What Redditors are Saying

Best Travel Apps for Safety

TL;DR

  • Smartraveller for Australian travelers [2:1]
  • Local embassy apps and English newspapers for updates [2:6]
  • Grab and MyBluebird for safe transportation in Southeast Asia [5:1]

Safety Alerts and Updates

For travelers looking to stay informed about safety risks, several options are available. Smartraveller is an app recommended for Australians traveling abroad, providing country-specific alerts [2:1]. Additionally, signing up with your local embassy can provide important updates, and following English newspapers or social media platforms like TikTok can offer real-time information about potential risks [2:6].

Transportation Safety

In Southeast Asia, apps like Grab and MyBluebird are essential for safe transportation. Grab offers ride-hailing and food delivery services across many Southeast Asian countries, while MyBluebird is a reliable taxi service in Indonesia, especially useful for airport transfers and odd-hour bookings [5:1][5:3]. These apps allow users to compare prices and ensure secure payment methods, enhancing travel safety.

Offline Maps and Translation

Having offline maps and translation tools can significantly improve safety during travel. Google Maps allows users to download specific areas for offline navigation, while http://Maps.me and OSMand Maps specialize in offline map usage [4:8]. Google Translate, with offline language packages, ensures communication even in regions with limited English speakers [5:2].

General Travel Organization

Apps like TripIt help organize complex itineraries, ensuring travelers have all necessary details at their fingertips [1:2]. This organization can prevent confusion and enhance safety by keeping travelers informed of their plans and accommodations. Additionally, using apps like FlightAware can help track flights and avoid unexpected delays [1:5].

Additional Considerations

While these apps provide valuable tools for safety, travelers should also consider other factors such as local customs, emergency contacts, and health advisories. It's wise to research the destination thoroughly and prepare accordingly, using technology as a supportive tool rather than the sole source of information.

I still can’t get Flight to replace TripIt for me. Sure it’s prettier, but Flighty is really aimed at aviation-heads rather than general travelers. For flight status, I still find FlightAware more reliable than Flighty too. So those two apps are my go to.

Flighty is only an iOS app for now. It’s super amazing, but the dev team is taking their time creating an Android version. They do have an official waitlist, but with a dev team of only four, I expect it might be a long wait.

If you travel internationally at all, and/or to big cities where public transport is the order of the day, Citymapper is an absolute must.

Airalo for cheap roaming data (again if going international).

If you need this, you probably are either super skiddish or going to go to someplace that you already know is dangerous so you want to know the upto the minute info (like a war zone).

Otherwise if you follow the US state department travel advisories the majority of the world is'dangerous'

Genuinely curious, not sarcastic. Where are you going that this is needed? If it's sudden and serious, I feel like it's ubiquitous and hard not to know.

Most other places with advisories just aren't as sketchy as government pages say they are.

Everywhere else that this isn't the case I suspect you shouldn't be.

When I studied abroad to Germany my university made everyone sign up with this paid by the University app that gave out country specific alerts.

I got alerts about domestic terrorism a few times because this was back in 2017 when all the van crowd and ariana grande concert bombing stuff was happening.

5 upvotes on reddit
J
jtrom1010 · 2 years ago

That makes sense but isn't that a fringe case? And it's also kind of my point.

Germany is never gonna be a place you'll consciously need to think about that, and I suspect if you were in Germany at the time of a one off event like that you wouldn't have needed the safety alerts to know it was happening.

Not trying to rebuttal you specifically, not even really OP, I just think it's worth mentioning that risk alerts are overwhelmingly misleading or unnecessary in most cases.

4 upvotes on reddit
I
its_a_gibibyte · 2 years ago

Sure, but domestic terrorism is a great example. Because they arent known in advance, theres rarely an opportunity to do anything to improve safety. After a terrorist attack for example, many people will flee the city, but it's usually pretty rare for that to save any lives.

Your local embassy sign up

English newspapers

Honestly, TikTok (if it's not go-controlled or social media in general) is one of the best ways to get immediate up-to-date info about things as they happen. You can follow people who live in the country who speak your language before you fo. Or you can search for news using hashtags like #expatin(country you are in) #news #breakingnews #countryname #cityname.

In my personal experience breaking news that has safety issues travels way faster on Tiktock than even local news channels and often people will stream and post immediately after or during an event.

the best example I have of this is (thatI experienced) in South Korea and it took 8 hours for news in english to be reported about The Itawon crowd crush and 2-4 hours for it to even be reported in Korean. On TikTok people were posting videos to stay away from the area/to leave the area even before the incident because of how crowded things were and within 10-30 min after the incident occurred people were blowing up the #korea with reports of something happening even though they were not sure what it was.

Hello! Looking for recommendations on apps that are useful when travelling. I'm going to Europe but keen to see what other apps people use around the world.

So far I have:

  • Forcea (weather)

  • Spotted by Locals (bars, food, sights, apparently collected by locals)

  • Google translate (obviously!)

Thanks for that tip. I usually do a “end-of-the-line” public transport trip to see what cool ransom things I can find…. I get on a random bus, train, metro, tram and ride it to the end of the line… and see what’s there. Had some awesome adventures and seen some cool things. This sounds like the app version of that 😀

Totally…. I found that some don’t let you “do” anything until you’re actually in the country…. for instance I was just in malaysia and the Grab app would not let me add any payment details until after I landed and they detected I was “in country”…. was simple to do.. but frustrating that I couldn’t be organised before I left… which I like to be 😀

Have offline maps - you can download specific areas in Google maps. More specialized for offline are maps.me, OSMand Maps.

Have your country's travel advisory app for some offline contacts at embassies.

Google translate - dowload offline translation packages for languages you might need

It's not perfect and can't compete with Google Maps if you have internet. But a good tool in general. Currently my needs are covered with Google Maps (online and offline) and OSM maps. In some specific areas maps.me is superior, but other apps have caught up in the recent years.

Grab: Ride hailing app, direct competitor of/equivalent to Gojek. Also has food delivery option. Useful for price comparison so you can get the best fare. Also take CC, and is useful/in operation across many SEA countries (eg Thailand, Singapore)

MyBluebird: App for Bluebird offline taxi and the best taxi provider in Indonesia. Particularly useful if you are looking for reliable transport (e.g. to/from airports, odd hours). Can do booking/schedule your ride ahead of time, and can take CC.

Aside: Only take Bluebird taxi wherever you go. Avoid other offline taxi brand like the plague (exception goes to the online ride hailing apps mentioned above i.e. Grab/Gojek)

"Must have is a bit too wide". It very much depends on what kind of traveler you are, what kind of counties you go and for how long.

Let's say almost ALL apps for the rest of the world are useless in China.

I do not use paper at all and have about 400 apps for travelling. Mains are:

  1. Tripit - historically use this one for all itineraries.

  2. Google.translate, yandex.translate, Reverso Context for translation.

  3. Google maps, yandex maps, mapy.cz, maps.me, motionx-gps, Guru maps, Organic Maps - for navigation

  4. Parkopedia, INRIX ParkMe - for parkings

  5. PrivateVPN, PlanetVPN, Outline, VPN Beaver - for VPN. In lots of countries you cannot do anything without. Like you can't use Skype in India, google in China, any ip-telephony in Egypt and Eritrea, Cuba etc.

6)Booking, Agoda, Hotels.com, HRS, Airbnb, OYO, Expedia, Hotel Tonight and all main hotel chains apps

  1. Rome2Rio and Train Apps for every country you go if you go trains. Every country tube maps too

  2. SplitWise for counting shared expenses if you go by group

  3. rentalcars, Arguscarhire, qeeq, immova and all main rental cars providers apps Hertz, Europcar, Avis etc.

  4. Weather apps - Aurora Alerts, Wheather Pro, WunderGround, Windy... and SurfLine for waves and tides.

  5. apps for telemedicine, depends on your home country and health insurance.

  6. Ornament - to keep all your medical data in case you need a doctor.

  7. Skyscanner, Aviasales, Expedia, Kayak, trip.com, kiwi.com for looking for a flight + all main airlines apps.

  8. LoungeKey, Prioritypass, DragonPass, Mile-on-air - for airlounge access.

  9. Uber, Yandex Go, Gett, Bolt, BlaBlaCar, InDrive, FoTaxi, Didi, Careem - for Taxi

  10. Wise, Revolut etc - for travel neobanks.

  11. Google.drive, OneDrive etc - for keeping all you documents on a cloud

  12. FlightRadar24 for looking at flight route.

  13. ViaMichelin for finding nice routes

  14. Airalo, MobiMatter, Yesim, Drimsim, Eskimo, Ubigi - for travel eSIM

And I just scratched the surface.

For China, Egypt and many other countries you'll need a full bunch of different apps.

Location/commute tracking apps for safety?

Posted by mishmoshing · in r/TwoXChromosomes · 2 years ago

I’ll be starting work in an urban environment soon with no car for commute. It’s looking like public transportation and walking for me. Are there any app suggestions for ensuring a safe commute, such as location tracking for when I start and end my commute? I’ve heard of things like Noonlight and was wondering if others used it. I’m also open to self defense suggestions like pepper spray. For more context, I’m a petite Asian American moving to the Bronx thinking of walking 30 minutes to work.

Life360 I think sends a message saying something like, "Todd has started driving!" so I think that probably would work. I think you just have to make some sort of network and invite people so there's obviously someone who can see the start/stopped driving things.

Looking for a personal safety app recommendations

Posted by RedditVirgin007 · in r/androidapps · 4 years ago

I have been searching the internet and reviewing the personal safety apps (like Safety Beacon, My SOS Family etc.) available on play store, all of them have great features but none of them is offering a feature that I am looking for.

Here is a summary of feature that I am looking for in a personal safety app

  • As a user I should be able to schedule safety check-ins
  • Based on the above schedule, app should send me the notification checking for my safety
  • If I respond to the notification in positive everything should be good
  • If I do not respond or respond in negative it should send alerts to my pre-configured contacts

Does anyone know if there is an app that offers a feature like above or something similar?

So what are these new gps tracking safety protocols?

35M; was 34 yesterday🎂. Anyway... I have a date tomorrow to get ready for! Reading the stories here and at OLD brought up safety protocols that I hadn't heard of before. I'm familiar with the basics of sharing your time & place itinerary with a friend and having check-ins, but what's this GPS tracking thing you can do for yourself? How can I do that thing? Not sure I want to implement it, but I'll try it out as I get more active in dating again. Thank you.

This method only works if both parties are Apple users, but I share my iPhone location with my best friend and she’s able to pull up exactly where I am on the map. It’s easy and has never glitched out on us. If I don’t send a check in text by a specified time, she can see if I (or at least my phone) am still at the date spot or if I’ve moved… which I would have told her about. Definitely adds some peace of mind to know someone can easily find you if needed!

ReignQK · 3 years ago

(34F) I have my best girlfriend keep all the information for every date until I’m comfortable with someone. I give her their number, name, where we are going, drive my own car to meet in a public place, text when I leave/get home and she tracks my iPhone (there are third party apps if this isn’t an option). If something goes strange or happens then she knows to inform people. I am a private person, so it’s hard to give all the info out about what I’m doing, but she’s that person I would tell anyways. It sounds like a lot, but my brother is a sheriff and I worked for our county’s sexual assault center….it’s not alot…not even close, for the safety. The things we have seen and heard make it easy to remember why all the safety measures are needed for everyone.

You are really smart for having this practice. Does your friend also know to do something if you don't check in by a certain time? I did everything you did, especially after my divorce, because I have kids to think about now and they need their mama.

It scares the hell out of me that so many young women (early to mid 20s) don't realize how vulnerable they are and the massive risk they're taking by allowing complete strangers pick them up at their home for first or second dates, inviting them into their homes, inviting complete strangers to their homes for sex without knowing them right off the bat (basically, matching with guys and immediately, or only talking for a day or two, having them over for sex). I can go on. It really scares me. And they ignore people who say anything, believing that just because they talk to these for a few days they can be trusted to not have dangerous ulterior motives. I'm sad to say that I'm often not surprised when someone is raped by someone on a first date when they allowed a stranger into their home because they thought they could trust them. Or when someone ends up being harassed and stalked by a guy after the first date and he knows where she lives.

Yep, she knows to let my brother know. I am the same way, was married my entire 20s and have my kids to think about. So this might seem weird, but no guy is allowed to come to my home or know where I live until we have been together for awhile. (Needless to say I’ve only dated 1 man that has seen where I live). I just won’t take the risks especially with my children involved. Single mothers are a huge target for predators. However, I have only dated one guy who had a problem with it and that was a red flag for me.
