What Redditors are Saying

Best Time to Visit Seoul

TL;DR The best time to visit Seoul is during the spring (late March to early May) or fall (September to November) for pleasant weather and beautiful scenery. Avoid July and August due to heat and humidity.

Spring: Cherry Blossoms and Mild Weather

Spring, particularly late March to early April, is a popular time to visit Seoul because of the cherry blossoms [1:1][2:1]. The weather is mild, allowing visitors to enjoy outdoor activities without extreme cold or heat [3:1]. However, be aware that air pollution and yellow dust can sometimes affect the air quality in spring [3:4].

Fall: Autumn Foliage and Comfortable Temperatures

Fall, especially from late September to early November, is another ideal time to visit Seoul [1:1][2:5]. The autumn foliage transforms the city, offering stunning views and cooler temperatures [1:3]. October is particularly favored for its mild climate and vibrant colors [3:2].

Summer: Festivals but Extreme Heat and Humidity

While summer hosts various festivals and concerts, it is often considered less desirable due to high heat, humidity, and occasional rain [5:1][5:5]. June might still be manageable, but July and August are typically very hot and humid [5:7][5:12].

Winter: Cold and Potential Snow

Winter in Seoul can be cold, with temperatures dropping significantly. While some travelers enjoy the winter scenery and potential snow, others find the cold and grey conditions less appealing [2:1][3:1]. If you plan to visit during winter, prepare for chilly weather and consider timing your trip around year-end concerts or award shows [2:2].

Additional Considerations

When planning your trip, consider personal preferences for weather and activities. For example, if you enjoy k-pop concerts, align your visit with concert schedules [2:1]. Additionally, keep in mind that popular tourist seasons will bring crowds, so plan accordingly to avoid peak times [1:7].

ORIGINAL POST

I’ve recently returned from a trip during September/October and the weather for the most part was great! I could tell the weather was getting much cooler after the first week of October.

What are other months that are great for Korea travel. I would like to go during the Summer but I’ve heard June/July gets really hot and humid.

I’ve heard spring is a good time as well but don’t know months.

Definitely late march/early April to catch the cherry blossoms! I was in Seoul and the streets were totally white/pink-ish, really really beautiful…the hills near everland were also pink and looked amazing. It’s also nice because the weather is cold enough to wear sweaters but not too cold (with some warm and some really cold days). I also think that late october/early November must be really nice (at least for me, since I prefer the colder weather), and i think it’s at this time that you can see the orange leafs

How were the crowd levels during that time?

1 upvotes on reddit
perfskinseeker · 11 months ago

Bruh seoul will have crowds always on popular seasons and on Fridays/ weekends! And even in popular times for tourists most of it will be Koreans…. So there’s no point in choosing according to crowds. If you don’t want crowds, just take the first metro to the place and arrive/ enjoy/ take photos super early ! In spring this is nice since you will be fresh and cool in the early morning.

Personally end of October to mid-November. The autumn/fall colour changes Korea entirely and it just feels so different. The cooler weather, the beautiful foliage, everything about that season.

That was my travel couple years ago but the temperature fluctuations for my stay a little severe. If you're not packing for that, it might be unpleasant. As is, I escaped to Busan for a couple of days for the worst of it.

This year, it was the beginning of June and it was fine. Not too hot.

So do I need to pack for warm Spring type of weather during the day (60-70f) and early winter weather for evening (40s) or even colder? I’m going yo be prepared for the cold. I just want to know how to prepare for the warm end of it. We’re going soon for the last 2 weeks of Oct.

I'll arrive in Korea on 2nd November, do you think I will still be able to see some autumn foliage in Seoul?

Mid June to August will be too hot and humid. December to mid March is too cold.

Late March - early April is good if you want to see cherry blossoms but other trees will be bare. Personally not my favourite time as the mountains look sad.

Mid April - Mid May is good as the weather is just right and more flowers and leaves are in sight. Personally my favourite time.

Mid May - Mid June is not yet too hot and the mountains are lusciously green. I did a trip in Gangwon-do mountains in June and it was so beautiful.

End October weather i getting cooler but day time can still be a little warm in the sun. Mountain autumn foliage looks beautiful.

Will be doing a mountain trip in Jello provinces next month! Hope to see some beautiful colours.

You came at the best time.

Mid April-early June are also nice. July and August are extremely hot, humid and sometimes very rainy.

November and December are cold and grey.

If you're lucky and get snow, January-February are cold, but pretty. March is the worst month of the year. Yellow dust, air pollution, pre-thaw before the spring. Everything is grey with a yellow hue from the air.

My favourite months are end of March to the beginning of May. If you come around end of March and beginning of April you can catch cherry blossom season which is beautiful.

My other favourite time, as you mentioned, is end of September to beginning of November. You can catch the lovely autumn foliage and like the above months it’s nice decent temperatures.

June for me is fine and I still think it’s decent. I would avoid July and August as it is the monsoon and rainy season. It’s not too bad sometimes in Seoul but if you are visiting in the southern regions it will be an inconvenience. Also, as you mentioned the humidity is killer sometimes.

Best time to visit Seoul?

Both concert tickets and having merchandise/albums shipped to me are so expensive in the San Francisco bay area. I am thinking I should save up my kpop dollars and just go to Korea. What’s a good time of year to go? I’s like to see a couple of stages and a concert or two. Some of the indie/hip hop people have busking events as well. I am thinking maybe in the fall of next year for my birthday.

I'm gonna give a not so popular advice here since this is under r/kpophelp. If you want to attend those big summer concerts or festivals with idols performing (waterbomb festival), then summer is the way to go. They ususally happen around July-August. If you want to attend the big year-end concerts or award shows, then mid winter will be your best bet. So basically around early December. Otherwise, Spring and Fall are the most popular travel seasons.

As Seoul resident I can verify summer can be too humid-hot and winter be windy-cold, which are worst kind of weathers.

Spring is random roll of being nice or having tons of extra pollution in the air.

Fall is the best time, with no significant drawbacks.

Aim for spring if you want to see cherry blossoms, early fall if you prefer foliage. Weather in both seasons is pretty nice. It's super hot in the summer time and super cold in winter.

As for stages, music shows are on year round, it just depends on the comeback schedule of your faves to determine when they'll be on the show. Same for concerts. If you're ok with cold, all the award shows and special stages are at the end of the year/ in January, but I don't know how easy it will be to get tickets to those!

If I was setting up a two week trip for someone and trying to really narrow down the ideal date range, I would do either:

- Spring: First two weeks of April

- Fall: Last week of October and first week of November

I prefer fall. For a shorter trip, I would take the same range and get in the middle of it and remove days from the ends.

I would say over the next month or two is my favorite time of the year to be in town. Spring time is very mild and pleasant. It's not too cold at night and it's when the Cherry Blossoms bloom.

The summer is disgustingly hot and iffy for plans thanks to the monsoon season.

The fall is equally nice. October to November will still be relatively mild and the Siberian wind gusts won't become a problem until much later in November or early December.

Coming from the northeast in the US where winter weather can be an issues, winters in Seoul aren't terrible. Just cold, wet, and grey. If you have a good coat you'll be fine.

My pre planning phase for my first solo trip to Korea has come to an end and I am going for 3 weeks next year.

Work wise the easiest month to take a few weeks off would be february, march or April?

Weatherwise this month should be fine because I could avoid the extreme heat and maybe the extreme cold (besides february maybe) that can ocur in Korea.

Which month would offer the most pleasent temperature on average?

Cold would not stop me in general either. It can be rather cold here in Austria as well. But when talking about cold it depends on the exact temperature of course. I have seen the charts and it can be way colder in Korea than in Austria. So it might be indeed too cold for me.

In general warmer temperatures would be more comfortable for me because I want to do lot's of outdoor stuff.

Probably the best time to travel to South Korea. Still warm, little to no rain and the leaves turn colourful.

But be aware that Chuseok is on the 6th of October. Hotels are much more expensive during that time…

11 upvotes on reddit

Then don’t go to Seoul 💀

Not trying to be mean, but are you asking for actual advice or do you just want to be validated? Like most are saying, June/July aren’t ideal due to humidity, heat, and showers. If those are the only two months you can travel, then there are other spots that would be more comfortable. If you really want to go to SK specifically, then you should go regardless of whether those two months are good or not.

Same. I'm leaving literally the day my kid gets out of school so we can hopefully by pass some of the worst of the rain.

Still planning to bring umbrellas, light waterproof pants and ponchos. It is what it is 🤷

ETA: We also had to shift our plans to avoid Seoul June 9th to 15th. It looked like places were getting booked up around then and hotels were inflated. Supposedly that's a BTS comeback week of some sort

In July, the heat and humidity would kill you. Its basically the peak of summer. June is still bad, but better of the two.

I had a short visit to Seoul last year (July), and it was terrible.

I have spent a lot of time in Korea. So, I can tell you that last summer was one of the worst for humidity that I had ever seen. Even in late August.

I love the heat so I can't complain too much... just make sure to bring PLENTY of antiperspirant and Korea also sells this spray that cools you off so even the locals have their ways of working with it. Wear loose-fitting clothes made of cotton if possible to keep air circulation. You'll even see women in public bathrooms refreshing themselves, so I started bringing a change of socks, toothbrush and toothpaste, and my skincare and makeup stuff so I could clean my face and everything :)

Have fun and put on plenty of sunscreen throughout the days!!

Seoul, South Korea in late May or early June?

Posted by lovedirl · in r/koreatravel · 26 days ago

We are planning to travel to Seoul, South Korea for 3 weeks next year and are deciding betweem the second half of May (leaving in the beginning of June) and the first half of June (arriving in the last week of May) We are planning to do some sightseeing, love visiting cafes and eating. We aren't looking to party and aren't really interested in night life at all. More chill but willing to walk around and explore.

What are your experiences regarding weather (humidity and temperatures) comparing the two time frames?

The thing to worry about is come around mid-june is monsoon season, so time wise that can vary by a days or weeks.

We have visited twice in recent years, mid-May to early June. Weather was perfect. Minimal rain, only a handful of days where alight jacket was needed. We were mostly in shorts and t-shirts. Can’t go wrong that time of year.

2 upvotes on reddit
TravelPorg · 26 days ago

Earlier the better. June is hotter, but you also run the risk of monsoon season starting early and the country gets battered by rain storms.

But yes, early May is cooler and April is even better.

May is generally cooler with 25oC to 30oC while June will be 27oC to 32oC.

Humidity in June is almost guaranteed to be higher, but if we get early rains, then it will be much higher.

Just want to make sure you know that Korea is still requiring 14-day quarantines upon arrival. I haven't heard a whole lot, but from what I've heard the vaccine rollout there is a little slow and this quarantine may be required through the end of the year.

Let's hope things change for the better, but something to keep in mind.

I see, but I guess we can avoid that after writing an application or something. Moreover I’ll be vaccinated by then. In India people of age 18 and above can get themselves vaccinated from 1st May onwards.

Vaccination status doesn't matter, Korea is still making vaccinated people quarantine. Mostly you've just gotta cross your fingers and hope Korea lifts the quarantine requirement by August/September.

You are correct that during those times, Korea is still quite humid. My recommendation is to possibly travel to Korea a few weeks later when the cool Autumn weather starts to come. Overall, the best time to visit Korea is probably mid-fall or Spring as the flowers begin to bloom and the sun starts to shine before it gets too humid.
It looks like you don’t enjoy the heat too much, so I would try to delay your trip a bit so that you can enjoy Korea when it's not too hot.
If you happen to visit in September, you may be able to enjoy the holiday season in Korea. Celebrated across the entire nation, people dress up cultural wear (hanbok), enjoy holiday feasts, and host various festivals and events to celebrate the good harvest.
If you’re looking for things to do during your stay or to learn more about Chuseok, I recommend checking out Visit Seoul as they have lots of attractions to check out so you can plan a trip that best fits you!

The best time of year to visit Korea is in the fall - from a local resident

Posted by niftywoah · in r/koreatravel · 2 years ago

That's basically it. And a PSA in case you are thinking of traveling here and have free time this autumn.

I don't understand why people visit Korea in the summer -- aside from school schedules etc -- but it's truly a horrible time of year to visit here, with the heat and the rain. Spring is not great with the air pollution, although the cherry blossoms are nice if you happen to visit during the bloom but it's hard to time it right. And winter is brutally cold. (Some people from elsewhere in Asia come here to ski, though the skiing is pretty bad and much better in Japan.)

Autumn here is the best I've experienced anywhere in the world. Temperatures are perfect, the foliage is beautiful. Hiking or wandering around the hanok villages in the fall is so dreamy. Only note is that travel/closings on Chuseok holiday can be difficult.

TLDR: Don't come to Korea in the summer. Come mid-September to early November if you can.

Definitely agree. I have visited Korea in all 4 seasons and by far Autumn/Fall is the best time to visit Korea.

While spring weather isn’t too far off from Autumn, Korea in Autumn just feels different. It’s not too cold or hot during the day and cool at night. It’s the best time to spend as much time outdoors, especially with all the different yellow and brown tones.

best time to visit seoul

Key Considerations for Visiting Seoul:

  1. Seasons:

    • Spring (April to June): Ideal for cherry blossoms and mild weather. Temperatures range from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F).
    • Summer (July to August): Hot and humid, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C (86°F). Expect heavy rainfall.
    • Autumn (September to November): Another great time to visit, with beautiful fall foliage and comfortable temperatures (10°C to 20°C or 50°F to 68°F).
    • Winter (December to February): Cold, with temperatures often dropping below 0°C (32°F). Great for winter sports and festive decorations.
  2. Festivals and Events:

    • Cherry Blossom Festival (April): A must-see if visiting in spring.
    • Seoul Lantern Festival (November): Beautiful displays along the Cheonggyecheon Stream.
    • Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok (Harvest Festival): Cultural experiences, but many businesses may close.
  3. Crowds and Prices:

    • Peak Tourist Season: Spring and autumn attract the most visitors, leading to higher prices and crowded attractions.
    • Off-Peak: Winter can be less crowded and more affordable, but some attractions may have limited hours.

Recommendation: The best times to visit Seoul are during spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) for pleasant weather and vibrant scenery. If you enjoy cultural experiences, consider timing your visit around local festivals.
