Best Water Filters for Fridge

TL;DR

  • Choose filters specific to your fridge model.
  • Genuine manufacturer filters often perform better than generic ones.
  • Consider additional filtration systems like reverse osmosis for improved water quality.

Fridge Model Compatibility

The first step in selecting the best water filter for your fridge is ensuring compatibility with your specific refrigerator model. Many users emphasize that fridge water filters are specific to the model, so identifying your fridge's model number is crucial [1:1]. This ensures you get a filter that fits properly and functions as intended.

Genuine vs. Generic Filters

There is a consensus that genuine manufacturer filters generally offer better performance compared to cheaper, generic alternatives. For example, users have reported satisfaction with Samsung's genuine filters over off-brand options [2:1]. While generic filters can be more affordable, they may not fit as well or last as long as the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) filters [2:2].

Activated Carbon Filtration

Most fridge water filters use activated carbon, similar to Brita-type filters, to remove taste and odor-related contaminants from water [2:3]. Activated carbon is effective at improving water taste by removing chlorine and other impurities. However, its effectiveness depends on the specific contaminants present in your tap water.

Additional Filtration Options

For those dealing with particularly poor water quality, such as well water, a fridge filter alone may not suffice. Users suggest installing inline filters before the water enters the fridge or opting for a reverse osmosis system for comprehensive purification [4:1][4:7]. These systems can provide high-quality drinking water and improve the overall performance of your fridge's water dispenser.

Reverse Osmosis Systems

Investing in a reverse osmosis (RO) system is recommended for those seeking the highest level of water purity. RO systems effectively remove total dissolved solids (TDS), resulting in water that is free from most impurities [2:8]. Although these systems can be more expensive, they offer significant improvements in water quality and are worth considering if your budget allows.

Fridge water filters are specific to the model of fridge so a good place to start would be to find the model number of the fridge and see if there are any other options

Fridge water filters that don't taste like tap water

Posted by NotTobyFromHR · in r/homeowners · 6 years ago

After doing some light reading, I learned that the cheap water filters are generally not as good as the "genuine" ones.

Are there any suggestions for filters which do a decent job of making tap water taste not like bottled water.

I'm not going to be buying bottles of water or a stand alone dispenser. I want to use the fridge built in water function.

I've been pleased with the home depot brand fridge filters. I have a Samsung fridge and the price is about $45 for two filters. Each filter generally lasts about six months.

Fridge filters are activated carbon, which is the same as Brita type filters.

Activated carbon removes a number of taste and odor related contaminants. It may or may not 'make your water taste like bottled water' it depends on what's in your tap water to begin with.

R/O is specialized filtration for removing TDS. Reducing TDS to 0 removes all taste. Some people do not like R/O water. Manufacturers using R/O to create bottled water add minerals back into the water afterwords to create a minimal controlled level of taste. People using R/O can get drops for similar effect.

Usually the manufacturers brand contains the most carbon.

My fridge does not have a built in filter, no water dispenser, ice only. I plumbing my kitchen sink and fridge to be fed through a standard cartridge housing and use a carbon cartridge in that. Standard size cartridges have far more capacity than any of the fridge ones and cost about $8. You can get a 'filter' to bypass a refrigerator filter and do the same thing, but it requires plumbing.

Second this. I've got one of those Brita refillable tank-type dispensers in our fridge, and we've had it for over 18 years.

Your local hardware store should have some systems available. You can either opt to install yourself or have a plumber come do it.

I live in Las Vegas, where e have some of the hardest water in the nation. A local water purification company installed a whole home water softening system, as well as a tap on my kitchen sink, that uses a reverse osmosis filter. The filters are changed yearly by the company. The soft water lines are also hooked up to my refrigerator. My ice is super clear and water is super fresh. It was pretty steep, at a price of $4500. But knowing my water is clean, pipes no longer will have crud flowing through them, ice is clear, and water is tasty, I think the price is worth it. I’ve done at home water testing kits before and after, and it definitely has worked.

Fridge filters are kind of expensive and don't last super long.

It might be worth putting in a filter on the line before it gets to the fridge. What we did was put a filter on the cold-water line under the sink and take the fridge water off of that so both the sink and the fridge have filtered water.

Depends on what is causing the bad taste, and how fine the filter is (ie how small the particles that it filters out are).

You can install a whole house filter for not a ton of money, all things considered, at least if you have ready access to some plumbing. Ours was like, $40 plus some plumbing fittings. Many of them take universal filters, so you can experiment with different filter pore sizes and see if it helps your water issue. It's cheaper than buying a refrigerator and finding out the filter doesn't help, plus it filters all of the water for your entire house.

FWIW our water tastes very irony and a bit sulfury naturally. If we keep our water softener in service and replace our 10 micron filter regularly, and chlorine shock the well occasionally, the water tastes pretty good. There's still a bit of an iron taste, but it's hardly noticeable.

Have you considered installing a point of use reverse osmosis system in the kitchen? Fairly inexpensive and you can use it solely for drinking water instead of paying to have the water treated at point of entry

That way you’ll have the same water as now for showering and what not but have a source of pure drinking water

That's above a fridge filter's pay grade. You wanna look into RO or whole-house filtering at the water softener.

We shopped fridges a couple years ago. I don't recall any that we looked at as having an air filter. Never heard of such a thing.

The water filters are bad enough. Seems like they are there primarily as an extra profit center since they put chips in them so you have to buy their models at $50 insead of generic finders at $15. I hope they don't start doing the same thing with air filters as well.

What would make you think they all should have air filters? They are actually pretty useless, just a marketing gimmick to make the fridge cost more and get you to buy filters on top of it. On a side note take Samsung out of your search for a fridge, it's one of the worst appliances you can buy.

Air filters in refrigerators are useless. The filters are all physically small and have very little airflow through them. A great selling point, but what exactly are you trying to accomplish? The fridge itself has a basic filtration system, in that it removes moisture from the air. Smells and mold leave the air with that moisture, and you're good to go.

Which Refrigerator Water Filter should I buy: the expensive default one or affordable after market product?

Hi. I have a LG refrigerator, model LFXC22526S, which was bought new less than one year ago. The Matching Replacement Water Filter Model is LT1000PC. This default Refrigerator Water Filter product is $50 each in Home Depot or Lowe's. I saw another product on Amazon, Refrigerator Water Filter Replacement of FilterLogic, $25 for a Pack of 3. Can I just buy the less expensive one from Amazon? Is there any bad effect if I use this kind of after market water filter for this refrigerator? Thank you.

Here’s my personal experience with fridge filters.

2 different fridges. One kenmore, one Samsung, both of which had expensive brand name filters and the three pack you speak of for options to buy. Went both routes. And the three pack is garbage. Water starts to taste horrible well before the 6 month filter life. In both the kenmore and the Samsung. Samsung is almost immediate on how bad the water tasted. The expensive brand name filter works well past 6 month reset on fridge. And tastes great the whole time. Don’t waste money on the 3 pack.

HI all - my husband and I visit my mom a few times a year for longish stretches of time, She is a long time St. Augustine resident.

I've read the posts about St Augustine - and Florida in general's - water.

I know a lot of people say it smells like rotten eggs/sulfur, but my mom has a different issue. (well maybe the sink water has that issue, my husband says it smells and tastes bad.) Her refrigerator water (the kind that is built in to the fridge where you put your cup against a lever and water or ice comes out) doesn't taste or smell like sulfur. It doesnt smell at all, actually.

It just tastes like bleach and oddly when I drink it I just get thirstier and thirstier. My husband says the same about the bleach taste and getting thirstier.

So we've been getting bottled water and creating a lot of plastic waste, which I don't want to do especially since we stay for a long time.

For the water from the fridge system - she uses a filter called samsung water filter ice & water refrigerator filter. HAF-CIN-2P/EXP model code. Not trying to rag on any brand but that's what she uses and to us it's a bleachy taste. I heard your water is extra chlorinated and I wonder if that's it. And wonder why it would make us even more thirsty.

I'm open to hear any filter your recommend, either for the sink and/or for the fridge.

Hope I'm not offending anyone - I'm trying to not keep creating plastic pollution in your lovely town.

Thank you for any suggestions. I definitely won't think you're a shill and really appreciate any exact brand /model recommendations to try next time we come.

I use ZeroWater. I don't have any issues with it. You can even return the filters for recycling if you're concerned with waste.

Have you noticed a drop in filter quality? I bought 4 from target and they aren't working at all (same tds as tap) and my mom sent me 2 from Amazon that are reading .008. wtf happened to zero water?

Everydrop by whirlpool. They're the best and the most expensive but you get what you pay for. I've tried the cheapies off Amazon and they're not worth it at all!

we put a filter for chlorine at the point the water comes in the house and change it every three months. it works really well, and didn't impact water pressure in a noticeable way.

The rotten egg/sulfur water is only for somebody who’s house uses a well instead of a municipal source. There is a water treatment place on us 1 north where you can fill a gallon up for like .25 it’s that good good

I live downtown in an apartment complex that definitely does not have a well and my water smells sulphuric. My work is the same. 🤷🏼‍♀️

You ain’t tasted sulfur until you been out to one of the trailers off of Woodlawn or Venetian blvd and tasted well water, you’d be on your knees in tears projectile vomiting and begging for some of the water from your apartment’s tap

You're supposed to drain it? I've been doing it wrong this whole time? I just pulled the filter out and smacked another one in it's place... Maybe that's why my shits clogged now?

Gotta read the instructions on the package. Mine says something like “flush 4-6 gallons through before use.”

Idk why your shit would be clogged though. Could be related, but you should look that shit up.

YouTube is the best tool in the “shed”. Watch a couple videos and see if you can handle the job. If not, time to google for a service call.

I felt like the fork needed extra support. Even if that support was less structural and more moral.

Your fridge is in there fairly tightly and likely needs the coils cleaned, a full defrost and make sure the defrost drain hole isn't blocked. If, after doing those things, it doesn't work, it could be the thermostat, evap fan, damper control

yes if the freezer gets wet,eg due to the door being left open, then the conduit for freezing cold air to fridge can get blocked with ice , and then it won't work right.

defrost the freezer.. throw hot water in and get the ice in these spots melted...

Yeah, my current fridge is a lot more sensitive to this, even the tiniest corner of a bread bag on top can break the seal and freeze up that little conduit between the freezer and fridge

Search the model number. Also need more information about type: top/bottom mount freezer, single or french door etc.

Look on Youtube. Defrost is a must. Run the diagnostics (youtube).

Parts are available through Whirlpool or 3rd party sites, generally easy to replace (fans, control panel etc) and should have instructions. Check youtube too.

If you still have the issue after defrosting it, I always did, it may be your evaporator fan or defrost thermostat. I did apartment maintenance for many years and really no time to unplug and wait to defrost. I always carefully used a hair dryer and the majority of the time it was a bad fan. Plenty of YouTube videos on it.

best water filters for fridge

Key Considerations for Choosing the Best Water Filters for Your Fridge:

  1. Compatibility: Ensure the filter is compatible with your refrigerator model. Check the manufacturer’s specifications or user manual for the correct filter type.

  2. Filtration Standards: Look for filters that meet NSF/ANSI standards for contaminant reduction. Common standards include:

    • NSF 42: Reduces chlorine taste and odor.
    • NSF 53: Reduces specific contaminants like lead, mercury, and cysts.
    • NSF 401: Reduces emerging contaminants like pharmaceuticals and pesticides.
  3. Filter Lifespan: Consider how long the filter lasts before needing replacement. Most filters last between 6 months to 1 year, depending on usage and water quality.

  4. Cost: Compare the price of filters, including the cost of replacement cartridges. Some brands may offer better value over time.

  5. Ease of Installation: Look for filters that are easy to install and replace without requiring special tools.

Recommendations:

  • EveryDrop by Whirlpool: This filter is highly rated for its ability to reduce a wide range of contaminants and is compatible with many refrigerator brands. It meets NSF standards 42, 53, and 401.

  • Frigidaire ULTRAWF: Known for its excellent filtration capabilities, this filter is easy to install and is compatible with various Frigidaire models. It also meets NSF standards for contaminant reduction.

  • Samsung DA29-00020B: This filter is effective at reducing chlorine taste and odor, as well as other contaminants. It's designed for Samsung refrigerators and is easy to replace.

Takeaway: Always check compatibility with your fridge model and prioritize filters that meet NSF standards for effective contaminant reduction. Regularly replacing your water filter will ensure you maintain clean and safe drinking water.
