TL;DR
Maui Jim Sunglasses
Maui Jim sunglasses are frequently praised across discussions for their exceptional lens quality and comfort. Users highlight their lightweight design, making them ideal for long drives without causing fatigue [1:1]
[2:1]
[4:2]. They also have a lifetime warranty on frames, which adds value to your investment
[4:4]. However, some users note that polarized lenses may not be compatible with heads-up displays (HUDs) in certain vehicles
[1:7].
Serengeti Drivers
Serengeti Drivers are another top recommendation for driving sunglasses. These glasses are specifically designed for driving, with lenses that reduce tint on the lower part, allowing better visibility of dashboard instruments [4:1]. While they are typically expensive, discounts can make them more accessible
[3:2]. Users suggest looking for vintage pairs secondhand as a budget-friendly option
[3:3].
Polarized Lenses
Polarized lenses are widely recommended for driving due to their ability to reduce glare and eye strain [1:6]. Brands like Ray-Ban and Costa offer polarized options that many users find effective
[2:5]
[5:2]. However, it's important to test these lenses with your vehicle's HUD, as polarization can sometimes interfere with screen visibility
[4:5].
Glass vs. Polycarbonate Lenses
When choosing between glass and polycarbonate lenses, consider durability and optical clarity. Glass lenses are more scratch-resistant and provide crisper vision compared to polycarbonate lenses [5:7]
[5:8]. If you are prone to losing or damaging sunglasses, polycarbonate might be a more economical choice, but if longevity is a priority, glass lenses are preferable.
Other Recommendations
For those seeking affordable options, fishing sunglasses available at sporting goods stores can be a budget-friendly choice [2:6]. Additionally, brands like Randolph Engineering offer high-quality sunglasses with excellent customer service
[2:11].
Hello
Im not only new to this subreddit but also new in the whole car, driving business, so, I wanted to ask you guys if you got the best shades that there will ever be against the sun flare/sun, Im talking about flare on your face, 6 on the morning on your face sun.

Also, while I know its not the best, amazing piece of tech car that there is, Im driving a Matrix 2009, Sport edition.
Copper/Amber tint and polarized lenses for driving. I recently bought a pair of Smith Optics 'Redmond' and I've been really happy with them.
I wear the Smith Guide’s Choice with the polarchromic Copper Ignitor lens. Pretty much wear these all the time except at night.
My Oakley lenses are some of the darker ones I've found. Driving into the sun though is a bitch no matter what I wear
I have some Maui jim glasses that are just amazing, they have the clearest lenses money can buy. I drive every day with them and would never drive without them.
Maui Jim are the only glasses I will buy anymore. Incredibly lightweight and comfortable. Their customer service is absolutely outstanding compared to something like Oakley which is a joke.
Polarized.
I like Rayban wayfarer sunglasses' personally, but polarized takes so much strain off of your eyes it isn't funny.
Also clean inside and outside of your windscreen helps a lot.
The only caveat is if you have a car with a heads up display, you won’t be able to see it with polarized glasses :(
I had to buy some non-polarized sunglasses when I got my M3.
That's not true for all HUDs. I can see my SS HUD just fine with polarized shades on.
Make sure your windshield isn’t pitted and scratched first. Then polarized sunglasses are great, but will wash out a heads up display.
It’s hard for me to find sunglasses that are polarized, are light weight and great for driving. What are you guys wearing these days?
Maui Jims are said to have the best lenses. I like mine more than my polarized ray bans.
I’m on my 5th pair of Maui Jim, and I love them. I just with my current versions folded flatter to keep in my pocket. The Maui Jim case is too large. Anyone have any recommendations for a slim case?
I also have a par of non-polarized Ray Bans that I use for my cars with HUDs. Polarized lenses aren’t compatible with them.
I have a pair of RedSands and Freight Trains. Best sunglasses.
I'll try them for my next pair then... I assume they can do prescription lenses? (I do like my prescription RayBans.
Maybe demo lenses, but anything prescription you go with Zeiss or maybe Essilor (actual lens companies).
Love my maui jim frameless. They’re the lightest pair I’ve owned and have zero blind spots on the sides. Best pair for road trip where fatigue is a factor.
In what ways are the ones you wear outside the car not suitable? I have had zero issues driving while wearing any pair of sunglasses I have ever owned.
I enjoy my Raybans
If you’re looking for cheaper polarized glasses look for fishing glasses. $15-25 at Walmart and still affordable at sporting goods stores.
I can’t see shit when I wear my fishing glasses while driving hahahaha
I use Randolph Engineering. They are not the cheapest, but you're dealing with real people who stand behind their product and you can send them off for a tune-up. Obviously, you are completely free to ignore my hype.
I'm a new driver, and I really don't like wearing sunglasses. I've always had cheap ones, and they're just awful all over. I've realized now that it's probably because I've always had bad ones that don't do anything for glare. Now that I'm actually driving myself around, I definitely need to get a good pair of glasses for sunset/sunrise.
I don't want to break the bank but I would like something stylish for women and that actually works well to filter out the glare from the sun on the windshield & lines on the road etc. Help🥺
There is nothing to recommend for less than $200 retail. You can usually find them 40% off, though. It just takes some looking. How much is breaking the bank. As was stated, Serengetti has the best driving lenses in the world. These are the frames I got for my wife. [holy shit! They're 40% off! Get these ASAP]

If you want the best lenses for driving, I think you should look at Serengeti Drivers.
While they are usually quite expensive, you might find a vintage pair secondhand for under 50 euro.
I’m a big fan of goodr. They are pretty cheap and work great for me.
I drive more than 8 hours a day and the best glasses so far have been Maui Jim.
Hey all. A few years back, I bought a cheap, $20 pair of "HD Driving Sunglasses" from Target. No idea of the brand. They have been the best pair of sunglasses that I've ever owned. I still own them but the nose supports broke off some time back, so if I wear them I have to deal with the fact that the plastic frame is resting on my nose.
These sunglasses have an amber lens that is also darkened like sunglasses. They also have that typical "sport" look to them, like your basic Oakleys. I know people will joke about "HD sunglasses" but I swear that this pair of sunglasses seems give such a great view through the use of the amber tint, the blue light blocking, and the dark tint.
Most I've found are either blue-light blocking with amber lenses that have zero tint to them or they're blue-light blocking but without the amber tint. For the life of me I haven't been able to find a similar pair of sunglasses! I've been trying for months to find the same pair elsewhere but can't seem to find a pair that has the entire combo of features.
Any ideas?
I've had most of the big name sunglasses out there and for me, the best i've found are Maui Jims and it's not even close. Made in Japan and the lenses are excellent. I have the 'hoopkika' ones I think, bu they have many different kinds. My dad loves them now too. They're also the most comfortable i've had. I can wear them on road trips for 10 hours or fishing however long and I never get tired of wearing or the feeling of wanting to take them off.
Do you know if there is any difference in the Maui Jim sunglasses that Costco sells?
Glass lens Costas are probably the closest to BIFL. They are built for professional fishermen so the glass and polarizing are top notch and they have a good replacement policy. They won’t be $20.
Maui Jim. Lifetime warranty. Best lenses. They replace my frames for free once frame gets loose.
Just checked with Maui Jim - and yeah the arms , and part in the middle are g’teed for life - only the lens / glass is not.. so an old trusted pair are off to be repaired / broken arm. Happy days , thanks for the tip.. above.
Also one of the few major brands not owned by Luxottica.
Their website says they only have a 2 year limited warranty
Do you know if there is any difference in the Maui Jim sunglasses that Costco sells? Basically 50% off, so I imagine they're lessor quality?
Agree on this if you're willing to spend the money or find them on sale. The optical quality is incredible. Only complaint about my particular pair is that they are slightly heavy.
Keep in mind that a lot of polarized lenses won't let you see your HUD or other screens, like gas station displays. It all depends on how the manufacturer sets up the direction of the polarization. If you can, try out the sunglasses on your HUD before buying.
Yep this is why I am looking for a moderate price pair for my car that has the HUD!
Serengeti Drivers Gradient, nonpolarized. Or, Costco gray, polarized. Costco probably can do you up with amber lenses. The Serengetis reduce the tint on the lower part of the lens, so you can see your dashboard instruments.
(Prescription not needed). Hi all, unfortunately, my morning and evening commute involve driving into the sun. I seem to be one of those lucky people and it would be very beneficial to find a pair of sunglasses that help me out with this intense brightness lol. I find myself often going to the beach to fish, so maybe a polarized option would also be helpful.
Lastly, I’m definitely looking for something on the darker side of shade. I was considering something with a red mirror finish, but I’m also concerned about durability as they have a four-year-old kid that loves to play with glasses too lol. If there’s any options for ones that are mostly scratch proof that would greatly extend the life that I’ll be able to hang onto them before. I’ve been lurking in the sub and have seen a lot of great recommendations, but figured I would post in here to see if anybody had any similar use cases.
For what it’s worth, I have a big nose and kind of a oval shaped face which makes finding frames that fit me well difficult. Typically, I just go with the classic aviator style, and whatever you call those super common square cheap plastic sunglasses that seem to come with random purchases or as gimmick key things. Oddly enough, they tend to fit my face. Well, I don’t know the exact term for it is.
I would go with Costa Blue mirror lens in a wrap frame. Designed for bright sunlight and long exposure (like offshore fishing). Encapsulated mirror and a glass lens is the most scratch resistant you can get.
I review it fully here.
Is there is big difference in the polycarbonate vs the glass? I’ve definitely read your blog. Great site! I saw some today in the surf store next to my jobsite. Got to try on the blue ones, and snap some pics but they weren’t the glass lens. I’m not too familiar with what the differences may be (or if I want blue/red/grey).
The optical clarity in those was honestly really surprising
The glass is crisper and more scratch resistant, which you indicated is better for you
Maui Jim brand. Best polarized lenses. Go with a grey lens. Stay away from mirror may trigger headaches with from mirror coating if you are sensitive. And choose a model that includes there super thin glass lens
I have a similar issue. I have a pair of black lens Smith (bigger frame kinda, black color) and a dark grey lens Costa in a light color frame that’s thinner. The Smith ones are for ultra bright or beach days and the Costa are my daily use. I have both with glass lenses. So worth it!
I checked out the costas today at a surf shop - they only had the polycarbonate lenses in their display though. Is the glass a big difference? It was hard to decide on colors but definitely appreciated that they were pretty dark!
Sorry didn’t see your comment. Glass doesn’t scratch like the plastic does. I had a pair of plastic lens Smith and they got all messed up and the polarization went bad (they gave me $250 to buy a replacement! Great warranty). If you’re good at not losing your glasses, I’d buy the glass ones because they’ll last you longer
Probably some Maui Jim's with one of their mirrored, mineral glass lenses. If you want shielded sides, I like Vuarnet, but they're too expensive for fishing. Julbo has removable side shields and are 1/3 the price. I don't have a pair yet to make a proper recommendation. I'm really excited to get a pair of Serengetti's with the cat3 lenses this week. Get in on the sale for the sub if you can. 40% off for us. These are going to be the best for driving. It's what they're made for. Make sure to look for sales. Nice sunglasses don't age as fast as people get bored with them. Their loss is your gain.
Hello! My current commute to and from work is about an hr each way and I’m hit with the sunrise and the sunset at the moment. Before I go buy any ol pair of sunglasses, does anyone have any reasonably priced sunglasses recommendations for women? I would love to be able to see dangers in the road and also not be blinded by the sun almost everyday for an hr at a time lol!
Also open to other recommendations besides sunglasses. I don’t have tint on my car currently and not opposed to getting tint if it does help but I like my visibility, safety, and frugality, over everything! TIA!!
I usually buy tinted safety glasses from Home Depot. There are some relatively stylish options and they're not too expensive.
That’s a great idea, ty for the rec :)
Spend the money to get polarized lenses. Stylish gradient lenses are not preferred. You want a solid (darker) lens tint (e.g. Ray-Ban's standard G15 lens).
It's been awhile but omg this morning 635 am 90 east pa the damn sun was right in my face then make things worse the windshield started fogging up. Anyhow I have a dark pair of glasses but I really don't like them. What do you all use cause never fails I tend to slow down and others just keep on trucking.
Do them yellow ones work? Anyhow link what you use please thxs
Military pilots use either of these brands:
I have aviators from both companies. Awesome sunglasses. Bought on Amazon. I prefer the lenses made from real glass instead of plastic/acrylic to prevent scratches.
There are a few brands that are "premium cheap sunglasses ". I've got some from Shady Ray's. They're decent - polarized with good lens quality. I have the standard trucker style. Blenders is another.
With that being said, I just got (as a gift) a pair of Ray Ban chromance. They're next level. TBH, I was conflicted about using them at work. I do flatbed, so they get exposed to harsh environments.
I split the difference. Shady Ray's for out in the yard, Ray Bans for driving.
IMO the yellow ones are great, but not for direct sunlight. They’re better for lowlight. For example, I’d use them in the dark up until the sun starts getting up above the horizon. For sunset, I use them when the sun is getting near the horizon about to dip. It helps my eyes adjust more quickly to the transitioning light. But I wouldn’t wear them if the sun was directly in my sight line. I’d go with polarized sunglasses for those situations.
The yellow ones you can get anywhere. Just search Amazon for “yellow polarized” or “yellow HD.”
Instead of wearing sunglasses with the basic “dark tint” as the lens, I’d highly recommend polarized sunglasses with colored blue reflective tint. It doesn’t make everything blue, but it’s brighter than just the normal black tinted ones. They work a lot better for when it’s still too bright out for the yellow ones. I have ones like this: (https://www.nikevision.com/sunglasses/nike-brazen-fury). I got them at the Nike outlet for half the price, but I’m sure you can find similar ones that are way less. It’s just an example of how the lenses look.
I’m famous for losing or breaking sunglasses so now I just buy a box of tinted safety glasses. Cheap and easy to find but kinda uncomfortable and dam hard to look cool while wearing them but they do the trick.
Sorry but I’ve never heard of you
You probably just don’t recognize me cause I’ve lost my sunglasses and don’t have them on
You need polarized sunglasses , go to a local sunglass store and they can demo it to you in person , they show you the difference between two sunglasses with polarized lenses and one without .
Polarized are a must for driving during the day. Reduces the glare from the sun bouncing off of everything by a lot. Non-prescription lenses are not very expensive.
They're also great for seeing better through rain/spray and fog.
You can buy name brand glasses at your optometrist store with your FSA / HSA account.
I got laser eye surgery a few months ago and have purchased a few pairs of shades, as I never really had a chance to buy them before since putting RX lenses in was prohibitively expensive.
I have found that with a good pair, it really cuts down on glare and eye fatigue over those long drives, and you can see through people's windshields to see where they're looking, etc. to better anticipate if somebody's going to turn in front of you, etc.
The best I have found thus far have been Maui Jim, which are kick-ass for gloomy days like rain and overcast weather, but the only downside is the lighter lens color ones I got are not as good for bright conditions. But the optic clarity kicks my Persols and Ray Bans asses. Bought a pair of the Randolph Engineering aviators with polarized green lenses, and they look the coolest and have real glass lenses but I still think the Maui Jims are better. Only downside of the polarized lenses is i can't read some of the instrumentation on my car like the clock and it makes the infotainment look a bit weird.
I get a big discount on Oakleys through my work, but the ones I've handled feel cheap and a lot look too much like I'm in The Matrix.
What are your go-to driving sunglasses? What do you consider to be the best?
Prescription lenses were prohibitively expensive? I didn't get something outrageously fancy or expensive, but they look like smaller aviators and with my prescription the frames and lenses were 125$ - without vision insurance. I intend to just update the prescription every two years for around 75$. If those are prohibitively expensive, I don't think the other suggestions here like the Maui Jim starting around 200$ or the Smiths starting around 100$ will work for you either.
Got some Ray Ban Wayfarers for like 190...putting the lenses in here was another 150 or so (!). That's something like 340 bucks. For a 190 pair of sunglasses. And my RX was changing too, so every couple years gotta put new lenses in and start all over again....
Plus, the pain of switching them back and forth between my eyeglasses and sunglasses, for example being outside, then wanting to go inside to a restaurant, etc. carrying the case, blah blah. Got on my nerves.
I don't mind paying upwards of 350 for sunglasses, but I didn't want to then pay more on top of that to put other lenses in.
It's not that I couldn't afford them, it just seemed like a bad value for what I got.
I think part of it is just going with expensive frames in the first place - not that that's a bad thing, I certainly understand the value of quality. But I'm also a cheap bastard; I didn't go cheapest, but reasonable enough. No idea what the brand is without going outside to check though.
I get your point - it's definitely annoying switching glasses. Wish I could do the surgery, but it won't fix my eye problems. At any rate; my point is just that sunglasses are something I'd be going "cheap, but not cheapest" on. To each their own; I just don't see much difference between the cheap ones and the name brands for 350$ without prescription.
My real answer for this thread is: whatever has the most surface area possible. I really hate it when the sun creeps in from the top or sides and blinds me briefly.
Ray-Ban Aviators are my glasses of choice.
I love my old Ray-Ban with Chromax lense. Recently picked a pair of Randoplh Engineering and like them allot. But on not so sunny days they can be a bit dark.
Love mine. Had them about 5 years now. Only complaint is feel kinda heavy on the nose to me after a few hours but it's a small price to pay
Something polarized with a brown tint
Any reason you like brown?
Matches well with his diesel manual Miata wagon
Increases contrast
Warby Parkers are incredible
I've stuck with Maui Jim myself for several years but I need to get a different pair for driving. The only reason for this is that all Maui Jims are polarized. This is usually a good thing but it makes my heads up display pretty much invisible...
What brand or model do you find reduces glare is best in direct sun conditions particularly in winter when the sun is low? Hate being blinded all the time
Oakley polarized. But I can get them for like half off. And don't lose them so
Go to Walmart and look in the tool section. In that section, they should have some eye protection glasses that are tinted for the sun. I've purchased many sunglasses at trucks top and they always end up breaking (poor quality). The one I got at Walmart is going 2 years strong and still in great shape.
They are the same ones you get on construction jobs. Can also be found at Harbor Freight. 4 or 5 bucks a pair. I like them.
Yeah, i think I got mine for like 4 dollars. They are very sturdy.
Walmart ironman wraps my my go to
Costa del mar expensive but worth every penny
I paid money for polarized prescription sunglasses. I have a pair for each vehicle I drive regularly.
I have difficulty driving because the sun is too strong and I am in the market for a pair of polarized sunglasses. However I do not want to get something that is over 150$.
I don't wear glasses normally and my vision is perfect so I guess finding a cheaper pair of glasses wouldn't be that hard.
Not really looking for an aviator since I have worn them all my life.
I am currently in San Jose and would ideally like to walk in to a store and try them on before buying them.
Any suggestions?
I have heard that Quay is a good and cheap brand for sunglasses and might give them a shot.
For driving = Serengeti should always be a consideration regardless of style - luv Corning Optics lens
I second this serengeti have the best lenses I've ever tried for driving
SUBGOD are the best sunglasses I’ve owned. Not mega expensive and have a lifetime warranty! I broke my lenses on a ski trip and they sent me a replacement pair next day delivered while I was on the trip. Highly recommend
If you decide to go with them I have a discount code you can use - CR1-OHTARPUT
Think you mean SUN GOD. SUBGOD is going to take you to a whole different kind of web page.
And if they are the best you've ever tried on go try some nice frames on because they are ray bans quality at most with nicer colours put on average lenses.
airfarer? do you mean wayfarer? so plastic frames are out?
try the traditonal rayban aviators or rayban caravan which is a square aviator. go for the polarized options obviously. the net is flooded with fakes. so buy from raybans.com or go to legit store and buy there. looks for sales. they are quite common.
if you can stretch to $200+, try american optical.
Never heard of “Quay”. I would just browse around in some optical stores and try on different styles to see what you like and what fits best.
I use polarized for driving, but if you have a new high-tech car with lots of screen data it might not be a good idea. Polarized lenses filter out a lot of light from the pixels. Try on a polarized pair and look at your phone, you'll see what I'm talking about.
I ordered a pair or Raens. Great style and decent price, but the lenses are plastic and not as clear as even Raybans. Their fine though, and IMO have the best looking affordable acetate frames.
best sunglasses for driving
Key Considerations for Driving Sunglasses:
Polarization: Look for polarized lenses to reduce glare from the road and other surfaces, which can enhance visibility and comfort while driving.
Lens Color: Gray or brown lenses are ideal for driving as they provide true color perception and reduce brightness without distorting colors.
UV Protection: Ensure the sunglasses offer 100% UV protection (UV400) to shield your eyes from harmful UV rays.
Fit and Comfort: Choose sunglasses that fit well and are comfortable for long periods. Look for lightweight frames and adjustable nose pads if needed.
Wraparound Style: Consider wraparound styles to provide better coverage and reduce peripheral glare.
Recommendations:
Ray-Ban RB2132 New Wayfarer: These offer a classic style with polarized lenses and excellent UV protection, making them a great choice for driving.
Oakley Holbrook: Known for their durability and comfort, these sunglasses feature polarized lenses and a wraparound design for enhanced coverage.
