How to Remove Coffee Stains from Clothes

TL;DR

  • Use dish soap and cold water as a pretreatment [1:1].
  • Hydrogen peroxide mixed with blue Dawn dish soap is effective [2:1].
  • Cafiza powder can be a powerful stain remover [3].

Pretreatment Techniques

One of the most recommended methods for removing coffee stains is using dish soap, particularly blue Dawn, combined with cold water. This should be applied before washing the garment [1:1], [2:1]. The mixture can be kept in a spray bottle for easy application, and it's advised to let it sit on the stain for a few minutes before rinsing [2:6].

Using Specialized Products

Cafiza powder was highlighted as an effective solution for stubborn coffee stains, especially when other common products like Oxiclean or bleach fail [3]. Another user suggested using Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds directly on the stain, massaging it in, and letting it sit before washing [2:3].

Alternative Methods

Some users have found success with baking soda, either by itself or mixed with vinegar and dish detergent to form a paste [3:2], [4:4]. A toothbrush can be used to scrub the paste into the stain for better results [4:1].

General Tips

It's important to avoid using warm water initially, as it can set the stain. Instead, rinse or blot with cold water immediately [5:2]. After spot treating, garments can be washed with an enzymatic detergent on a delicate cycle if needed [5:2]. For linen or delicate fabrics, consider visiting a dry cleaner if home remedies don't work [5:3].

Considerations Beyond the Discussions

If these methods don't work, you might want to explore professional stain removal products specifically designed for coffee stains or consult a dry cleaning service for more delicate fabrics. Additionally, maintaining a routine of immediate stain treatment can help prevent stains from setting and becoming more difficult to remove.

ORIGINAL POST

Hi all! I’ve been a full-time barista for about a year now, and soooo much of my clothing has coffee/espresso/steamed milk/hot chocolate/etc stains on it that just won’t seem to budge.

Right now I use Dropps laundry detergent pods, but will be switching to Hey Sunday laundry sheets soon. I usually throw some Borax or Oxyclean in the drum, too. I almost always wash on warm on the heavy soil cycle. It’s hit or miss as to whether or not the stains actually come out.

I don’t have a huge wardrobe, so having separate work clothes and non work clothes isn’t super realistic for me. Besides, I’d prefer to not show up to my shifts looking crusty all the time lol.

I’ve heard good things about Zote soap bars for greasy stains? But have had trouble finding recommendations for coffee stains in particular. I’d love to know what has worked best for others on this front. Thank you for your help and advice!!

Hiii question! Can you use this on an off white colored top ? Or colored clothing ?

use it as a pretreatment before you wash your clothing - scrub hot cafiza water on the garment and let it sit for about 10 minutes and throw it into the washer, ive cleaned marble counter tops with cafiza it is absolutely a cure all.

I just always wear black clothes when working. It's great because the stains just make the clothes look more black after a few years.

dark clothes = no stains.

dawn dish soap will get rid of pretty much any food service stain.

i would also recommend thrifting to cover the dark clothing gap in your closet.

for a final boss of cleanliness, you could also just wear white and commit to not being messy 🤪

This feels like a back handed compliment! But I love coffee and spills happen.

I use Dr Bronner’s Sal Suds on coffee stains, apply directly, massage in a little to cover the whole stain and let it sit for 10 minutes (at least). It’s safe to even let it sit overnight. During the wash cycle, I add in a scoop of Oxyclean (purple lid). Drying, set out in the sun.

All works well and bonus is that the Sal Suds is odorless.

ImpressivePie7384 · 2 years ago

Oooh- thanks for this tip! I absolutely love Sal Suds because I’m weird about fragrance and have sensitive skin. I use it got general laundry and household stuff but have never tried applying it directly to stubborn stains. And I spill lots of coffee on myself…

For in-washer use I’ve had lots of success lately with Molly’s Suds Oxygen Whitener, which I guess is like an Oxyclean alternative. Works well on light coffee stains and discolored armpits on white tees.

I’m a coffee drinker. I spill. My magic stain remover is a mix of hydrogen peroxide and the blue Dawn dish soap (I’ve used other dish soaps but the blue Dawn works best for some reason). I keep it in a spray bottle and use it on everything, just let it sit for a few before washing. If you use a lot on one item, rinse twice.

Blue Dawn is amazing. It worked to remove a GIANT grease stain from my gray sweatshirt. Can't tell it ever happened.

One part Dawn to two parts hydrogen peroxide.

I would try a soak with a solution of distilled white vinegar, liquid detergent, and water.

Vinegar might make the detergent less effective due to its acidity, hence why when washing its best to add during a rinse cycle.

Tip: Easily Remove Coffee Stains From Your Clothing

Posted by vitvav · in r/espresso · 1 year ago

Why hasn’t the internet given me this easy coffee stain removal trick before? (Hint: Cafiza powder)

So I have a $100+ cotton white dress button-up shirt and want to keep it in pristine condition. I got a coffee stain on it and tried the following alongside rubbing it:

Oxiclean soak, sport removing spray (shout?), laundry detergent, etc.

Nothing worked.

I tried bar keepers friend.

Nope.

Then I tried bleach as a last resort thinking that this would do the trick. I typically avoid this as it caused my shirts to weaken and create holes the next time I took it to the dry cleaners.

Bleach did not work. Although mostly gone you can still make-out the stain if you focused in that area.

Then I took it to the dry cleaners. When the stain was not removed I asked them to try it again and to really focus on that stain.

Not even the pros could help.

Finally, as a one last final last resort I tried Cafiza espresso machine cleaner. I figured since it was literally designed to remove coffee build up in machines then it totally may work on my clothes right?

Well, I mixed it with water and rubbed it in. It came off like magic! I was blown away.

So if you have any kind of stubborn coffee stain. Don’t panic and just use a little Cafiza.

You’re welcome :)

Coffee has oils. You can use a true soap like Dr bronners or a laundry bar soap like zote. These both work for any mild oil / grease stains.

15 upvotes on reddit
VinhBlade · 26 days ago

I have a bottle of unscented Dr Bronner. Do you just recommend putting a squirt on the stain, then rubbing it vigorously, rinse, and repeat until the stain goes away?

Or let the shirt completely soak in soapy water for 10min, and then washer machine it?

Soak both garments overnight in OxiClean, and than wash it in your regular detergent with Warm Water and OxiClean. Both stains should come out.

I use GP66, spray, maybe scrub if I have time, and wash. If you've already dried the clothing in the dryer, it may be toast.

I use baking soda, vinegar, and dawn dish detergent to get rid of stains. I make a paste out of it and scrub it really well with a toothbrush. Then wash it regularly. If you try it let me know how it turns out!

If gentler options don’t work Peroxide can oxidize blood immediately & some dark color stains back to light if you let soak for no more than 5 mins and rinse it off thoroughly it shouldn’t ruin it if it is light in color already, it’s not as fast as bleach but test in a small hidden spot

ExoticOffice1284 · 5 months ago

I second peroxide for blood. I’ve used on all colors, doesn’t change the color of the garment. The fresher the better. If it’s really fresh it literally just disappears before your eyes.

Coffee? I’d use a toothbrush, Shout, and elbow grease.

Help! Coffee stain Linen

Posted by Ok_Departure1 · in r/CleaningTips · 5 months ago
post image

Heya everyone. Any tips for getting a coffee stain out of beige linen? My partner is distraught as this shirt cost a small fortune and this happened on his first time wearing it!

We’ve already tried soaking it for about an hour in warm water with laundry detergent, which has got it looking how it is now (more of an outline of a stain than a full stain).

Any tips would be greatly appreciated- though I do fear it might be done for 😭

Next time, avoid warm water with any stain in the first instance, as this can set the stain. Rinse or blot with cold water immediately instead.

Try gently rubbing in soap (a bar of pure soap suitable for laundry, or concentrated dish soap) and cold water, and then let it sit for 15-30min.

This says "hand wash", but I machine wash all of my linens - the point of them is to wear and soften. After spot treating and soaking, I would put it on a 40-60° wash with an enzymatic detergent. You can use a lower spin or delicates cycle if you'd like to have it a bit wetter for a smoother hang-dry.

If it's truly very precious, you may want to just take it to a dry cleaner, though.

Ahhh noooo that makes so much sense now that you say it. I’ll definitely remember for next time. I’m gonna try and put it in a wash, fingers crossed it works out otherwise a trip to the dry cleaner may be in order. Thank you so much for all the tips 🙏

Removing coffee stain that looks like it’s gone?

Posted by Raspberrycrumblepie · in r/laundry · 4 months ago

Hello. I accidentally spilled coffee on my jeans and I’m still struggling to remove the stain. I immediately did a spot treatment with bar soap and let it sit for a bit before rinsing and putting it with my laundry, that didn’t work. And then I used a stain remover (resolve) and let it sit + hand scrubbing with dish soap and put it with a load of laundry and now it looks like this. Idk if this is a soap stain or what but it no longer has the faint brown tinge of the coffee stain and instead looks splotchy or maybe I’ve spread it out so I’m worried I’ve made it worse?? If anyone knows how to fix this please please help me save my favourite jeans 😞😞😞

Looking closer it looks like you've removed whatever the manufacturers put on to create that stonewashed effect. The dark patch is just dark...like you've washed the whitish off.

I'd be tempted to scrub. The whole pair in dawn to try to even it out.

If it's fresh just run water over it until it's gone. If it's a bit older, liquid washing soap or dish soap can help. Mix with a little water and gently rub it on the stain, then soak in water and repeat if needed. Air dry.

Old coffee stains on clothes? Please help!

Posted by chalodarling · in r/CleaningTips · 3 years ago

Hello,

I have recently found some very much-loved clothes from my university days, but unfortunately lots of these items feature small coffee stains down the front (very noticeable, engineering degree problems). These stains are ~5 years old so very much not fresh. They’re on a mixture of materials, including a regular skirt, a woolly blazer, a part-cashmere cardigan etc

Is there any trick or product that can help reduce or remove this staining? I have access to UK products but willing to try any method. I would like to reuse if I can and will likely dye them black if I cannot remove the stains.

Any advice is much appreciated! TIA.

You don't want to go extreme hot or cold. Pat with warm or cool water. Pat, not rub. If you can get soda water, even better.

Get it in the wash ASAP. You want to put one of those stain fighting sprays on it, or some Oxyclean/detergent paste you make. And scrub it on in there. You can also put some regular detergent on and scrub it in, in a pinch. Or just pour bleach on it directly.

Wash in warm water with detergent and bleach.

Pray.

You know, Tide sells this Tide Stick. It's, really expensive. BUT, it really works. I mean, really works, really well. If I accidentally get a bit of coffee on myself, even on a white shirt, and then use that immediately, before doing anything else, and then let it dry. It works. It will save that white shirt.

How to remove coffee stains from clothes

Here are some effective steps to remove coffee stains from clothes:

  1. Act Quickly: The sooner you treat the stain, the better. Blot the stain with a clean cloth or paper towel to absorb as much coffee as possible.

  2. Cold Water Rinse: Rinse the stained area under cold running water. Make sure to do this from the back of the fabric to push the stain out rather than deeper into the fibers.

  3. Pre-Treat the Stain:

    • Liquid Laundry Detergent: Apply a small amount of liquid laundry detergent directly to the stain and gently rub it in. Let it sit for about 5 minutes.
    • Vinegar Solution: Alternatively, mix one part white vinegar with one part water and apply it to the stain. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
  4. Wash the Garment: After pre-treating, wash the garment in the hottest water safe for the fabric (check the care label).

  5. Check Before Drying: Before putting the item in the dryer, check if the stain is completely gone. Heat can set the stain. If it remains, repeat the pre-treatment and washing steps.

  6. Use Stain Remover (if needed): If the stain persists, consider using a commercial stain remover according to the product instructions.

Tip: Always test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area of the fabric first to ensure it doesn’t cause damage or discoloration.
