Central Seoul: Jongno and Insadong
Jongno and Insadong are highly recommended for their central location, cultural attractions, and quieter streets compared to other bustling areas. These neighborhoods offer easy access to historical sites like Gyeongbokgung Palace and Bukchon Hanok Village [1:1]. Visitors have praised the area for being close to everything while maintaining a peaceful atmosphere
[1:2],
[1:4]. The Nine Tree Premier Hotel Insadong is noted for its minimalist yet comfortable accommodations and proximity to food options and public transport
[1:5].
Hongdae
Known for its vibrant nightlife, artistic vibe, and youthful energy, Hongdae is perfect for those interested in cafes, bars, and cultural experiences. It's a favorite among younger travelers and offers excellent subway access [3:1],
[4:1]. While it may not be as quiet as other neighborhoods, its lively atmosphere and abundance of shopping and dining options make it a popular choice
[4:2].
Myeongdong
Myeongdong is centrally located and offers great accessibility to public transportation, making it convenient for exploring Seoul. It is known for its shopping and food scene, though some find it too touristy [3:5],
[4:6]. Despite mixed reviews about its current appeal, Myeongdong remains a practical choice for first-time visitors due to its proximity to major attractions like N Seoul Tower and Gyeongbokgung
[4:5].
Yongsan
Yongsan is often overlooked but provides a strategic location with quick access to various parts of Seoul. It's close to Itaewon and offers a more local experience with cute cafes and parks nearby [5:2]. It's an ideal choice for those who prefer a less touristy environment while still being well-connected.
Hapjeong
Hapjeong offers excellent subway connectivity and is within walking distance of Hongdae and the Han River. It's appreciated for its quieter ambiance compared to neighboring areas, making it suitable for those who enjoy a balance between tranquility and accessibility [3:1],
[3:6].
When choosing a neighborhood in Seoul, consider your interests and preferences, such as nightlife, cultural experiences, or convenience to public transportation. Each area has its unique charm and can cater to different types of travelers.
Hi everyone! I’m planning a trip to South Korea in May 2025 and I will be in Seoul for 3 nights at the beginning of the trip and 5 other nights at the end. I’m thinking about staying in two different neighborhoods so that I can explore different part of the city (travelling with my bf). I’m looking for centralish but not too touristy neighborhoods with medium budget hotels on calm streets (I would prefer travelling more with subways and trains than staying in a noisy street). What would you recommend as areas? If you also have hotel recommendations they would be more than helpful! I’m mainly interested in libraries/bookshops, cultural sites, and cute cafes. Thanks!
Check out Nine Tree Premier Insadong (Nine Tree has multiple locations so make sure it’s the Insadong one). We’ve stayed there multiple times and it’s very minimalist but extremely functional/comfortable and walking/subway distance to Gwanghwamun Square but far enough out that it doesn’t feel super touristy. It’s part of a building that has a ton of food options too and a new renovated GS25. TripAdvisor reviews are pretty accurate: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g294197-d18185180-Reviews-Nine_Tree_Premier_Hotel_Insadong-Seoul.html
Thank you!
We stayed in Jongno/Insadong and loved it. So close to everything.
Second this! I also stayed here and it was the BEST location ever, close to everything. It's also really pretty.
I think this page could be useful for you. Just use your browser to translate it, it's well made.
Personally I'd suggest Hongdae or Jongno. I would avoid Myeongdong (always in Jongno) as it's too much tourists crowded, but it does worth a mention as it's well located.
Totally agree , I just stayed in Jongno at Prima Hotel which was great, Myeongdong is a way too crazy but from Jongno and Insadong you are close to everything but it's quieter. I loved my trip to Seoul, you guys are amazing!!!
Search the sub
There are three most commonly chosen areas to stay in Seoul: Central Seoul, western Seoul (Hongdae), and southeastern Seoul (Gangnam). Southwestern Seoul (Yeouido Park and Yeongdeungpo) and eastern Seoul (Seongsu-dong, Kondae, Daehangno, Ttukseom Hangang River Park, Seoul Forest) are also options.
- Jongno (Jongno-gu) (includes Insadong, Gwanghwamun Square, Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace. and two other palaces, Bukchon Hanok Village, Ikseon Hanok Village, the Blue House, Chonggyecheon),
- south of Jongno is Jung-gu (Myeongdong (Myeong-dong), Namdaemun (Hoehyeon-dong), Euljiro (Euljiro-dong), City Hall and Deoksogung Palace (Sogong-dong), Dongdaemun Design Plaza (Ssangnim-dong), Seoul Station (Hoehyeon-dong and Sogong-dong))
- south of Jung-gu is Yongsan (Yongsan-gu) (N-Seoul Tower (Yongsan 2(i)-ga-dong), Itaewon (Itaewon-dong), Haebongchon (Yongsan 2(il)-ga-dong and Yongsan 1(i)-ga-dong), Gyeongnidan (Itaewon-dong), Hannam-dong, National Museum of Korea (Ichon-dong), Yongsan Station (Hangangno-dong), Ichon Hangang River Park (Ichon 1(il)-dong)).
- next to the river Mapo-gu (Hongdae (Seogyo-dong, Hapjeong-dong, Seogang-dong), Yeonnam-dong, Hapjeong-dong, Mangwon-dong, World Cup Stadium (Sangam-dong), Mangwon Hangang River Park, Gyeongui Line Forest Park, Gongdeok-dong)
- north of Mapo-gu (Yonsei University, Ewha Womens University, and Sinchon (Sinchon-dong))
- Seocho-gu (west of Gangnam-gu) (Gangnam Station, Banpo Hangang River Park, Express Bus Terminal)
- Gangnam-gu (COEX, Sinsa, Apgujeong, Jamwon Hangang River Park)
- Songpa-gu (east of Gangnam-gu) (Jamsil-dong, Lotte World, Lotte World Tower, Olympic Park)
Wow that was really informative! Thanks!
My friends and I are going to Seoul end of March/Beginning of April. Does anyone have any recommendations for which neighborhood to stay in??
Depends on what the definition of best is. Like do you want accessibility to transport? Foreigner friendly? Rich neighborhood? Super traditional korean neighborhood? Ghetto but unique neighborhood?
I would say transportation/foreigner friendly are the most desired!
Where is the Ghetto but Unique neighborhood?
Places like 노량진, 신림, 대림 in my opinion
Depends on what you're going to be doing, but generally staying somewhere with quick and easy access to the No. 2 subway line is good.
If money isn't an option, I'd say close to Hongdae or Euljiro subway stops.
We’ll most be cafe hopping, going to bars and restaurants, maybe 1 or 2 nights clubbing (we aren’t really into that anymore) definitely being near a subway line would be ideal
Hongdae is perfect
I'm going to Korea for the first time late September and I was wondering what area of Seoul would be the best to stay in?
The most important thing is that I'm near public transportation as I'll be meeting my friends who live near/around Seoul most days I'm there. But it would be nice to live in an area that I could also enjoy alone.
Suggestions would be appreciated!
I’d say either Hongdae, Sinchon or Dongdaemun. If you are young, Hongdae definitely. Many people will tell you to stay in myeongdong but honestly I don’t like it that much, yeah it’s central but kinda very touristy and overpriced, and I think you don’t get the best “Korean” experience since most stores and food places try to cater to foreigners.
I'm 27, not sure if I'm still considered young haha. But thanks for the suggestion
Yeahh you are haha
I think it's better to stay in central Seoul to use a hotel or Airbnb. Myeongdong, Jongno, Itaewon, Hapjeong are all close by public transportation. Seoul has well-developed public transportation and is especially convenient to travel by subway.
I’ve stayed in both Myeongdong and Hongdae, and preferred Myeongdong for its relative proximity to most things.
I would suggest Myeongdong, due to it's central location, excellent public transportation access, and an abundance of shops, and restaurants.
I like Hapjeong because it’s near two subway lines. But the Myeongdong or Jongno area could be good with all the buses and subway stations nearby.
I love the vibes of Hapjeong but usually do day trips there. Did you do hotels or airbnbs?
I did an airbnb. It was a loft style unit in an apartment. It was also on the quieter side.. closer to the YG building
I loved staying in Hapjeong. Amazing subway access + Also within walking distance of Hongdae and the river.
I'm in Seoul 11-14 Jan on an extended layover, what's the best area to stay in for a first time visitor?
I'd planned to stay in Myeongdong but have been told it's not that good anymore. I'm interested in food, shopping and seeing some culture. I think most of my time will be spent walking/using the metro and maybe do a couple of tours.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hongdae is also amazing for food and overall constant liveliness, plenty of great shopping too. I personally always go for this neighborhood
Second this! We had a 30 hour layover in Seoul. Stayed in Hongdae and had an amazing time.
Just got back after 8 days in Seoul. Hongdae was my favorite area and I loved the RYSE hotel. Insadong was also nice and very peaceful. Gagnam was least favorite area I visited. I will definitely go back to see more of this beautiful country!
Just did Myeongdong for a week not far from the cable car point, at the beginning of the month.
Lots of food, lots of shopping, plenty of culture a little further north. You can always take the metro to other parts of the city if desired. Most stops are a few minutes apart.
Even if Myeongdong "isn't that good anymore" it's still centrally located and pretty close to some other touristy stuff. Gyeongbokgung and the N Seoul Tower are basically right next door for instance. If you're coming to Seoul for a general tourist experience I don't think you can go wrong with staying in Myeongdong.
This, the not being touristy isn't a bad thing lol. We are here now and it's close to EVERYTHING.
When I traveled to Korea, yes Myeongdong wasn't it's peak glory.
But you wanna know what it had? Decent food, centralized location, and MANY hotels to choose from.
I was able to visit Seoul tower and see a few of the national land marks when I was there which was nice.
But if you wanna go somewhere hip and trendy, try HongDae, if you want to go to a place with a LOT of foreigners Itaewon, if you want to just spend lots of money Gangnam.
If what you want to do is what you listed, then staying in Myeongdong wouldn't be a bad idea, additionally just be weary of the reviews for some places, TONS of them are compensated reviews and will probably falsely represent the actual quality of the place. Speaking from experience looking at google, agoda, and other American review sites.
Myeongdong is great to stay in, the food & shopping is unmatched
The food is better almost anywhere else and the shopping is about the same anywhere else. Hard disagree on this.
I would agree with this but the location is quite nice!
I’m going to Korea and wanted to see what neighborhood of Seoul y’all recommend I stay in based on my personal preferences/circumstances.
Listed:
I’m traveling solo and would prefer someplace where transportation is accessible and easier to navigate for an English-speaker. I’d like to be able to get around Seoul as easily as possible!
I’m more interested in food/culture and outdoors activities rather than nightlife. Specifically a place with a lot of cafes and potentially street food, and something easy to find a park or nature trails in. being close to some major landmarks wouldn’t hurt either!
because I’m not big on nightlife, I’d prefer something quieter.
Based on this, what would y’all recommend? Thanks in advance!
Why is no one mentioning Yongsan. We stayed near the Girls schools. You can get quickly to any other part of Seoul. Itaewon can be reached by foot or by bus. Many cute cafes, not too many people, Seoul Tower / Park is just infront of the door. Just no street food, but many random restaurants
I was gonna suggest this! If you end up staying in Yongsan area OP, try out Tortoise Cafe. It is in the area. Their soufflé pancakes are killer.
I also suggest PIZZA O. It’s a little expensive but its sooo good. Their pizza portions are huge.
I was there too :D
Also a lot of nice rooftop cafés, but the ones I visited are just nice for the beverages.
Use this Area Guide!
I highly recommend Wecostay Myeongdong!
Yeah i would second this . I was there last week and it should fit all your needs .
I enjoy walking , the main myengdong market area is less than a 30 min walk . There are two subway stations nearby for line 2 and 3 . Bus connections are also great ,took a bus to namsang and hongdae . The airport bus connection is also pretty near
Hi! How did you feel about the distance between Euljiro4 and Chungmuro station?
I have stayed twice at the Nine Tree in Insadong— amazing hotel!! The staff is super polite and informative, the train station is just down the street and there are bus stations right around it as well! I found it very easy to get around Seoul no problem! Also, there’s a big market thing attached to the hotel as well as behind the hotel on the street with lots of shops and some food stalls.
Edit to add: you mentioned not being big on nightlife so I also think this side of town would be nice as things seemed to quiet down once it got around 8-9pm! Also there’s a temple across the street which is pleasant to stroll in during the mornings or late evenings!
Hi, would you remember which train station is near this hotel? I'm looking at booking there. Is it also near the Airport Limousine bus stop?
The station I went to most frequently was Jong-gag, I think. Google maps is really helpful to see which stations are right around it! I want to say we typically walked about 10 mins to the station, give or take. It’s not that bad. And yes there is an airport limo. I believe it’s only about a 6 minute walk from the hotel. Off the top of my head I can’t remember the bus stop number but we had asked the information desk which # it was for that hotel and they found it for us. :) it was about 17k won per person I think.
Edit: edit for clarify. Also, after quick search, I found that the bus # is 6015 according to a question answered on their booking.com page.
im currently in seoul, staying in the ibis styles ambassador in myeongdong and am really liking it. myeongdong is pretty central (very close to namsan) and our hotel is close to the station. its also convenient for shopping + food (myeongdong market). it is a bit touristy tho imo
Ibis Styles! Lol we were just there last Saturday. We’re in Jeju now. Hope you’re liking it!
33yo female, looking for neighborhood recommendations for a weeklong stay in Seoul. I typically like to stay in areas that are a bit less crowded than the main touristic spots, and have more of a residential family-friendly feel while still being well-connected via public transit and with of nice options for cafes, parks, restaurants, etc. Nightlife/retail shopping is not important to me.
For reference, I like to stay in the following neighborhoods in other cities:
Tokyo: Shimokita
NYC: Brooklyn Heights
Paris: Porte-Saint-Martin
London: Stoke Newington, Hackney
CDMX: Coyoacán
I would recommend anywhere near the old city center. Areas like Gwanghwamun, Jongro, Euljiro, and places around there. It’s really the center of Seoul and a lot of the tourist areas, but if you get a place that’s a bit far away to avoid crowds, you can get to the other areas quite easily because of the subway system (download the Subway Korea app).
I just got back from a trip to Seoul with my daughter. We stayed in Mangwon and loved it. It is residential with lots of cute cafes, is near to the river and close to Hongdae. We travelled out and about to other areas using the bus and metro, so no issues with transport links.
Jongno area is nice. It’s near the palace complex area but is also a business district.
I say Hapjeong. You’re close to lots of food, cafes, Han River and not far from Hongdae and the Mangwon area. It’s quieter than Hongdae and Yeonnamdong but still a lot going on. Plus there’s the airport bus that takes you straight to Incheon
Insadong was great for me. Close to the subway but walking distance from cute shops, cafes and hanok villages
Planning a trip to Seoul in October, we are researching places to stay with 3 adults and 2 kids (2yr old and 6mo old). Looking at Airbnb’s in Myeongdong so far as we will need at least 3 bedrooms and two bathrooms. Looking for safe area that has places open late since we’ll be jet lagged and may need to run to get things like milk, diapers, etc. Which neighborhoods would be recommended if we need to be walking distance from family friendly restaurants, stores, and public transportation?
We stayed at a serviced apartment in Somerset Palace near Insadong. It was very convenient though rooms were a bit dated. Would still 100%recommend
Gangnam, Jamsil and basically every place south of the river is your best bet for safety IMHO. There are crazy people everywhere but since they are more "expensive" areas, they are at the very least cleaner and the roads more accessible since they are so large (they were built after the Japanese occupation).
Try UH suite
This place is nice. We stayed at the one in Jongno with kids. I recommend it.
White Linen House is a beautiful guest house I stayed in in Sinsa. Close to everything. Has an elevator. Super large rooms with seating area, washer dryer and kitchenette
Myeongdong will be good if you are looking for accessibility, Gangnam and Seongsu are also good options if it fits your budget
I am heading to Seoul and I need a neighborhood to stay in....any recommendations? esp solo budget accommodations but not a hostel :)
I always stay in myeongdong area at shin shin hotel, though i think its been renamed. Rooms were clean and are always around $50-60 US
Sinchon, find a love motel. There's one with a Spiderman statue that has a glowing penis, pick that one.
If anything pick a neighborhood just outside of where you want to spend time. I like staying outside of itaewon personally, nice place to party and it's centrally located.
Hotel Rian is a 3 star business hotel that is sometimes priced as low as US$65 a night. It has close walking access to metro stations on the 2/3/5 lines
Insadong
I always liked staying at the Hyatt in Itaewon.
Just a short trip down to all the bars and shopping.
I’m travelling to Seoul in April, 2 adults and 16 year old son. What’s the best district to stay? Interested in food, culture, history. Not really bars and clubs. Tia
Central Seoul. Myeongdong, Jongno area. He will see too many adult things in Hongdae haha. Gangnam too far for daily tourist hopping around.
Hongdae is awesome lol, for Americans Itaewon is definitely great to stay at or Myeongdong for sure.
I stayed in Myeongdong, and loved it!! So much restaurant and malls, and very accessible to transportation!
Everyday after 5pm, they have streets food vendors at the myeongdong noon square!
Thank you!
I personally loved Sotetsu Fresa Inn in Myeongdong so so much
Euljiro-3, easiest. You can literally walk to Insadong or the palaces if the weather is good and you need to clock in some steps.
Thanks, I love walking!
Walking in Seoul is a whole other thing though 😅 (Euljiro is fine but have fun doing that for an extended period in Itaewon, Gangnam, etc).
I really hope you like to climb stairs as well.
Jongno, but not myeongdong is my vote. North of myeongdong is best.
Thank you!
Anywhere really. Public transport is quite excellent
Looking for some ideas for areas to stay in Seoul first week of June - 1 adult and 2 kids ( 13 and 10 ) . We did Japan last year and from that I realized that ideally we would like a 5 - 7 min walk to the train , and a few convenience stores/supermarket nearby. For the train stop - not to be in a very busy area but close enough where main attractions are not too far to travel. My kids were exhausted from all the walking to and through the subway so I want us to be able to get back to the hotel with a quick walk !!! Bonus point if there’s some shopping or an Olive Young nearby for me 😊.
I recommend downloading kakaometro if you haven’t yet. Find a station that is above the river, somewhat central, and has 2-3 subway lines running through it. That would be your best bet. Also using naver maps or kakao maps to search for olive young’s, convenience stores (type 편의점 ), and marts (마트). Olive young and convenience stores are usually close to subway stations in my experience and the tourist areas will also have olive young so you don’t need to worry much about finding an accommodation near one
Somewhere near Mapo station? There's an Oliveyoung nearby and the station is close enough to some hotels.
When I was in Seoul I stayed in Yeouido-dong (specifically at the Kensington Hotel in my case, but there are other hotels too). It's just south of the Han and when I was there it was definitely quieter but not totally dead. There's a subway station and you can take Line 5 to get very close to some attractions (the Gwanghwamun station is quite close to Gyeongbokgung Palace, the national museum, and the western tip of Cheonggyecheon stream, for example). Yeouido-dong definitely has some convenience stores and you'd be walking distance to an Olive Young and the Hyundai Seoul for shopping.
Others may have better ideas, but it could be worth looking into!
