TL;DR
Early Game Recommendations
For sorcery builds starting out in Elden Ring, the Meteorite Staff and Rock Sling spell are highly recommended. These can be acquired early by heading to Caelid [1:4]
[1:7]. The Meteorite Staff is particularly effective for gravity magic, which can be a powerful tool in your arsenal during the early stages of the game.
Mid to Late Game Options
As you progress through the game, transitioning to more powerful weapons like the Carian Regal Scepter will enhance your sorcery build significantly [1:4]. The Moonveil katana is another popular choice due to its strong INT scaling and unique weapon art that complements sorcery builds well
[3]. If you're looking for alternatives to katanas or greatswords, the Wing of Astel offers native INT scaling and is favored for its versatility
[4:2].
Alternative Weapon Choices
For players who prefer faster weapons over katanas or greatswords, daggers and rapiers with high crit ratings can be effective. The Glintstone Kris, for example, has a special version of Glintstone Pebble that provides an impressive follow-up lunge [2:5]. Additionally, weapons like Bastard’s Stars and Family Heads flails also offer native INT scaling
[4:2].
Playstyle Considerations
The choice between dexterity and intelligence scaling can affect casting speed and melee damage. A spell sword type build might benefit from increased DEX to improve both melee and spell DPS [1:3]. For pure sorcerers, focusing on INT and using spells like Carian Slicer for close combat can be advantageous
[2:2]. Ultimately, your weapon choice should complement your preferred playstyle and the role you envision for your character.
Try sword of St. Trina. A lot of early game enemies are vulnerable to sleep status effects and it helps keep them open to subsequent attacks. You also don’t need to kill any bosses to get it, just need to run by some tough birds.
Remember when you’re choosing weapons that dex effects cast speed, so it helps to go dex and int if you’re new to sorceries.
Any weapon or affinity for a weapon that scales with INT. DEX is also a good choice as it improves casting times. Depends really how you want to play. Spell sword type could go with a little more Dex and it would help with melee DPS as well as spell DPS. Caster wouldn't use DEX for melee dmg and only cast time, I like to have some. This also depends a little on if you're going for pvp build, that would change the DEX for my caster type significantly.
I rush to Caelid for Meteor staff & Rock sling spell. Then Liurnia for Carian Knight sword.
End game I would use Carian Regal Scepter
Meteor staff is good for early game and gravity magic in general
Thank you, are there any weapons I should try and get later in the game? I know a lot of weapons are good through the whole game but I’ve heard different opinions on what weapons are good and bad for sorcery builds
I think thats down to preferance of playstyle really.
It seems like the developers themselves envisioned a battle mage as someone with a rapier in main hand (like Rogier).
But weapon is your preferance and then slap a good ash of war with magic damage on it.
Early game. Meteor Staff (and rock sling spell.clpse by). Just a Caelid ride and grab in the lake.
Find Sellen in Limgrave, in some Ruins and kick off her quest line.
Use Carian Slicer as your weapon when they get close.
When you have levelled up a bit go find Moonveil in a Caelid cave.
For my first real Elden Ring playthrough (I've had a lot of false starts, ha!), I wanted to try my hand at a sorcery build. My goal is to transition into more of a pure sorcerer once the character is more set up, but for now, she's rocking a staff in her off-hand and a thrusting sword/whip in her main hand.
My only issue is . . . thrusting swords are everywhere. I know a sorcerer isn't unique or anything, but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for weapons that a sorcerer (especially one that I'm roleplaying as a cheerful, bubbly, bookish sort of character who's dedicated to protecting their host, as I often send out my summon sign to help others through areas) might use. Maybe a dagger? Or something else?
I'm really liking the whip, even though its damage is abysmal right now, and it sort of doesn't fit the roleplay, I don't think? But anyway, I guess I'm more interested in ideas of how to make her more unique among the slew of sorcerers with thrusting weapons (or well, even thrusting weapons in general) already in the game (not that there's anything wrong with thrusting weapons, mind).
Thoughts and suggestions welcome :)
You can just use carian slicer, instead of some kind of actual weapon. It consumes extremely low fp and deal most dps among other sorceries and can be purchased in the begining of the game. Grab carian regal scepter in one hand and azur or carian glintstone staff in other. Depend on your play style. Among daggers misericorde and glintstone kris are the best for mage build. But in comparison with slicer, in terms range and damage - they're outclassed. Can also recommend noble slender sword because of it low requirements, which perfectly match astrologer class. And moonveil is obvious choice.
Magic Misericorde+25 with Carian Grandeur AoW can put quite a punch :)
Bastard’s stars or wing of astel come to mind
Glintstone Kris has a special version of Glintstone Pebble, with an insane follow-up lunge
Im a full sorc main. I only use the jellyfish shield and Lusats staff. I can share my build (: once I get home lol
share it
Tried one a while ago and couldn’t really figure out how to balance my damage, am wanting to build around eventually using the Moonlight Greatsword. Any advice about spells to get, useful talismans, weapons and scaling, etc. is appreciated.
Have you checked what is here already?
The game was been out for a long time, and several people have authored good Sorcerer guide.
If it was me, I'd enter in the search bar: "sorcery guide"
You will get at least six different documents which are worthwhile reads.
HTH
You know what, that’s a damn good point.
Every sorcery build I’ve seen uses these two for melee weapons but I really don’t like katanas and I’d rather have a faster weapon over a great-sword. I know these two are easily the best but I’d prefer something else. Do you guys have any recommendations?
As people have pointed out, you can use different ashes of war to give any weapon Int scaling, besides that
Wing of Astel is a curved sword with native Int scaling
All the crystal weapons have native int scaling (crystal spear, crystal sword)
The bastard's Stars and Family Heads are flails with native Int scaling, just to name a few, hope you have fun!
Just stumbled upon this thread and wanted to comment for my vote since I'm in the same boat as you.

I have been using Wings of Astel (+9) while my moonveil is still at +5.

Now, to be fair, I only use melee if I'm dungeon crawling and trying to save FP for harder mobs, if I'm out of mana and in trouble fast, or if I am unable to hit a mob/boss with my spells due to it dodging fast or having a shield. Otherwise, magic is my main offense and much, much stronger.
However, I am really liking Wings of Astel so far. It is extremely fast. The right trigger heavy attack is cool. It imbues your sword with this blue magic during each swing making your sword AND the magic ranged attack (short range, but still) both hit for damage that stacks. And it cost zero FP. You just get an awesome, magic animation and attack for free.
Now the main reason Astel is useful to me at least, is for FAST mobs that you cant cast against or the shielded ones. This is where Astel's Weapon Art shines. You can easily cast it, and even a shielded enemy WILL get obliterated because it is a frontal... area of effect attack that goes off multiple times. (It's a fucking galaxy exploding so it's pretty sick). This can also hit bosses really hard and multiple times since they are generally large creatures and will easily get hit by the multiple hits of the skill. This skill has honestly been the sole reason I've been able to kill certain random, but godly fast enemies in the Gaol telporter things for example. 100%

Now again, aside from those very specific instances, I don't use melee. Magic is vastly stronger than just doing normal melee swings. But for those instances listed above, I truly do love this weapon and think it is incredible. Bonus being that it scales with Int and Dex, so you can at least get a little bit faster cast times by putting points into Dex, whereas you get no real benefit of Strength stats on a mage as far as I know.

It's a pain in the ass to get access to this weapon, but definitely worth it. At the very least, get it and test it out. It's fun. It does NOT do well with staggering enemies though. Any and every mob will keep charging at you even if you're wailing into them with the magic heavy attacks.
any normal weapon with magic scale will do
Preferably mace to hit miners
Meteorite ore Blade is cool
There's no denying that katanas are strong weapons--even non-moonveil katanas. Magic infused, or keen infused and then buffed with Scholar's Armaments/Frozen weapon.
But you can also do great with a rapier or dagger with a high crit rating, I used one as a mage for a long time. Glintblade phalanx as the ash of war, which will stun enemies in one or two rounds, allowing you to finish them in one stab with your buffed dagger/rapier.
Other than that...there are a bunch of magic STR/quality weapons that I haven't touched at all yet, because I haven't made a STR/INT build
[deleted]
Ordovis Greatsword has good Str and a bit of faith scaling. Blasphemous Blade would be an option too. Get that Str to at least 60 if you two hand it
With those stats you’ll do very mediocre damage with everything. I’d respec and pump at least one damage stat to 80 and dump stats that you aren’t using like intelligence. 50 strength does put you at a decent amount if you’re two handing a weapon, but that limits you to pure strength weapons for your best damage.
Incantations scale purely off of faith (mostly), so I’d consider maybe dumping all your dexterity down to 18 or so and putting those points into faith.
Claymore. You gravitate towards a quality build so this would be the obvious choice. Excellent moveset and good poise damage. Scales good with quality and is flexible as hell. Put as much points in faith as you need for your favorite incantations. I would say 25 is enough so can use golden vow and some weapon buffs. The rest you can dump in strength and dex... Just my humble opinion.

Have a lot of time in the game with many playthroughs and all different kinds of builds. One thing I haven't really tried is sorcery. Not sure why but just never loved it. Love using incants but could never really get into sorcery. I respeced once and tried it but it was +7 in the DLC and just wasn't feeling it. Looking back probably wasn't the best time to try it for the first time. So im going to start from scratch and give it a try. Any tips about weapons, spells, and how to maximize damage would be greatly appreciated.
For early game get the
Equipment: Meteorite staff
Spells to get: Rocksling
Spells: Rocksling, pebble, and carian slicer.
For mid game (after 45 - 55 int) (have around 20 mind and by endgame get 25 to 30 but around 25 minimum)
Equipment to get: Staff of loss for night sorceries, get lusat or azur’s staff as your main staff, moonveil, wing of astel, or darkmoon greatsword (I like to keep moonveil and dmgs but mainly use dogs, moonveil is useful for fast enemies tho, this eliminates need for carian slicer.
Spells to get: Adula’s moon blade, Shard Spiral, Cometshard/Comet/(Whatever Glintstone pebble variation you need, and a phalanx spell for close range, and magic glintblade
Spells: Rocksling, Shard Spiral, Pebble variation, Moonblade, Phalanx spell, and Magic glintblade (personally never used the last 2 so 8 memory slots was all I needed before going int/fai in Ng+)
For end game (About 60 to 70 int)
Equipment: Switch to carian regal sceptre or if you were stupidly like me and sold rennala’s remembrance azur’s works fine (especially if your doing no summons)
Spells to get: Comet Azur (to cheese annoying bosses like the tree sentinel in front of maliketh) Ranni’s dark moon, meteorite of astel (again for cheese)
Spells: Rocksling, shardspiral , pebble variation, moonblade, phalanx spell of your choice, magic glintblade, and Ranni‘s darkmoon, now comet azur and meteorite of astel should not be on your memory slots unless you absolutely need them or else you will get tempted.
Talismans: Doesn’t really matter just get the one that replenishes cerulean flask charges , green turtle talisman is very important, stargazers heirloom is good mid game (+5 int) and the rest is up to you.
Extra tips: Use dmgs aow as an extra spell very helpful, shard spiral is very good against fire giant, dragon bosses and Elden beast, just big boys in general and thats about all have fun!
Tha ka for the info bro I'll keep all this in mind.
Keep in mind that all of your early game spells are also good candidates for late game spells. You NEVER run out of good places to use rock sling. Arrows reach talisman + rock sling = staggered dragon, constantly. Carian slicer is really good as well. If you can space well against a boss, setting terra magica and dodging around them with slicer is absurd
Also, enemies don't always aggro when you set glintblades, so that spell that prisoner starts with can be used 3 or 4 times before a fight starts. Against the misbegotten in morne, you can test this out. Run to the edge of your range, cast twice, kill the furthest one. Do it again, do it again, do it again. It's a very skyrim playstyle that I try not to use too often but it's really funny sometimes
I always enjoyed melee/spell builds so I don't want to be a pure caster. I want to mess around with the dragon incantations but with my stats spread between arcane and faith and there being no weapons that scale with both, I am a bit lost.
Do I just go for weapons with low dex/str requirements and slap occult or blood on it? Or there are any weapons that were designed with arcane/faith that I'm just overlooking?
Depends on the stat spread you go with for your Dragon Communion Seal. A FAI 43/ARC 43 split would give you 339 incant scaling. However, a FAI 28/ARC 70 split would give you about the same.
I’m assuming the difficulty in choice of weapon is due to you going with the former stat spread? With the latter stat spread, you could easily pick any weapon and just use Occult.
For example, an RL150 Prophet can have VIG 50 MIND 22-25 END 22-19 STR 14 DEX 16 INT 7 FAI 28 ARC 70.
You can use all Dragon Communion incantations with this build. You also have access to the following good weapons: Star Fists, Vulgar Militia Shotel, Banished Knight’s Halberd, almost every hammer including Spiked Club, Morning Star, Hammer, etc. And then, Uchigatana, Scythe, Spiked Spear, and basically every standard straight sword. Use Occult affinity on them. Bonus points for the ones that have native bleed. Having 70 ARC would scale both the physical damage and bleed buildup with your stat.
If you found an extra 1 point from another stat, you could have 15 STR, enough to two-hand an Occult Great Stars.
And even at 28 FAI, Flame-Art affinity does good work on all these weapons too. Plus you can easily buff your overall damage with spells like Golden Vow (aura buff), Howl of Shabriri/Flame Grant Me Strength (either or, not both body buffs).
What do you think?
This sounds much better than what I had intended. I misunderstood the way the scaling worked with the Dragon Communion Seal. Your spread is much better with staying at the lowest faith requirement for the Dragon incantations and like you said, gives me access to a ton of great weapons.
Thanks for the help, it would have been a slog if I had tried it my way originally.
Yeah, it’s what makes that seal truly goated. It has ‘B’ in Faith and ‘S’ in Arcane at +10, so as a hybrid catalyst, it follows the typical rule of 43/43 or 45/45. But because of how much more ARC-scaling it is, if you keep pumping ARC, it still goes up.
As a pure caster, the 43/43 split would let you have way more stats to play with, for Mind, Endurance and/or Vigor. But the 28/70 split is better for a melee/caster mix.
My favorite build is a dragon communion build. I get faith the minimum I need for those spells and the rest goes to arcane. Those spells actually scale with arcane. Then I use a bleed weapon that also scales with arcane. Damage output from the blade and the spells is extremely high. I am in NG+4 and it never fails me.
I use a weapon that scales with dex and arcane. It keeps the load out lighter than the weapons that scale with strength for this build. You need a lot of FP for this build as the dragon communion spells use up quite a bit
Only one that comes to mind is bloodfiends fork. Use a holy or flame art infusion on it for split scaling. Other infusible weapons with either good faith or arc scaling should work. If it has faith scaling you can go bleed/occult affinity or if it has arc scaling you can go holy/flame art affinity.
Flowerstone gavel. Perfect for dragon cult incants
im trying occult flameverge with bleed build, it feels pretty good
Been playing Elden Ring since it came out, but I've never done anything with sorceries and figured I'd try it out, but idk anything about what's good and what's bad and how much I should put into each stat, etc.
Go crazy with 70 Int with the Regal Scepter(Rennala rememberance)
Ranni's Dark Moon is a must for bosses
I'd use either the Erdtree's Favor +2 for some extra stamina or the Two Headed Turtle talisman to increase stamina recovery
The new Gravitational Missile spell is incredible for free aiming at the ground with a huge get off me explosion aoe, and very FP efficient
Graven-Mass Talisman buffs sorceries by 8%
Magic Scorpion Charm Talisman buffs magic damage by 12%
Probably obvious but don't forget the Magic Tear for your Physick
I've never used it because it seems inconvenient, but Terra Magica could be good for you. It buffs any Magic by 35%
Appreciate it

Same as other builds with vigour between 40-60, and enough endurance to medium roll
For mind 38 is ideal as that’s how much one fully upgraded flask will fully recharge but you can get away with less
Int is obviously your main damage stat and getting it to 80 is ideal, if you’re using weapons and doing a spell sword build then usually just go minimums in dex and strength and pump Int
For staffs you’re best bet is
40 int and below meteorite staff
41 - 68 int academy glintstone
68 int and above carian regal sceptre
The Lusat staff has higher scaling, but personally I don’t like the higher fp consumption but it def can maximize damage
If exclusively using night sorceries staff of loss is best bet
The other staffs can have good bonuses to certain schools of magic that can be worth off handing when using those spells
You can go spellsword with a weapon and there’s lots of good options or you can go straight sorceries as there are some great melee options like carian slicer, adulas moonblade, carian piercer, gavel of haima
Some S-tier sorceries imo are:
Impenetrable thorns, night shard, ice crag, carian slicer, adulas moonblade, rannis dark moon, rock sling, magma shot, magic glintblade, Tera magica, comet azur, carian piercer, fleeting microcosm
Lots of other options to try and see tho, a lot of it is personal preference
Thanks!
Hey everyone first time player here, I’m wanting to use the great sword of judgement. Right now my stats are all over the place and I’m just using random rings I’ve picked up throughout playing. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could respec my stats or change my rings to make it better for the great sword of judgement? Any help is appreciated!
DISCLAIMER: the greatsword of judgement is not that good of a weapon, but if you wanna have fun (or cosplay as Sulyvhan)... who am I to stop you from using it.
The Greatsword of judgement requires 17 STR, 15 DEX and 12 INT, but scales mostly with INT. I would reccomend going with 17 STR, 15 DEX and 40 to 60 INT.
As for the other stats, aim for: at least 30 vigor (even 40 if you're planning to go in NG+ and further) and 30 endurance. Attunement... isn't really necessary in my opinion. Vitality... depends on what armor you're going to wear, but I wouldn't go higher than 15 as Havel's ring is a thing.
Rings: definitely cloranthy ring for stamina regen, FAP ring for some extra stats, magic clutch ring (boost magic damage but reduces your own defenses, so, if you feel unsure about it, you can either use Lloyd's sword ring, which boosts damage by 10% when at full health, or something that boosts your defense) and probably havel's ring.
This sword is not buffable, but if you want to use sorceries hit me up and I can change something
Im aware of the moonlight sword and the greatsword of judgement, are there any others that are worth infusing with magic or just picking up and leveling to the max?
Depends how much str/dex you plan to have. And if you wanna use weapon buffs or just infuse.
Lothric knight sword and astora great sword both make excellent options for infusing. Most fast weapons are good for buffing, like sellsword twinblades.
If lower stats, estoc, broadsword, longsword, and shortsword are all solid options.
Sounds good, I was eyeballing the broadsword.
Any of those good for pvp? Mainly roll catching. Or is roll catching more of an acquired skill.
Theres the Heysel Pick too (weapon catalyst hybrid with certain combos).
Roll catching is a learned skill, but straight swords are just good in general. Lothric knight sword is generally amazing on any build.
Aqua marine dagger is great on dex/int builds.
only valid choice for pvp from infusable straight swords is gotthards
if you want to rollcatch tho, straight swords cant do it on reaction - means your opponent has to panicroll.
take a closer look upon rapiers (estoc) and fast curved swords (scimi) because they can rollcatch on reaction if you want to do that
i liked executioners greatsword can’t infuse it tho and doesn’t scale off int at all, but killing enemies can restore fp and if u spamming spook/hidden body running around back stabbing everything it’s great.
One handed weapon with crystal infusion.
Aquamarine dagger. It’s a lightsaber!! Ringed City dlc though.
reminds me of carian slicer. solid choice for a wizard.
Heysel pick is the default meta option for PVP sorc
Best weapons for sorcery builds in Elden Ring
Key Considerations for Sorcery Builds in Elden Ring:
Staff Selection: Choose a staff that enhances your sorcery damage. The Carian Regal Scepter is a top-tier choice due to its high scaling with Intelligence and ability to cast powerful spells.
Spell Variety: Incorporate a mix of offensive and utility spells. Key spells include:
Talismans: Equip talismans that boost sorcery damage or enhance your spellcasting capabilities. Consider:
Armor Choice: While you may prioritize Intelligence, wearing light armor can help maintain mobility. Look for sets that provide good resistance while keeping your weight low.
Stat Allocation: Focus on leveling up Intelligence for spell damage and Mind for increased FP (Focus Points) to cast more spells.
Recommendation: For a powerful sorcery build, pair the Carian Regal Scepter with Comet Azur and equip the Magic Scorpion Charm. This combination allows for high burst damage while maintaining versatility in combat. Always keep an eye on your FP management to ensure you can cast spells effectively during encounters.
