TL;DR
Budget Options
For those looking to spend under $300, the Vizio M51ax-J6 is a popular choice due to its surround speakers and subwoofer, although reliability can be an issue [1:1]. The TCL Alto 8+ is recommended for its center channel that enhances dialogue clarity, which is particularly useful for action movies
[1:3],
[4:5]. Both options provide good sound quality improvements over standard TV speakers
[4:3].
Mid-Range Choices
The Sonos Beam is praised for its ease of setup and integration with streaming services and voice assistants, making it suitable for small spaces [3:1]. However, some users have experienced connectivity issues
[3:2]. Another option is the LG SK9Y, which offers Dolby Atmos and fills larger rooms effectively
[3:4]. These soundbars are ideal for enhancing dialogue clarity in movies and TV shows
[3:5].
High-End Recommendations
For those willing to invest more, the Sonos Arc is highly recommended for its impressive sound quality and potential for future upgrades with additional speakers or a subwoofer [5:2],
[5:5]. The Sennheiser AMBEO Max paired with a 12" REL subwoofer is another high-end option that delivers exceptional audio performance
[5:8].
Considerations for Space and Compatibility
Space constraints are an important consideration when choosing a soundbar. The Sonos Beam is noted for being suitable for apartment or condo-sized rooms, while the Sonos Arc provides deeper bass and can be expanded later [5:5]. Additionally, compatibility with gaming consoles like the PS5 is generally not an issue since many players use headsets
[5:1].
General Advice
Regardless of the budget, any soundbar will likely be an improvement over TV speakers alone [4:3]. It's also important to consider the type of content you watch most frequently, as different soundbars may excel in various areas such as bass for action movies or clarity for dramas
[3:5].
Hey! Been wanting to get one for my TV for quite some time and spent lots of time Googling what the best sound bar would be, however the searches seem to be all over the place.
Would anyone point me the best sound bar for my TV for under $300? I like to watch a lot of action movies and enjoy crisp audio.
You could also try a TCL soundbar from bestbuy. They sound pretty good,
Best Buy either has the Alto 8+ 2.1.2 (TS8212, currently $130) or Alto 9+ (TS9030, currently $270), it’s better to go to Walmart and get the Alto 8+ 3.1.2 (TS813/8132, currently $168). 8+ is overall better than the 9+ and the center channel is worth the extra $40 in my experience. Just a heads up.
I may return the 6+ I bought from bestbuy and order online the 8+ 2.1 since it’s not in stock at my local bestbuy. Comparing the two the soundbar with the 8+ is definitely nicer with more than two speakers inside it. Glad you mentioned the sale.
I have the 6+ and it sounds pretty good. I could return it to get the 8+ but I think I’ll probably let it go.
I appreciate this. Thank you!
Thank you!
For $300, you can try to gamble with the vizio m51ax-j6 that comes with surround speakers and a sub. I would buy it at a store with a good return policy because vizio soundbars tend to be unreliable. If you want something more reliable but that's not going to be as immersive, maybe check out the sonos ray.
Perfect! Thank you, I appreciate this.
Hi, I have two Play:1s as a stereo pair and I want to use them with my TV. So I am looking for a suitable sound bar, because I understand that this will be the only way for sound throughput for my TV. I am hoping for your help, since I have lost all oversight of the product palette.
What is really important for me, is that I prefer to NOT have any additional remote controls. I have a TV, where I use an Apple TV, Xbox and Switch. So which sound bar could handle throughput of all devices, while also using the Play:1s, without the need for a remote control?
I don't need a subwoofer, by the way.
You can use ant Sonos soundbar with your Play 1s as surrounds except the Arc Ultra, according to Sonos' support site:
https://support.sonos.com/en-us/article/surround-sound-guidelines-and-limitations
But there are posts where users have gotted Play 1s to work with the Ultra.
If your TV has an ARC or eARC connection, the Beam or Arc would be good choices.
If your TV has an optical audio connection, the Ray would be the choice for you. But you can also purchase an optical to HDMI adapter and use the Beam or Arc with your TV:
https://www.sonos.com/en-us/shop/optical-audio-adapter
Since Sonos does not include a remote control with any product you will need to teach your TV remote or Apple TV remote to control the the sound. This can be done inside the settings for the room.
Question: Do I HAVE TO set up the 1s as rear speakers? In the long term I would do that, but right now I can't do that.
Thank you, this helps a lot, I actually have both the eARC and the optical connection. I guess I'll go with the Beam.
Looking for the best soundbar as I am looking to upgrade my home entertainment setup, and after hours of binge-watching TV series and movies, I've realized that while my TV's picture quality is great, the audio... not so much. I'm pretty convinced that a soundbar would be a great addition to enhance the overall audio experience. But with so many options out there, I'm feeling a bit lost.
To give you a little context, I'm not a hardcore audiophile by any means. I'm just looking for something that offers crisp and clear sound, especially for dialogue in movies. A nice bass wouldn't hurt either, but it doesn't have to rattle the windows. And while I'm not extremely tech-savvy, I do appreciate user-friendly setups and features.
I've done a bit of initial research and come across a few products that seem to be mentioned quite frequently:
These are just the few that have crossed my radar, but I'm totally open to suggestions beyond these. A few things to keep in mind:
I'm leaning towards a soundbar mainly due to the space-saving factor and because I've heard they provide a good balance of audio quality and convenience. I'm not super keen on having a ton of separate speakers scattered around my living room, so a soundbar seems like the best bet. However, if you think there's another type of audio setup that might be better suited to my needs, please don't hesitate to mention it!
I'd really appreciate any feedback or personal experiences you can share. If you've had a particularly good (or bad) experience with any of the above-mentioned products, or if there's another gem out there that I'm missing, please let me know.
I had connectivity issues with my Sonos Beam. It sometimes lost the connection with my TV, which was really annoying. Ended up returning it.
Look, you're always going to get what you pay for. I'd recommend upping your budget a bit and investing in something that's going to last and give you great sound quality. Don't skimp on audio; it makes a huge difference to the viewing experience.
I'm using an LG SK9Y, and it's been pretty awesome. Has Dolby Atmos and the sound fills up my living room beautifully. Also, it's within your budget. Check it out
Don't forget to consider the type of content you watch most frequently. If you're into action movies or live sports, you might want something with a stronger bass. On the other hand, if you mainly watch talk shows or dramas, clarity might be more important.

I have a 2015 Samsung TV I bought in 2016. I used a Soundbar with it for a while but was moving and gave it away because it was so old. I now regret it because sometimes I have trouble hearing the dialogue watching television and movie sound effects seem kinda … muffled or garbled. My question is will ANY soundbar be a noticeable upgrade from just the TV speakers? I’m thinking of spending $200-ish on. Samsung soundbar. Also taking suggestions. Would a stand-alone unit be better or one with a subwoofer. I appreciate simplicity but if it’ll make a huge difference, I’d be willing. Thanks!
Yes, I have a TCL TS8132 3.1.2 I got from Walmart for $197. Sounds good, much better than tv or projector speakers. Center channel helps with dialogue along with some presets to help more. It has 3 front channels, a sub and 2 upward firing drivers for Atmos. Not the best Atmos, but does help open the soundstage a bit for content that supports it.
Thanks!
USUALLY any $200 will be better than TV by its self.
My 5 year old Yamaha yas109 is better then most tv’s. I use it as a Bluetooth speaker now.
My small bose soundlink mini from way back when is much better than my Samsung TV speaker.
Thanks!
I’d like to get a sound bar for my bf for Christmas but I have no idea what’s best, any recommendations would be much appreciated. We don’t have too much space so something not too large would be good, but will sacrifice space for sound quality.
Edit: 65” Sony tv. Also something that works well with ps5? Although idk if this makes a difference anyway since he plays with the headset on all the time.
Sonos ARC
For >$700 why not just get a home theater sound setup? Only reason I can think of is maybe space constraint.
Because I am an installer and I know the quality that $700 will get you with a "home theater"
Sonos arc seems to be a favorite 😱 is just the soundbar alone enough? Or which package would be best for a condo sized living room?
Beam is great for apt/condo size rooms. But if you do want some bass to it the Arc does well on its own. Later down the line you can purchase a subwoofer or (2) era 300 or one sl for rear speakers if you are wanting to improve the sound further. Plenty of opportunity to grow later with Sonos.
Do you think the Sonos beam + subwoofer or beam + era speakers are better?
Sony HT-3000 with the SW3 Subwoofer would have deeper and richer bass, but the arc would be a better and more expensive soundbar
Sonos upgradeable later and different price points.
Sennheiser AMBEO Max with 12" REL sub
I second the Sonos arc , absolutely blows me away.
I’m looking to upgrade my home entertainment experience with better audio quality for movies, shows, and gaming, but with so many options available, it’s tough to choose. Any recommendations?
You’ll be recommended the Samsung Q990d, or Q990c. I just recently installed the Q990d. It’s fantastic - for a price to value ratio it’s very good. My kids and wife were blown away with it. For a non audiophile, it’s a damn good system.
Sony has amazing options, this post will help you

Best of the best would be q990c or d BUT if you want a very solid one for MUCH cheaper, you can look into its older iteration or the 900x series.
Q990c/d are 1000-1500$ sound system. Their price is quite inflated because the biggest improvement they have over previous gen is some features like auto EQ, nightmode, Alexa built in etc… but not much purely sound wise.
I personally got the Q900A + 2x SWA9500S rear speaker for 320$.
The sound difference is minimal. If the q990d is a 20/20, the q990c is a 19,5/20 and my q900a is a 18,5/20. And its 70% cheaper lol
The Q950T can also be a great choice if you have good deals since it is from 2020. Lacks some features the others have but it’s probably top 5 Samsung in terms of sound quality. Very good one!
Check out Never enough Tech on U tube.
I’m in the market for a new soundbar and I keep seeing so many options that it’s hard to know what’s actually worth it. I’d rather hear from people who’ve used them day-to-day instead of just reading spec sheets and marketing.
Main things I care about:
Budget is flexible, but I don’t want to overpay for something that’s all hype.
Some models I keep seeing recommended are:
So, in your experience, what’s the best soundbar you’ve actually owned or tried, and why?
I’ve had an excellent Sonos Playbar for 10 years if you wanna look for preowned stuff since it’s not made anymore. Sooo much good noise in a bar which fit all your main things.
Fiddled with it maybe 3 times over the years. Connected to my Mac Studio through the tv and optical. You can experiment with having it standing up or laying flat depending on placement and maybe get a little more bass. The sound from Oppenheimer 4K bluray is astonishing from a bar in my opinion. Had parties here with Spotify that sounds great and loud.
Wow, 10 years is impressive for a soundbar. Didn’t know the Playbar could still hold up like that. I’ll keep an eye out for a used one, sounds like it really delivers. Thanks for the tip!
Yeah, had to check myself but 2015 is 10 years ago. I personally think there was a bit difference to the new Sonos bars but only heard them in the store. New ones being smaller might play a role here. There is probably some comparisons on YouTube but I’m to lazy to link and have a cold.
r/Soundbars has some good discussions
FWIW, I recently did an analysis on Reddit data for soundbars. Basically ranked them by aggregated sentiment. Maybe you'll find it helpful https://redditrecs.com/soundbar/ You can filter by price or by specific use cases like dialogue, music, or movies and get a breakdown of what ppl have said about the most often recommended ones (disclaimer some links are affiliate they help fund the analyses)
For clear dialogue and minimal fuss, Samsung Q990C/D is the best all‑rounder; if you want a smaller sub, go Sonos Arc with Sub Mini or Sony Theater Bar 9 with the SW3. That dataset lines up with my testing: Q990 excels for movies and volume leveling; Sonos wins on setup and reliability; Bose is easy but sounds narrower for the price. Quick setup tips: use HDMI eARC with TV audio on Pass‑Through, run room correction (SpaceFit/Trueplay/Sony optimization), and bump the center +1 on Samsung or Dialogue to Low on Sony. Budget pick: Vizio M‑Series 5.1-disable Virtual:X and raise center +2 for cleaner voices. I cross‑check RTINGS and AVS Forum; lately Pulse for Reddit helps surface solid owner reports fast. Pick Q990C/D for immersion, or Arc/Sub Mini for cleaner bass in smaller rooms.
That’s super helpful, thanks for laying it out so clearly. I keep seeing the Q990C/D pop up for dialogue and movies, and your breakdown makes sense, especially the tip about bumping the center channel. I hadn’t thought about pairing the Arc with the Sub Mini but that actually might be perfect for my room size. Appreciate the setup tweaks too, I’ll definitely try those out.
Very cool, but I'm curious why the Ambeo soundbars don't make your list?
Well it seems to be a reflection that relatively speaking, much less people are recommending the Ambeo soundbars on Reddit relative to the rest. Might be related to its high price. Note that the list ranks by most often recommended, not highest end.
You can see the mentions of the Ambeo soundbar here https://redditrecs.com/soundbar/model/sennheiser-ambeo-soundbar
Try Teufel Cinebar Pro :) i have it with sub and it's amazing. Without it every soundbar will sound just a bit better then tv speakers
Yes, never had an issue with dialogue. There is also a mode for clearing the dialogue, probably an equalizer setting. Again, I'm comparing it to LG C1 speakers and not the other soundbars. But you can still find plenty of reviews and maybe test them in a store.
I think you better post this in r/audiophile or somewhere more related.
Nevertheless, I only have experience with Samsung Q990C and it's very good all rounder. I don't have experience with the others.
Oh nice, hadn’t even looked into the Ambeo before. I’ll check out the Plus and Max and see which one makes sense for me, thanks!
Looking upgrade my home audio setup and I'm searching for the best soundbar currently available. I’m looking for something with excellent sound quality, good bass, and compatibility with streaming services. A sleek design and features like Dolby Atmos would be a bonus.
What soundbars would you recommend? Are there any specific models or brands that stand out?
Samsung HW-Q930 series deserves to be talked about more. It's a great soundbar!
Same for the q800c. It’s also very very good
Samsung Q990D if you can snag it for a good deal. Woot had it for under a grand.
Had? Still is! 25 days left or until it sells out. Mine arrives today!
It’s $900 from focus camera on eBay. Bought mine before Thanksgiving. It arrived perfectly. It’s still 899 as we speak!
Yeah I have a hard time trusting anybody on eBay.
Ambio plus + your choice of sub. Tried several others at my house, hands down beat them all
Ambios plus is amazing , it's very clean and clear sounding imo
Q990D is exceeding all expectations at the moment for me. Just got it two days ago. Snagged it for $815 on eBay!
Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my TV setup and am on the hunt for a soundbar that offers great sound quality. I mostly watch movies and TV shows, but I also enjoy gaming and music. I'm looking for something that has clear dialogue, strong bass, and a well-rounded soundstage. My budget is around $500–$800 for a premium model. If you have any recommendations based on personal experience, or even specific brands or models to check out, I’d really appreciate it! Bonus points if it’s easy to set up and has good value for the price. Thanks in advance!
I did a lot of research and drove all around southern California to go to various retailers and hifi shops to listen to various sound bars and the one I went with is the Sennheiser Ambeo Max.
It's not small and it's not really reasonably priced but as far as soundbars go, it has the best sound, clarity, crisp highs, robus midrange, and has the power to fill a large room without leaving anything to be desired. It has support for ATMOS, comes with a calibration mic (makes a HUGE difference) so you can calibrate the soundbar to your room, and has lots of input ports. I'm using it with eARC to my LG OLED, utilizing its built-in DAC to handle all of the bit-perfect decoding.
One small downside is it doesn't have wireless sub support but it does have a dedicated wired sub output. The smaller (newer) model Ambeo Plus does support wireless sub but not surprisingly, only their own Sennheiser sub. The fix was pretty easy though. I got the SVS wireless adapter (the better version, not the cheaper model) and have it broadcasting the wireless subwoofer output to two wireless receivers to SVS SB3000 subs in the two front separate corners of the room. The subs are about 12' apart (TV in the middle and subs in corners) and I've not noticed any lag at all.
The whole setup rocks the house, sounds excellent when using proper audio sources, and it's a clean setup. Everything is mounted to the wall and you don't see any wires at all.
Ambeo plus and the matching is quite good. Sounds much better than a friends 800 series Samsung.
The 990d without a doubt, yes samsung fucked the update but that's not the soundbars fault and if you want prove look how pissed everyone is without it. Samsung fixing it and even those getting next day replacements it's too long.
Even a day without it would be rage inducing I only got away it because I turn automatic updates because many years ago I lost data because data one started.
I’ve seen some people mention the issues with the update, but it’s good to hear the soundbar itself is still solid. How’s the overall sound quality for you, especially when it comes to dialogue and bass? And do you feel like the soundstage really fills the room?
The sound is ridiculous right up to full volume, im a bit of a tech snob.
Everything in my house electronic is samsung and their flagship models except from the kitchen appliances they don't make.
I used to have bose audio equipment in the past, and 10k for a b and 0 system would be a waste for me.
990 is the best quality sound I've ever heard. If you are coming from anything other than a sound studio, you hear notes in music you have never heard before, and movies are game changers. I paid £860 for it, and quite frankly, I'd pay that a year, never mind the 10 it will last.
It has upwards and sidewards facing speakers, so do the rears.
I can not praise it enough. Having a samsung tv also gives you a symphony with ads, the tv speakers in also, and audio tracking. You hear bullets ping off the walls, and things bounce from the floor to the ceiling.
I promise you won't be disappointed.
I saw a deal the other day for a 65 95d tv and a q990d for £2400 that's a bargain.
An awesome feature it has among many is the ability to have the music on it play on other rooms I have a q30d in my bedroom and my son has a samsung soundbar maybe a q6 in his room and there is a 801d in the kitchen and it plays on these aswell. They can't play music in the 990s, so I think it's only the 9 series option
I don't have particular high ceilings or large rooms, so if you have really large rooms, the upwards and bass may be an issue, but with how loud it goes, i wouldn't think so.
Dialogue and bass are perfect and have mine set to 0, so I can't imagine you would have an issue.
There are a bunch of settings you can tinker with, but I leave it on adaptive and perfectly happy.
I would suggest if you can wait to grab the 990f, which is just coming out, because it has a new sub, which I'm jealous of. lol, I'm already thinking of excuses as to why I need one.
The only thing is the 990 is quite large, so check between your tv legs if it has 2.
I also have a 930d, which is the model below, and if I'm honest, I can't see much difference. Even my sons q6 is amazing it didn't come with rear speakers, but I got him 9200s ones for it they don't have the upwards or side ways speakers thou.
I couldn't speak more highly of the 801d ( no rears either) in the kitchen either ( I'm not some smug or rich asshole I used to have it in the bedroom so stuck it in there for when I'm cooking as I upgraded over time i moved the older stuff around the house is also didn't pay full price for any, all from deals or refurbished).
The samsung Smart Things app is a thing of beauty.
I'm a samsung fan boi so I'm kinda biased when it comes to samsung, but if someone tells you the 990d is bad, they liars. Sure they drop the ball with the update and the buds 2 pro I had were garbage and the fridge freezer I paid 2 grand for when one half the size and a quarter of price broke after a week and the day after I had the new floor put down with the cable and water pipe under it. I still wouldn't buy anything else.
Edit: I've seen you mentioned tvs.
I have 4 samsung in my home, a 8070, an 80d an 85d, and a 95d being an uhd a qled and 2 oled. I can't comment much on the 8070 as it's my sons but the others are fantastic the oled do much better black and the bloom than qled but if you hadn't seen the others couldn't tell. the oled also do the adaptive sound a little better but again if you weren't used to it then you can't tell.
The 4k upscaling is fucking amazing it turns a hd picture to 4k beautifully this is a feature i could not do without.
That was a bit of a book. Sorry, hope that answers if questions you.
If you have the resources, get a 95d and a 990d, and if you can wait, wait for the 990f. I'm not sure if they are doing anything new with tvs. Saying that if you can grab an 80d and a 930, don't hesitate. I doubt in the end the difference is anything much.
If anyone else is reading this and you are young or not have a huge budget consider a 8070 and q6 or 801d ( it's white and slim beautiful to look at even more so than the 9 series) my so. Has these and he is more than happy with them. The pair can be had for under £800 and would make anyone a great combo.
2nd edit: I seen your budget was in dollars not pounds sorry I'm from the uk.
I bought the 990D yesterday from Bestbuy - installed in less than 15 minutes. No issues. Samsung removed that update, so you will not have issues if you buy it now. It’s absolutely incredible and it replaced a Samsung S650 soundbar that was a medium tier. Night and day difference. Buy the 990
I'll second the 990d. Its such a badass system for the price. I snagged mine a month ago for $1k and they may become even cheaper once the 990F launches. Side note...sub position is crucial! I had mine to the right side of the TV and it was OK but not great. I moved it to the left side and now the entire house is filled with deep clean bass!
It will be out of your price range. For Samsung 800d or 930d should be in your prices.
You can check the in-depth différences on rtings but basically, 930 has rears and 2 more channels. Depends on your liking
Sony HTA 7000 soundbar
Jbl 5.1.2
The .2 defines that it has two upfiring speakers. Although it doesn't define if it's in front or back.
In this case, it is within the bar, so 2 front firing speakers are there.
Another example, Q990D is of config 11.1.4
Here 11 defines number of speakers on flat level, then .1 defines the number of subwoofer and .4 defines the number of upfiring speaker.
I may have not used the right terms at places , but i hope you got the idea now.
Also it's best to check product description and videos to understand which side the upfiring is present.
Maybe not the best since I'm not rich and haven't tried a bunch, but I got my JBL Bar 9.1 open box at Best Buy and it has been excellent. I have very picky ears and recognize a soundbar is a soundbar, but after placing the sub and rears properly and turning the sub to 2 I love it and think it sounds great with all kinds of content (music, movies, games). Had it a couple years now and it's been great!

Great post!
People are not comparing Q990C with just the Sonos Arc bar. If they would, Sonos would not stand a chance.
They are comparing it with Sonos Arc + Sub (gen 3) + some rears (Era 100, Era 300). From a price perspective this whole package is usually about double of Q990C
yes absolutely, I've fixed it now.
best soundbars for tvs
Key Considerations for Choosing a Soundbar:
Sound Quality: Look for soundbars with good audio performance, including clear dialogue and rich bass. Models with built-in subwoofers or separate subwoofers typically provide better bass response.
Channels: Consider the number of channels. A 2.1 channel soundbar includes two speakers and a subwoofer, while a 5.1 channel soundbar includes five speakers and a subwoofer, offering a more immersive surround sound experience.
Connectivity Options: Ensure the soundbar has multiple connectivity options, such as HDMI ARC, optical, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi, to easily connect to your TV and other devices.
Size and Design: Choose a soundbar that fits well with your TV size and room aesthetics. A soundbar should ideally be about the same width as your TV.
Smart Features: Some soundbars come with smart features like voice control, built-in streaming services, or compatibility with smart home systems, which can enhance usability.
Recommendations:
Sonos Beam (Gen 2): This compact soundbar offers excellent sound quality, supports Dolby Atmos, and has built-in voice assistants (Alexa and Google Assistant). It's great for smaller spaces and integrates well with other Sonos products.
Bose Soundbar 700: Known for its premium sound quality and sleek design, this soundbar features a built-in voice assistant and can be paired with a separate subwoofer for enhanced bass.
Samsung HW-Q950A: If you're looking for a full surround sound experience, this 11.1.4 channel soundbar includes rear speakers and a subwoofer, providing immersive audio for movies and gaming.
Vizio SB36512-F6: A more budget-friendly option, this 5.1 channel soundbar offers great sound quality and includes a wireless subwoofer and rear speakers, making it a fantastic value for home theater setups.
Choose based on your specific needs, room size, and budget to find the best fit for your TV setup!
