.

Hitfilm Express

Hitfilm Express is highlighted by users who appreciate its similarity to Premiere Pro, allowing tutorials for Premiere Pro to be easily adapted to Hitfilm [3:3]. This software is recommended for beginners due to its straightforward interface and comprehensive features.

Other Options

Some users have also suggested other software like Olive, Movavi Video Editor, and Blender. Olive is noted for its ease of use with the help of YouTube tutorials [4:4], while Movavi is praised for its effectiveness in creating WMVs [4:6]. Blender, though primarily a 3D modeling program, is considered underrated for video editing but may require more effort to master [3:2].

Considerations Beyond the Discussions

When choosing software, consider your computer's hardware capabilities, especially if opting for resource-heavy programs like DaVinci Resolve. Additionally, ensure that you are comfortable with the software's interface and that it meets your specific needs for creating AMVs, such as clip arrangement and music synchronization.

For basic mobile projects, I use iMovie. For bigger PC projects, I use Filmora9. For getting my hands on music, I use Y2Mate.

davey101_ · 4 years ago

I'm also very interested in this question - specifically in tools that make it easy to arrange clips to music.

I already know the basics of editing and use Blender but that's a pain in the ass for music. Even the speed control is a bit of a pain.

Marutein1 · 4 years ago

Well with blender you use a program that is not made for editing. It's main purpose is 3d objects and renders. There I would recommend to change to an editing software. As said before I can recommend Davinci Resolve. You have also an audio program in it for mastering.

I've installed Resolve because I have a project I want to make. I'm very impressed so far! Thanks

For PC or phone? If PC they are some free programs. I work now with the free version of Davinci Resolve and think it's very strong. I worked with different programs in the past like Premiere, Vegas Pro, Edius, Final Cut and Magix Video Maker. And I would NOT to recommend to start with After Effects what some people recommend. For the start to learn the basics and understand editing it's better to learn a normal editing software.

If you use Davinci Resolve maybe skip first the Fusion tab. It's like After Effects but in my opinion hard to learn.

If you intent to monetize your AMV you should know that a lot of studio will come after you depending on the anime you choose.

A lot of people use Adobe Video Software

1 upvotes on reddit
Good_Childhood_7894 · 6 months ago

Awesome! If you want to dive into video editing, the first thing to consider is which software you’re going to use. Here are a few popular options:

  • Sony Vegas (though I’m not sure if people still use it; you might find a cracked version online to get started),
  • Adobe After Effects (great for adding visual effects),
  • DaVinci Resolve (new and they have a free version),
  • CapCut (especially useful if you’re editing on mobile; check if it's still widely used).

Once you've chosen your software, it’s time to get the anime footage you want to edit or the music to accompany it. Most anime websites offer downloadable content, so aim for the highest quality available.

Next, you’ll need some music to sync with your edit. You can find tracks on YouTube, or try AI tools that generate sounds based on your ideas, like Suno AI. To download music or videos from YouTube, I recommend using cobalt.tools — it’s straightforward; just copy and paste the link.

Now that you have the anime footage, music, and the editing program, it's time to start experimenting! Get a feel for the software; there’s no pressure to make it perfect since you’re just beginning.

Look for tutorials on YouTube for guidance:

  • How to cut in [Your Editing Program]
  • How to sync audio in [Your Editing Program]
  • How to color correct in [Your Editing Program]
  • How to add scripts/presets in [Your Editing Program]

There are a ton of editing styles out there! One popular trend is short edits (around 10-25 seconds) featuring glowing, flashy effects with 3D text, often set to hard bass music (check out this example: ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQ3L7eoIDj4

Personally, I prefer the classic AMVs, like Linkin Park Naruto edits, or more modern styles that sync with the music (like this example:) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cf4AUbSbdRQ

Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to edit. Some people love one style while others prefer another—what matters is that you enjoy the process. Editing can be a lot of fun, and there’s so much creativity to explore. Good luck!

Many answers you have are answered in the FAQ of this subreddit.

For the other thing, monetization will not be possible and it can end that you need to take the videos down because some anime studios will not tolerate it.

For software well what fits you best. If you search for a strong but also free one, I can recommend Davinci Resolve. It is a professional software, the difference to the studio version is mostly not relevant for making AMV's. You will find other people who use Adobe suite (Premiere and/or After Effects), Magix Vegas, Pinnacle Studio and others.

For the beginning I recommend to play around and see how you get along with everything. Then you can go deeper into the rabbit hole and work on simple techniques and analysis of your videos and then other's.

Davinci resolve is a popular choice that's free as in beer, but not as in speech.

Depending on how sophisticated you want to get on the open source front, there's kdenlive, blender, openshot, pitivi, and a few others. Kdenlive is probably the best mix of power and simplicity. I personally believe Blender is underrated, but it's tricky being mostly a 3D modeling program.

I've personally had a lot of success with Hitflm Express. It's got a pretty similar layout to Premiere Pro, so I can usually watch tutorials for pr pro and easily translate it over to Hitfilm. While there's a few things I wish I had premiere pro or after effects for, overall I've been pretty happy with Hitflm. If you really are just starting out, it's definitely a good option

Well there are some free options. Kdenlive and Davinci Resolve for example. I can't say much about Kdenlive because I never tried it so far. For Davinci Resolve i can say, it's awesome. You have a good editing software, the best color correction tool in the industry, a post production effect tool with Fusion and Fairlight which is the audio editor, all build in into DaVinci Resolve. The free version is totally fine for AMVs and the stupid version is not needed.

Editing software recommendations?

Posted by TheRealRenKun · in r/amv · 2 months ago

Hi all. I used to have a lot of fun making amvs years ago and wanted to try doing it again. I used to use Sony vegas pro 13 (a free version) unfortunately it was on an old laptop that doesn't work anymore.

So does anyone have a recommendation for a software to use that's decent? I tried davinci already cause I'd seen people recommending it but it sadly doesn't work on my current laptop. I don't really trust sketchy free downloads anymore in case of viruses but I also don't wanna pay a ridiculously price for a software when I'm just wanting to make things occasionally for fun. So I don't really know what to look for and any recommendations is appreciated!

OuterGod_Hermit · 2 months ago

Thing is, that laptop doesn't have a dedicated GPU. What they mean by AMD Radeon, is that you're using the CPU integrated GPU as a video card. AMD has way better iGPU (the ones that comes with the CPU, same chip) than Intel but still quite underpowered compared to an actual GPU (a standalone chip).

Many video editors require a dedicated GPU, even if it is a low-power one. So, your laptop technically has a GPU, but it doesn't. Being a laptop is even worse, since since they are in the same chip, the heat generated by one directly affects the performance of the other. Even if you make it work, you'll will need to work with 720p, Idk about 1080p, but probably it can be done if you are patient.

DaVinci expects a dedicated GPU and doesn't see one. There are programs that simulate the existence of one, but that was 15 years ago, I don't know if that's still a thing.

1 upvotes on reddit
Marutein1 · 2 months ago

Did you download the studio version? Or the ARM version by accident? If not can you go to the Preferences > memory and GPU > and change GPU processing mode from auto/Cuda to OpenCL?

This may help. I don't know what the problem is, because I have also on a notebook Resolve installed with no dedicated GPU...

What’s Your Go-To Video Editing Software? Looking for Recommendations and Opinions!

Posted by officedm · in r/softwarehelpdesk · 2 months ago

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to get into video editing and wanted to share some popular software options I’ve found, plus get your opinions on what’s best!

Here’s a quick list of some great video editing programs based on different needs:

Beginner-Friendly & Free:

  • DaVinci Resolve - Powerful, professional-level features, free version available. Slight learning curve but worth it.
  • HitFilm Express - Easy to start with and offers cool effects too.
  • iMovie (Mac only) - Simple and perfect for quick edits.
  • OpenShot - Open-source and beginner-friendly.

Intermediate to Advanced (Paid or Free with More Features):

  • Adobe Premiere Pro - Industry standard, very powerful, subscription-based.
  • Final Cut Pro (Mac only) - Professional and fast, one-time purchase.
  • Filmora - Easy to learn with tons of effects, affordable.

Specialty or Lightweight:

  • Shotcut - Free and open-source, good for simple edits.
  • Lightworks - Professional-grade with free and paid versions.

If you’ve used any of these or have other recommendations, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Also, if you want advice on what might suit your computer or project type, just ask.

Thanks!

I’ve tried a few different editing tools over time, and honestly, the choice depends on the project type. For quick edits, I find Filmora and Adobe Premiere Rush really handy because they’re simple and less time-consuming. But when I need something more professional with deeper control, Adobe Premiere Pro is my go-to.

For color grading and detailed corrections, I’ve seen a lot of editors lean towards DaVinci Resolve – it has amazing features, though it takes a bit of learning.

Also, when it comes to handling large wedding or event projects where bulk editing and consistency are important, I’ve found services like Photodotedit quite reliable. They help streamline photo/video editing workflows for professionals, especially when deadlines are tight.

So in short –

  • Quick Edits → Filmora, Rush
  • Professional Depth → Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve
  • Bulk or Consistency → Outsourcing (like Photodotedit)

It really depends on your editing needs and how much time you want to spend on post-production.

Does anyone knows any good editing program?

Posted by FreddyTheMartian · in r/letsplay · 6 months ago

I used movie maker long time ago, but if i remember correctly, it was only able to render 720p at 30fps. worst of all for some reason, i'm unabble to install it now.

Then, what i was doing, was that i moved the video into my tablet and edit it in free software from google play. The problem was that it was a verry slow process, it was limiting on technical side, and it was cumbersome.

Now i edit with blender, wich is extremly slow. everi time i make cut the strip and hit play, it has 10s lag. So it takes like 10x longer than it should. Also it's verry limiting on efects.

I also tryed those "free" editors, that put a masive water mark on your video, making it unwatchable.

Does anyone have any better options?

Back when I was making LPs (stopped because life but thinking of coming back), I used Vegas for everything. Very verastile, easy to learn, and did everything I wanted it to. Good for novice and experience editors alike. Nowadays I am hearing Resolve is becoming the new go-to solution. I've yet to check it myself so I can't offer an opinion on it.

best software for creating amvs

Key Considerations for AMV Software:

  1. User Interface: Look for software with an intuitive interface that allows for easy navigation and editing, especially if you're a beginner.

  2. Editing Features: Ensure the software offers essential features like cutting, trimming, transitions, effects, and audio synchronization to create a polished AMV.

  3. Supported Formats: Check that the software supports a wide range of video and audio formats to accommodate your source material.

  4. Performance: Choose software that can handle high-resolution videos (1080p or 4K) without lagging, especially if you're working with detailed animations.

  5. Export Options: Look for software that provides various export options, including different resolutions and formats, to suit your sharing needs.

Recommendations:

  • Adobe Premiere Pro: A professional-grade software with extensive features for video editing, including advanced effects, transitions, and audio editing. It's great for serious AMV creators but comes with a subscription cost.

  • Final Cut Pro: Ideal for Mac users, this software offers powerful editing tools and a user-friendly interface. It’s perfect for creating high-quality AMVs.
