TL;DR
UWorld
UWorld is frequently mentioned as the top choice for ABIM preparation due to its well-written questions and detailed explanations. Many users have emphasized that UWorld closely resembles the actual exam format [2:1]
[2:4]. It is particularly favored for the final months of study to hone test-taking skills
[2:9].
MKSAP
MKSAP is another popular resource, known for providing a broad base of medical knowledge. However, some users find it more esoteric compared to UWorld [2:3]. Combining MKSAP with UWorld is suggested by several commenters, although cost considerations may lead some to choose one over the other
[2:6]. Annotating into MKSAP materials has worked well for some individuals who prefer integrating notes directly into their study books
[3:5].
Anki Decks
Anki flashcards are highlighted as an effective tool for memorization, especially for those who learn best through repetition [4:1]. Updated Anki decks that incorporate diagrams from UWorld and AMBOSS can provide a structured approach to learning
[4]. Sharing and updating these decks within the community can enhance the collective study experience.
Additional Resources
Some users also recommend attending in-person courses to supplement self-study [2:7]. Medstudy was mentioned as an alternative to MKSAP and UWorld, though opinions on its effectiveness vary
[5]. For annotating purposes, Board Basics books were used by some, despite mixed reviews on their organization
[3:4].
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
While UWorld and MKSAP are the most frequently recommended resources, it's important to consider personal learning styles when choosing study materials. Some individuals may benefit from interactive question banks, while others might prefer structured textbooks or flashcards. Additionally, leveraging residency-provided resources and CME funds can help offset costs associated with purchasing multiple study guides.
Note: I was not paid for any of this and this is not suggesting what to buy, I just know when I wanted to look at others opinions of review sources, I couldn't find a very good thorough review of anything.
I wanted to share my opinions on some study materials I used for the exam this year and provide some comments on the quality of items tested as people start buying study materials for their certification exam.
Note: I am not good at studying simply by reading, I am more of a do questions/flash cards to keep information focused, but I do discuss the books below.

*Denotes material I did not finish during my review for my exam, only my impressions
YMMV, only use things you feel like would work for you!
What would I personally consider going back:
3 years out: I would honestly just get a basic set of review questions or flash cards, too busy to do detailed study this far out and would not recommend using any of the major 3 Qbanks yet as people inherently remember the questions on their second time through and not necessarily why they know the material. Can give a false sense of security. Probably something like NEJM Knowledge+ to do targeted review if I was to get anything not provided by my residency or flash cards.
2 years out: Depends on your learning style, I would recommend something Anki style; whether that be NEJM Knowledge+ or taking notes from Medstudy/MKSAP/UW and turning them into Anki review material. Consider reviewing the MKSAP Board Basics book if you are not a huge reader, otherwise would recommend reading the Medstudy books for focused exam material rather than a slimmed down Harrison's like MKSAP.
1 year out: Uworld and MKSAP; getting through both Qbanks. Or choose another QBank, there are many more out there. Those are just sort of the front runners for "Gold Standard" when discussed among peers.
6 Months: Questions, Questions, Questions. Personally I need something that I haven't done before, so I would consider a different Q bank over doing the same one again, but that works for some people.
Hopefully this helps some people going forward!
Thanks for spending time to compile this!
Happy to help, only reason it was not as widely noticed was due to a moderator block for 2 days, which I assume was concern if I was advertising any products. Regardless it is resolved. Hopefully those who are interested will think to search for it, not going to repost it as I did not do it for the Reddit karma anyway.
Thank you so much for crafting this post. This is exactly what I was looking for! 👍
Thanks. This is great.
Could you share the PDF or any files you have available that you think might be useful?
Could you share the PDF or any files you have available that you think might be useful?
Thanks for this
I used medstudy and did not pass. I was close to passing, but now need to take it again. I was wondering what the best study material is. Thank you!
Uworld is the closest thing to ABIM IMHO
Uworld Uworld Uworld Uworld. MKSAP is good, but can be esoteric in terms of knowledge tested. Uworld is very well written. TBH, the actual exam felt like they didn’t put much effort into it. Soooo many spelling mistakes
As others have said, if I had to choose one it would be UWorld every time. I almost didn’t do it (I had done MKSAP twice) but I wouldn’t have scored as high without UWorld.
Thank you so much! I’ve seen many suggest a combination of MKSAP and Uworld, but I can’t justify paying for both because they are both expensive. Do you think it’s best to combine both, or just stick to one?
I’d do uworld personally if I had to pick one. Do it once, do a reset and go through it again, you should be fine.
If someone held a gun to my head and said "choose one", it would be uworld because the explanations are good. But I kinda thought the questions were a little more simplistic like MKSAP. Personally, I'd do a pass of MKSAP for knowledge and then Uworld for test prep the last 1-2 months. Maybe you can find the books cheap somewhere? Passed ABIM first try this year.
UWorld. Made anki cards.
Uworld. MKSAP. Do an in person course.
It's just how my brain works, I need to annotate into a book to code it into memory. Back in the day the USMLE First Aid books were perfect for this. I'll never read the book (but would help if its well organized into sections), I won't reread my notes. For whatever reason this works for me.
I have older Boards Basics books (18 or 19?) but they would not be good for this. Don't know how to describe it, it just isn't organized well and isn't detailed enough. Edit: I’ve put in a good faith effort with annotating into boards basics but it just isn’t working out so looking for reccs that are not Boards Basics.
A quick google search turned up the hopkins, mayo, and imedicine review books.
p.s. initial certification
I do the same thing and I did it with the Board Basics book that was for that year, it worked out great! I annotated stuff from MKSAP answers and uworld. It became my bible
Doesn’t MKSAP have a bunch of books that go with it? It’s been a few years since I took it so I don’t remember.
Yes, I have those along with the boards basics books. For some reason any official mksap related study materials just don't jive with my brain. Wish they did though, life would be easier
I think, latest mksap is only online version
I got the Mksap board basics book and annotated into it
Boards Basics + UWorld + MKSAP questions to supplement weak areas
There’s always Harrison’s 🙃
How does one even study for ABIM? I thought it was just do uworld where you realize you learned absolutely nothing during residency and are now learning what is supposed to have so you can take ABIM then continue not really using your learned information in real practice
I just took ABIM on tuesday, it was uhhh interesting to say the least. I took the deck that u/endersawakening made and edited it quite a bit. It was a great starting point, but I made the cards more digestible / less info per card. I added diagrams from uworld and AMBOSS, but I did not get through all the cards. Someone continue the legacy and finish the deck.
Here is the link to the deck, and I included a photo of all the add ons I have, not sure if that matters.

Add ons:
Was the deck helpful for the exam?
Very much so for me, Anki is how I learn best so I can’t speak to how it will apply to other people. There are a lot of facts we have to memorize and this is the best way for me to learn them.
The new deck flair automatically 'stickies' a post. This is so all users have a better chance of noticing new or updated Anki decks. Hello everyone,
First time posting, was gearing up to study for ABIM in August (apparently it is still happening), and was wondering what people have used within the last year or two who have taken it. I matched pulm-cc in December so really want to past this the first time.
Our IM Residency has bought us MKSAP 18, but I have $500 CME dollars left over, which I planned on using on either Medstudy or UWorld.
What are peoples preferences for studying, does any of the above methods prove more reliable for passing then others?
Honestly just trying to get a feel for what to do.

Hope everyone is having a great start to their week!
Still a PGY-2, but some of my seniors recommended UWorld in addition to MKSAP.
Congrats on the match. I used only mksap. One person I know used uworld and thought it was better than mksap. Honestly the pass rate is pretty high and it's not that bad of a test.
Anyone know if there is a sweet spot for MKSAP over which you can feel better about passing?
Preping as well, and I am wondering about the same questions you have. I was gonna post this:
Other than Uworld, and MKSAP questions, any insight for ABIM prep? Are these qbanks enough? How is the test difficulty compared to uworld or MKSAP?
Upcoming PGY-3, I want to start studying for ABIM boards and upcoming IMITE as I a not the best test taker. Historically I learn best with a video lecture series (similar to BnB) in medical school for test. Are there any resources like that I can use for ABIM and IMITE?
See the Cleveland clinic BR videos. They are 99$ with a letter of you being a resident.
Hi! I’m not finding this anywhere, do you have a link? Thank you
The only video type thing I’ve heard of is med study but it’s pretty expensive
Awesome board review. You won’t regret it.
I felt this was over rated and hyped. I attended this and did not feel I got my money's worth.
Did you study his two books after the course? Because it was very helpful for me essentially cramming at the very end of pgy3 including uworld
Hi! For those who have done the ABOM certification, any tips or best resources recommendations? Thanks.
Hi. Did you take the abom cert? If so could you provide any resources you recommend using to prepare for the test?
Hi, not yet. Hopefully taking it next month. So far I did the Columbia course, harvard 1 day review and I am doing both question books written by Dr. Smith.
I’m thinking of doing the exact same thing as you. Did you feel it was sufficient for the exam?
There is a facebook group called "Evidence-Based Obesity Medicine Practices." Would join that group and search the group for this topic, it comes up a lot and they have excellent recommendations. I bought a year's long membership to the Obesity Medicine Association plus their year long access to all of their recorded materials - doing the hours of CME here. On top of that, I'll be doing a few of the review books recommended in that group and possibly the Harvard Blackburn course.
Thank you! Will search for it.
Columbia has a good course. Took it and passed the test a few months ago.
Thank you, will look into it. Did it fullfill the cme as well?
Yup
Hello Everyone,
I’m a PGY-3 starting board prep for August. What do you guys recommend ; uworld, mksap, and Awesome Review?
Kindly let me know which resources to focus on!
Stay away from awesome, it was useless in my opinion. MKSAP AND UW are enough. Amboss also was a good resource
Thank you
MKSAP is plenty - not just the questions, but also spend time with the syllabus and Board Basics that comes with it. Add world if you have extra money and time but really you don’t have to do more if you’re doing fine in training and reading as necessary to take care of your patients. Avoid Awesome (it’s not awesome, and not taught by content experts) but if you’re really wanting to take a course then check out the live, virtual, and recorded versions offered by ACP https://www.acponline.org/meetings-courses/acp-courses-recordings/internal-medicine-board-review-courses
Whatd you end up doing? I’ve only been using MKSAP this summer so you recommend dropping $500 on Uworld a month away from exam?
72% correct first pass MKSAP but won’t have time for second just incorrects
Uworld all u need
Thank you. That’s what I’m thinking to do :)
Hello everyone,
I’m looking for a dedicated study partner for the ABIM exam in mid-August. If you’re interested, please feel free to reach out to me at Futurelovely2018@gmail.com.
Thanks and good luck to all!
Hey friends! Wanted to pay it forward and help someone who is prepping for ABIM currently. UWORLD was absolutely the best (and my only lol) study resource and I'm done with the test. I have my subscription available until 9/8 so please DM me and I can share my login info with whoever reaches out first. This subreddit has been a lifesaver for me as I've prepared for boards and my first hospitalist job so just wanna pay it forward!
Hey! What did you think of the exam? Is doing only UW fine? Are there any murmur questions on the exam that require listening? Thanks!
hi, can you please share with me? I am in need. thank you
A bit late to start with Uworld
Not late for me a new PGY3
But the subscription runs in out in 2 weeks lol
How did you feel about the exam?! What should I cram in my last 2 days lol
ACP vs awesome review? I did medstudy last year but want to try something new this year
I have done board basics 2x Med study flash cards Uworld 1x, doing it again now 1/2 mksap
Failed Abim last year
What should I do? Taking boards in end of august and very stressed out.
What was ur score last year?
I failed by 6 points from passing scofe
You will pass this year
Did ACP before, board basic x 3 readings and MKSAP.. look at previous results for weaknesess..focus on few resources and master your resources
