I recommend taking a look at some of the many thrift questions already asked of, and answered by, this subreddit as the 'best' answers vary by what you seek (furniture, flatware, clothes by gender and era, etc.).

Best thrift store in new york

Posted by Federal-Relation5414 · in r/AskNYC · 1 year ago

My family is going to new York in 8 days. What is the best thrift store, ideally accessible by walking or public transport as won't have a car and stuff you could take back on a plane E.g not furniture . Curated more exspensive Vintage stores also okay, but hoping to find where people who live in New York actually go, that isn't too over priced and often has a good range. Flee Markets also accepted as we will be there for at least a week (need to look at length again) from the 18th.

Sorry if this is a repeated question I will take it down if it is.

Any recommendations are much appreciated.

Edit: good point below, I should add that I mean in central new York kind of area or accessible easily by transport rather than out in far suburbs or not near anywhere, but anywhere suggested I will take a look if it works from where I am staying. (Sorry if that doesn't make sense I can give a better sense of area)

Search ‘thrift’ on this sub and you should finds lots of good responses. This is honestly the 300th+ time I’ve seen this question asked.

3 upvotes on reddit
Potential-Error2529 · 1 year ago

Well, "accessible by walking" would depend on you telling us your starting point since I could suggest somewhere deep in Brooklyn and you could be staying by Central Park. It's technically accessible by walking but that's probably not what you mean.

But yeah it is pretty repeated so search the sub and look at those suggestions on Google (reviews, pictures, inventory if their website has it). If none interest you, ask again and this time say "I've considered Blank, Blank, and Blank but they don't seem to be what I'm looking for. Anything else?"

I found L Train Vintage to be pretty good. We visited the one in Brooklyn on Knickerbocker Ave and it was huge with very reasonable prices, they have a few locations around. Also search Goodwill as there are a few around the city, I got a pair of brand new looking Levis for $10 in the first one we went to.

Housing works and Buffalo Exchange are also worth checking.

Posted by curiousbt · in r/AskNYC · 1 year ago

Buffalo Exchange and Crossroads are close to me but I've read some abysmal reviews. Either they're only taking specific items that are "in style," do not having a unique selection of items to choose from, or they're just overpriced.

I've only been at a store thrift store once, so I'm inexperienced but I know folks that thrift and they have it down to a lifestyle. They thrift mostly in BK though.

Oh, I need a place too! Ideally, I would donate my old clothes to a charity that actually does good. I love Goodwill but I'm sure there are others.

is your goal to get rid of old clothes or to make some money? you usually cant do both at the same time unless you have designer items. most thrift stores want vintage or not-mall-brands.

or are you looking to shop?

3 upvotes on reddit
curiousbt · OP · 1 year ago

I’m looking to get rid of old clothes. If it’s a spot that has decent clothing, I’ll get store credit and shop. Otherwise, cash.

1 upvotes on reddit
G
glittersparklythings · 1 year ago

Then you want a consignment store, not a thrift store.

There person above menus do you just want to get rid of them as in donate them or make someone money. Those are different scenarios. It looks like you just don’t want to get rid of them. You do want to make money.

Buffalos exchange is a consignment store. The person that mentioned Goodwill above.. well that is a thrift store. Thrift store won’t give you money. It somewhrrr you Donets your stuff to just get rid of it.

Sounds like you need to be looking for consignment stores. And remember if they are selling a certain pair of jeans for $10 you aren’t going to get $20 for it. The store needs to buy for cheaper so they can make a profit.

best thrift stores in nyc?

Posted by Acceptable-Pick8880 · in r/thrifting · 3 years ago

i’m taking a trip to nyc next week and wanted to do some thrifting. i’m staying on the upper west side of manhattan so would love some recommendations around there but ofc i’ll be all over the city so not super strict. also what should i be expecting to pay? i usually don’t pay over $5 for a piece but obviously nyc is gonna be more expensive. would y’all say it’s more in the 10-20 range for items? i know this is all dependent on what you are purchasing but still. also if anyone knows of a good store with decently priced designer/vintage stuff i would love that recommendation too. TIA! :)

I lived in NYC for grad school and I found thrifting more difficult than it was out west. It’s hard for a thrift store to pay Manhattan rent without selling designer stuff for essentially retail price. That said, I was fond of Housing Works. There’s a nicer chain of thrift stores called The Cure, but I couldn’t afford it as a student.

If you’re willing to take a day trip to NJ I can recommend some great ones around here

1 upvotes on reddit
unaverageN · 3 years ago

Please do share!

2 upvotes on reddit
cherylcanning · 3 years ago

Okay, so these are the three places I think it’d be worth making a day trip for.

Goodwill Bins, South Hackensack, NJ

  • Pay by the pound (~$2.10/lb, it varies by what you’re buying but it’s around that)
  • Setup: Big indoor venue, there’s a holding room and the room with the bins. Bins are shallow, about waist level, and filled with whatever people have donated. They’re arranged in aisles that you can navigate with your cart. When new inventory is brought out, they make you line up in the holding room then file in and choose a bin to stand in front of. When they tell you to go it’s a mad dash to find gold because it could be literally anywhere.
  • You should go here if you’re experienced and looking for a treasure hunt style thrifting experience
  • Risk factor: Highest risk (of not finding anything), highest reward (paying pennies for gold, if you find it)

Red, White, and Blue, Paterson, NJ

  • Each item is individually tagged, and depending on the color of the tag it might be eligible for the discount of the day. Majority of items are between $5 and $15, but they know what they have and designer items will be marked up accordingly. Cash only.
  • Setup: Stupidly organized. It’s a GIANT indoor venue with tons of employees and clothes organized by type and color, eg. dresses are grouped together and hung according to color. They also have lots of home goods, shoes, appliances etc. and most things are pretty nice; they don’t carry much garbage.
  • You should go here if you want the setup of a traditional thrift store but with double, triple, quadruple the offerings.
  • Risk factor: not much, you’ll almost definitely find something cool here, but don’t expect any white whale finds.

Meadowlands Flea Market, MetLife Stadium Parking Lot (ONLY OPEN ON SATURDAY MORNING!!!)

  • Pay whatever the vendor is charging; you can haggle. Clothes (not including coats) shouldn’t be more than $5 a piece and many people will offer 3/$10 or something like that. Bring cash, the ATM is not reliable.
  • Setup: Huge outdoor venue with people from all over selling whatever they brought that day. Clothes, shoes, antiques, makeup, art, jewelry, aromatics, weapons, shit that didn’t sell in the vendor’s store, toys for kids, gardening equipment, scary looking tools, chainsaws etc. There are also several food vendors, including a charcoal grill team, a pickle guy, a corn guy, the hot dog folk, ice cream guys, and a shaded place for outdoor dining.
  • You should go here if you want a peak cultural experience, some super interesting catch & releases, and awesome people watching
  • Risk factor: if you’re on a serious clothes hunt you might not find everything you’re looking for
  • This is where I bring guests when they visit
  • Located right next to the American Dream mall

L Train Vintage in Brooklyn and Manhattan great Y2K or streetwear pieces.
Cure Thrift in the East Village is a bit pricier but well curated and supports a good cause.
AuH2O in the East Village is small and super affordable with lots under $10.
Beacon’s Closet in Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and Union Square leans more fashion-forward and trendy.
Housing Works in SoHo, Chelsea, and the Upper East Side has more upscale finds and supports HIV/AIDS services.

Don’t go to Monk Vintage in Brooklyn. I used to work there. They didn’t wash the clothes, they hike up the price on things they have no knowledge of, their employees are mentally and physically abused. Discrimination at its finest. On top of all that, they just have a bunch of Zara and reprint tee shirts that customers donated thinking they were going to charity. It’s places like this that suck the life out of vintage shops.
