What Redditors are Saying

Best Zoner in Street Fighter 6

TL;DR The top zoners in Street Fighter 6 are Guile, Dhalsim, and JP. Each has unique tools that make them effective at controlling space and applying pressure from a distance.

Guile

Guile is often considered one of the best zoners due to his iconic Sonic Boom loops, which require high execution and vary depending on the opponent's character size and stance [1]. His zoning capabilities are complemented by solid defensive options, making him a staple choice for players who prefer a projectile-heavy playstyle. Despite being labeled as a zoner, Guile can also apply pressure effectively when needed [5:2].

Dhalsim

Dhalsim stands out with his long-range attacks and teleportation abilities, allowing him to maintain distance while still applying pressure. His ability to mix zoning with rushdown tactics makes him versatile. Dhalsim's toolkit includes strong stun combos and creative offensive options like teleports and bouncing fireballs [1]. This flexibility allows him to adapt to various matchups and keep opponents guessing [4:2].

JP

JP is a unique character in SF6, offering a blend of zoning and mix-up potential. His arsenal includes portals, a unique reversal, and cancellable moves that keep his zoning unpredictable [1]. While some players view JP as more of a mix-up character, his zoning capabilities cannot be overlooked, especially in controlling the pace of a match [1:11].

Zoning Strategy and Game Mechanics

Street Fighter 6's core mechanics tend to favor rushdown characters, which means that zoners must be played with precision and careful planning. Mistakes can be costly, so players who choose zoners need to be strategic about when to apply pressure and when to maintain distance [1:8]. The game rewards creativity and adaptability, making characters like Dhalsim and JP particularly fascinating for players who enjoy a tactical approach to zoning.

In conclusion, while Guile, Dhalsim, and JP each bring their own strengths to the table, the best zoner for you will depend on your personal playstyle and how you leverage their unique tools to control the battlefield.

ORIGINAL POST

Sf6 has 3 "true" zoners. Guile, Dhalsim, and JP.

When looking at all of their converstions and tools, they honestly all seem like some of the suaciest characters in the game!

Guile has high execution Sonic Boom loops that also change depending on character size and if they're crouching or standing

Dhalsim has ridiculous stun combos with SA2, and a shit ton of creative offense with his teleports, floats, and bouncing fireballs

JP has make-a-wish combo flexibility, a very unique reversal, portals that keep his zoning unpredicable, and a 2HP cancellable when anti-airing which can set up crazy oki if a portal is already down

They're definetly not the only saucy characters, but I feel like they are the only archetype Capcom has universally handelled well this game (unless you count Sagat as a zoner but it seems like he was never intended to be in this game)

I haven't seen enough guile to appreciate him but I think jp and sim are some of the cooler characters in the game because they have so many options and routes that require creativity.

Also this game favors rushdown characters a lot more just by its core mechanics so its cool to me to see how careful sim/jp players have to be because a mistake is so costly

dhalsim has really strong rushdown though

10 upvotes on reddit
ughwhatisthisshit · 1 month ago

He has prolly the overall weakest rush down in the game in terms of damage off openings and risk reward on going in.

I think ideally you play him as a hybrid like torimeshi does but even torimeshi will zone when he can. If you've seen mochi play hes a lot more of a zoner.

You kinda have to go in occasionally as him if you want to do any real amount of damage, but thats why I find him fascinating because you have to pick your spots extremely carefully because he has the worst defense in the game and if u miss space a drill or slide u get fucked

Rush down seems like the optimal way to play him. High pressure with high APM.

He’s also one of the hardest characters to be good at rush down with. His defensive tools are so limited that if your pressure isn’t on point you’re gonna hang yourself out to dry.

At least that’s how it seems as a Sim dabbler.

The best? Guile, Poison, and Dhalsim, in no particular order. They can all also rushdown though. If you want zoning only, then you'll have to go with Sagat. Menat is a bit weird, but I guess that you could also call her a "pure" zoner.

Guile, Poison, Dhalsim, Menat and Sagat are the best zoners in the game. Then there are those who can zone just fine if you want to but they are not to be doing it all the time. Nash, Gill and Urien with VS2 are examples of such characters.

Luke is the best character in the game but Dhalsim is the best zoner simply because his toolkit invalidates all other zoning toolkits and makes a lot of other anti-zoning tools more difficult to use in the same way Poison, Menat, and Abigail do; long range strikes. Who the best zoner is will depend entirely on how you want to judge zoning strength because Luke, Dhalsim, Poison, and Menat all have different enough strengths that can be valued over the others.

The top tier choices are definitely Poison, Dhalsim (you can be both zoner and rush down all at once), and Guile. Then maybe Rose. Otherwise obvious choice of Sagat but he has a lot of crappy drawbacks. Technically you could consider Ryu a zoner but it's arguable Lukes fireball is better so you might as well just play Luke in that case. You could also play Menat for something a little different since it's kinda like a cross between Poison & fireball chars.

Menat is not even in the running for best zoner in the game. As a Menat and Rose player, Rose is strictly better at zoning than Menat. Poison and Sim are also better and have the added benefit of being able to rushdown as well.

Best defensive characters that aren't zoners?

Posted by aladdin142 · in r/StreetFighter · 2 years ago

So I come from a Tekken background which (kinda) has no projectiles. But in those games I always preferred the defensive/ whiff punish characters.

Does SF6 have defensive characters that aren't focused on sitting back and firing projectiles (zoners) and instead use keep out moves and strong punishes to play defensive?

If so, who?

She has a projectile, but it's not really the core of her gameplan so much as a single useful tool. Her main attributes are having really good buttons, and having a really fast normal walk speed (especially her backwalk speed).

Ferry and Metera are currently the undisputed best traditional zoners in this patch, with Versusia being the best unorthodox zoner.

That said, most of the zoners this patch are really sick. All three of those characters are considered top characters. I think Eustace is also getting more representation at high level.

10 upvotes on reddit

JTR_35 · 3 months ago

Probably Metera.

Other zoners can't beat her from full screen. Ultimate arrow beats every other projectile I've tried. Ultimate butterfly also so strong everyone has to respect it or risk eating big damage.

Above average mobility with short hop and double jump. 5L is very good for being fast, low, disjointed hitbox.

Most of the zoners are pretty good now, its only really Vikala who still sucks. Metera and Ferry are the most 'pure zoner' types in the game and they're both very strong, though I'd also bring up Lowain as a more unconventional zoner who is pretty good at the moment and has some real bullshit (bonewheel is one of the best ult skills in the game) as well as the ability to gimmick people to death.

Who’s the best anti-zoner secondary?

Posted by ScrubFighter6 · in r/StreetFighter · 2 years ago

I main Marisa and find her most difficult matches are against zoning-heavy matchups like JP and Dhalsim. If I pick up a secondary, I’d like it to be a character who excels against zoner matchups. I play modern controls so please keep in mind that limits some options. Which character would you recommend? I’m tempted to become what I fear most and learn JP…

Dhalsim is and always was THE anti zoner character, his whole kit is designed around being the only one allowed to zone and anyone else that tried will get their shit pushed in, even since ST dhalsim will lose a traditional fireball war with most of the cast and struggles too keep some characters out that other zoners can keep out for free , what makes dhalsim so strong in nearly every game is that he gets to nullify every other zoner from doing what they do when you pick him

3 upvotes on reddit

Kangarou · 2 years ago

JP is ironically the best anti-zoner. Triglav's existence wards zoners off from throwing excessive projectiles.

But if you want an anti-zoner who is not themselves a zoner, Cammy and Kim like the others have said.

JP is best vs Guile specifically, vs JP you'd be playing the mirror and he doesn't do well into Dhalsim

Cammy on the other hand, beats all 3 of them except maybe Guile, who would be even at worst.

Cammy / Kimberly are the best anti-zoners atm.

Alternatively you could also pick Dhalsim, he does insanely well into JP and vs other Dhalsim, well it would be a mirror match.

Just know that picking those characters wont make you automatically win vs zoners, you will still have to put in the work.

Kimberly is better at mixing people up and making them guess 24/7 once you're in

Cammy has great buttons to play from neutral but isn't as snowball as Kimberly.

If you play Kimberly you will have to spend a lot of time to learn all her good setups and how to use them to open people up.

And for Cammy, she is a character that really scales off of the players skill level, yes she can be unga bunga as well, but you will find that what she really excels at is having amazing neutral game tools and great Followup after combos.

Broly from DBFZ is somehow the best grappler and the best zoner at the same time. His Ki-Blasts are very fast, they come out at great angles both on the ground and in the air. Additionally, his normals are huge, his medium, heavy attacks and special attacks are armored and he spits damage like crazy.

In my time playing hftf i've never heard someone call petshop a zoner, I can kinda see it, but what he does with icicle break, which of course can deny a third of the screen, works much better if he uses it offensively.

He could zone you with icicle break and his other specials, but he lacks chip on most of his moves and they don't cover a lot of options.

He unlocks his full potential when randomly dashes (he has an 8-way dash) and does 2a along with icicle break, it's the thing he's famous for. He also has more complex mixups with it, so calling him a zoner feels wrong to me.

That depends on what you think makes them the "best". Do you mean who excels purely at zoning, or do you mean which character who can be played as a zoner is considered the best (as in highest tier)?

Megaman's varied projectiles make his zoning very strong, but he can suffer close up.

Snake's grenade game, ledge trapping, and easy kill confirm definitely make him very strong, though a large part of his play is blowing himself up with his opponent rather than strictly walling them out.

Young link has great projectiles, and a very solid combo game.

For an atypical pick, Duck Hunt duo's projectiles have crazy potential.

Of these characters, snake is generally considered the highest tier, but is probably the worst of them at purely zoning. Granted he can still do it well, it's just that the others can arguably zone better.

Key Considerations for Best Zoners in Street Fighter 6

  1. Character Range: Zoners typically excel at controlling space with long-range attacks. Look for characters with strong projectiles or normals that can keep opponents at bay.

  2. Projectile Options: Effective zoning characters often have versatile projectiles that can be used to control the pace of the match. Consider how fast and safe these projectiles are.

  3. Mobility: Good zoning requires the ability to reposition effectively. Characters with good movement options can maintain distance while avoiding pressure.

  4. Punishment Potential: Zoners should have tools to punish opponents who try to close the gap, whether through counter-attacks or special moves.

  5. Matchup Knowledge: Understanding how your zoning character performs against different opponents is crucial. Some characters may struggle against rushdown or grappler types.

Recommendations:

  • Guile: Known for his strong zoning capabilities with Sonic Boom and Flash Kick, Guile can control space effectively and punish opponents trying to approach.

  • Dhalsim: With his long limbs and teleportation, Dhalsim excels at keeping opponents at a distance while dealing damage from afar.

  • Chun-Li: While not a traditional zoner, her long-range normals and effective fireball game allow her to control space and punish opponents effectively.

  • Ryu: With a balanced toolkit, Ryu can zone effectively with Hadouken and has solid normals to keep opponents at bay.

Each of these characters has unique strengths that make them effective zoners, so consider your playstyle and preferences when choosing one!
