TL;DR Exfoliation and moisturizing are key. Products containing glycolic acid, salicylic acid, urea, and AHAs are commonly recommended.
Exfoliation Techniques
Exfoliating regularly is a common strategy to manage keratosis pilaris (KP). Many users recommend using both physical and chemical exfoliants. Physical exfoliants like dry brushes or exfoliating mitts can help remove dead skin cells [3:4],
[4:3]. Chemical exfoliants such as glycolic acid and lactic acid are also popular choices
[1],
[2:4],
[4:1]. The Ordinary's glycolic toner and body stick were mentioned as effective products
[1].
Moisturizing with Active Ingredients
Moisturizers containing active ingredients like urea and salicylic acid are frequently recommended for KP. Urea helps to soften and hydrate the skin, while salicylic acid aids in exfoliation [4:4]. Eucerin Roughness Relief and Gold Bond Rough & Bumpy lotion are popular choices among users
[4:2],
[5:1]. AmLactin, which contains lactic acid, is another option that some find effective
[4:8].
Alternative Approaches
Some users have found unconventional methods helpful, such as using meat tenderizer as a scrub due to its fruit enzyme content [5:11],
[5:12]. Additionally, maintaining a healthy diet and getting adequate sunlight can improve the appearance of KP
[3:2],
[5:9].
Managing Expectations
It's important to recognize that KP is a genetic condition and treatments may not completely eliminate it [2:2]. Some users have accepted their KP and focus on minimizing its appearance rather than eliminating it entirely
[2:6],
[5:6]. Regular maintenance through exfoliation and moisturizing can help keep symptoms under control.
Product Recommendations
For those seeking specific product recommendations, Cerave SA Smoothing Cleanser, Naturium KP body scrub, and The Inkey List glycolic acid exfoliating body stick are suggested by users who have seen improvements [1]. First Aid Beauty KP scrub and The Ordinary's mandelic acid are also mentioned as effective options
[5:2],
[5:3].
Hi everyone, just thought I'd drop a post in to share the products and methods I use because I've noticed a real improvement over the last month. I have found that doing a gentle scrub pretty much every day keeps the KP at bay, and products wise I use:
I don't use all of these products every time, but I do use all at least twice a week. I feel so much softer and smoother so I had to share ☺️
Which exfoliating mitt do u use?
Most people don't have issues with the bumps and roughness. They have issue with the red dots.
Does this treat the redness and bumps or just the bumps?
Mostly bumps but the redness is less obvious too. I sometimes use a light and moisturising fake tan to even out my overall skin tone.
I'm 20 and been struggling with KP on my arms my whole life. After my 2nd round of accutane I've started to develop KP on my cheeks. Dealing with it for 3 month now. I tried co2 laser and PDL and have'nt seen results yet. Do you have any products to recommend?
It’s not to get you’re hopes down, but since it’s a condition that is expressed from within our own genes, then no topical/laser/peels completely move these bumps. They will most likely come back.
However you can probably keep them as minimized as possible with somenthing
I have learned to just accept mine
Good luck 😎
Totally get that. Just trying to do what I can to manage it. Appreciate the honesty!
I'm in the same boat as you, but 36M. Developed it after Accutane. Have tried IPL, Excel V Laser as well as topical Ivermectin, Hydrocortisone, Protopic and Elidel with no help.... I have another dermatologist appointment Monday and will be asking for Sirolimus Cream
Me too!!!!!!!!! But I’m 28F!
Was diagnosed again with rosacea but no for a fact it's not. Going to be trying VBeam after azelaic acid for doxycycline for a few weeks
I think glycolic acid from the ordinary works good, i’ve personally had good results.
Thanks! I hope It'll work :,)
Topical retinoid and a moisturizer with urea really helped my facial kp post Accutane.
Hey everyone,
I’ve been dealing with Keratosis Pilaris for a while now, and I’m really hoping to hear from anyone who has experience with getting rid of the bumps and the marks they leave behind.
My KP is mostly on my arms, legs, back and butt cheek and it’s not just the rough bumps, but also the red/brown marks that stay even after the bumps go down. It’s really affecting my confidence, especially during the warmer months.
If you’ve had a similar type of KP and were able to treat or significantly improve it, could you please share: • What products or routine worked best for you? • How long it took to see results? • Any specific ingredients I should look for or avoid? • Tips for dealing with the discoloration and scarring?
I’m open to both drugstore and more natural/home remedies. Just really looking for honest, real experiences from people who understand. 🙏
Thanks in advance!
do you eat a lot of carbs or fatty foods? if your diet is bad, KP can get worse. My KP was very bad when i was overweight and after I lost the weight it got SIGNIFICANTLY better!
Please use the search function and find pictures of similar KP and see what they did or frequent this sub more and read more posts.
You have to try things, take before and after pictures so our community can get a better idea of what they can recommend.
This is my arm looks. Tried everything, almost all otc aids as well nothing seems to work. I went to a beauty clinic to see if they can laser it, they said they do not recommend it.
I think mine also used to be this red, both physically and chemically exfoliating really helped. For physical I use a dry brush and exfoliating net, chemical I use lactic acid and glycolic acid sometimes AHA’s. I alternate each day tho, so one day I’ll dry brush and sometimes use an acid, another day I’ll use the net and an acid. Honestly i just do whatever depending on how sensitive my skin feels, but I at least try to physically exfoliate every day. Oh and good moisturizer every day, and sunscreen too even if I’m not going out. The Ordinary has the acids I use for pretty cheap, the rest is drugstore. I’ve also tried double cleansing in the shower, so bar soap first then a body wash, one with salicylic or glycolic acid work well too. I’ve been pretty consistent everyday and the discolouration is practically gone, but I’m still working through the bumps which are nearly flattened tbh. Wow this is long 😭, hope it helps !
I'm just curious when you say you've been dealing with KP "for a while now" when did the KP appear? I've read here it's genetic and most people have had it for as long as they can remember. There's been a lot of opinions that KP can occur post Accutane. I saw my dermatologist recently who said that's false and is misinformation. Just trying to understand the route of your problem?
It just started when I turned 24 - more than a year now, nearly two years. I have consulted several doctors and all they recommend is to keep my skin moisturized - which I always do but makes no difference. It’s becoming so frustrating that I do not want to wear shirts and shorts anymore :(
It's so weird how it just started. I had very clear body skin like never a pimple etc all my life and it just started at 41 years old. No rhythm or reason. And it's not genetic. No one else has this in my family. It's so frustrating. I'm very fair naturally but the one thing that made it totally disappear was walking every day in the sun with SPF on of course. It vanished but unfortunately came back.
Mine is worse and on my butt and thighs. I have an appointment in December to see the dermatologist to start accutane. I have spent thousands on otc suggestions. It’s hard to know how long. I’ve had little bumps as long as I can remember but it hasn’t been really bad until this fall as far as I know. I really don’t look where it is all that often.
Hi all,
I’m 35 and never had KP on my arms before, noticed a month or so ago that I had patches of it on my arms, it’s not red or discolored but very rough to the touch. I’ve heard glycolic acid toner is good but any favorite remedies and has anyone experienced the same in their 30s?
I use exfoliating lotion with urea (the Eucerin Roughness Relief) and rotating it with one that has glycolic and lactic acid.
Korean exfoliating mitts have helped me more than lotions. Don’t overdo it, though. 1-2 a week is enough.
Urea cream 40% with 2% salicylic acid gets rid of it in like two uses and then glycolic toner or body wash keeps it gone.
What brand do you use?
I’ve used four from Amazon and haven’t been able to tell a difference so I go with whatever is cheapest. I’ll spend on the stuff where it matters. Here it does not seem to.
AmLactin
I think this is one my sister uses! it burned my skin though
glycolic toner from the ordinary. it’s literally a holy grail product lol
I occasionally get it, and I’ll either use a scrub or some salicylic acid wash, then glycolic toner swiped on with my hands (only at night), and moisturize it typically clears it up pretty quick.
my sister in her 20s has had pretty severe kp since she was a teenager. she will use kp specific lotions/creams that contain a variety of acids and/or urea. you could try one of those too, but they might be a little strong, depending on your skin sensitivity.
There are multiple active ingredients mentioned when it comes to KP, from salicylic acid to AHAs and Urea. What are your favorite products? Do you prefer any specific ingredient for tackling either texture or appearance of KP?
I've looked around and haven't found any up to date talks about this, so I figured let's chat about it!
The first aid KP scrub has cleared mine up really quickly!! My husband even started using it and its working for him too.
Edit to add: the active ingredient in the first aid scrub is AHA
I use these nightly, straight out of the shower, and it does nothing. But my KP is relentless. I have tried everything for weeks/months at a time and everything just makes it more red and irritated-- AmLactin, Gold Bond with urea, prescription tret-- you name it I've tried it. I've just accepted my fate at this point.
I did the TO red stuff every other day (can't remember the percentage of acids) and at first it was pretty irritated, but after my skin got used to it, the KP patch feels a lot better. Nowadays I use TO mandelic acid 10% every day and occasionally the red stuff. My KP is on my wrist, but on the outside
We’re in the same boat, over the past 7-8 years I’ve tried every combination of physical/chemical exfoliation, body lotion, special body wash, tret, sulfur, and even laser hair removal but my kp still haunts me to this very day. I shed a few tears every time I see someone say they got rid of theirs with a few weeks of amlactin or gold bond rough and bumpy .
Exfoliation is this crap bell curve where too much or too little equals KP and at the high point the KP is never completely gone. F.
I posted about it lower down but this was me for htg 16 years until like two weeks ago when I started using meat tenderizer as a scrub in the shower. I shit you not, it will change your life. Strides, urea, amlactin, GB rough and bumpy, none of it ever worked for me til motherflipping MEAT TENDERIZER. I means, it’s basically just a fruit enzyme peel but combined with a lil scrub action and with a delectable price tag too.
I wish I had something new to add to this topic, but I find good ol' 10% urea has been the best for keeping my skin as smooth as possible considering my KP is relatively severe. I've jumped around with brands and I find it doesn't matter what cream I use.
Yeah, mine is pretty severe too. At this point I just make sure I moisturize every day and exfoliate in the shower. The extra sunlight in the summer always helps too--my arms are looking pretty smooth and even-toned these days (for me!).
Lmao how did you know I was at a game night tonight taking about how I still use this and it’s THE thing that cured my KP????
When I use it daily, the Gold Bond Rough & Bumpy lotion works well to reduce the redness and texture of the KP on my upper arms. It has AHA, BHA, and urea and is $10 for a tub that lasts me several months. I haven’t tried it on any other part of my body for KP but I do use it along my bikini line a few times a week to minimize any bumps/irritation and ingrown hair. Glad this discussion is being updated! I’ll be following!
This sounds awesome! I've actually wondered if anything can be done about the redness, so this sounds promising. How expensive is the lotion for you? I'm in Europe and it's about 35€ for 8oz which is definitely a bit stretch for me Sadly :(
I’ve had KP since puberty, and that combined with my picking compulsion has meant scans and bumps on my arms constantly for 16 years. Today, for the first time since I was 12, my arms are completely blemish free, and smooth as a baby’s ass thanks to MEAT TENDERIZER. I saw it in the spice aisle a couple weeks ago while grocery shopping, remembered it from SCA days of yore (c. 2014/15?), and decided to give it a go. Ingredients were sugar, salt, bromelain (pineapple enzymes), maltodextrin. I figured at worst it’d be a salt/sugar scrub. When I tell you that my skin has been utterly changed, I am not speaking hyperbolically. This shit is LIT and like $1.49. I just scrub it on in the shower every other day and leave for like a minute, then rinse. I also have been using it on my face with great results but I do it for less time.
Looking for ways to help my KP on my arms. I’ve seen on TikTok some remedies like using a dry brush and using glycolic acid. Urea cream/lotion. Tell me what worked for you. What should I try? What brands? Lotions, toners, and what to wash with. Help! I need all the tips and advice you can throw at me.
My arms look like this and I feel self conscious because it looks like acne and I'm also a skin picker so it's really hard to resist popping them. I've tried 10% urea lotion daily but it doesn't seem to have an effect on them, just moisturises my skin. Urea is supposed to be kerolytic so I'm annoyed it doesn't do anything for my KP. Commenting to hopefully see advice from others, good luck OP
Hopefully someone can give us some recommendations!
I should add that my dermatologist (a really good one) said the trick to KP is less emphasis on exfoliation and more about moisturising the skin. As yours seems raised like mine rather than just flat dots on the skin, I would strongly advise against physical exfoliation on the areas. I think this does more harm than good and inflames the area. Instead, chemical exfoliants like salicylic acid or azaelic acid could be more gentle exfoliation options. Recently I've started using the CeraVe salicylic acid cleanser in the shower. I let it sit on my skin for about 3-5 minutes to let it work before rinsing off. I'm not sure if it's helping me much, maybe it's just too soon to say, but this is often recommended on the sub. Always avoid hot showers/baths as this dries out the skin. Instead, tepid water is ideal. I would also pat your skin dry with a towel instead of rubbing it. Finally, while your skin is still damp, you should apply a moisturiser, like one with urea as this is supposed to break down keratin while moisturising the skin. I hope this will work for you but sadly it seems to do nothing beneficial for my kp. You've probably seen stuff about SmoothKP on this sub - maybe give this a try if you're not seeing any improvements with the methods stated above. The downside is it's really expensive for the amount you get, although I understand the creator is working on reducing costs.
Finally, I hope you don't let it get to you too much. Even though it's somewhat ironic coming from me, who is deeply insecure about it, it really is nothing to be ashamed of. This skin condition affects a shockingly high % of the population and my derm told me that most people don't look at skin this closely or even notice this type of thing. If anything they just look like little freckles! Good luck on your skin journey and remember you aren't alone <3
My forearms look literally identical to yours. I’ve been using Amlactin cream a few times a day and it’s helped with the bumpiness.
It makes me so insecure that I don’t like wearing short-sleeved shirts :(
I’ve tried literally everything, AmLactin, everything that’s ever been made and marketed specifically towards KP. The ONLY thing that’s almost completely resolved it consistent use-like 4 times a week- of Gytone lotion (it’s 17 % glycolic acid). I buy it from Dermstore. I usually get it in a set with a scrubbie that I toss in the trash as it’s too abrasive, and a glycolic acid body wash that I only use in preparation for shaving. I can’t recommend this combo enough, but sunscreen is so so so important while using it. I got a 2nd degree sunburn on vacation once because I didn’t re-apply often enough. Good luck, it’s such a frustrating thing to deal with.
Hi! Did this routine help w redness?
You might consider this routine. I’ve only had KP once in the past on my forearms & this is what worked for me:
Cleanser/physical exfoliant with AHA: (use in shower 1-3x/week) - First Aid Beauty KP Bump Eraser Body Scrub with 10% AHA (glycolic acid and lactic acid)
You can also use exfoliating gloves in the shower. If you use them, start out with once/week; be very gentle & very lightly rub your skin with whatever body wash you normally use. You don’t want to be too harsh & irritate your skin. I love them! They leave my entire body so soft. And I always use them BEFORE shaving my legs. I think using these gloves for gentle physical exfoliation is what prevented my KP from returning.
Exfoliant: (apply to clean skin 1-3x/week) - The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution
Moisturizer: (apply DAILY after shower to slightly damp skin or after the glycolic acid) - CeraVe SA Lotion For Rough & Bumpy Skin or the CeraVe SA Cream For Rough & Bumpy Skin (salicylic acid & lactic acid). You want to keep your skin moisturized. If your skin is dry, reapply the moisturizer 2-3 times/day.
I could not tolerate the smell of AmLactin, yet use it if it works for you.
If these over-the-counter products don’t work after 2-3 months of regular use, you might consider consulting a dermatologist.
Hope this is helpful! 😊
So I would use the Ordinary toner and then the CeraVe after? I currently use KP body scrub and CeraVe and I am noticing a difference!
Yes, you can use TO glycolic toner & then apply the CeraVe SA lotion or cream on top. ☺️
I no longer have KP & still use the glycolic toner on my body. It works great!
Hi! Did this routine help with your redness?
Hi! Did this help with the redness?
First aid beauty kp body scrub eraser
Been dealing with this my whole life so I feel you. I’ve had great success with nylon exfoliating towels and hammam gloves. I use one or the other and they work about the same. Both work better if I’ve been in a hot shower/bath for a few minutes before exfoliating. I find the gloves/mitt style works best on wet skin without soap, but I like to lather soap with the towels.
Using a new razor more frequently and body wash with a chemical exfoliant helps as well. I like Cerave Renewing SA Cleanser.
Exfoliates! I got the EcoTools one from Ulta, I think it was like $5
I started using a dry brush head to toe before showering and shaving and it has helped A LOT
Hopefully you see a difference soon. Good luck! 😊
I would appreciate any suggestions!
My KP was caused by gluten intolerance 😅 I use to use body scrubs and lotions and they never worked. I went gluten free for a different reason and it ended up being the cause for me. You can have a sensitivity to it without being celiac. It's typically genetic. Otherwise, The hair follicules get extra keratin sometime too, causing KP, so use body wash and lotions that have lactic acid, vitamin A(retinol), ferrulic acid, or glycolic acid. And increase your food intake containing vitamin A. Just thought to bring it up!
Thank you for posting this! My doctor told me today gluten or dairy intolerance could be causing it. Excited to see. Glad you found relief.
Can I ask how long it took after removing gluten from your diet to notice a difference?
Salux or any other exfoliating nylon washcloth. I have KP over my arms and shoulders, so I can scrub pretty hard at it without issue. I've found the physical exfoliation helps clear the way for the chemical exfoliators to have more of an effect.
This is what I use as well. I also apply rich body creams and butter to the KP areas because, for me at least, the KP is a side-effect of very dry skin. As long as I moisturize properly, the KP stays away.
What creams or body butters do you recommend?
You're welcome! Another sign of a wheat/gluten issue besides kp is often rosacea, or deep redness/rash in the face and swelling that doesnt seem to go away with skincare or medicine/herbs.
I didn't either, skin and stomach are more connected than we realize. I didn't know until I cut gluten out because of chronic fatigue syndrome and ibs. But lo and behold it also was the culprit for my many skin issues. 😅 sometimes our skin issues is a telling of something our gut isn't digesting well or is causing inflamation. I'll break out when I accidentally eat it and get kp on my arms and chest. It can develop randomly or due to stress, even antibiotics, if it isn't genetic.
I've had it on my arms my whole life, my bf suggested coconut oil to moisture about a year ago and it's amazing
I'm glad you mentioned this. I have been doing this for ten years. It made such a difference for me, and it's affordable so people can try it without the huge cost commitment.
Coconut oil is comedogenic!! It also doesn’t absorb well (quickly) and is completely pointless (along with most other forms of moisturizing) if exfoliation has not taken place first!!
It's unfortunate but my skin reacts really badly to coconut oil. Especially on my neck. Big angry hard red bumps. I have to read ingredients really carefully for everything.
Hey everyone, I’ve been dealing with keratosis pilaris for what feels like forever definitely more than 10 years now. It’s mostly on my arms and thighs, and honestly, it’s made me feel so insecure, especially in the summer or when wearing anything sleeveless or short. I’ve tried so many things exfoliating, moisturizing, actives like lactic acid, glycolic acid, but nothing has made a significant difference. I don’t know if I’m missing something or just need to be more consistent, but it’s really disheartening when you try and try and still feel stuck. If you’ve struggled with KP and actually found something that worked for you (even a little), I’d genuinely love to hear about it. Whether it’s a product, routine, or even lifestyle changes please share. Also, is there anything that made it worse for you that I should maybe avoid?
Do you live in an area with hard water? As this can exacerbate KP and other topical issues. Consider a chelating soap like hello Klean or a water filter or both, in addition to physical exfoliation daily and follow with a thick body lotion like soap and glory (even better if you can find the scent with actives in it).
Don’t know how old you but cell turnover decreases with age, so you have to stay consistent to see the best results
Please see a derm, I was prescribed 2 different creams and now just use tret as it helped a ton and keeps it clear too, frequently change your loofah, razor etc.
Have you tried urea cream?
Try amlactin 15% lotion, smells horrible but effective! Can use it daily.
Amlactin has helped with mine so much!
Yep. Every time I get out of the shower, it goes on the backs of my arms. Consistency is key! And don’t stop using it once it clears up.
Can you let me know which brand of Amlactin ?
This worked on my daughters thighs and upper arms in 3 wks!
Which brand of amalactin ?
Salicylic acid lotion after you shave. Exfoliate before shaving I use a net and an glycolic acid bar soap. Never use the same razor twice a cheap new razor is better than a used expensive one. Try to leave it as long as you can between shaves and shave in every direction but against the growth. My kp used to be really bad to the point that one of my legs was all hyperpigmented for a while and this helped so much. People say not to over exfoliate but I probably do so I use the salicylic acid lotion everytime I shower whether I shave or not.
I have KP on my thigh, and I used to scrub a lot over that area a few years ago to make it go away. But it didn't. So eventually, I got okay with it. And now I just cleanse that area, like I do with any other parts.
But I was wondering, are there any actual products that would make it go away, or at least less visible? I saw an Aveeno product for KP, does that work?
I used first aid beauty KP bump eraser exfoliant on my thighs for a few months every couple of days and it helped a lot
After the KP visibly reduced, did you still keep using the product?
Every now and then but I find that using a clean washcloth and regular body soap helps keep the KP away also - like a gentle physical exfoliator.
The best products I’ve used are:
Amlactin First aid beauty kp sctub First aid beauty kp lotion Naturism retinol body lotion
More extreme: Lazer hair removal Chemical peels Tretinoin
As others have said the first aid Beauty KP physical exfoliate and the lotion they have. Natrium BHA body wash Topicals slather body serum Smooth as a baby now
Any lotion made with lactic acid is what you are looking for. Price point or brand is more of a personal preference.
Thank you! From the seeing all those reels of The ordinary glycolic acid solution, I used to think that's what is used for kp
Urea 40% cream plus lots and lots of moisturizer will make it go away
Best treatments for keratosis pilaris
Key Considerations for Treating Keratosis Pilaris (KP)
Moisturization: Regularly applying a good moisturizer can help soften the rough patches. Look for creams that contain urea, lactic acid, or glycerin.
Exfoliation: Gentle exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells. Consider using products with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) like salicylic acid.
Topical Retinoids: Prescription retinoids (like tretinoin) can promote cell turnover and prevent hair follicles from becoming clogged. These may take time to show results.
Chemical Peels: Professional chemical peels can help improve the texture of the skin by removing the top layer of dead skin cells.
Laser Treatments: For more severe cases, laser therapy can reduce redness and improve skin texture. Consult a dermatologist for options.
Consistency is Key: Treatments may take several weeks to show improvement, so consistency in your skincare routine is essential.
Recommendation: Start with a combination of a gentle exfoliating body wash and a rich moisturizer containing urea or lactic acid. If you don’t see improvement after a few weeks, consider consulting a dermatologist for prescription options or professional treatments.
