How to Make an AMV (Anime Music Video)

Creating an AMV involves combining anime clips with music to produce a cohesive and engaging video. Here's a guide based on insights from various discussions.

Gathering Clips

To start making an AMV, you'll need high-quality anime clips. Many creators download full episodes from torrent sites like nyaa.si and then cut out the scenes they want to use [4:5]. Some prefer using pre-cut clips from websites like animeclips.online for convenience [4:4]. It's important to ensure that the clips you use are of high quality since editing and uploading can degrade the video quality [4:2].

Choosing Software

Selecting the right video editing software is crucial. Popular choices include Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, and Sony Vegas [1:1][1:2]. DaVinci Resolve is recommended for its professional features and free version [1:5]. If you're new to DaVinci Resolve, focus on learning the Edit Tab and familiarize yourself with tutorials [4:1].

Editing Techniques

When editing your AMV, consider synchronization and pacing. Start by cutting scenes that match the mood or vibe of the music [5:1]. Don't worry about achieving perfect sync initially; focus on conveying emotion through your cuts [3:3]. Incorporating quotes and sound effects can enhance the storytelling aspect of your AMV [3:4].

Sharing and Monetization

Sharing your AMVs can be tricky due to copyright issues. Platforms like Vimeo or TikTok may be less strict than YouTube [3:3]. Be aware that monetizing AMVs might not be possible, as studios often protect their content [1:3]. Always give credit for the clips and music used [4:7].

Community and Inspiration

Engage with other AMV creators and seek inspiration from contests or online competitions [2:1]. Watching award-winning AMVs can provide ideas and improve your skills. Connecting with fellow creators can also be beneficial for feedback and growth [4:7].

By following these steps and continually practicing, you'll improve your AMV-making skills and develop your unique style. Remember to have fun and create videos that you enjoy watching!

ORIGINAL POST

Hi everyone I just wanna ask some quick questions creating AMVs

  1. How do yall gather/download/get your clips?
  2. What video editing software do yall use?
  3. Any tips and tricks yall wanna share?
Marutein1 · 6 months ago

Many answers you have are answered in the FAQ of this subreddit.

For the other thing, monetization will not be possible and it can end that you need to take the videos down because some anime studios will not tolerate it.

For software well what fits you best. If you search for a strong but also free one, I can recommend Davinci Resolve. It is a professional software, the difference to the studio version is mostly not relevant for making AMV's. You will find other people who use Adobe suite (Premiere and/or After Effects), Magix Vegas, Pinnacle Studio and others.

For the beginning I recommend to play around and see how you get along with everything. Then you can go deeper into the rabbit hole and work on simple techniques and analysis of your videos and then other's.

If you intent to monetize your AMV you should know that a lot of studio will come after you depending on the anime you choose.

A lot of people use Adobe Video Software

Awesome! If you want to dive into video editing, the first thing to consider is which software you’re going to use. Here are a few popular options:

  • Sony Vegas (though I’m not sure if people still use it; you might find a cracked version online to get started),
  • Adobe After Effects (great for adding visual effects),
  • DaVinci Resolve (new and they have a free version),
  • CapCut (especially useful if you’re editing on mobile; check if it's still widely used).

Once you've chosen your software, it’s time to get the anime footage you want to edit or the music to accompany it. Most anime websites offer downloadable content, so aim for the highest quality available.

Next, you’ll need some music to sync with your edit. You can find tracks on YouTube, or try AI tools that generate sounds based on your ideas, like Suno AI. To download music or videos from YouTube, I recommend using cobalt.tools — it’s straightforward; just copy and paste the link.

Now that you have the anime footage, music, and the editing program, it's time to start experimenting! Get a feel for the software; there’s no pressure to make it perfect since you’re just beginning.

Look for tutorials on YouTube for guidance:

  • How to cut in [Your Editing Program]
  • How to sync audio in [Your Editing Program]
  • How to color correct in [Your Editing Program]
  • How to add scripts/presets in [Your Editing Program]

There are a ton of editing styles out there! One popular trend is short edits (around 10-25 seconds) featuring glowing, flashy effects with 3D text, often set to hard bass music (check out this example: ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQ3L7eoIDj4

Personally, I prefer the classic AMVs, like Linkin Park Naruto edits, or more modern styles that sync with the music (like this example:) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cf4AUbSbdRQ

Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to edit. Some people love one style while others prefer another—what matters is that you enjoy the process. Editing can be a lot of fun, and there’s so much creativity to explore. Good luck!

The thing is what you want to make. If you are new be sure to get the basics like synchro and the right speed. Then concept development is a part. I would say get some inspiration by watching AMV's from contests, winners. Search for contests of conventions or online competitions, like AWA, JapanExpo, Big Contest, TOS, NekoCon, some ICs like Soul's Team.

Well I just post my blog where I wrote about all stuff around AMV's. Vidderscorner Blog by Falconone

Maybe be More specific. New to AMV's and on the search for critic's This one is all about the beginning. I started writing it because some people posted the first video they made and wanted feedback. At the beginning it's all an exploration and should be fun. This article goes into detail about the beginning.

Understanding Music to improve your AMV's Here it is all about synchronization, beat and speed. Understanding the audio can help to find the right moments and the scene selection to work best with your music.

Effects and AMV's Is an older article where I talk about my opinion on effects, when to use them and how to analyze other work and learn there. Effects are for many a big must, but here I say it also, if someone makes a good scene selection and well placed cuts, they are already at a good point and can bring enjoyment to people.

For sharing well YouTube is mostly the first place for most creators. Mostly what can happen is copyright claim or blocking in some regions. This can happen but the thing is always, why do you make the videos, to get fame and money? If yes, then sadly AMV's are not the best way.

Overall the most important thing is still having fun.

Start messy. Your first AMVs are going to look rough and that’s fine, the only way to get good is to keep making them. Don’t get caught up chasing “perfect sync” right away, focus on telling a vibe or emotion through your cuts. As for posting, YouTube might flag you, so a lot of people throw stuff on Vimeo or even TikTok where copyright bots aren’t as strict. Biggest tip: have fun with it, because if you’re not enjoying it, the edit will feel flat too.

Theses many styles of amvs but i want to create a similar style to what you showed but in my own way.

Warm_Transition5675 · 1 month ago

Hmm, what I would advice for when you want to make a story in your amv, is that you choose a character that you like and has meaning to you. Because the story in the edit will be better, you can choose a popular character and maybe have more views. But it wouldn't be something you become really proud of. Also use quotes, you can use quotes in many ways. If you have beats, but the scene doesn't match the beat, you can use a quote to hide it. Use quotes, where you think that fits the music and tone of your edit. And use soundeffects, you can a lot of sound packs online that can make your edit give a nice touch. If you want some soundeffects feel free to ask. For free non copyrighted music use this: https://tunetank.com/.

If you want to do some more flashy edits, I would recommend downloading these plugins for After Effects:

- window fx console: it's gonna save you a ton of time
- element 3d: 3d things
- twixtor: fast to slomo
- move anchor point: for text or animations
- flow: easy transitions
- deep glow: glow
- sapphire: cool effects
- BCC: more cool effects
- anime scripter: depth map can be cool for compositing
- auto nulls: save you more time
- magic bullet looks

- twitch plugin: shakes

The last thing I would have wanted that somebody told me, is that there are many times where I didn't like the edit and that really demotivated me. You want to create something that you thought of in your head, but making it it looks like shit. But that is a part of learning that you have to accept and try to make it better the next time. Also keep having fun with the proces of editing and not only the end result!

Making AMVs is a lot of fun. I really enjoy it. I’ve bounced around and played with different types of content over the years and I got back into AMVs last year. There’s a lot of different styles and ways to cut an AMV. Best advice I can give is to just jump in and start making stuff. Don’t be too critical of yourself, it’s perfectly normal to make stuff that’s not great. The important thing is to make what you want to see, and when it’s done, reflect on what’s working and what’s not. Push yourself with every new project, but not so much that you risk burning yourself out.

As far as sharing work. YouTube is perfectly suited to host, just know that you will get flagged for copyright, and that’s completely normal. That’s just the Content ID system making sure nobody is trying to profit off of an artists material.

Beginner's advice

Posted by Amazing-Substance927 · in r/amv · 1 month ago

Hey Guys! I was always interested in AMV making, and after all, I'd like to try to make my own AMVs, but I'm totally clueless.

If you had to give yourself one piece of advice from when you first started making AMVs, what would it be?
Also, on which platforms do you usually download your content? Do you cut scenes out of full episodes, or what’s the best way to do this?
I’ll be using DaVinci Resolve—any tips for that?

Thank you so much in advance for the help, I can’t wait to show you what I’ll create too!

If I had to give myself any advice it would be to meet other creators in the space. Find people similar to yourself that are just starting out and learn from each other.

For content: it’s really going to be on you to figure out your method of approach. Theres a lot of places for torrents and clips, and also a ton of channels on YouTube that post clips and green screens. Just make sure to always give credit

Scenes: Personally I cut what I need from my source as I go. I know some others that only rely on precut clips. That’s also going to be up to you to determine the method that works best for you.

Thanks for your help! Is there a specific site what you prefer to get your anime from? And how long is a scene which are good to work with?

Sqrtlwthecoolshades · 1 month ago

I dont have a preference on where the anime comes from, just that it’s high quality. Editing and then uploading will degrade things a bit so starting with the highest quality source available is ideal.

Scene length is going to depend entirely on you and what you want to do with an edit. This is definitely a learn as you go type of hobby. Dont be afraid to just jump in make start making stuff

  • I suggest you do what you like and learn raw editing first (especially scene selection)

  • Use nyaa.si (works with torrents) to download your anime, so you're gonna have to derush everything yourself on software like Premiere Pro, VirtualDub2 (I use that one) or Davinci. That's the best thing to do for the best quality (learn how encode works for that).

Use animeclips.online if you're lazy

  • can't give you any advice for Davinci cause I don't use it, but I've got a tutorial. It's in french though (with english subs)

Amazing-Substance927 · OP · 1 month ago

For example, do you especially download your anime, and cut out the specific scenes you want to use? Or do you use animeclips? I checked that website, but I can't search for specific animes, only what the site recommends, why is it so?

I find it sooo difficult to find specific scenes from animes, even after I saw a lot of animes, but maybe it's just me who got difficulties with this haha

2 upvotes on reddit
Maeroucarnage · 1 month ago
  • I generally pick an anime I like and cut "everything" except if I have a really clear project in mind (like if I want to use a single character)

  • you can search for specific animes on animeclip, there just aren't a lot on the website.

  • I use animeclip when I don't have time to derush myself

dw it's not only you haha! You're a beginner so it's normal to struggle

Welcome to the hobby of AMVs.

Some advice I would give you: don't think too much about what others would like, make what you enjoy, and have fun making videos.

For source getting, I would also say nyaa, as already mentioned. For handling the files, amv101 has some great information for that. Mostly I loaded full episodes into my editor and then cut the scene that I feel fits.

For Davinci Resolve, I would focus first on the Edit Tab and get familiar with it. For tutorials, there are a lot, and they don't need to be specific to Anime. So I would recommend something like Casey Faris, MrAlexTech and Patrick Stirling (Do I summon him again? XD)

If you want more, well, I have a blog about AMV and Editing here Vidderscorner.
Some that are maybe interesting are

And one other thing, I did a while back, a podcast where I interviewed also some other editors about they start and so. Maybe that is also interesting to listen to.

What are you referring to by AMV? A fan-made music video, a musical artist's official music video, or an anime's intro or outro music video?

If you mean the first, you typically have something in mind for the vibe of the AMV just from the game/anime, and then you pick music based on that. Or you hear music that really fits a vibe you get from the game. Either way you already have music and the clips.

If you mean the second, again you typically have the music+lyrics first but you don't have any clips. You create the music video based on your interests, be it a simple performance video, or something with a narrative.

If you mean the third, they likely have a specific vibe in mind and then find music that fits the vibe. From what I've seen they mostly use art that isn't in the main anime itself so they're creating the clips there.

It's the second one. I want to make some short clips of AMV about my characters but it annoy me everytime I find a good song to put into my animation but the lyric at some part of the song don't fit my story. Now I know what to do. Thank you very much

AMVs are made for already existing songs. The music and lyrics are already there. The AMV maker finds scenes from anime and edits them to the music.

Why should it not count as an AMV? Anime music video is in the main definition using anime as main video source and music for main audio and combine it.

AMV has no definition for quality or special rules for it. If you think of rules to be something then it would be more of a style that has a definition of what it should look like to fall into it. (Candy, Daddy, and what they are all called) But overall AMV is a simple term. MAD was originally just the term for AMV's from Japanese community. Like cartoons in the west and anime in Japan as terms.

IWTL how to make an AMV (Anime Music Videos)

Posted by sippin_juice · in r/IWantToLearn · 2 months ago

I remember growing up I would hop on youtube and watch anime music videos most notably the Linkin Park ones. They would quite literally fuel my day. I still love anime and I often picture scenes in my head accompanied by songs I love, awkwardly enough I even sometimes picture myself as the main character.

Anyways fast forward to 2025 and now I brain rot on TT or Youtube shorts watching dope anime edits and I am in desperate need of a creative hobby. I have zero experience and a Mac Mini.

(How to edit videos might be a more suitable title)

I want to figure out:

    1. How are people getting such high quality clips (both visual and audio).
    1. What are the best (preferably free)editing tools. (If I get good I wouldn't mind spending money)
    1. (I'll probably run to youtube for this one, but wouldn't mind any information or even a push to the right video) How to edit?

Hi! This post just came up on my feed. I’m not super knowledgeable in the area. I know many people take clips off of YouTube, or torrent episodes and clip them themselves (nyaa.si is a good website for anime torrents).

I think After Effects is what a lot of people use? Also CapCut and sometimes da Vinci resolve and premiere pro

I’d probably just try following a basic editing tutorial at first for the program you decide to choose. Or you could follow a course ! good luck :)

If it's something you're interested in, go for it. If it ends up bad, nobody ever needs to see it but you. DaVinci Resolve is free and I've seen a lot of YouTubers switching to it from Premiere, so I imagine it's a good program to learn if you're looking to make editing into a hobby but it might be a little difficult to use initially.

Hey there, i'm in a pinch and need some AMV pointers.

I started making AMV few months ago and it's taking awfully long to get decent reach.

I spend crazy amount of time in each AMV so content is good ( at least to my eyes ).

I'm neither looking for monetisation nor fame but i find it quite depressing to have such a "no performance"

So my guess is, i screw up somewhere but i'm unable so see or understand where i'm bad or what i'm not doing that i should.

If you guys could share some tips that would be very helpful and very much welcome.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

How to make a AMV

Creating an Anime Music Video (AMV) involves several key steps:

  1. Choose Your Anime and Song:

    • Select an anime series or movie that resonates with the song you want to use. Ensure the themes of the anime and the song align for a cohesive narrative.
  2. Gather Your Materials:

    • Obtain high-quality video clips from the anime. You can use DVD/Blu-ray rips or find clips online. Make sure to respect copyright laws.
  3. Select Video Editing Software:

    • Use software that suits your skill level. Popular options include:
      • Beginner: Windows Movie Maker, iMovie
      • Intermediate: Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro
      • Advanced: Sony Vegas Pro, DaVinci Resolve
  4. Plan Your Edits:

    • Create a storyboard or outline to plan how you want to sync the visuals with the music. Identify key moments in the song that you want to highlight with specific clips.
  5. Edit Your Video:

    • Import your clips and music into the editing software. Cut and arrange the clips to match the rhythm and mood of the song. Use transitions and effects sparingly to enhance the video without overwhelming it.
  6. Add Text and Effects:

    • If desired, add titles, credits, or subtitles. Ensure they complement the visuals and don’t distract from the main content.
  7. Export Your AMV:

    • Once satisfied with your edits, export the video in a suitable format (e.g., MP4, AVI). Choose a resolution that balances quality and file size.
  8. Share Your AMV:

    • Upload your AMV to platforms like YouTube or Vimeo. Make sure to include relevant tags and descriptions to help viewers find your video.

Tips:

  • Practice Syncing: Pay attention to how well your clips sync with the beat and lyrics of the song. This can significantly enhance the impact of your AMV.
  • Watch Other AMVs: Analyze popular AMVs to understand different editing styles and techniques.
  • Respect Copyright: Be aware of copyright issues when using anime footage and music. Consider using royalty-free music or obtaining permission if necessary.

By following these steps, you can create an engaging and visually appealing AMV that showcases your creativity!
