Hi friends! I'm on the hunt for a good story rich game to sink my teeth into. I'm a huge fan of well written characters. Voice acting is a plus but not necessary. Unravelling a mystery is a blast too.
Previously Enjoyed Games:
Disco Elysium (amazing world and story)
Guardians of the Galaxy (loved the characters and voice acting)
Sleeping dogs (Jackie <3)
Cyberpunk (Jackie again <3) ((is this name cursed? poor Jackies))
Hades
Preferred Genres:
any but not big on JRPG or anime stuff (persona was an exception)
Budget:
Any
Other Notes:
I'm open to older games too.
Just bought but haven't played:
Outer Wilds
Alan Wake 1
Open to suggestions! I've played the Personas and everything Bethesda as well.
Edit:
This community is the absolute best. Thanks so much for the recommendations everyone :)
I've just listed story-driven games that I’ve played and found significant. Most of them were played on PC, with only a few on the Steam Deck, like Baldur's Gate 3. I'm not really into streaming because I can't stand the stuttering.
just know that the horizon games are incredibly overrated and have some of the worst writing and characters in gaming. If you like giant exposition dumps and convenient story beats, basically crayon eating writers stuff, have at it.
death stranding 1&2, any other Kojima game, Remedy's games, the Witcher 3 to some extent, Prey 2017 - - shoot for those.
I'd suggest
Old but Gold:
Epic:
Go ahead with Alan Wake, you'll like it!
Great list thank you! I should have included kotor 1 and 2 in my list. Some of my all time favourites!
Mass effect is an absolute must play
It's both. The game is gorgeous, the music is award winning, and the story is a rollercoaster (it'll make you laugh, make you care, and then wring out your heart and hang it up to dry). Gameplay is a nice mix of turn based with rage-inducingly tight parry windows, but when you get it right it's satisfying. The world is medium and full of areas and side content to explore that fills in more of the world and lore and more context for story.
Don't look up anything until you finish the game. No spoilers.
Edit: I'm realizing this is the Deck subreddit. This game, from what I've heard, might be a bit much for the Deck. I played it on PlayStation, so amazing game, but ymmv on Deck.
The wolf among us. Always a classic.
I also loved the Batman games from Telltale.
Oh and do recommend Tales from the Borderlands!
Horizon zero dawn
This is one of the only 2 games in the past decade where I was excited to read through any and all datalogs and lore the game threw at me. It was that good of a read.
The other one was Subnautica and it's a masterpiece in its own right.
I’ll stop you right there. This game is an actual masterpiece. I don’t say that lightly. You’re talking about a compelling story? This game has so much. The story is literally in a league of its own. I teared up multiple times.
The gameplay is complex but accessible.
The music is beautiful.
Did I mention how unique the story is? I’ve never come across something like this outside of an actual book.
I cannot recommend any other game over this one for story. You are doing yourself a disservice by not playing it. I wish I could go back and play it over again for the first time.
As someone who recently finished Spiritfarer, I vote for this. It was interesting to piece each information as you send a spirit off or bring them aboard, talk to them and watch as their dialogue changes (when they open up to you). It’s not as story driven as LIS but I think it falls under the same genre of story driven!
Totally agree. I really wish to have all the achievements in this beautiful game, but don't think I can go through this game again...
To the Moon and Finding Paradise! Incredibly cathartic if you're in the mood for a game that makes you cry.
Special mention to Rakuen, which was made by the composer who wrote 'Everythings Alright' and 'Wish My Life Away', both songs featured in those aforementioned games. Beautiful soundtracks for all of them.
This! And Imposter Factory was nice as well! :)
Oh, definitely! I haven't played it yet, so that's the only reason I left it off the list.
Agreed! There is also 'A Bird Story' which is kinda a prequel to Finding Paradise.
Rakuten made me sob uncontrollably
Beacon pines hits the spot immensely but I felt the ending was so...lacklustre? Didn't stop me from loving the overall game though
Oxenfree ❤️
Definitely this. Loved it. I think I own it on like 4 platforms at this point.
First game I ever got all the achievements on :)
Detroit: Become Human, hands down.
Honourable mention to the lore in Hollow Knight
I'm lloking for story driven game to play. I've played all the main ones. Can you recommend any.
Last of us closely followed by red dead 1.
Finished last of us 1/2 today. Amazing story
Mass Effect! :)
This is one of the most vast and interesting universes ever created in Sci-Fi. It’s fun to play and interact with from start to finish.
The ending is admittedly a bit weak, but I just save the Citadel DLC until after I finish ME3, and have that be the real ending, for me.
Red Dead Redemption 2 definitely! Very powerful stuff.
good recommendation. OP did say all the main ones though, i would expect RDR2 to be apart of that group
Just one of the many people who came here to say this. Masterpiece and it will take you over 200+ hours to see, experience and complete everything there is to complete in the game. So big that there are still some people who argue there is more out there to discover in RDR2.
Anyone disagreeing with you is wrong, RDR2 changed the way I see games.
Tried playing it a couple of times. But didn’t go too far into the story. Does it take time to grow on you? I’ve always heard great reviews but can’t seem to shake off the feeling that it felt like a drag in beginning. No offence to RDR fans.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (got the Next-Gen update and new free content recently too)
Blood and wine 🍷
What remains of Edith Finch is a masterpiece when it comes to story telling. Its pretty short too. Two hours tops
Hey everyone! I’m the kind of player who values story above all else when it comes to games. I’ve played a lot—too many to list—but I’m on the hunt for new recommendations that will really pull me in emotionally.
I’m looking for narratives on the level of Red Dead Redemption 2, The Last of Us (1 & 2), God of War, etc. Indie games are more than welcome, too!
One request though—please keep it spoiler-free. Any recommendation can help, thanks!
Red Dead Redemption (1 & 2)
Far Cry 3
The Witcher Series
Baldurs Gate 3
Kingdom Come : Deliverance (1 & 2, tbf haven't finished 2)
Cyberpunk 2077
Knights of the Old Republic
Telltale games/The Quarry/Until Dawn
I would say that Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 had an even better story.
Ghost of Tsushima was one of the better story mode games I’ve played in a long while. The liberation RPG style they use is a little recycled, but the combat is awesome and I felt like I was watching a damn good movie following the story. There’s a sequel coming out this year too if you end up liking the first.
Yup, it’s not the kind of blockbuster narrative that you get from those Sony first party titles, but this is a game that literally changed how I think about life and death and our place in the universe, and it has some of the most beautiful music ever. It’s worth the effort to figure out the puzzles and solve the riddles and I wish I could wipe my memory and play it again.
The Mass Effect trilogy. Its like playing a character in a movie series, except you are directing it too.
This 1000%.
I recently did a 1-3 all achievement play through with the continuous saves, and it was an amazing experience.
Absolutely unparalleled series in terms of many things, but story in particular.
I would not say it is the story that is that good, it is the steps to uncovering it and how much mystery it is shrouded in. If it was just read out to you it wouldn't sound that stellar on paper. Fantastic game though, in my top 10.
The buildup to each discovery is what makes the game, I'd argue it stands on its own as a story that could be told a little better than you give it credit for, but the bond between the Story, the gameplay, and the player, is what makes it so special for sure. It trusts that you'll get attached to big reveals and discoveries. It never urges you to feel a certain way, maybe a bit of music nudging you towards an emotion, but you make all the judements and relfection yourself. Big moments might be small to some, and other tiny details might break your heart while others overlook it.
The only constant is the ending, the ending is always good.
I think Zero Dawn story was too good. Once you piece together the mystery, there's no way to match the intrigue imo. I thought Forbidden West was fine and the improvements to the gameplay made it well worth playing.
I would also chuck SOMA onto that list too. That game had me needing a minute to myself to digest what the hell I just played
Zero Dawn’s story was a little fluffy but the sci fi twists and mystery of the apocalypse of it were well done.
Forbidden West’s writing felt like toothless childish garbage, the writers were playing it really really safe imo. The characters and story feel so corporate and uninteresting.
Horizon: Zero Dawn has one of the best stories in any video game I’ve ever played. Forbidden West, the sequel, continues the story and is also good but Zero Dawn was just jaw-dropping good.
I recently started my journey into JRPGs. I finished metaphor recently and enjoyed it a lot. But the story and the characters were very disappointing. I’m playing Tales of Berseria now and the characters are cool, but the overall story doesn’t really grab me yet. I REALLY want to play a game that will have me either at the edge of my seat or bawling my eyes out. I want it to just grab me and not let go. And it would be nice if gameplay is fun as well :) I played Persona 3/5, Fire Emblem Three Houses, Engage and that’s, with the previously mentioned games, about my whole catalog. But a friend told me basically the whole plot of FFX, and FFVII, since I didn’t think that I would ever make my way to the genre, so I sadly can’t experience them for the first time. Small pet peeve - I would really appreciate if you could recommend games from PS2 era and newer that I won’t need to emulate, since I’m new to the genre and don’t feel like I’m really ready for the older stuff cause of the visuals and QOL stuff. I know that Chrono trigger, Xenosaga and such are considered masterpieces but just let me make my way to them on my own time :) So yeah, I would be really grateful for some recommendations. I have access to PC and Switch. Thanks in advance! TL;DR: I want a game with an amazing story, characters and fun gameplay from PS2 era upwards
The Xenosaga trilogy. Outstanding story if you stick through it all.
Man, I gotta disagree with this recommendation. The wrap up with Xenosaga 3 is incredible but the second game switches directors and lacks the narrative confidence of the other two. Also, while 3 miraculously wraps up the story of the saga, this was planned as a six part series so you’re playing a truncated version. Finally, these games were never ported and are locked to the PS2.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is the makers of Xenosaga at the height of their powers and tells a complete story. I’d go with that
Trails in the Sky Trilogy, Final Fantasy IX and Nier Automata are must-plays IMO.
Second Nier Automata - the story and experience are unlike anything else out there.
Nier:Automata will leave you in an existential crisis questioning your humanity or an emotional mess by the end. Probably both. 10/10 would recommend.
definitely trails! trails in the sky is a good place to start. it’s slow but it pays off. the character dialogue is everything!
I agree...that was my pick for best JRPG story I've played
I think it's one thing to just be told a story. But definitely another thing to experience it for yourself. You'll go on an adventure with the characters, bond with them, experience their struggles and help overcome them. You'll be given a whole lot more context to things whoch may make you feel deeper emotions to certain plot points. You'll actually hear their voices, know their story. And my god, the music. The music will make you truly dive deep into the story in a way that your friend just telling you the plot could never.
Not to mention, studies have proven that people most remember the beginning and ending to stories. So i' going to bet that whatever your friend explained, they gave you a lot of detail about the start of the games and end of them, but missed a lot of details of the mid game.
I second 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim! The story is really unique and AWESOME!
I was bawling my eyes out at final scene of Xenoblade 3, definitely worth to play it.
I know what you mean, but I think the mark of a great story is when you can experience it many times, and the impact of the story stays the same (or even better, improves). I think FFX is one of those stories. If a story’s being good just depends on surprising twists or things that can be spoiled, then I would argue it’s not a very good story. Just my two cents!
I second this! Especially Xenoblade 1 and 3. For X1, I was constantly thrown off by the plot twists which were paced well. X3 has a pretty unique story where kids are gaslit all throughout their lives.
I've been in a bit of a slump with finding new games lately, and I've been pretty unsuccessful in looking for other games myself. Generally, what I'm looking for is an rpg with good writing; characters grow and feel dynamic, the plot is compelling, and overall, the writing-centric moments within the game elevate it.
I say these things because I've played a ton of jrpg's where the story feels tangential to the experience of the game. Whether its an over reliance on the typical tropes, or a lack of interest to actually write something interesting beyond some surface level characters and a big bad, I feel like many jrpgs end up with stories that feel like rehashed drivel; the same characters and plots and moments that I've seen countless times before.
Examples of games that scratch this itch for me:
-Chrono Trigger: my favorite jrpg to date and the one I have revisited the most. hopefully self explanitory.
-Dragon Quest 5: a childhood classic for me, but even after revisiting it as an adult I found myself consistently impressed with the writing of the game. I love how all of the losses build up to culminate into this incredible sense of appreciation for when the characters eventually triumph
-Yakuza: Like a Dragon: a surprising pick for me, I found myself oddly attached to a lot of these characters quickly, and it drive me to binge the whole game. Arakawa pretty much had me hooked on the story and characters immediately.
Examples of games that miss the mark:
-Metaphor: a game that impressed me in the beginning, lost some steam in the middle, and fell off a cliff by the end. I found the main party cast to be about as generic as they come (8 good guys drawn together by a special connection with the leaders kind spirit oh wow) and the main villain, despite showing signs of interesting writing throughout the game, eventually devolved into "only strength matters and I'm gonna kill everybody". Not poorly written, but by the end the writing hardly elevates it.
-Octopath 2: a game I fuck with heavily for its soundtrack and job system, but I'm putting it here because it pretty much perfectly describes what I'm trying to avoid right now: a game with incredible surrounding bits, with a narrative that feels like an afterthought. The characters, and what little overarching plot there is, exist only as a medium for you to experience the cooler stuff like the combat and banging soundtrack.
-Sea of Stars: despite overwhelming community reccomendations I quite disliked this game and had a really hard time latching on to it. hits all the same notes as the past games with an emphasis on "over reliance on tropes". Some of this games characters literally wouldn't exist if you stripped away their referencing of tropes or cheesy irony.
Thats about all I got, and I'm open to any recommendations. Prefer PC but can play on any platform if its a banger.
Best written will always be Final Fantasy Tactics and Xenogears in my eyes.
Good story and even good game doesn't necessarily mean good writing. I love the story and gameplay of most of the Final Fantasy games but I wouldn't say they are well written, most of them are very clunky and contrived writing wise.
Expedition 33.
What a phenomenal game in every single regard, including writing.
It has game of the DECADE potential.
Nope.
But people will also tell you that Dark Souls is not a JRPG and that Nier Automata is.
Fire Emblem Path of Radiance
Growlanser IV
Devil Survivor
Yeah, that statement is a bit wild (still had to upvote because it was the 33rd vote). I do think it does have what a lot of jrpg's lack, good writing (or good localization).
Nier Replicant and Automata. No other games come close to their type of storytelling, and it's definitely unique.
I absolutely love both, but are they even JRPGs? They are more hacknslash action rpgs
>>Japanese
>>Anime
>>RPG
Why do people question Nier being JRPGs so much?
By the literal definition yeah. Japanese developer, story with multiple endings, stat progression, etc.
Final Fantasy X is what you want bro
"Listen to my story. This.. might be our last chance."
I actually prefer DS2 but general consensus is that DS1 is better.
DS1 has the better story, but I just liked the characters in DS2 more.
They're both fantastic and you can't go wrong with either. I recommend both.
You know, the type of game that you wake up at 11:00 and by 17:00 you're still playing it and didn't even realized how much time has passed.
Not sure what your system is, but some recent suggestions are:
Hope this helps a bit!
I agree wholeheartedly with Nier Automata. It has been a long time since I was so captivated by a game. Both the main plot and the side quests offer deep world building while bringing some clever humor with it.
It also has the plus of being on basically every platform out at the moment (besides switch I believe?)
Personally (pun not intended), I think the story at Persona 5 is pretty poor and lazy, but all the other aspects of the game are awesome and completely compensate that lack.
Second for W3 and Pillars. I have hundreds of hours combined between the two, and I'm working on Pillars 2 right now and loving it.
I really need to try out Deadfire! It seems so good. I've got to finish up the original game soon though!
The Witcher 3 despite being an open world game is heavily story driven, and even minor side-quests have excellent writing and great pacing. The game can last well past 100 hours and has tons of excellent tales within it.
If you like dark fantasy then it's not to be missed.
Bioshock Infinite, one of those stories that is so good it'll leave you feeling empty after you finish it. You also don't have to play the first Bioshock to enjoy it (although that in itself is also a fantastic game).
you're right, great game! however I have played it before, should have made a list of the most obvious ones I have played. Thanks for the time still
Life is Strange! One of the all time best Story games imo.
While Life is Strange is very good and i agree with this suggestion, if you start playing it at 11.00, you'll almost be done by 17.00 :D
It took me about 10 hours of playtime. I wasn't rushing by any means but I wasn't trying to complete everything.
Life is Strange is an absolutely excellent story based game but it's very heavy emotionally. I couldn't play more than a chapter every couple days because it was a LOT to process.
Any game by telltale (especially the walking dead, game of thrones, batman )
Hey everyone! I’m the kind of player who values story above all else when it comes to games. I’ve played a lot—too many to list—but I’m on the hunt for new recommendations that will really pull me in emotionally.
I’m looking for narratives on the level of Red Dead Redemption 2, The Last of Us (1 & 2), God of War, etc. Indie games are more than welcome, too!
One request though—please keep it spoiler-free. Any recommendation can help, thanks!
I remember playing Mass Effect 1 and during one of the earliest scenes I realized it felt like playing my own space drama. Definitely need to play through the trilogy at least once if you haven't!
Let’s see (to not repeat others’ suggestions): „What Remains of Edith Fintch” - sad story about a family - but there’s some funny bits too (tragicomedy of life…); „Night in the Woods” - cozy story, funny, but also with topics of mental illness, relationships, poverty & other bad situations etc; „Goodbye Volcano High” - warm & clever emotional story about friendship and changes (also impending doom); „Disco Elysium” - a lot of reading - but modern classic! Highly recommended!; „Spiritfarer” - about death & relations with people - but it also has a lot of gameplay stuff to do (resources to collect and process & items and food to manufacture etc); IDK if „Mafia Definitive Edition” counts - it’s not very emotional really- but it’s considered best video game mob plot.; „Horizon” series does have good plot - but it get less emotional because of doing side content dilutes it (I like it very much - but you know… for pure emotions I wouldn’t choose it).
An oddball story for sure, but What Remains of Edith Finch? had some really beautiful parts. The son who worked in the fish canning factory was one of the most unique ways to tell an immersive interactive story I’ve ever seen. Controlling the adventure in his head with one stick and his mindless soul crushing job with the other stick was heart wrenching for me.
Was scrolling looking for horizon! The story really pulled me in which is saying a lot because I didn’t play it for the longest time thinking it looked stupid and now that I’ve played them they are some of my favorite games ever
Disco Elysium. Don't read anything about it. Just play it. Trust me.
I would note that while the story is great, the gameplay is drastically different than the games OP mentioned. Just wanted to throw it out there because diving into Disco after a recommendation based on The Last of Us made for a negative experience for me personally (at least initially).
I love Disco Elysium haha, but I appreciate you looking out for me! As I said, too many games to mention. I more or less put those game up there as a reference to the level of story depth I’m looking for.
Definitely. Disco is a CRPG (think point and click), narrative driven, limited action game. But the story/story-telling is next to none
Absolutely. By the time you reach the third game you genuinely feel like you crafted your own story from the decisions you made in the first two games. Absolutely phenomenal
It’s the closest thing I have felt to Babylon 5 since it ended.
It’s like 3 seasons worth of story, and I mean just the main story/character quests/DLC, not all the side missions.
And you can direct it towards a path you want to on top.
Emily is Away
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
Gris
It's a really good story. Often I don't care too much but that game always had me wanting more
What are the best story driven games? I really enjoy great stories and narratives in games with well written and acted characters. I like in depth choices if it’s an rpg, and if it’s not I just want it to feel like an incredibly well written tv series or movie. I can also dig some fascinating and in depth lore, and just good gameplay in general, although if the story is good enough, that isn’t necessary. I’m open to any genre, as long as it tells a good story or just makes you FEEL something afterwards, so you’re left with a lasting impression of the game, something i feel like every game should strive to do. I’d appreciate any help! (P.S all I have all current gen platforms available to me, those being switch, ps5, series s, and pc, so go crazy with recommendations!)
He's asking for well written and developed characters, that make you feel something, which this story did more than any other game for me, OP would certainly enjoy it

Was hoping to see Ori on here. I couldn’t play any other games for a month after finishing Will of the wisps because the story hit me so hard. And that Dsrk Cloud mention brings back some memories. HD remake please. I’d even just take a steam release.
While I played most of the games mentioned and I think they are great, list spam kind of sucks
I would add Bioshock 2 and Infinite all 3 games have something to offer. And i feel that Horizon is the most underrated of story driven open world games. Got overshaddowed by Breath of the wild with the first and Elden Ring with the second
Red dead redemption 2, The last of us, cyberpunk 2077, horizon zero dawn and forbidden west, god of war 2016 and ragnorok.
this is the definition of rdr2
I slept on this game for way too long. Bought it years ago and decided to play it just a month ago.
And I had an absolute blast. I loved the game so much that after my first playthrough, I went right into the second. I tried to play another game after (RE4 Remake, which is great and all) but it just made me miss RDR2 more.
Sounds like you're looking for Disco Elysium
Best novel I ever played
What ending did you get the first time you played it?
Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s got everything you need done to perfection.
Hey all, I got into videogames over the last few years and I’m looking for some recommendations. I’m more into single player story driven games like the Witcher, telltales waking dead, tomb raider and horizon zero dawn.
Undertale/Deltarune
Night in the Woods
Lisa the Painful
Firewatch
Nier Automata
OP, these. Master classes in story driven games, all of them. Undertale/Deltarune have an RPG style element with combat included, the rest are more straightforward walking sims with the occasional puzzle or mini game or action.
Dishonored. The first in the series is my favorite, as well as its DLC
My favorite game in life
Just finished INDIANA JONES AND THE GREAT CIRCLE a couple months ago and it was fantastic. I enjoyed every minute of it. And the story was great; it literally felt like I was living an Indiana Jones movie. Could have just as easily been a movie script. Also; great gameplay, extremely fun sneaking up on Nazis and killing them with all different things, good puzzles, beautiful world, etc. Just an overall great game. As you can obviously tell, I highly recommend it..
I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would, it really took me places. It got rather surreal for me in the end because I have spent one year stationed at >!the Ziggurat of Ur, in Iraq!< and have stood on top of it myself, so that was something to be there in the game.
That's crazy; I bet that was a trip
I will never not recommend Disco Elysium. The devs have encouraged pirating it, seeing as it was pretty much stolen from underneath them.
I’ve read into some of that drama and it’s kinda crazy. Also played it and I agree it’s a great game but thank you for the recommendation
If you liked Telltale's The Walking Dead, I'd highly recommend Detroit Become Human, Until Dawn, and Scarlet Hollow.
My personal story-driven favorites:
I have been forcing To the Moon upon people every chance I get for years. It makes me so happy when I see others recommending it as well! It's so beautiful.
Me too! You have played the sequels right?
