Best Way to Build a Base in Subnautica

Building an effective base in Subnautica requires careful consideration of location, design, and functionality. Here are some key insights from experienced players:

Base Location

Choosing the right location for your base is crucial. Many players recommend building near multiple biomes to ensure easy access to diverse resources. Popular locations include the South-western grassy plateaus, which offer safety, proximity to valuable zones, and early-game solar power [4:1]. The Jellyshroom caves provide access to magnetite and lithium, while the Cove Tree in the Lost River is favored for its scenic environment and resource-rich surroundings [5:3][4:3].

Base Design and Layout

Functionality should be prioritized when designing your base. A common approach is to create distinct rooms or wings for specific purposes, such as storage, crafting, and power generation [1:1]. Some players prefer compact designs, utilizing moonpools and corridors for storage and essential equipment [2:3]. Building vertically can also maximize space without sprawling layouts [2:9].

Power Sources

Selecting the appropriate power source based on your base's location is important. Thermal vents are ideal for bases situated near volcanic activity, such as those in the Lost River or near the Aurora [4:5][5:4]. Solar panels are suitable for shallower areas with abundant sunlight [5:2].

Exploration and Safety

For players who are hesitant to explore deeper areas due to fear of aggressive creatures, establishing a base in intimidating regions like the Lost River can provide a safe haven [2:2]. Utilizing creative mode can help familiarize yourself with different biomes and base-building mechanics without worrying about survival elements [2:1].

Multiple Bases Strategy

Many players find it beneficial to build multiple bases throughout the game. Starting with a base near the escape pod for early-game convenience, and then expanding to deeper areas as you progress, ensures that you have strategic outposts for resource collection and exploration [5:1].

By considering these factors, you can build a base that not only meets your practical needs but also enhances your overall gameplay experience in Subnautica.

Hi, I have Built a big spacious Base on trasy plateau area but I'm not satisfied. How are you planning all the stuff to be in reasonable place? I have made too sophisticated and too expanded base which is more an underwater labirynth than a good accomodation. Also: which place do you prefer to build a Base?

[deleted] · 2 years ago

Ok, so I have made a double flat big storage room with two moon pools on the left for prawn and seamoth. On the back-double multi purpose room, on the right-addittional big storage groom with another multipurpose room for atomic reactor and scanner room.

First flat of main body is for storage and crafting. Second flat of main body is for plants. Further on flats is double alien container.

Double multipurpose room- upper deck is resting station conjoined with observatory. Lower deck is for collectibles and data.

Right wing is reactor, scanner and some space for lockers.

Drawbacks: not many glass because Construction is heavy.

Trying to make a cool base design is all well and good, but my favorite bases have always been those where I prioritized functionality. I set up distinct rooms/wings in my base. I usually have the following:

  1. Storage room: Multipurpose rooms can be great for this, but you can also do a storage corridor by placing a bunch of x corridors in a row. This makes a hallway with recessed "cubbies" that you can stick wall lockers into.
  2. Crafting/command room: obviously needs to be near storage. Should contain all the fabrication stuff, as well as radios, chargers, etc
  3. Power generation: if using bioreactors or nuclear reactors, you'll need dedicated space for these. Bio reactors can be fed with plant matter, but I like to use the 2 level multipurpose room with alien containment for occulus breeding.
  4. Kitchen: water filter machines, grow beds, alien containment for Reginald breeding. Make this a 2 level multipurpose room with the alien containment downstairs and everything else upstairs. Use the wall mounted plant pots for marble melons (easier to stab with a knife) and floor beds for everything else
  5. Moon pools: you're probably going to want to have these near storage as well for easy unloading of materials, but that's your call. I like to have 2 moon pools, one near the ocean floor and the other directly above that with some space in between. The top one is for the seamoth, bottom for prawn
  6. Exterior growbeds: I like to stick these on top of the seamoth moon pool
  7. Scanner room: probably best placed near command, but it really doesn't matter. You won't spend a ton of time in there anyway.
  8. Decoration: bedrooms, science labs, recrooms, observatories, etc are really nice to have in a base for flavor. But do yourself a favor and add these last. These non-functional parts of your base should be an entirely separate area. It's fine if they are not super quick to get to since you likely won't spend a lot of time there. Get the functional part up and running and organized first!

Note: utilize multi-leveled design to your advantage, but don't go crazy! There's nothing more irritating that trying to activate a ladder at your feet that has a ladder above it as well. Stick to just 2 levels, or offset your ladders so that they aren't on top of each other

My system is very similar, except I have storage and fabricator in the same room, with battery and power cell chargers next to fabricator. This room is usually next to the entrance, since it gets used the most.

I just build straight up 3-4 floors full of storage cabinets.

I have no preference for location tho, I just built all over the place and placed beacons accordingly.

Help with Base

Sooo... I need some help 😅 This is my second time playing Subnautica. The first time, I didn’t even make it to the >!Lost River!< — but this time, I actually got there!

Thing is... I’m extremely scared of literally anything even remotely creepy in this game 😬 So now I’m procrastinating instead of exploring further. My procrastination plan? Building a better base 😂 But I kinda suck at it. Right now, I just have a tiny base in the Safe Shallows made of a few corridors, a Scanner Room, a round room with some storages... and a floating moonpool — it’s super cramped and honestly kinda ugly. (Image attached)

Any tips or suggestions for building a good-looking and efficient base in a nice biome? Please help 😭🙏

You should build a base in the lost river. That way, you have a safe place nearby to help you feel safer about exploring. Plus, it has great spots for thermal plants.

If I build a base there, won't the big ghost worm try to eat me and destroy the base? :0 If he doesn't attack, I think it's a great place indeed. Ty!

Lichen_King · 2 months ago

There are several, but they don't wander far from where you see them. The smaller aggressive creatures are more widespread, but they only attack you or your vehicle. If it's up in a moonpool it will be fine, and your cyclops is safe from them as well. Just have to make your way past the big ghost leviathans.

3 upvotes on reddit
shinobigarth · 2 months ago

You could make the moonpool your whole main base if you wanted and just put all your lockers, fabricator and stuff on the walls in it. The only thing you can’t put in there and would need a large room for is a Bio or Nuclear Reactor if you were using that for power, or an Alien Containment if you wanted an aquarium for feeshies. If you’re using solar or thermal power you can just put everything in the moonpool if you wanted. You could also have a few corridors on the moonpool walls to give yourself additional room for storage or whatever else.

Ok_Opinion_5131 · OP · 2 months ago

I didn't even know you could put connected corridors in the moonpool 😅 ty!

You can put just about anything on the walls of it that you can put in a normal room. I’ve never tried putting the water filter machine but I’m pretty sure that can too.

Ok so start by building out foundation maybe 6 to 8 to make a big enough space then go from there . Start with the X Compartment  and do 1 multipurpose room, 1 for the scanner and 1 for your moon pool

I HIGHLY recommend going into Creative and playing around with base construction in the different areas you want to build in. Not only does it help you get a visual of what you want without having to worry about oxygen or battery/material consumption, you can also get used to being in whatever biome you choose and find ways to navigate around all our aquatic "friends"

Base locations

I think this is the correct flair? This is like my 5th ever run on subnautica, coming back every year or so and completely forgetting how to play it. I always try to build bases in new places so the game doesn't get boring (it rarely does anyways). Shame on me for using a map but I have a horrible memory. had these 3 spots in mind for a base. 1st is east of floating islands. I think it's quite a good location but the bonesharks are a nuisanceeeeee. 2th is a spot in the mushroom forest bordering with a few biomes on the north of the map (next to wreck 12). It's cool but a bit boring I guess? The third one is the cliff side of the blood kelp zone. Any tips or recommendations? Thank you, have a wonderful day! :3

I’ve built at spot 2! Near the blood Kelp and those two mountains near the floating islands is a good outpost imo, but I struggled with materials a small bit. My main base was elsewhere. The locals are nice, you’re not far from the shallows, not far from the deep end.

It’s a good spot for later game play with quick access to relevant areas. >!The cyclops has a path into the LR!< near that area, but I’ve never personally >!driven my cyclops into the lost river through that tunnel thanks to the Friend outside it!<

I used to build in the safe shallows for base 1, but I've shifted to the entrance to the jellyshroom caves recently. Close to the beginning zone for resources, but you dont have to make an expedition for the jellyshroom resources.

Second base is usually at the lifepod in the bulb area. Thermal vent nearby for all your power needs,, and an entrance to the next tier down isnt that far away.

Mid/late game has to be the cove tree. It bridges the Lost River and deeper end game areas. It's a perfect depth to use the seamoth for one half and prawn suit for the other. It's scenic and surrounded by passive mobs. I almost exclusively build there when I have progressed far enough.

I prefer the very middle of the Lost River so you cover more of it with your scanner.

I built my Lost River base at the end of the Gargantuam Leviathan skeleton. The only downside is being neighbours with a juvenile ghost leviathan, but I killed it.

Additional: there are also thermal vents for power. I make insanely large bases in the cove tree and it always has enough power for everything

Same here.

It's safe, provides access to critical areas, has abundant resources, and is absolutely gorgeous. The tree cove really seems like it was designed specifically as a late-game sanctuary.

yeh i put my base on the island on the cliff above the tree area, because the tree area is just above the crush depth of the sea moth

I usually make a floating ring around the tree. It allows me to dock the seamoth in the moonpool in the ring, and my jump jet prawn upgrade lets me jump into the moonpool easily.

That spot is where I pretty much accidentally built my first base in my first playthrough before moving to a much worse location

Still cant really believe that I'd set up at one of the best starter base locations, by complete chance. I just wanted to build sort of near the lifepod

2 upvotes on reddit
fr4n88 · 1 year ago

I think that objectively the best place for building the main base is the South-western grassy plateaus.

Reasons:

- Can use light as energy source in early game.

- Relatively safe place, sand sharks and biters are a joke.

- Very close to kelp forest, Jellysroom cave, sparse reef, blood kelp trench and sea trader's path. All are zones with valuable resources and even a entrance to the lost river in the blood kelp trench.

- Not too far away from the center of the map, so nothing is too far away.

The only drawback is the pressence of the reefback leviathans which are too noisy, haha.

My first base was right next to gasopods at the very edge of Safe Shallows. I liked the spot a lot. Close to the center of the map, lots of sunlight, lots of resources, chill, and shallow enough to have solar panels above the surface.

My other base was by the Great Cove Tree at around 900m and it was priceless for the endgame.

I put mine in the red grassy area next to the Jellyshroom caves. It's a reasonable distance from the starter area, kelp forest, and blood kelp forest. The Jellyshroom caves are loaded with magnetite, too. And they're pretty :)

48 upvotes on reddit
tomekowal · 5 months ago

This is the answer. It is always best to build on the border of as many biomes as possible to have all kinds resources very close.

I usually swim around the safe shallows until I get to a place where all three: shallows, grassy plateau and kelp forest. Coincidentally, one of them is super close to jelly shroom caves, so it is close to four biomes.

There is a thermal vent off to the right of the aurora. It’s close to the escape pod at the beginning of the game. I built a grain silo type base right in the middle of the vent, and a moon pool off to the side. It’s probably like 200m away max from the escape pod. Great early base, and it’s near a lot of late game stuff if you know where the deep entrances are.

But also, multiple bases works. And the big submarine is excellent.

Underwater base mechanics

Posted by Ok_Math2247 · in r/playrust · 6 months ago
post image

How about a sustainable underwater base? Have you ever been in underwater labs? Those rooms with windows are so atmospheric. Imagine sitting in your base looking out at fish and darkness? Hearing deep screeching sound of your base. Alone in peace and mysterious silence.

You would use special oxygen tanks to supply oxygen in your base. You can also have unlimited oxygen with a tube going all the way up to the surface (but making you more discoverable). There would be a decompression room where the water is sucked out and you can enter the house.

If you open a door behind which is water or if you are getting raided and the wall breaks - the water will fill in the space breaking any electronics. You would probably use special doors for underwater.

Underwater base decay rate would be 3-5x of normal.

Subnautica is the only survival game that has ever gotten underwater base building right imo. I don’t know how they would do it in Rust but it would be fun. I wish we had more reasons to go into the ocean.

139 upvotes on reddit
Equivalent_Dig_5059 · 6 months ago

The next step of rust should be more creative ways to hide loot and maintain loot even after being raided

See if I get raided, but I have a secret stash or base somewhere that’s untouched, I’m likely to continue or at least try to

If FP gives us better ways to “maintain” loot, not “keep” loot. I think would be something that could prolong the life of a server.

Currently with ocean mechanics I say bring it on, I think ocean bases would be sick

50 upvotes on reddit
Predawnlemonade · 6 months ago

I think it would be interesting to have oxygen pumps or something that reveals the location of a base. I believe a perfectly hidden ocean base would be too strong.

Also I would be interested to see how raid supplies worked underwater, maybe you'd need to waterproof a satchel or maybe C4(protect the PCB and igniter?)

It would also be cool to see an expansion of the submarine, we could get like different raiding missiles out of it.

Edit: just had an alternate to the air pump, maybe just bubbles mostly inconspicuously rising from the base, but still noticeable?

Underwater free building would be really hard to implement in a way that doesn’t just result in a bunch of underwater bunkers 6 grids off the map.

What would be really cool IMO and a bit more realistic is some sort of prebaked geometry with buildable areas, basically how caves work.   Just instead of a big silo cave or whatever it’s some mega-underwater labs-style structure that has big halls and silos that the player can build in.

I thought about this as well, but what if they made it so that it had to have a grid number in order to be built in, meaning you can't go to A1, then up 3 grids (off map), and build. I do like the idea of buildable areas though.

I built my base at the border between the Grassy Plateau and Floating Islands, and right near the drop-down to the Blood Kelp Trench, which leads to the Lost River.

Grassy Plateau has many materials. Not only with Outcrops, but has titanium, fragments, entrance to the Jellyshrooms, and the legendary Sea Crown.

Dunes, while less resource-full, have wrecks with good fragments. And actually not as dangerous as some people say. Just stay close to the seabed.

The Blood Kelp is obvious. For the Lost River entrance. But I also use the Blood Oil as bioreactor fuel. That’s why I built my base there.

Or you could just go vanilla and make one at the Shallows

The “Habitat Builder” is one of the blueprints you start the game with. You make it in the fabricator. It’s one of the more complex recipes for early-game, though.

2 upvotes on reddit

You have to build the Habitat Builder tool. After that you use the tool to place base components with the resources in your inventory.

Simplest base to start I think is a foundation with a multipurpose room on top, plus hatch to get in and out.

Upgrading items is done by building the modification station in your habitat.

First time playing subnautica, I love it but…

I am an absolute noob when it comes to building bases. I’m not super far into the game but I can’t even make a cohesive square of tube right outside my life pod. Anyone got some builder tips? Anytime I look anything up online I get more spoilers.

Spend less time on building a base right now, and more time looking for wreckages and things to scan in the world.

There are many blueprints that will make building much, much easier, and they are only found by scanning parts or wreckages. If you need more storage space, just build a couple tubes in a line and fill them with storage and essentials, to act as a storage unit.

Better yet find the scanner room blue prints and scan for blueprints

Also hud chip comes in handy

Scanner room was the first blueprint I found, before any general rooms or compartments, so for the longest time my base was just the scanner room with a door. It was actually pretty nice!

You said "life pod". If that's what you meant, then you should know that you can't add or build onto the starter life pod. You need to find and scan other base parts (like the basic room or large room) and build a base from that.

And then with that.. yeah, base building can be a little rough. you need to make sure the part is rotated the right way (try turning thingd 90 degrees - like the monopool or scanner room). and then swim in and out and move camera so it moves closer and farther. sometimes the right place to drop it is father away then expected for it to attach since it has to add a little connector when you add into the larger base pieces.

There’s a base piece you can find and scan that makes building much better. Pretty rough to do much of anything when you just have the tubes

Keep it simple. Don’t overthink stuff. A simple base is a happy base.

How do I build a base? [no spoilers]

I made myself a habitat builder but there is no room blueprint or anything that I can place to start making the base. Any help?

  • with a hatch on the underside and some solar panels on top will last you for a bit. Build some wall lockers and a fabricator and a radio and whatever else on the walls. Follow thru the story normally following the locations you get from the radio and the PDAs and make sure you explore the surrounding areas thoroughly and Scan Everything and by the time you have a need for the bigger rooms you’ll have found the blueprints for them.

You don't need the big rooms to make a starter base, almost everything can be built in the corridors

The first base I ever built was a 4-way with a hatch. It's all I needed for a while.

You have to scan the structures first in order to be able to build them. Explore the map to find them, or just follow the storyline and it will eventually lead you to them.

Is there any specific spot where the room is supposed to spawn

The base rooms you can scan are always on the same predetermined spots on the map, but I really don't wanna spoil that for you - it's a cool discovery to make organically, and in the meantime you can use the tube structure that comes with the habitat builder, they basically work the same.

Best way to build a base in subnautica

Key Considerations for Building a Base in Subnautica:

  1. Location:

    • Shallow Depths: Start in shallower areas (like the Safe Shallows) to avoid pressure damage and to easily gather resources.
    • Proximity to Resources: Build near essential resources like Titanium, Quartz, and Copper. Consider locations near kelp forests or wrecks for easy access to materials.
  2. Base Design:

    • Modular Approach: Use a modular design with multipurpose rooms, corridors, and observatories to maximize space and functionality.
    • Vertical Expansion: Build vertically to save space and create a more efficient layout. Use ladders or hatches for easy access between levels.
  3. Power Supply:

    • Solar Panels: Start with solar panels for power during the day. Consider building them on the surface or on top of your base.
    • Bioreactors and Nuclear Reactors: As you progress, add bioreactors (using organic materials) or nuclear reactors for a more stable power source.
  4. Storage and Organization:

    • Storage Lockers: Create multiple storage lockers to organize resources. Label them if possible for easy access.
    • Fabricators and Upgrades: Include a fabricator, modification station, and other essential tools for crafting and upgrades.
  5. Safety and Defense:

    • Reinforcement: Use Reinforcement to strengthen your base against pressure and potential attacks from hostile creatures.
    • Escape Routes: Plan for escape routes in case of emergencies, such as a nearby Seamoth or Prawn Suit docking station.

Recommendation: Start simple with a small base and expand as you gather more resources and technology. Focus on creating a comfortable living space with essential tools and storage before adding advanced features. This will help you adapt to the game’s challenges and explore deeper areas safely.
