What Redditors are Saying

Best Waterproof Phone Cases

TL;DR

  • Lifeproof and Ghostek are popular choices for rugged waterproof cases.
  • Consider Sea to Summit dry bags or Stash7 Waterpocket for flexible waterproof options.

Lifeproof Cases

Lifeproof cases are frequently recommended for their comprehensive protection against water, dust, drops, and snow. Users have praised them for keeping phones safe over long periods, despite the relatively high cost [2:1][5:4]. However, some users noted issues with durability, particularly concerning the camera area and charging port [3:3].

Ghostek Cases

Ghostek cases are another option mentioned by users who need durable waterproof protection. They are available on Amazon and have been used successfully by some individuals in demanding environments [3:3][5:5]. While not universally preferred, they offer a more affordable alternative to Lifeproof.

Flexible Dry Bags

For those looking for less bulky solutions, Sea to Summit offers phone-sized dry bags that are soft and flexible, making them easier to store in compact spaces like a PFD pocket [3:1]. The Stash7 Waterpocket is another option that provides floatation and screen usability while maintaining waterproof integrity [4:1].

Pelican Cases

Pelican cases are highly regarded for their durability and reliability, often used by professionals in rugged conditions. They are praised for their ability to withstand harsh environments, although overheating can be an issue on hot days [3:5][4:3].

Additional Considerations

Many modern smartphones come with IP68 ratings, which provide substantial water resistance. For fieldwork or outdoor activities, focusing on impact resistance might be more critical [5:2]. Some users suggest using simple cases combined with Apple Care for peace of mind [5:8]. Additionally, considering cases that float can prevent loss in water environments [4:7].

What cases do you guys use on your phones? Do you use your phone while you’re on the water? How do you store or mount your phone?

I throw my phone in the center waterproof console. But I’m getting a new phone and I want to know what cases in general you like. I have always used an otter box but I’m not sure if there are better options or not. Maybe I want to mount my phone on a stand, how do you like that? Or I just keep it in the console. Are there any new water proof or life proof cases out there you guys like that don’t have terrible sound issues like in the past?

Your new phone will be waterproof/resistant. I just use the robohawk tether to go around my phone and case and leashed to my PFD. If your phone and you do go for a bath, it will tell you moisture detected in charging port so just air it out before charging.

Waterproof resistant won't save it from saltwater so you gotta be careful with saltwater

That is true I forget some of you people are not land locked on all sides.. :P

On a side thought are the ocean radios ? I see people have off shore on videos, are those things salt water proofed ?

I think this is the best set-up. I do the exact same thing. Robohawk tether attached to your PFD. I also enjoy having my phone in a pocket when fishing. Those work emails can wait!

I assume you use the Robohawk Talon? Does it feel like a snug fit? What kind of phone do you use it on?

ichabod13 · 4 months ago

I have the Talon ya, I originally used the Stinger but with my newer phone and case it is a pain so the Talon works better. Holds the phone very snug and I have a larger screen with the S24 FE. The Talon silicone before stretching is like 4.5in by 2.5in so it will stretch and hold every phone on the market easily. I just slip it off when done and taking off PFD and leave it attached for next time.

I use this attached to my PFD. Wraps around the corners easily. Prevents my phone from going lower than my seat.

My phone goes in the hatch. In a waterproof bag. Keeping your phone out all the time is a liability. And if you don't have the time to get your phone out, you don't have the time to use it

I usually put all my pocket stuff into a waterproof stowaway container and then tether it somewhere near me. Keys, wallet, phone, lighter, weed, etc. If I go for a spill, all the stuff I need is in one easier to gather spot and I'm not worried about my phone getting wet. It also helps me to ignore the phone and enjoy nature, but be available if I land a monster

Any suggestions for water proof/water resistant phone cases?

Posted by citycyclist247 · in r/doordash_drivers · 4 years ago

I’ve had an Otterbox case for a while but I’m looking to get a new one. Water resistance would be clutch because when it rains I currently put the phone in a ziploc bag 😄 it works though.

I have ONLY used Lifeproof cases on ALL of my phones. They are waterproof, drop proof, dust proof, and snow proof. I have never had a cracked screen or anything bad happen to my phone. They cost at least $80 minimum, but it’s the best purchase you can make. I tend to keep my phones for at least 5 years.

This is what I came here to say. My iPad has shoveled snow off a car, survives in the shower (just don’t drop it on your foot! xD), and could probably get chucked across the room and live to tell the tale thanks to LifeProof.

Waterproof phone case

Posted by Financiallyunstable_ · in r/whitewater · 6 months ago

I’m looking for some help finding a good waterproof phone case for boating. Im a raft guide and a kayak instructor so having my phone on me is a must when working. I have an iPhone 16 pro max and I’m looking for a sleek/slim waterproof case I can keep in my clamshell pocket of my pfd. I know my phone is rated for a max depth of 6 meters for 30 minutes max but, I’m often in the water way longer than that. The reason for having my phone on me is for immediate feedback for clients who I am instructing or for emergency purposes. Admins delete if this post is not allowed. Any suggestions would be nice thanks!

Most phones are ip68 or better which is usually plenty for a shallow river. I use a basic waterproof bag style phone holder with a lanyard and float. You really need to prioritize it floating and staying with you. Water proof doesn't help if it's at the bottom of the river.

2 upvotes on reddit
50DuckSizedHorses · 6 months ago

Not Lifeproof. They break or have the camera part get scratched or have the charge port stop being waterproof, way too fast and often. Been using a Ghostek one from Amazon after trying a bunch. $30

I have a pocket on my pfd that I sprayed with waterproof spray. I keep my phone in there if I need to have it on me.
Try it with a book of matches first. If you get out of the water and you can light a match that was in your pocket, it should be good for your cell phone.

NOODL3 · 6 months ago

Most cheap waterproof phone cases have that big lump of shitty plastic across the top, which is what makes them annoying and hard to squeeze into a PFD. I can't stand those things and most of the time they're barely waterproof to begin with.

If you want something more flexible, Sea to Summit makes some great phone-sized dry bags that are entirely soft and flexible. They're definitely spendier but they're a lot more comfortable and easier to get into your clamshell. I use one of these for spare GoPro batteries and it works great.

Personally, I just keep a bag of waterproof charging port plugs in the truck and throw my phone straight in my PFD with no additional protection other than the normal case I have on it day to day. Even that plug is technically overkill with modern waterproofing, but it's nice to not have the "moisture detected in charging port" warning every time I get off the river. With these I've never had a single problem with my bare phone in my PFD for long days in and out of the water.

This is really helpful. Thanks. I wasn’t aware of charging port plugs until now!

Any recommendations for a waterproof phone case?

Posted by Various_Craft_7513 · in r/Sup · 4 months ago

I need to get a waterproof phone case for when I'm out on my paddleboard. I've seen several types that are basically a plastic bag that seals at the top, but can anyone recommend a particular one? I've heard the quality can vary.

I'd prefer one with a strap so that I can attach it to the board. Also, I'm not too bothered about actually being able to use the phone when it's in the case, just to have it there in case of emergency. Being able to take the odd picture or video would be nice, but it's not essential.

I've got a Pixel 6a, by the way. Thanks in advance, everyone!

I like the Stash7 Waterpocket, available via their website or Amazon. It'll take my ginormous iPhone 13 Pro Max without its regular case, but it provides enough protection while still floating despite that phone's weight. I can tap and control the screen through the big front window, while the camera works through a window on the back.

I like the Joto pouches. I have used them for many years

I recently added a Jovo float to my pouch, after losing my phone at the bottom of a lake (in a different pouch whose strap went over my head). My phone is heavy enough that this seemed the best solution for that. Floating pouches exist but they are bulkier and don't float as much weight. If you just plan to use the neck leash to attach the pouch to your board you don't need the float, but if you will detach it for pictures for example... I would add floatation.

Need a rugged, waterproof case for iPhone 14 Pro

Posted by firedansk · in r/iphone · 3 years ago

I’m a field biologist and need a case that can withstand being dropped on rocks and in water as well as regular exposure to dust.

I’ve been using a Lifeproof Fre on my old iPhone 7 Plus and I’ve had to replace the case every year or two due to wear and tear. I’m finally upgrading to the 14 Pro and would appreciate recommendations for a case that can handle heavy fieldwork.

Which case do you use to protect your phone from the outdoors? I’d like to keep the weight and bulk as minimal as possible.

How much depth are you expecting?

The iPhone 14 models have an IP68 dust and water resistance rating, which corresponds to 30 minutes under 6 meters of water. That's the same rating as the LifeProof Fre you had on your iPhone 7.

Maybe you can just focus on impact resistance.

Totally understand. I'd just stick a simple case and screen protector on it to keep scratches/dents away and get apple care personally. Then you have the peace of mind knowing no matter what happens you can take it in and get it fixed cheap, and don't have to lug around a phone with a massive case.

Sure, no problem. I’ve used LifeProof for many iPhones . I’ve used the Ghosttek as well a few times. I’m not happy with the iPhone 13 Pro Max model case. Previous ones were all fine. If money isn’t an option I’d use the LifeProof. The only issue I ever had was on the LifeProof on a iPhone 6. My daughter cannon balled into a pool, hit the bottom and the seam split allowing water seepage.

Highly durable phone case?

Posted by --Addison-- · in r/BuyItForLife · 2 years ago

I know it's not quite a buy it for life product, but I'm trying to get as close as possible.

I've broken 2 phones beyond use or repair this year due to dropping them. I've also had one die due to water damage in the past. I am having a hard time figuring out which cases are actually going to protect the phone vs just looking tough. I'm happy to have a bulky case and spend a fair bit, I don't need wireless charging, my main goal is to protect it from drops at all costs. Is a front + back case going to be better than a separate screen protector and case?

I have just gotten a Galaxy 53A, the case people most recommend is Spiggen Tough Amour (https://www.spigen.com/collections/galaxy-a-series/products/galaxy-a53-5g-case-tough-armor?variant=40391734493231) But this isn't a front + back combo, nor is it waterproof.

Here are some Front + Back, waterproof Combos I found:

How can I tell which ones are verifiably going to do a good job of protecting my phone from me and which just are only made to look strong?

Honestly , Ottorbox Defender is all you need. I've been buying these cases for about as long as smart phones have existed.

I'm in the trades so our phones get put through hell. Dropped off ladders, dropped onto concrete , in our tool belts with all sorts of metal and bits, dust, grime, you name it. The only time I have ever broken a phone in the past 10 years was when it was out of the case.

We don't want "All you need" we want a phone case that can protect a phone from an absurd amount of abuse.

I mean, we want a phone case that can survive being munched on by an alligator. We want a phone case that has a ballistic rating of level 4. We want a complete water, air, oil, whatever tight seal.

We want a case that can hold up to existential horrors and can have a staring match with the abyss.

We want future civilizations to find this phone we had a millenia ago, simply because the case didn't quit.

OTTERBOX WONT GIVE US THAT YOU GOOBER.

I am 100% happy with my Spigen Tough Armor. I have used these cases through a couple of phone generations. My phone is waterproof (survived an accidental swim) Even carrying my phone in my pocket, the glass has survived just fine. I am active and not easy on my phone...but I have never broken the glass

Who makes the best overall drop proof protective, dust proof and waterproof cases?

Posted by DumLitDev · in r/iphone · 2 years ago

Upgrading on Friday to the 15 PM. I’m looking for the absolute best case on the market. Looking for high quality, I usually have just bought 3rd party in the past but now I want the absolute case money can buy. I appreciate any replies, thanks!

I was going to try that instead of the otterbox defender xt but in all the pictures it still shows a door over the action button.

Yes, I got mine the other day, and was a little disappointed about the flap over the action button. They have also replaced every case under warranty for me for the past three phones probably seven years. even if the rubber starts peeling or something, mundane like that. I’m sure they will update the case to use the button over the next couple months.

There are several good brands. My personal favorite is Otterbox. Their “Commuter” model has served me well (iPhone 8 dropped multiple times, sometimes on concrete, still looks practically new). Their “Defender” model is tougher still.

waterproof phones, phone cases, or disposable phones for sitting in the tub with?

Posted by PaulbunyanIND · in r/hottub · 2 years ago

In 2016 or so I paid 30 bucks for a crappy smart phone, but I'm hoping to find a waterproof or resistant phone. I lost my last spare phone to dropping it in the tub. Anyone have a phone they take in the tub with them?

My husband and I have iPhones that are water resistant, so we just use them. My Kindle is also water resistant, so I’ll often read while I’m using our hot tub.

I dropped a phone I thought was water resistant... here I am. I'm glad it's worked for you though!

I have an 11 Pro Max and my husband has a 13 Pro Max and ours constantly get wet and we haven’t had an issue. We both wear our Apple Watches in without issue too. I know some of the older models weren’t rated for full immersion but our current ones are, that’s why we don’t worry about it.

I have numerous underwater videos from iPhones that suffered little from it.

I just have a 60 inch tv by mine and watch my favorite shows while I soak. I do have a lifeproof case on my phone and have never had a problem with it and water but I don’t use it much while soaking

newer phones have some water proofness to them. i have dropped my Iphone 12 into the tub multiple times, get it out fast, i take the case off, dry it, blow out the charger port, this has happened multiple times over the last 2 years with same phone, so much i don't even worry about it any longer, i set phone on edge, if it falls in it falls in.

Keep in mind phones lose their water proofing if the screen has ever been off the phone for repair or battery replacement. Newer iPhones have glass backs and if they’re cracked that can also let water in.

I use my iPhone in the hot tub often and haven’t had any issues but I also haven’t dropped it in and I dry my hands off before using it.

We like to keep the soaks as a phone-free zone, it’s a nice chance to “unplug” for a bit…

Yes, if my wife would get in with me I'd be more inclined for that. And tech has ruined my old brain to the point where I'll be listening to some excellent album I like, however suddenly get struck with the desire to change the damn song to whatever is in my head?

Best waterproof phone cases

Key Considerations for Waterproof Phone Cases:

  1. Water Resistance Rating: Look for cases with an IP68 rating, which means they can withstand submersion in water beyond 1 meter for extended periods. This is ideal for swimming or water sports.

  2. Durability: Ensure the case is made from high-quality materials that can withstand drops and impacts, especially if you’re prone to accidents.

  3. Compatibility: Make sure the case is specifically designed for your phone model to ensure a perfect fit and access to all buttons, ports, and features.

  4. Ease of Use: Consider how easy it is to install and remove the case, as well as how it affects the usability of your phone (e.g., touchscreen sensitivity).

  5. Additional Features: Some cases offer extra features like built-in screen protectors, lanyards, or even floating capabilities, which can be beneficial for water activities.

Recommendations:

  • OtterBox Defender Series: Known for its rugged protection, this case offers excellent water resistance and drop protection. It's bulkier but very durable.

  • Lifeproof FRE Series: This case is slim and lightweight while providing waterproof protection and drop resistance. It also includes a built-in screen protector.

  • Catalyst Waterproof Case: Offers a sleek design with high waterproof ratings and is known for its durability and stylish look. It's great for outdoor activities.

  • Spigen Tough Armor: While not fully waterproof, it offers good water resistance and excellent drop protection, making it a versatile option for everyday use.

Choose a case based on your specific needs, whether it's for everyday use, outdoor adventures, or extreme conditions.
