TL;DR
Commercial Stain Removers
OxiClean is frequently recommended for its effectiveness on various types of stains. It comes in different forms, including a gel stick that users find particularly useful for fresh stains [3:1]. America's Test Kitchen has rated OxiClean highly in their tests
[3:2]. Zout is another enzymatic cleaner praised for its cost-effectiveness and ability to treat specific stains
[3:5].
Carbona products are also mentioned as being effective for specific types of stains [2:1]
[3:3]. Shout is another popular choice, although some users have found it less effective than desired
[3:4].
Homemade Solutions
A mixture of Dawn dishwashing liquid and hydrogen peroxide is highlighted as an excellent homemade stain remover. This solution is biodegradable and can be stored in a dark glass spray bottle for easy application [4]. Hydrogen peroxide alone is noted for its ability to remove blood, wine, and berry stains without damaging fabrics
[4:1].
Alternative Methods
Saliva is suggested as a natural stain remover due to its enzymes and antibacterial properties, particularly for organic stains like blood [1:1]. Cold water is a crucial first step in treating stains, especially when applied immediately
[5:1]
[5:2]. Other household items like toothpaste and baking soda are mentioned as potential stain removers
[5:3].
Considerations Based on Fabric Type
The effectiveness of a stain remover can depend on the type of fabric and stain. It's important to identify the material and stain type before choosing a treatment [5:1]. For delicate fabrics, immediate cold water treatment is recommended to prevent setting the stain
[5:2].
Best stain remover recommendations !?
Saliva tbh. Its made of 2 things, 1 is antibacterial to a point and the other has bicarbonate ions and enzymes that dissolve things. Saliva is honestly the best option for things like blood removal but also most organic things can be dissolved by the enzymes in saliva.
Also tonic water
What really helped you with stubborn stains without damaging the clothes?
Dawn works amazing. Saturate the stain with Dawn and rub it in, then toss in the wash as one of the last items so it soaks a minute before the water gets to it.

I like Shout.
I like carbona for specific stains, oxyclean for general keep up. Different stains react differently though so I keep shout and method on hand as well.
I’ve been using Shout, but is hasn’t been working as well as I’d like.
Whatever their standard one is is what I have. With all of them, the longer you leave it on, the better it will work.
Several years ago America's Test Kitchen did a test of stain removers, and Oxyclean's won, hands down, so that's how I started using it
For specific stains I use the Carbona products.
I’m only using oxyclean as I’ve used it in the past, but do you see a difference between the two?
Fels Naptha laundry bar/stain remover is a classic: long-lasting, inexpensive, and effective.
I’ve never heard of it. I’ll have to give it a try! Thank you!
Zout
I’m only using oxyclean as I’ve used it in the past, but do you see a difference between the two?
I've never used OxiClean. I've used Zout for decades and it's always done a fine job. If a stain is removeable Zout will get it.
Both Zout and OxyClean are enzymatic cleaners but as far as I know OxiClean is a laundry detergent while Zout is a pre-laundry stain treatment.
With Zout I only have to dab on a spot of of it the size of a nickel on a stain. Or a quaretr if it's a large stain. So Zout would be much more cost-effective.
Oxyclean's stain remover seems to be the best.
Do you pretreat or just use in the laundry or a little of both?
I use the Oxyclean that comes in a tube with blue gel. The scrubbing top on stains works really well if the stains are fresh. Sometimes hard to find, so I buy several tubes of this stuff.
Thank you!!! I kid you not, I may try everything recommend 🤦🏻♀️
1 part Dawn dishwashing liquid to 2 parts Hydrogen Peroxide. Store in dark, glass spray bottle.
Apply to stain for at least 10 minutes prior to washing, longer if need be, for tougher stains. Launder as usual and watch your stains disappear! Best stain remover ever and it costs pennies to make. Another great benefit is that it’s biodegradable!
I keep a spray bottle of hydrogen peroxide in the laundry room for blood, wine and berry stains. They literally disappear as it foams.
I’ve never had any item of clothing damaged or spotted by doing so.
Thank you! I’ve been trying to get this point across 😊
Oxiclean is dry hydrogen peroxide!
“You can use any hydrogen peroxide, even the common three-percent dilution you’d buy from a drug store, directly on a fresh stain” 4 alternatives to Oxiclean
Stain remover treatment is often specific to the type of stain.
Dawn covers all the grease stains and hydrogen peroxide covers all the organic ones. That’s likely a broader range of stains than a commercial product would be effective for.
For the naysayers: Nitpick all you want, but this is an old remedy that’s proven effective. It doesn’t cause white spots on clothing and it’s a safe treatment (biodegradable too). Seriously, if you’re really bent on arguing about a stain remover, maybe you should make your own post about what’s better. I try to pass on something that’s been so great for my family and so many others …and I get nonsense here. If you don’t like this method, move on. If it doesn’t apply to your stains, move on, but don’t insert negativity about a simple remedy.
You can also make a GREAT bathroom cleaner or countertop cleaner using the same ingredients, plus water:
1 part hot water 3 drops of Dawn (swirl to mix in the Dawn) 2 parts 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
Spray your shower or bathtub after each use to keep it sparklingly clean! No need to scrub or wipe off.
beware - hydrogen peroxide will bleach your shit, yo.
noticeably.
No, it won’t. I’ve used 3% Hydrogen peroxide on all types of household materials, let it sit for 24 hours and have yet to see anything discolored. I use straight 3% hydrogen peroxide on my wood floors without ever having an unwanted reaction, too. Chlorine bleach is quite a different story though.
Only in high concentration
agreed. white vingar and white wine too. key is to dump cold water on the stain asap, if the material can handle cold water. 90% will come out in next wash if you do that.
Tooth paste , baking soda
They go away after a few washes eventually
Depends on the stain and the fabric.
Generally, an immediate hand wash of the area with cold water run through the fabric from the opposite side of the stain will help.
I’ve tried so many various stain removers for clothing and upholstery. Looking to see if anyone has any particular recommendations. For context, I am in the market right now to attempt to clear what seems to be a coffee stain from the upholstery of this office chair!
Folex and an extraction cleaner like the little green machine
Would you soak the stain in the Folex and then extract that with the green machine? Or would you dry it after the Folex and use whatever cleaner is usually inside the green machine?
Don’t soak but saturate with the Folex and work it in with a brush. Then use the green machine with just water. If that doesn’t get it all, you can do another pass with the green machine using the Bissell cleaning solution.
On white fabric, try sorrel salt (or oxalic acid), with hot water, it works very well, otherwise, injector vacuum cleaner with a car fabric cleaner, you soak, you rub, you let it act, and you vacuum, and it comes out perfect
The best secret of all is Krud Kutter cleaner/degreaser/stain remover. I am an upholsterer and it is great. I have had hot glue fall from the gun onto a chair and got it off with this without ruining the fabric. removes wax too.
OH and its food safe, non toxic and biodegradable. Can't beat it. They also sell carpet cleaner, which I use in my carptet cleaner machine or spot treat. I buy both of the products by the gallon.
I bought mid-century vinyl chair, that I thought I might have to reupholster and this product cleaned it to new condition. They sell it in most hardware stores or giant hardware stores.
warm water and full drops of mild dish soap and vinegar help to remove coffee stain and works great.
Also you need to clean the entire seat, not just the stain. Otherwise you’ll end up with a clean spot on a dirty chair! Honestly, we had ours steam cleaned when our carpets were cleaned and that worked the best.
With 2 teenage boys, I need the best stain stick or stain remover, please.
I’ve found that liquid detergents, like Tide Ultra Stain Release or Persil Liquid, when poured directly on stains works better than many pretreaters.
Something worth trying!
I have couches and carpets that will surely get stains once in a while, what’s your guys holy grail nonwash stain removal?
Spot Shot spray (in a can). Works great, essentially dry cleaning fluid in a spray can
What stain removers are people using that work well? Preference for an enzymatic stain remover as this will be for baby clothes and blowouts! I know the sun is very effective but would also like to have a stain remover option as well. I haven’t really bought any before and I’m overwhelmed by the options. Thank you!
Miss Mouth's Messy Eater Stain Treater Spray. This stuff is some SORCERY and we have one in basically every room of the house!
It truly is absolute sorcery. I found out about it from Ann Reardon. She’s a food scientist that does YT videos. She made a video testing various stain hacks against different commercial stain removers. Miss Mouths reigned supreme.

Good bot!
I hate that several influeners iNfLuEnCeD me to buy this, but yeah it truly is some sorcery.
I was lucky enough to have a friend buy me like 4 bottles as part of a baby shower gift so I never had the “shit, I don’t want to fall for this influencer crap” guilt 😂
We love Attitude as a gentler option and Puracy for tougher stains!
Puracy!
This question is asked several, times a week on this sub, if you search it, you’ll find a lot of good options
I didn’t realize, sorry! Thanks
I use a combo of oxiclean with the green lid and Dawn Power Dissolver (commercial grade product).
Is hydrogen peroxide ok to try to get the stains out or will it ruin the yellow color?
It could ruin the color, you could test a small part of the garment that is inconspicuous to see if it does anything bad. I would soak the garment overnight in a washbasin or sink with tide or dawn and then wash it like you normally would.
Best stain removers for fabric
Key Considerations for Choosing Stain Removers:
Type of Stain: Different stains (e.g., grease, wine, ink) require specific treatments. Identify the type of stain to select the most effective remover.
Fabric Compatibility: Ensure the stain remover is safe for the fabric type (cotton, polyester, silk, etc.) to avoid damage.
Formulation: Stain removers come in various forms (sprays, gels, powders). Choose one that suits your application preference.
Enzymatic Action: Look for products with enzymes that break down organic stains (like food and blood) for better effectiveness.
Eco-Friendliness: If you're concerned about chemicals, consider biodegradable or non-toxic options that are safe for the environment.
Top Recommendations:
OxiClean MaxForce: Effective on a wide range of stains, including grease and food. It’s versatile and works well on various fabrics.
Zout Laundry Stain Remover: Great for protein stains (like blood and sweat) due to its enzymatic formula. It’s safe for most fabrics.
Shout Advanced Gel: This gel formula clings to stains, making it effective for tough spots. It works well on both fresh and set-in stains.
The Laundress Stain Solution: A premium, eco-friendly option that’s safe for delicate fabrics. It’s effective on a variety of stains and has a pleasant scent.
Nature's Miracle Stain and Odor Remover: Ideal for pet stains, this enzymatic cleaner not only removes stains but also neutralizes odors.
